I Suck as an Author

[image error]Yes, after much introspection, soul-searching, and a brief argument with a Magic 8-ball, I have come to a painfully obvious conclusion:

I suck as an author.

Oh, not as a writer. As a writer, I consider myself to be fairly decent, if a bit slow. I’m no Hemingway or Tolkien, of course, but my Jaben’s Rift trilogy generally gets good reviews (even from readers who don’t know me). I’ve gotten compliments on my descriptions, my dialogue, story line, etc. So, while there’s always something that can...

Beginnings

Jason’s eyes flew open. The window showed nothing but darkness outside. Several candles provided a pale flickering light. He looked around the room, and saw Lenai standing against the wa...

Giant Leaps or Small Steps?

[image error]The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. – Chinese Proverb

Imagine this scene. You’re standing at the base of a flight of stairs. At the top of the stairs, you see a very large present, wrapped in bright, shiny paper with a massive bow on the top. A big tag with your name on it hangs from the bow. You’re about to start up the stairs, when someone stops you and says,

“The present is for you, but you can only have it if you can get from here to the top of the stairs...

Lore’s Haven

Reyga stood before the Circle. As soon as he and the others arrived at Lore’s Haven, he had gone to the High One’s chambers. Minutes later, he followed a grim-faced Tal Vardyn back out...

Reunion

Time stood still for Jason. He wasn’t even sure if he was breathing. From the edge of his vision, he could see Reyga staring at him in confusion. The three warriors watched him with express...

Climbing the Mountain

Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start. – Nido Qubein

[image error]FreeImages.com / Thiago Rezende

Let’s face it, not everyone is in the same circumstances. Some people come into this world having everything handed to them on a silver platter. The rest of us aren’t quite so lucky. For most of us, there will be at least a few obstacles to overcome before we reach the goals we set for ourselves. Maybe the dream we’re chasing is something that no...

On the Road

“So, what’s a chaotic rift?” Jason asked. They were sitting in a small clearing, taking a short rest break to have lunch.

Reyga chewed his food for a moment, then swallowed and said, “Most of the few remaining rifts are stable. In other words, they are anchor...

My Half-Cent(ury)’s Worth

[image error]I turned 50 in the summer of 2013. It’s a milestone about which I have mixed emotions.

On the one hand, I’m very happy—and mildly surprised—to have made it to 50, considering some of the “it seemed like a good idea at the time” actions of my youth. I don’t have any serious medical problems, I still have all of my major body parts intact and all of my hair, although there’s a little more beach and a little less waves these days, I’m still fairly clear-headed (of course, opinions vary), and it’...

A Matter of Opinions

Jason woke from a dreamless sleep to someone shaking him. As he pried his gritty eyes open, he saw Reyga.

“Oh, did I doze off while you were talking?” he asked with a yawn. “Sorry about that. What were you saying?”

“No, my boy, it is time to get up....
