First Post

Hey all! Eric Arvin here. This is the very first post of my new blog devoted to my writing. Many of you might know me from my blog Daventry Blue, whereon I post on everything from my books to music to sexy fellas. This new site will focus entirely on my writing.
For those of you unfamiliar with my writing, here's a blurb:
Eric Arvin resides in the same sleepy Indiana river town where he grew up. He graduated from Hanover College with a Bachelors in History. He has lived, for brief periods, in Italy and Australia. He has survived brain surgery and his own loud-mouthed personal demons. Eric is the author of THE REST IS ILLUSION, SUBSURDITY, SUBURBILICIOUS, SIMPLE MEN, ANOTHER ENCHANTED APRIL, WOKE UP IN A STRANGE PLACE, GALLEY PROOF, and various other sundry and not-so-sundry writings. He intends to live the rest of his days with tongue in cheek and eyes set to roam.
As the site progresses I will add links, etc. Please bear with me, or, as the French say, bear avec moi. This should be fun...or at least an informative diversion. Later.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Altered State" by Teddy Thompson - This CD, Separate Ways, made my Top 10 the year it was released. I didn't immediately love it, but by the third listen it was settling in.
"Rexroth's Daughter" by Joan Baez - Joan's fantastic remake of Greg Brown's AMAZING song. (Those lyrics are killer!) Honestly, I like her version better.
"Smithereens" by Annie Lennox - Her career has been so deep and moving since she broke with Dave Stewart.
"Until I Die" by Brandi Carlile - Power-house voice! Both of her studio CDs have made my Top 10.
"Amazing" by Madonna - Fun song a la "Beautiful Stranger." Music is a good little album with a few great songs.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Fix You" by Coldplay - One of my favorite Coldplay songs. So emotional. I wish the chorus section at the end went on for at least one more repetition. I had a whole Broadway scene designed in my head for this one, including a coming together of families in a cemetery and an angel... And Loretta Divine.
"Don't Get Your Back Up" by Sarah Harmer - Love her gravelly soul sound.
"That Says it All" by Duncan Shiek - From his great Humming CD. He name-drops a list of singers that had a big influence on him, including Nick Drake and Brian Wilson. I remember playing this one quiet night for a good friend and him saying it was the song he had always wanted to write.
"A Candle's Fire" by Beirut - I enjoy their sound. This CD will grow on you.
"The Great Work Begins" by Thomas Newman - The end piece to Newman's score for Mike Nichol's brilliant adaptation of Tony Kushner's Angels in America. Sometimes I design whole scenes in my writing around Newman scores.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Four Seasons in One Day" by Crowded House - A classic. Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin do a great live version of this.
"The King & Queen of America" by Eurythmics - One of my absolute favorites by this duo. I believe this was from the last album they released before they split (reuniting ten years later for the under appreciated Peace).
"It Ain't Me, Babe" by Lucy Kaplansky - Lovely remake of Bob Dylan's song.
"Cold Water" by Damien Rice - Excuse me while I go drink myself into a deeper depression. Damn you and your heartfelt chamber music, Damien Rice! I saw this used in manipulative conjunction with the 04 tsunami. My lip was a-quiver.
"It Takes All Kinds" by Aimee Mann - From Bachelor No. 2, tied with Smilers as my favorite Aimee collection. I remember being so excited about turning people onto this CD in college. I even took it to my Fiction & Poetry class once and played it there.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Body and Soul" by Tori Amos - Tori's sounding all dangerous and sexy here.
"The Way the Whole Thing Ends" by Gillian Welch - From my favorite album of 2011, The Harrow & The Harvest. This song is crying for some whiskey croonin'.
"Superheroes" by The Rocky Horror Picture Show cast - It's strange that one of the oddest films ever made also has such a phenomenal soundtrack.
"For Granted" by Idaho - Moody, beautiful alt rock that's kind of perfect for long drives at night.
"Call" by Joseph Arthur - Haven't really gotten into his latest stuff, as it sounds a bit like retreads of his earlier, great work.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Kindness" by Ryan Adams - From his latest collection Ashes & Fire, which made my Top 10 last year at #3. Very moving work.
"On Your Side" by Pete Yorn - I used to have the biggest crush on this guy. His physicality was what I had in mind when I was writing the character of Baker in Woke Up in a Strange Place .
"Seventh Avenue" by Rosanne Cash - From one of my favorite CDs ever, The Wheel.
"I Know There's a Word" by Aimee Mann - Reminds me of college Friday nights, chilling in my room in Wiley Hall with wine and a few friends as we listened to music. There was a lot of Aimee Mann played.
"The Moon & The Sky" by Sade - That voice!!
