12 Foods that make you smarter
So excited that the best health website medhelp has published my article "12 foods that make you smarter". This article is based on the Chapter 3 of my book called Super Body, Super Brain.
from medhelp.org Slide 2: Eat to Be Like Einstein
According to Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, PhD, a neurobiologist at UCLA who studies the impact of certain foods on the brain, the key is to avoid fried foods and add more omega 3 fatty acids to your diet. Omega 3s are essential for normal brain functioning because they are our primary source of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), the most abundant omega 3 fatty acid found in the cell membranes of brain cells. Scientists believe that DHA protects against "normal wear and tear" on the brain, helps promote brain growth, enhances learning and memory and improves communication between synapses. click here to see my article

Smoking destroys internal organs, brain-muscle function and kills you in silence

SMOKING AND THE HUMAN BODY
-Effects Of Nicotine:
Nicotine is a drug. People don't realize how devastating is and the "silent" effect of nicotine. It is addictive like many drugs and gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Six to seven seconds later the brain can feel the reaction.
Consequences are: Alterations in metabolism, behavior, heart rate, blood pressure. If you keep smoking through the years pockets of nicotine are deposited increasing your risks for cancer and disease at the same time the human body fights its natural degenerative decline.
SMOKING AND THE BRAIN
-Smoking kills brain cells no matter at what age. These cells affect cognitive abilities such as attention, memory, auditory processes, motor coordination or executive functions like planning or multitasking .
-Smoking kills new grown cells and affects short term memory, concentration
-Smoking increases anxiety, stress and produces erratic behaviors.
-Like any other drug it affects you emotionally, people's personality, behavior or reactions are different if they had been smoking.
SMOKING DESTROYS ORGANS
It destroys your organs internally, especially lungs, liver, kidneys
SMOKING SPEEDS UP YOUR HEARTBEAT
Smoking as any drug, speeds up your heartbeat, your blood pressure increasing your risks exponentially to a heart attack
SMOKING DESTROYS YOUR VOICE
Smoking affects your throat, larynx and mouth.
SMOKING DESTROYS YOUR MUSCLES SILENTLY AND DELAYS MUSCLE RESPONSE
Smoking slows down your muscle response making you "AGE" quickly. After smoking if you try any challenging exercise you will see how you move MUCH SLOWER. This is the process of killing "Motor neurons", those neurons that carry information to your muscle to make them move faster.
WOMEN FERTILITY
Does Smoking Affect Conception?
Smoking is known to cause problems with fertility. Infertility rates are higher among smokers than nonsmokers and it may take longer for smokers to become pregnant. The connection between cigarettes and infertility is compelling.
While cigarettes do not necessarily cause infertility, they can have an adverse effect on the couple's ability to conceive. Some may be surprised that the problem exists in men as much as in females. Source:http://pregnancy.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Does_Smoking_Affect_Conception
SMOKING AFFECTS SPERM QUALITY IN MEN
Smoking impairs sperm count, reduces sperm lifespan, and may cause genetic changes. Additionally, a 1999 study found that men who smoke have lower sex drives and less frequent sex. (http://www.babyhopes.com)

Alzheimer, genetics and exercise: 5 tips to prevent Alzheimer disease
Alzheimer disease-tips to prevent cognitive decline
Alzheimer, genetics and exercise: 5 tips to prevent Alzheimer disease
Genetics and fate? How much genetics play in our future health? Can we escape from our genes? There is no question that lifestyle choices make a huge impact, more than we think. What is Alzheimer disease? Alzheimer it is by far the most devastating disease affecting our seniors and there are enormous implications for our families, our governments and our health practitioners. Why is Alzheimer disease so devastating? Because affects a really important structure of the brain, the hippocampus an area responsible for short term meory and learning. Think about this: If we can't learn or memorize who are we? That is why we need to put all of our efforts and preventing and taking great care about our seniors suffering this disease.
Alzheimer's disease is A progressive neurologic disease of the brain that leads to the irreversible loss of neurons and dementia. The clinical consequences of Alzheimer's disease are progressive impairment in speech, memory, executive decisions, judgment, decision making, spatial perception, and language.

Regarding the importance of genetics in the development of Alzheimer disease ow there is not a clear conclusion on how Alzheimer's develops genetically but the more we know about this devastating disease the more genetics play an important part. I am directing you to what the National Institute of Health is suggesting regarding genetics: http://www.nia.nih.gov/Alzheimers/Publications/geneticsfs.htm
NEUROGENESIS AND THE BRAIN
On a side note I want to share a different approach with you. I have been researching and collaborating with different scientists, experts in the disease and my program just got awarded a grant for Parkinson disease. Alzheimer's affects a really important structure of the brain called the hippocampus, area responsible for short term memory. The latest studies are showing the aerobic activity can enhance and create new neurons in this specific section of the brain in a process called neurogenesis. You should check this great study:
CARDIOVASCULAR ACTIVITY CREATES NEW NEURONS IN THE HIPPOCAMPUS, ARE FOR LEARNING AND MEMORY
In other words in the case you are predisposed genetically your lifestyle clearly makes a huge impact in the delay for the disease. In addition cardiovascular activity should be in the top of your list and add some motor learning (complex movements) when you move meaning. In other words the same way we can learn mentally you should activate and engage as many areas of the brain in a process called neuroplasticity like multitasking different body movements.
If you take care of your heart you will be reducing your risk for Alzheimer. So take care of your heart for a better chances of a great tomorrow!
On a last note don't forget the impact of a healthy nutrition on your brain since more cases are reported showing a high correlation between cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's.
Lets get a plan for you to prevent Alzheimer disease. Get a piece of paper and a pencil:
5 Essential Tips to Prevent Alzheimer disease:
1.- Keep your Mind motivated and your brain active in any field that makes you constantly learn: reading, problem solving, brain fitness exercises, learning a language, playing an instrument or a memory game.
2.- Work your brain with movement. You can train your brain with movement in several ways:
a.- From left to right
b.- From Front to back
c.- From your sixth sense (proprioception)
