33 Signs You've Found Your Life's Work

Happy Labor Day loves! In honor of the day I thought I'd offer up some signs that mean that the work you're laboring over is actually your life's work.
When I work with patients, I always ask them whether they're doing their life's work, because I truly believe that how we spend most of our day, and whether it's in line with our life's work, affects our health. When I ask a woman if she's doing her life's work, way too often, she stares at me blankly.

How To Get Pregnant

It might seem like a simple question - how can you get pregnant? But apparently, 24 million people search "how can I get pregnant" on Google every month. So as an OB/GYN and mother, I want to help.

Are Your Daughters Too Pretty To Do Their Homework?

The world's most offensive t-shirt reads, "I'm too pretty to do my homework so my brother has to do it for me." The product description on JCPenney's website says, — "Who has time for homework when there's a new Justin Bieber album out? She'll love this tee that's just as cute and sassy as she is."
Um. EXCUSE ME.

State Of The Pink Union

Summer is over at the Rankin household. Siena's back in school. The long, lazy days of swimming at Mom's lake house and riding rollercoasters at Cedar Point are behind us. And it's almost past Labor Day.
So I find myself on this day, pausing to take a deep breath, to examine where I've been, to explore where I'm going, and to let you in on my process, since you've been watching me bumble along - plundering and strewing at times - as I figure it out.
How Can You Get Herpes?

20 million American women suffer from pain with sex, and as an OB/GYN physician and someone who overcame painful sex, a lot of these women find their way to me. Sometimes, especially when the problem is new, it turns out that the reason a woman is having pain with sex is because she has the new onset of herpes. Too often, I've had to be the bearer of bad news. This doesn't go over well.
The first question women ask me is "How did I get herpes?"

When Mom Brings Out The Worst In You

My daughter Siena and I spent much of the summer at my mother's lake house in Ohio. It was the longest I had lived in my mother's house since I was in college. And to make it even weirder, Ohio was not my home. (My parents are the only people I know who sold their beach house in Florida to retire in Ohio.) So I felt a bit like a fish out of water in the first place.

How To Choose Freedom Over Fear

I spent most of my life being afraid—afraid of failure, afraid of success, afraid of what people might think, afraid of change, but also afraid of horror movies, rollercoasters, big cities, dark alleys, travel, and the boogey man. My mind could invent worst-case scenarios like Hollywood's best screenwriter, and I'd watch those movies in my mind in such vivid detail that they felt real—and paralyzed me.

Turn Off The TV & Live Longer

The fact that I don't own a television makes me a bit of a social misfit, especially when I'm the one ON the television, and my own kid can't tune in to see Mommy on the boob tube.
It's been over seven years since I cancelled my cable subscription, and I can honestly say it was one of the smartest things I've ever done.

10 Things I Learned From People Who Survive Cancer

When I interviewed women who had survived breast cancer for my art project The Woman Inside, I noticed that they all shared one remarkable thing in common.

My Life As A Pot

I recently spent a week up on Lake Erie at the Lakeside resort, which is a Chautauqua community owned by the Methodist church, where like-minded individuals gather for education, as well as spiritual and emotional development (at least that's what it says on the brochure). Really, it feels more like summer camp.
Little cottages with picket fences line the streets in a grid down to the lakefront, where a park stretches the length of the shore and is lined with putt-putt golf, shuffleboard courts, tennis courts, a historic lakefront hotel, a foot trail, a playground or two, an ice cream parlor, a pizza joint, sunfish sailing, kayaks, a swimming beach, and various sundry diversions. Essentially, there's just fun stuff to do all day long.
