This photo was taken on July 20 in downtown Holyoke. Holyoke is home to about 40,100 people. About 53 percent of the population of Holyoke is people of color. Holyoke is less than an hour by car from Vermont, the whitest state in the nation with 6 percent people of color.

Sierra Leone All Stars Concert Is August 18
The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars will perform a concert in Northampton on August 18. The show at the Iron Horse Music Hall will start at 7 p.m. The band performed an outstanding public concert at the same venue last summer. The night club appeared to be almost sold out and most of the people at the concert danced. Also last year, the All Stars released an excellent album, Radio Salone. Most of the songs on the album are Afro-Pop or “high life” style. Some are reggae.
Eight Women Arrested at Valley Nuke Protest
On July 15, eight women were arrested for non-violent civil disobedience at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. Vermont Yankee is three miles from Massachusetts and a stone’s throw from New Hampshire. Among the women was Hattie Nestel of Athol, Massachusetts.

On July 11 in West Springfield, people protested at Wells Fargo Corporation, which has been forcing poor people out of their homes, while paying its CEO millions of dollars a year. The protest was organized by www.SpringfieldNoOneLeaves.org. It was at 171 Park Avenue. Local Experts: Cutting Military Budget Would Help Valley
If the government spent less on the military, life in the Valley would almost certainly improve, according to local experts. In the Valley, it’s likely that people are dying because they don’t have health insurance. In 2010, more than 44,000 Americans died because the U.S. does not have universal health care, which Canada, Cuba, Europe, Japan, and every other rich nation has. That’s according to congressman Alan Grayson.
