5 Songs Before ...

"Tell My Pa" by Joshua James - Such a unique combination of great songcraft, voice, and angelic looks. He should have a new CD out soon.
"The Perfect Space" by The Avett Brothers - Maybe my favorite of their songs. I love the evolutions the song goes through.
"Bang Bang to the Rock N' Roll" by Gabin - Mom! These French peoples is speaking in tongues! Seriously. I have no idea what is being said in this song, but it's a lot of fun.
"Ghost Woman Blues" by The Low Anthem - Haunter about meeting a ghost as one passes by a graveyard. This album just missed making my Top 10 last year. Like "#11" missed it.
"Family Name" by Peter Bradley Adams - I first heard this guy when he was part of the duo EastMountainSouth. Since then he has released some lovely solo work.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Holly Tree" by Dar Williams - From Promised Land, a Top 10 CD. Haunting song about a pregnant farm widow.
"Cologne" by Dolly Parton - She's a delight! Like the fun aunt who's religious, but doesn't let it get in the way of enjoying her men or her wine.
"Someday" by Middle Brother - Their self-titled debut made #6 on my Top 10 last year. This song has a nice 50's rocker feel to it.
"Sudden Gift of Fate" by Mary Chapin Carpenter - Very thoughtful song. One of many Carpenter has written.
"Churlish May" by Johnny Flynn - If you don't know this handsome British folkie, familiarize yourself.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Boulder to Birmingham" by Emmylou Harris - A live version of one of her great pre-Wrecking Ball songs.
"Honey, I've Been Thinkin' About You" by Jackie Green - Good bluesy number. I actually chose this album, Sweet Somewhere Bound, as my favorite of the year when it was released in 04 or 05. I'm uncertain if the album would even make my Top 10 now, though.
"Touch 'em with Love" by Bobbie Gentry - Touch 'em WHERE, Bobbie?! Got her greatest hits as a gift from my friend Keith. I feel all groovy when I listen to her.
"Departures" by Mt. Desolation - Think Keane gone alt-country.
"Driving Sideways" by Aimee Mann - From the masterpiece Magnolia soundtrack.

5 Songs Before Bed

"Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis - Makes me think of a camping trip I took with my friends to a certain state park, whereat we got silly drunk, some of us got nekkid, and in the morning we were asked never to return. I woke up in the backseat of the car, and was uncertain how I got there.
"The Tale of Solomon Snell" by Duncan Sheik - A little ditty about a man who's buried alive. That Duncan Sheik! What a comedian!
"Out of Time" by Sarah McLachlan - I'll be honest, the latest effort by Miss Sarah took its time growing on me, but it is a lovely work. I'd still rank it behind Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, Surfacing, and Afterglow, though.
"Stone on the Water" by Badly Drawn Boy - Such a chilly, wintry sounding album is The Hour of Bewilderbeast. Love it.
"Paper & Ink" by Tracy Chapman - From her under appreciated Telling Stories. Of Chapman's 8 studio efforts, this is definitely in my top 8....I love them all!! Don't make me choose!

5 Songs Before Bed

"Gold in Them Hills" by Ron Sexsmith/Chris Martin - Pretty little lullaby of a song.
"Pretty Girls" by Neko Case - One of the most powerful vocalists in music. Unique and haunting.
"Midnight Radio" by John Cameron Mitchell - From Hedwig & The Angry Inch. This film fucked me up and I loved it. Dar Williams does a great cover.
"My Weakness" by Moby - More prettiness from the master. This one is like a tide of emotion rolling in.
"Bring on the Wonder" by Susan Enan - First heard this song on an episode of Bones. Sarah McLachlan provides backup. Sarah M. then did her own version on her newest CD. I prefer this version, if only because I'm a sucker for orchestras.
