What Society Expects of Mommies (And How We're Going to Bust That Wide Open)

pressures of motherhood

So, what does an OB/GYN have to say about Mommyhood? (Hearts n' rainbows? Not always, Pinkies!) We think you'll enjoy Lissa's fabulous exploration of her own experience with Mommyhood, the pressures therein, and our intentions to bust these SuperMama myths wiiiiiide open!

What I signed up for

When Matt's sperm met my egg in a fallopian tube deep within me, I had no idea what I was signing up for. Sure, I stopped my birth control pills intentionally, and yes, I'm an OB/GYN, so I'm pretty up on how babies are made. We consciously made the decision to become parents, and I was pretty sure that having unprotected sex would lead to a pregnancy, and that nine months later, I would give birth.

How To Desire More & Still Appreciate What You Have: Overcoming UnderDREAMing - Part 2

desire more

One of my Get Out Of Your Own Way students posted this in our private forum. With her permission, I wanted to share it because I think this is such a common way we prevent ourselves from dreaming big. In Part 1 of the Overcoming UnderDREAMing series, we tackled how to practice dreaming big so you exercise this skill like a muscle. In Part 2, we'll address how to be grateful and still live the mojo-full life we all deserve.

Can Your Hormone Creams Give Your Guy, Your Child, Or Your Cat Boobs?

exposure to hormones

Ever since the data from the Women's Health Initiative demonstrated the risks of taking the synthetic hormones PremPro and Premarin, the use of topical hormones, especially compounded bio-identical hormone creams popularized by people like Suzanne Somers, have surged. Because topical hormones (applied to the skin) bypass the "first pass effect" through the liver, they are believed to be safer, with fewer risks. So patches like the Vivelle Dot, sprays like Eva-Mist, and estrogen creams and gels like those made at compounding pharmacies have become all the rage these days.

How To Treat Insomnia Naturally

natural treatment for insomnia

We've all been there. You go to bed right on time, knowing the alarm will jar you awake 8 hours later. You've got a big presentation in the morning. Or your grad school interview is the next day. Or you just know the baby will be waking you soon. So it's critical that you fall asleep - now.

I'm Putting On My White Coat - AGAIN

Lissa white coat

I've tried to leave medicine at least a dozen times. Medicine and I are like that couple that keeps breaking up and getting back together again, the ones you're sure are done this time, only they kiss and make up and ultimately wind up engaged, leaving you partly baffled and partly affirmed, since you always suspected they were perfect for each other.

For All the New Moms Who Feel Clueless

Lately, I've been talking to a lot of new mothers who feel so much pressure to have it all together and don't feel safe expressing how overwhelming it can be to have a child. If you have a new baby, and you're feeling like you have no clue how to be a mother, you're SO not alone. When my daughter Siena was born, I felt so unraveled by her, as if she could see right through me to all my insecurities. I wrote this in my journal when she was just a wee one, so if you or someone you love has a new baby, this post is for you...

Does Coffee Cause Cancer?

coffee and cancer?

It's not just cell phones the WHO calls carcinogens. Now, according to this article, they've added coffee and pickled veggies to the list as well.

Most of us aren't chowing down regularly on pickled veggies, so I'm guessing this finding won't wind up all over Twitter and Facebook. But, uh…coffee? How 'bout that cup a joe, love?
