What you probably don’t know about me is that I was involved in a Movie and i went to the fascinating city of Cannes, France, one of the best European Film Festival to not say the best one!

I still have phenomenal memories from  Cannes Film Festival.  Can you believe that 3 years ago I was there at the red carpet?  I was there back in 2009 premiering a movie a co produced and acted, “The Crimson Mask” by Elias Plagianos. The movie took us 6 years long to produce and we won 35 Film Festival Awards and we got invited to the Cannes Film Festival . The director Elias Plagianos did such a phenomenal and incredible job directing, producing and writing such a masterpiece!

Even though your brain is not a muscle, you can use your muscles to boost your brainpower. Each SUPER BODY, SUPER BRAIN exercise may seem easy to perform, but the crucial element is that your brain perceives the exercises as challenging,” explains Michael Gonzalez-Wallace, a performance trainer and athlete. While traditional repetitive exercises—such as the classic bicep curl—use only limited brain power, these exercises actively engage several areas in the brain including, the cerebellum (responsible for balance, coordination, muscle timing, and speech); the basal ganglia (motor-coordinated movements); the hippocampus (learning new movements); and the frontal lobes (higher thinking and decision making). Gonzalez-Wallace developed his program over a period of years, drawing on the work and input of dozens of neuroscientists, neurokinesiologists, physicians, psychiatrists, and brain researchers from all over the world, who all support the notion that the right kind of exercise can indeed improve brainpower. Michael Gonzalez-Wallace has been involved with athletic sports for over 20 years. In 2002 he become a personal trainer for New York Sports Club and received a certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He’s been featured in Redbook, Prevention, O and Fitness magazines, and on msnbc.com and CNN. He lives in New York City.”

Today is my tenth year Anniversary since arriving to USA. Thanks for your support!

BRAIN FITNESS BY MICHAEL GONZALEZ-WALLACE

BRAIN FITNESS BY MICHAEL GONZALEZ-WALLACE

Today is my tenth year Anniversary since I arrived to United States. I still remember when I was a toddler and my mom would bring me to spend long summers in the Midwest: Stillwater, Minnesota, Pekin, Illinois, and Cape Coral, Florida.

Since I was a little kid United States played such an important part in my upbringing: What I remember it was the warmth of my american family, the freedom of opportunities and such a beautiful country full of wonderful people.

Then I stayed in Spain for 27 years, went to college, graduated from Economics, played semi professional basketball in Estudiantes and worked as an Investment banker for Santander Central Hispano Bank but I was still missing something, I was missing United States.

I still remember like yesterday when i said to my parents, friends and family “I am moving to New York” and my friends at that time asked me to do what? Did you get a job? I said No. I have nothing in new York, no family, no connections but I feel that I need to move there. At that time I thought I would end up working in Banking.

I still remember the first time I landed: It was 18th of May 2002, I was wearing my spanish banking suit, with my initials on my shirt and an episode happened at the plane that looked to indicate on the really difficult times ahead. My suitcase got stuck in the luggage compartment of Iberia flight 6251 from Madrid. I delayed the whole plane and specialists in stuck luggages came to my rescue and asked me: What did you pack here? a dead body? I was sweating and laughing at the same time. I packed everything I could from Spain  That episode in the plane landing on that 20th of May of 2002 only recalled few years ago it was anticipating that maybe  my New York journey just started and to sit tight cause hurdles, ups and downs were coming my way.

For the last 10 years I have been researching, developing and perfectioning a new exercise program for the brain and the body with the advice of a Neuroscientist from Columbia University, a Neurologist from NYU, Kinesiologists, Psychiatrists and thousands of training sessions. A Certified Professional Trainer from the National Academy of Sports of Medicine he recently earned the Prestigious Fitness Excellence Award by a US Governor and a City Mayor. Currently he is implementing his program nationwide from Sports medicine & Fitness Centers to Hospitals and Schools He’s been featured extensively in over 27 media outlets Media including Redbook, Fox News, Prevention, O and Fitness magazines, msnbc.com and CNN Headline news. He lives in New York City.

Super Body, Super Brain has gained so much popularity in the medical community that a Hospital in Minnesota has awarded the program with a $25,000 grant for an individualized Super Body, Super Brain program for Parkinson disease and now the program is in advanced stages to launch in a Hospital in NJ for Breast Cancer patients. The popular show “Extra” featured the program and called it a great way to “Challenge your body and your mind”.

This journey has just started and I am very thankful that you are always there supporting me. Thanks a million

This is a collection of few great times. THANKS A MILLION!

Is Your Ab Workout Hurting Your Back? Core strength exercise for a better back and a greater core

Is your ab workout hurting your back? Try this core exercise

Is your ab workout hurting your back? Try this core exercise

I was reading an article from the New York Times Is Your Ab Workout Hurting Your Back? by Gretchen Reynolds and immediately I started receiving emails from my clients asking me if crunches were safe or not.

My response to one of my clients was: “I don’t think you should worry. At the beginning of the article explains how those ones with healthy backs are able to fire a deep abdominal muscle called the transversus abdominis(like you).

The main point of the article at The new York Times is the if you are starting a physical fitness program crunches you may hurt your back and I agree since there a lot of factors to watch such hand positioning cervical alignment and muscle tension. If you are starting it is better to build a progressive core exercise program that strengthen all abdominals and lower back, part of the core (take a look at the exercise i am proposing here) .
Then the article mentions that stabilizer muscles in the abdominal region are more important than the isolated muscle in the abs. Remember that every time you are doing a movement you have prime movers antagonist and stabilizers so if you are not strong you will put pressure in the back.  In our sessions when you follow the Super Body, Super Brain program  you are looking that 80% is pure core workout and the article says how if you strengthen a muscle in the abs and not the others you may destabilize your spine and I agree. That is the reason why in our session I focus on hands positioning and  motion giving you an effective crunch and not a traditional sit up.

I disagree in the article where one of the exercises mentioned for better core is a side plank that in my opinion it should only be reserved to athletes and he is recommending it for everyone instead of traditional plank, again            Dr Stuart Mcgill is  studying spine biomechanics and most of his theory is that when you mention the word core it is not only about the abdominals but also the back and I agree completely with him.

Try this exercise to improve your core strength and physical stamina. This week 1 leg bridges plus chest press, Check this exercise for increased core power, greater upper and lower body strength, stamina, cardiovascular and focus!
Superior bridge for a tighter core and toned legs- One Leg Bridge plus Chest Press
Bridges are a phenomenal core exercise. However Lets take it up a notch. One leg bridge combined with chest press is a great exercise to build a stronger core, firmer thighs, solid buttocks and resilient hamstrings besides a strong chest

From a lying down position with one leg bent, both feet  flat on the floor, the right  leg straight up tighten your core then perform a chest press at the same time your are pushing with your left buttock and back of the thighs lifting your body off the floor keeping the right leg off and straight at all times. Do it ten times then change legs. Advanced can use 10 lbs- 5 sets and Beginners 5lbs-3 sets

Running Exercise for runners and non runners: improve your speed, balance and muscle power

Running exercise

Michael Gonzalez-Wallace shows a Running exercise: skipping-Biomechanics of running

Skipping Running is one of the best locomotion exercises for runners. Does exercise improve locomotion? Check out the latest study: Exercise increases blood flow to locomotor, vestibular, cardiorespiratory and visual regions of the brain

However the benefits if you are not a runner are phenomenal! This exercise will improve your coordination, balance, strength, muscle power and great cardiovascular activity

First before starting this exercise try this exercise slow first to get the feeling of coordination between different parts of your body then try to speed it up.

From a standing position raise simultaneously your left arm and right leg bent till is parallel to the floor raising the right heel slightly off the floor then change sides. Then try to do this movement as fast as possible without losing the coordination. This is one repetition Beginners do three times  and more advanced 5 times

Changing Brains for the Better: Article Documents Benefits of Multiple Practices, Such as Physical Exercise and Meditation

Exercise and Meditation. Changing the brains to the better: Exercise and Meditation. Michael Gonzalez-Wallace writes about the benefits of combining both

Exercise and Meditation. Changing the brains to the better. Michael Gonzalez-Wallace writes about the benefits of combining both

Great news! I was so waiting for this study to come out! We have been hearing constantly about the benefits of exercise and meditation but never together! In my book Super Body, Super Brain back in 2011 I wanted to write the first exercise book which combined physical exercise and meditation together!  That is why I invited one of the best Meditation experts, Sharon Salzberg to develop a meditation routine combined with my exercises. So lets go back to this phenomenal study coming from one of the most pioneers Universities studying brain activity function, the University of Wisconsin.

From Science Daily

ScienceDaily (Apr. 18, 2012) — Practices like physical exercise, certain forms of psychological counseling and meditation can all change brains for the better, and these changes can be measured with the tools of modern neuroscience, according to a review article now online at Nature Neuroscience  to keep reading click here

Social influences on neuroplasticity: stress and
interventions to promote well-being

Experiential factors shape the neural circuits underlying social and emotional behavior from the prenatal period to the end of life. These factors include both incidental influences, such as early adversity, and intentional influences that can be produced
