I'm late to the party reading this, but so pleased to have found Mr. Rochester by Sarah Shoemaker. There's a longer review of this book, incorporating thoughts from the recent 2025 Bronte Conference, and a short review of Rochester by J.L. Niemann all ...more |

I grabbed this book up to read "a novel inspired by Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre" from Edward's POV. That concept was intriguing to me. The idea that this story began as a fanfiction that brought joy to a community online is great, but I'm not sure I l ...more |

I didn't love it; didn't hate it. I didn't like the MC or the actor-turned-professor she went to 1815 with, but I understood their stated mission to steal letters and the manuscript of The Watsons from Jane Austen. I get it. But the plot plodded in a ...more |

I enjoyed the conversational and thoughtful tone of the presentation here. Corin Nemec shares his mentor's New Era Acting Technique (NEAT) within the overarching idea of Creationist versus Method Acting, but it's not all about how to use this for act ...more

I was introduced to Anthony Trollope with "Can You Forgive Her" and enjoyed it. The Oxford World's Classics version of "The Warden" was my next foray into Trollope so I could start the Barsetshire series. I enjoyed it very much! Of course, it's the w ...more

No spoilers here. I enjoyed this twisted fairy tale/retelling and used it for my Fractured Fairy Tale Reading Challenge at my BookTube channel. Hazel is a relatable character. We root for her and understand when she's making tough decisions, even when ...more |

“Jane, be still; don't struggle so like a wild, frantic bird, that is rending its own plumage in its desperation."
"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being, with an independent will; which I now exert to leave you.”
― Jane Eyre
"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being, with an independent will; which I now exert to leave you.”
― Jane Eyre

“I was once reproved by a minister who was driving a poor beast to some meeting-house horse-sheds among the hills of New Hampshire, because I was bending my steps to a mountain-top on the Sabbath, instead of a church, when I would have gone farther than he to hear a true word spoken on that or any day. He declared that I was 'breaking the Lord's fourth commandment,' and proceeded to enumerate, in a sepulchral tone, the disasters which had befallen him whenever he had done any ordinary work on the Sabbath. He really thought that a god was on the watch to trip up those men who followed any secular work on this day, and did not see that it was the evil conscience of the workers that did it. The country is full of this superstition, so that when one enters a village, the church, not only really but from association, is the ugliest looking building in it, because it is the one in which human nature stoops the lowest and is most disgraced. Certainly, such temples as these shall erelong cease to deform the landscape. There are few things more disheartening and disgusting than when you are walking the streets of a strange village on the Sabbath, to hear a preacher shouting like a boatswain in a gale of wind, and thus harshly profaning the quiet atmosphere of the day.”

The time is not relevant. The GoodReads giveaway is all day every day until August 20th. Do not set your alarm clock.
:-)
Thanks for the heads-up.

I love that photo of you with your very large sword!
It's great to see you here on GoodReads. You know, if there isn't an eco-group, we should start one.
You were fabulous on my Bear Awareness radio show, and I look forward to talking conservation with you on the sea otter or manatee awareness shows.
Hugs,
