Simple thing to understand

You haven't got to understand any high standard of philosophy or jugglery of
words, this or that. Simple thing. What is simple thing? God is great,
everyone knows, and we are part and parcel of the great. So when we are
combined with the great, we are also great. Just like your body, a small
part of your body, a little finger or toe, that is also the same value of
the whole body. But as soon as that small part or big part is separated from
the body, it has no value. It has no value. This finger, a very small part
of your body. If there is any pain, you spend thousands of dollars. You pay
to the physician to cure the pain thousands of dollars, and when the
physician says that "This finger has to be," what is called, "dislocated or
cut off, separated, otherwise the whole body will be infected," so when this
finger is cut off from your body, you don't care for it. No more value. Just
try to understand. A typewriting machine, a small screw, when it is missing,
your machine is not working nicely, you go to a repairing shop. He charges
ten dollars. You pay immediately. That little screw, when it is out of that
machine, it has not a value even one farthing. Similarly, we are all part
and parcel of the Supreme. If we work with the Supreme, that means if we
work in Krsna consciousness or God consciousness, that "I am part and
parcel…" Just like this finger is working fully in consciousness of my
body. Whenever there is little pain I can feel. Similarly, if you dovetail
yourself in Krsna consciousness, you are living in your normal condition,
your life is successful. And as soon as you are separated from Krsna
consciousness, the whole trouble is there.

What pure devotees discuss, and the effect of hearing them

In an assembly of pure devotees, there is no question of discussing material
subjects like politics and sociology. In an assembly of pure devotees, there
is discussion only of the qualities, forms and pastimes of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. He is praised and worshiped with full attention. In
the association of pure devotees, by constantly hearing such topics
respectfully, even a person who wants to merge into the existence of the
Absolute Truth abandons this idea and gradually becomes attached to the
service of Vasudeva. SB 5.12.13

You Can't Learn to Swim Unless You Get in the Water

Question:
For a very long time, I have felt very nervous about joining devotees on Harinama or book distribution. Honestly, I feel a bit embarrassed at the thought of my friends seeing me with devotees, or seeing me distributing books or seeing me in a Tilaka etc. I am worried people will think this guy is a nut or a fool! I am worried they will judge me and I will lose my so-called social standing.
Right from my childhood, I have been a very shy and lonely person and I am always easily embarrassed. I grew up with severe inferiority complex in my childhood. Both my parents were completely uneducated, not respected, not well off etc. They passed that over to me. That low self esteem has
stayed with me. Hence I am very scared and nervous of doing anything public.
Maharaja, I am very much worried that this nature of mine will interfere with my future service to you. How do I fix this issue? I really really want to make progress and I will follow any order you give me here to correct this situation.

Theological inspiration

Prajapati: …The most famous theologian of this century named Paul Tillich
said that all words are symbols, and God is a religious symbol pointing to
our ultimate concern.
Prabhupada: Yes, that's nice. We say also.
Karandhara: Except Paul Tillich was the ultimate rascal. He was a debaucher.
He debauched women all over Europe.
Hrdayananda: He recently died.
Karandhara: There is a book about him, a very inflammatory book about how he
would debauch all of his friends. He said he got all of his inspirations
after having sex with other women. He said after having sex he would get his
inspirations on theology.
Prabhupäda: Sometimes the drunkards say also like that. They get inspiration
by drinking.

snake charmers

In India still there are snake charmers. If one is bitten by a snake he
remains unconscious. By mantra he can be brought into consciousness, in
life. Enechi ausadhi maya nasibaro lagi'. Lord Caitanya said that "I have
brought the medicine." Maya nasibaro lagi'. Just like the snake charmers,
they chant mantra. That is factual. It is not story. One medical
practitioner friend of mine, when he was student in Lucknow, he stated that
there is a palace building, Satar Manji?(?) Satar Manju, in Lucknow. There
is some government office. So there were several snakebite cases. Several
men were killed by snakebite. So they could understand that there is a
venomous snake in this building; at the opportunity he bites. So one
snakecharmer was called, and one Muhammadan snakecharmer, he came, and he
captured that snake and took it away.
Now these medical students, they do not believe in these mantras. They were
surprised. They think that snakebite means finished, there is no medicine.
So they were very much, because they were students, very much inquisitive.
They went to that charmer at his place and wanted to know from him what is
the secret, is it a fact that mantra… So he said, "All right, I shall show
you." So he opened one box, and several hundred snakes immediately came out.
And all the students, they became so disturbed. Some were crying, some were
this way, that way… (laughter) Yes. And the charmer said, "Don't be
worried. So long I am here they will not bite. And don't think that these
snakes are without poison teeth." He took some of them and showed that "Here
is a poison teeth. Not that the poison teeth has been taken away. The poison
teeth is there. But by our mantra, we subdue it. He cannot do any harm." So
the doctor students, medical students inquired that, "Can we not use this
mantra?" Said, "No. You cannot." Because it has to be… (end)

Voluntarily and with great pleasure

Krsna does not force. Krsna says that "You surrender unto Me." He does not
force, that "You must surrender. I am God. You are My part and parcel." No,
He'll never say that. Because He has given you little independence, He will
not touch it. Otherwise what is the difference between a stone and a living
entity? A living entity must have independence, although it is very little,
minute. That Krsna does not touch. He'll never touch. You'll have to agree,
"Yes, Krsna, I shall surrender unto You. Yes. That is for my benefit." This
is Krsna consciousness. You must voluntarily agree, not hackneyed,
mechanical. "Spiritual master says like this right. All right let me do it."
No. You have to understand very nicely. Tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam
priti-purvakam [Bg. 10.10]. Priti, with love. When you work, when you work
for Krsna with love and enthusiasm, that is your Krsna conscious life. If
you think that "It is hackneyed, it is troublesome, but what can I do? These
people ask me to do it. I have to do it," that is not Krsna consciousness.
You have to do it voluntarily and with great pleasure.

On the advent of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura

"Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada immediately took up the
land. He continued that 'There is no need of establishing many temples.
Better we publish some books.' He said like that.
"He said that 'We started our this Gaudiya Matha in Ultadanga. The rent was
very small, and if we could gather two to two-hundred-fifty rupees, it was
very nice, going on. But since this J. V. Datta has given us this stone,
marble stone thakurbari, our competition between the disciples has
increased. So I don't like any more. Rather, I would prefer to take out the
marble stone and sell it and publish some books.'
"So I took that point, and he also especially advised me, 'If you get money,
you try to publish books.' So by his blessing it has become very successful
by your cooperation. Now our books are being sold all over the world, and it
is very satisfactory sale. So on this particular day of Bhaktisiddhanta
Sarasvati Thakura's advent, try to remember his words. That he wanted many
books should be published about our philosophy, and it should be given to
the English-knowing public especially, because English language is now world
language. We are touring all over the world. Anywhere we speak English, it
is understood, except in some places.
"So on this day, particularly on the advent of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
Thakura, I especially request my disciples who are cooperating with me that
you try to publish books as many as possible and distribute throughout the
whole world. That will satisfy Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu as well as
Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.
From a lecture on Feb 20, 1976, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura's
Vyasa-puja
