Two Mistakes in Ready Player One (the movie) Only an Editor Would Notice

So, I didn’t get around to watching Ready Player One in the theaters. My first experience with it was renting it on HBO via Amazon Prime. After I’d watched it (twice), I immediately went out to the store and bought the DVD. Yes, I love this movie. Not only am I amazed at the technological aspect of the animation and motion capture, but as a teen of the 80s it’s almost a game trying to spot all of the retro references heavily sprinkled throughout the movie. I also read the book after watchin...

Life’s Little Alphabet – ‘J’ is for Joy

[image error]Have you ever heard someone say that this thing or that thing, or doing this activity or that one, gives them joy? Would it surprise you very much to know that, technically, they’re wrong?

I know what you must be thinking. How can I possibly know what gives another person joy? Well, it’s because, quite technically, nothing can give a person joy. Now, before you start rattling off all the things that give you joy, consider this: Saying that something gives joy is saying that joy is something t...

Life’s Little Alphabet – ‘I’ is for Imagine

[image error]Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” Or to put it more simply, imagination has been, and will be, the driving force behind every discovery and creation achieved by humanity.

Think about it. Almost every great accomplishment or invention throughout history began in someone’s imagination. People used to...

Life’s Little Alphabet – ‘H’ is for Help

[image error]Help. It’s such a small word, and yet it can have such a profound impact on our lives. How much of our lives have we depended on receiving help from others? For the first few years of our lives, we need help to do practically anything at all. Then, as we grow, we start learning how to do simple things on our own, but we’re still not shy about asking for help with anything we find too difficult. Once we become teenagers, we’re pretty sure we have a handle on this thing called “life,” but we st...

Life’s Little Alphabet – ‘G’ is for Gratitude

[image error]It just seems right that “gratitude” should rhyme with “attitude” since they almost always go hand in hand. They’re like BFFs. Where you find one, the other is almost sure to follow.

Positive gratitude = positive attitude.

Negative gratitude = negative attitude.

Think about it. Think about any person you know who always seems to have a positive attitude. How many times can you remember them finding the “bright side” to a situation that any reasonable person would see as bad? Talk about annoyi...

Life’s Little Alphabet – ‘F’ is for Forgive

[image error]Mahatma Gandi once said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” Now, when he said this, he wasn’t insulting people who find it hard to forgive others; he was making a commentary on how hard true forgiveness really is. In fact, forgiving someone who has hurt you or wronged you may be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do in your life. As imperfect human beings, we tend to want to hold onto the pain someone else has caused us, thinking that the pain will re...

Life’s Little Alphabet – ‘E’ is for Effort

[image error]When our children were growing up, we always told them, “We don’t expect you to be the best, but we do expect you to try your best.” Now, why would we tell them we didn’t expect them to be the best? Didn’t we want them to excel and succeed? Of course we did. But we knew that if we told them we expected them to be THE BEST, that was putting a lot of pressure on young shoulders. They might have gotten discouraged before they even started, and not put their entire effort into it, thinking there...

Surprise

“But I thought Nyala told you the past could not be changed,” Reyga said.

“That’s just it,” Jason said. “I didn’t change the past, because what we thought happened didn’t really happen.”

“Well, all I know is that I thought I...

Life’s Little Alphabet – ‘D’ is for Dreams

[image error]Many people—including yours truly—often use the words “dreams” and “goals” interchangeably. And, depending upon the context in which they’re used, that might be okay in certain instances. However, to truly understand our own motivations and why we do what we do when we’re trying to achieve something, we need to realize that dreams and goals aren’t actually the same things.

Goals help us realize our dreams. Dreams motivate us to achieve our goals.

See the difference? No? Let me explain. It’s a...
