Fire, Butter, and Dhira
If you put butter before the fire, automatically it melts. Similarly, a woman is considered as fire and the man is considered as butter. So this is natural. But a person who is not agitated, he is called dhira.

For Durga-puja: why is there uninterest in Krsna?
Krsna takes special care of the devotee, guides him, gives him intelligence. What kind of intelligence? Yena mam upayanti te. Just to give him the clue how one can go back to home, back to Godhead. Krsna does not give intelligence how one can gain some material prosperity. That is entrusted to the maya — daivi maya or Durgadevi. Therefore people are not very much interested in worshiping Krsna.

Democracy: fools and rascals and sudras
In the modern age of democracy there are so many government representatives voting for legislation. Every day they bring out a new law. But because these laws are only mental concoctions manufactured by inexperienced conditioned souls, they cannot give relief to human society. Formerly, although the kings were autocrats, they strictly followed the principles laid down by great sages and saintly persons. There were no mistakes in ruling over the country, and everything went perfectly. The citizens were completely pious, the king levied taxes legitimately, and therefore the situation was very happy. At the present moment the so-called executive heads are more or less selected from materially ambitious persons who simply look after their own personal interests; they have no knowledge of the sastras. In other words, the executive heads are fools and rascals in the strict sense of the terms, and the people in general are sudras. This combination of fools and rascals and sudras cannot bring about peace and prosperity in this world. Therefore we find periodic upheavals in society in the forms of battles, communal riots and fratricidal quarrels. Under these circumstances, not only are the leaders unable to lead the people toward liberation, but they cannot even give them peace of mind. In Bhagavad-gita it is stated that anyone who lives on concocted ideas, without reference to the sastras, never becomes successful and does not attain happiness or liberation after death.

We are good but have become bad
As God is good, we are also good. But due to our material association, we have become bad. So if we revive our old position, Krsna consciousness, then automatically we shall become all-good.

Love, trust, push ahead
Our Society is like one big family and our relationships should be based on love and trust. We must give up the fighting spirit and use our intelligence to push ahead.

no longer indebted
We are in so many ways indebted. Our obligations are there. But sarvatmana yah saranam saranyam gato mukundam, na rni na kinkarah. The Bhagavata says, “If somebody fully surrenders unto the Supreme, Mukunda…” Mukunda means one who can offer you liberation from this material bondage. He is Mukunda. So if one surrenders fully unto Krsna — Krsna is Mukunda — then he is no longer any more indebted to all these obligations. He is immune. At one stroke he becomes liquidated from all obligation.

Try to repay
If Krsna does not supply you this light, sunlight, you will die. But He does not charge anything. But because you are human being, you should try to repay: “Oh, Krsna is giving us so much facilities. Let me render some service unto Him.” This is Krsna consciousness. This is to acknowledge, “O God, You are so kind. You are giving so many things. So I have collected this fruit. It is Your fruit, I know. Still, please accept.”

Serving the spiritual master at any cost
The disciple’s duty is to be ready always to serve the spiritual master, at any cost.

Krsna is not poor and hungry; He wants devotion
Krsna is not poor. Krsna has not come here, He is very hungry, He has come here to eat your puri and rasagulla. No. (laughter) (laughs) Don’t think like that. But Krsna is so kind that He has come before you to accept whatever you can offer with devotion.

1972

We are in danger — pray!
Suppose if immediately there is some earthquake or there is some danger, naturally, spontaneously, we pray. We pray. But we forget it. But the prayer, the tendency of offering prayer to the Lord at the time of danger, is automatic. So we should know that we are in danger. We are in this material condition of life means we are in danger. Therefore we should pray.
