self-interest: we should not remain mudha
…the position of all living entities within this material world: encaged
by maya, illusion, they have forgotten what is the self-interest. The
self-interest is: go back to home, back to Godhead. That is real-self
interest. So every intelligent man should first of all see to his
self-interest, how to become free from this repetition of birth and death
and go back to home, back to God. That is self-interest. And if we do not
know, we do not execute in that way — that means Krsna consciousness

Srila Prabhupada chastises
Sometimes he would chastise for no reason. Once in Hawaii, he sent his
servant at 12:30 a.m. to wake me. The servant said, “Srila Prabhupada wants
to talk with you.” So I went there, sat down, and Prabhupada excused the
servant. We were sitting alone. I said, “Yes, Srila Prabhupada?” I thought I
was doing well. I was sleeping five hours a day, getting up, serving, and
organizing. Srila Prabhupada said, “What are you doing?” I said, “Taking
rest.” “Why?” “Because I’m tired.” “Why are you tired?” He said, “I am
sitting here translating books. I have had only one-and-a-half hours sleep,
that is sufficient. Why you cannot sit with me and translate?” I said,
“Srila Prabhupada, you’re a paramahamsa, I am a beginner.” “Why you are not
a paramahamsa?” I became frustrated and angry. What did I do? People thought
it was easy to be around His Divine Grace. I laugh at that. I scoff. That
time in Hawaii he got me in a corner and there was nothing left to do, so I
started to cry. I was defeated. Then he hugged me, told me a story about
Krsna from the Krsna book and said, “Now go take rest.” He sent me to bed
like a kid.

Vedic knowledge
There is no cheating. There is no imperfection. There is no illusion. There
is no error. That is Vedic knowledge.

Happy guru
When a disciple very perfectly makes progress in spiritual life, this
gladdens the spiritual master, who then also smiles in ecstasy, thinking,
“How successful my disciple has become!” He feels so glad that he smiles as
he enjoys the progress of the disciple, just as a smiling parent enjoys the
activities of a child who is trying to stand up or crawl perfectly.

What Srila Prabhupada came to give
When I was speaking in Berkeley University sometimes in the year 1966, one
Indian student stood up and he said, “Swamiji, what this Krsna consciousness
movement will do? We require now technology.” So I replied, “Yes. You are
after technology. So you are a beggar. I am not a beggar. I have come here
to give something. That is the difference. I have come here to give some
culture, and you have come to imitate the Western civilization by
technology. That is the difference. You’ll remain a beggar, I shall remain a
giver. That is the difference.” So still I am maintaining that position of
giving, not taking. Before me, so many swamijis went there. They did not
give, but they took something and came here and advertised themselves as
foreign-returned sannyasi and exploited the people. They lost even their
original dress. Everyone knows, I have never changed my dress. Rather, I
have given the dress to the foreigners, and they have taken it. The
Ramakrishna mission people came to request me that I dress myself in coat,
pant, hat. Because they are doing. Their so-called swamis, they are dressed
in coat, pant, hat.
So this is a culture. This culture is meant for the human society.
Fortunately this culture developed on this land of Bharatavarsa.
Unfortunately, people are so much bewildered that they are giving up this
culture. That is the most regrettable portion of, of our movement. Anyway,
my mission was that I shall go to America, and if some of the American boys
and girls, younger section, would accept it, then I’ll bring them here to
show these rascals that how great this culture is.

Fall down for millions of years
Very cautiously and intelligently we have to make progress in spiritual
life. Don’t take it very insignificantly. We should be very much careful.
Otherwise there is falldown, and once falldown means a gap of millions of
years. You have got this human form of life to complete Krsna consciousness,
but if you are not serious, then again the gap will be millions of years.

our only business
Saranagati, surrender to Krsna, is our only business. This Krsna
consciousness movement is trying to teach people not to declare
independence, which is not possible, nor to try to make this world happy
without Krsna. That is not possible. That is our propaganda. Whatever you
do, take shelter of Krsna,
