Time to Blow Up the Banking System – Project Syndicate, March 2023

The banking system we take for granted is unfixable. The good news is that we no longer need to rely on any private, rent-seeking, socially destabilizing network of banks, at least not the way we have so far.This time the banking crisis is different. It is, in fact, worse than in 2007/8 when we could blame the banks’ sequential collapse on wholesale fraud, widespread predatory lending, sickening collusion between rating agencies and shady bankers to peddle derivatives whose value was always going to vanish – not to mention a regulatory mechanism that Wall Street-bred politicians, like Robert Rubin, had only recently dismantled.Today’s bank failures cannot be blamed on any of this. Yes, the Silicon Valley Bank had been foolish enough to combine a strategy of taking on severe interest rate risk while serving mostly uninsured depositors. Yes, Credit Suisse had a sordid history with criminals, fraudsters and corrupt politicians. However, unlike in 2008, no whistleblowers were silenced, banks complied (more or less) with the post-2008 beefed-up regulations, and their assets were relatively solid. Moreover, again unlike 2008, none of the regulators in the United States and Europe could credibly claim to have been blind-sighted.In fact, regulators and central banks knew everything. They enjoyed full access to the banks’ business models. They could see vividly that these business models would not survive the combination of significant long-term interest rate rises and a sudden depositor flight. And yet, they did nothing. Why? One explanation is that they failed to foresee herd-like panic-stricken flight by large, and thus uninsured, depositors? Perhaps. However, the real reason central banks did nothing when confronted by the fragile business models of the banks under their purview is even more disturbing: It was the central banks’ response to the 2008 financial crash that had given birth to the banks’ fragile business models. And they knew it!Our states’ post-2008 policy, practised simultaneously in Europe and the United States, of harsh austerity-for-most and state-socialism-for-the-bankers had two effects that shaped financialised capitalism over the last fourteen years: First, it poisoned the West’s money. More precisely, it ensured that there is no longer a single nominal interest rate (e.g., a number such as 3.6%) capable of restoring the balance between money demand and money supply while, at once, averting a wave of bank failures. Secondly, Western bankers assumed that, if and when inflation reared its ugly head again, central banks would increase interest rates with one hand while bailing them out with the other hand – since it was common knowledge that there exists no single interest rate that achieves both price stability and financial sector stability. Which is, of course, precisely what we are witnessing now!Faced with the stark dilemma between curbing inflation and saving the banks, venerable commentators appeal to central banks to do both: to continue hiking interest rates while continuing with the socialism-for-bankers post-2008 policy that is the only policy which can, others things being equal, stop the banks from failing one after the other. This strategy of tightening the monetary noose around society’s neck while lavishing bailouts upon the banking system is the only way the authorities can simultaneously serve the interests of the creditor class and of the banks. It is also a sure way of condemning the majority to unnecessary suffering (in the hands of avoidably high prices and preventable unemployment) while, also, sowing the seeds of the next banking conflagration.Lest we forget, we have always known that banks were designed not to be safe and that, together, they comprise a banking system constitutionally incapable of abiding by the rules of a well-functioning market. The problem is that, so far, we had no alternative: Banks were the only means of channelling money to the people, through their tellers, branches, ATMs etc. That lack of alternatives turned society into a hostage of a network of private banks that monopolised the functions of payment system, store of savings and source of credit. However, today, technology has furnished us with a splendid alternative.Imagine that the central bank provided everyone with a free digital wallet, effectively a free bank account bearing interest at the central bank overnight rate. Given that the current banking system functions like an anti-social cartel, the central bank might as well use modern digital, cloud-based technology to provide free digital transactions and savings storage to all, its net revenues paying for essential public goods. Freed from the compulsion to keep their money in a private bank, and to pay through the nose in order to transact using its system, people will then be free to choose if and when they wish to use private financial institutions offering risk intermediation between savers and borrowers whose monies will, however, live in perfect safety on the central bank’s ledger.It is at around this point of my proposal that the crypto brotherhood will feign a fit, accusing me of pushing for a Big Brother central bank that sees and controls every transaction we make. Setting aside their stunning hypocrisy, days after they demanded an immediate central bank bailout of their Silicon Valley bankers, let me point out that the Treasury and other organs of the state already have access to each transaction of ours. Indeed, privacy could be better safeguarded if transactions were to be concentrated on the central bank ledger under the supervision of something like a Monetary Supervision Jury comprising randomly selected citizens and experts drawn from a wide range of professions.In summary, the time has come to reach an inevitable conclusion: the banking system we take for granted is unfixable. That’s the bad news. But there is good news. We no longer need to rely, at least not the way we have so far, on any private, rent-seeking, destabilising network of banks. The time has come to blow up an irredeemable banking system which only delivers for property and share owners at the expense of the majority.Coal miners have found out the hard way that society does not owe them a permanent subsidy to damage the planet. It is time for the bankers to make a similar discovery.

Europe’s latest illiberal democracy: Greece! – New Statesman

“Like lambs to the slaughter” was how an elderly neighbour described the deaths of youngsters travelling on Intercity 62 which, on the night of 28 February, crashed head-on with a freight train in Greece killing 57 people. Many of the dead were students returning after a long weekend from Athens to their universities in Thessaloniki. Eighty were injured, 25 of them seriously. And a whole nation fell into mourning and introspection.In common with the Paddington disaster of 1999, the crash generated intense debate over the impact of breaking up and privatising the rail network. Upon hearing the heart-breaking news, my mind raced back to 2015 when, as Greece’s finance minister, I was involved in tense negotiations with “the troika”: the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The reason is that the privatisation of our railways was an issue dear to their hearts.One of the troika’s preconditions during the debt negotiations was that I sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under which our trains would be sold off for a pittance to an impecunious Italian state-owned company, our main port to a Chinese state-owned company and our airports to a German state-owned company – a wholesale takeover of key infrastructure by three foreign states.Naturally, I told them to forget it – as did the Greek people in the July 2015 referendum. Alas, prime minister Alexis Tsipras buckled, prompting me to resign as finance minister and, eventually, to form MeRA25 – a new opposition party. Well before then, the trains, the airports and the ports had gone to the troika’s favourite suitors.Uncontested by the governing left party, Syriza, the privatisation agenda thus became hegemonic. Unsurprisingly, the enthusiastically neoliberal New Democracy was returned to government in 2019. While there was never any great public support for wholesale privatisation, there was also no serious opposition to it. Until, that is, the train accident that claimed so many souls. Suddenly, the tide turned and, led by tens of thousands of youths demonstrating in the streets, the privatisation agenda lost its legitimacy.The sudden crumbling of neoliberalism’s hegemony could not have come at a worse moment for the oligarchs. With a general election looming, their capacity to maintain and expand their hold over public assets is looking fragile for the first time since 2015. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was basking in the glory of an establishment restoration, is now visibly panicked by the re-emergence of dissident voices. Meanwhile, Syriza, which privatised so many public assets under the troika’s watchful eye, seems incapable of attracting disaffected voters, with MeRA25 and other small parties advancing instead.Ten days after the accident, I was dining with my partner and colleagues at our usual haunt – a restaurant in Exarcheia, an Athenian suburb known for its anarchist community but also for its overwhelming police presence. Half an hour into our dinner, a group of seven thugs invaded the restaurant with the clear intention to confront me, or worse.To avoid a brawl, I offered to follow them out to the street, alone, so that they could take me to task for whatever grievances they had. As we were exiting the restaurant, pushed and smacked by their ringleader, one of them denounced me as a signatory of the hated MoU and the privatiser of the railways. Once outside, the ringleader, a man in his late twenties with the look and demeanour of a nightclub bouncer, punched me in the face in the style of a professional, causing me to lose my balance and fall on the pavement – at which point he proceeded to kick me in the face twice before fleeing the scene along with his entourage. Bleeding profusely, and leaning on my shaken colleagues, we made our way to the hospital whose wonderful staff attended to my broken nose and cracked eye socket.Two hours before the first of six eyewitnesses gave a statement to the police, the police minister saw it fit to announce that my assailants had been identified and that a 17-year-old, and later a 19-year-old, were in police custody. A week afterwards, I was summoned by the investigating judge to give a statement. She showed me photos of three youngsters whom I did not recognise. None of them even resembled my assailant, whom I did however recognise clearly in CCTV footage from the scene. Meanwhile, the rightist social media trolls, and the minister himself, spread the fake news that I was shielding my ”‘leftist” assailants. Some even went so far as to claim that I had staged the assault to curry favour with the electorate.As the case remains subjudice, I shall say no more. Politically speaking, however, it is impossible not to notice how the government tried to frame the assault. Along with their media allies, they portrayed me as an anti-establishment politician who fell prey to youths stirred into a frenzy of violence by the rhetoric of politicians such as myself. They did their best to equate, in the public’s mind, my assailants with the thousands of young people demonstrating their anti-establishment fury at 57 deaths.Considered together with years of lethal pushbacks against migrants in the Aegean sea, surveillance of journalists and opposition politicians and the sordid double-speak of our oligarchs over Russian oil, recent events point to a clear pattern: The steady conversion of Greece into another Orbán-style “illiberal democracy”.

On the shameful deal Osborne-Mitsotakis are hammering out over the Parthenon antiquities – UNHERD

From the very beginning, Elgin’s removal of the Parthenon’s statues and friezes caused something of a discursive British civil war. On one side were humanists, like Lord Byron; on the other were Empire apologists, who defend Elgin’s actions and support the British Museum’s inalienable property rights to the artefacts it, eventually, purchased from him.Over the last few years, the people of Britain are increasingly falling on the side of Lord Byron — who, in 1812, mourned the Parthenon’s sorry post-Elgin look: “Dull is the eye that will not weep to see. Thy walls defaced, thy mouldering shrines removed.” According to successive YouGov polls, a clear majority of Britons want to see the Parthenon artefacts displayed in the magnificent New Acropolis Museum, in a special hall overlooking the defaced Parthenon.Alas, the British government and Elgin’s surviving supporters are resisting tooth and nail, insisting that the Parthenon artefacts in the British Museum are its property and must remain so eternally. Their claim to legal property rights is both tendentious and detrimental to the British sense of justice. They point out that Elgin had a permit from the Ottoman occupying forces in Athens to take what he liked from the Acropolis — which, they insist, gave him the right to own and to sell on whatever he removed. Even if we set aside the fact that said Ottoman permit never granted Elgin permission to hack the statues and friezes from the monument with the use of saws, the claim is absurd and, indeed, quite dangerous.Imagine if the Nazi occupying forces in Paris had granted some gentleman a permit to remove statues from the Louvre. Or if Putin’s men in Mariupol were, today, to grant a visiting antiquities dealer a permit to remove priceless artefacts from a local museum. The very notion that these permits bestow secure property rights over the removed artefacts is an affront to every decent person worldwide. As for the British establishment’s usual rejoinder — that the Ottoman occupation of Greece was centuries long, or that Greece had not been a modern nation-state before the Ottomans invaded it — it is terribly disrespectful to scores of Britons who, like Lord Byron, travelled to Greece shortly after Elgin had vandalised the Acropolis to fight alongside the Greeks reclaiming their liberty and founding the modern Greek state.This unending saga is back in the news. For the last six months or so, George Osborne, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer who currently serves as Chair of the British Museum, has been negotiating a deal with the Greek government. It will see a portion of the Parthenon sculptures sent to Athens, on loan, to be displayed at the British Museum in exchange for other antiquities. The real reason Osborne has entered into such negotiations is self-serving: he needs to raise £1 billion to refurbish the British Museum, but fears that, in view of British public opinion, unless he washes away the stench of Elgin’s larceny from the halls and corridors of the British Museum, sponsors will not be forthcoming.Unfortunately, constrained by the British establishment’s determination to insist on maintaining full property rights over the artefacts Elgin brought to England, the deal Osborne is offering the Greek side is shameful. Indeed, it could not be otherwise, as long as the UK government and the British Museum insist that they own the artefacts outright.Think about it: members of the British establishment, who consider the artefacts to be British, and know that the Greek side does not recognise their property rights, oppose even lending them to the New Acropolis Museum, fearing that a Greek court, if not the Greek government, might decree that they not be returned to Britain. The only way they would consider lending them is on the basis of the deal that Mr Osborne is now putting to the Greek government: a deal stipulating that, for the privilege of being lent half the removed Parthenon artefacts, Greek museums must send over other priceless artefacts to be kept in the British Museum as “collateral” — essentially as hostages that will force the Greeks to return the loaned Parthenon marbles.No Greek government can ever agree to such a sordid deal. And no decent Briton should look at it with anything other than deserved scorn.Speaking personally, I think it is absurd, after 200 years, to be having the same discussion. It is upsetting for us Greeks and it is dispiriting for the Brits. I am no cultural nationalist, in that I do not want to see every fragment, every statue, every frieze or vase produced in Classical Greece returned to us. The Parthenon friezes, metopes and pediments are a very, very special case. They were created as integral parts of the Parthenon and were hacked down by Elgin with a permit from our enslavers. They belong neither to the Greeks nor to the Britons. They belong to the Parthenon, with which they can be best re-united if they are displayed in the perfectly-designed room on top of the New Acropolis Museum. It is visually connected with the temple in a manner that would bring tears to any visitor’s eyes.And what about the British Museum? Does it end up with an empty room where the Parthenon relics are now? Absolutely not. As an internationalist, and an Anglophile, I would loathe that. But imagine the following. Let the Parthenon Marbles be re-united with the Parthenon permanently. And let the Greek government commit to keeping the relevant room in the British Museum stocked with a permanent, rotating exhibition of priceless stand-alone classical era treasures. It would allow the people of Britain and international visitors a reason to visit the British Museum again and again and again.In this manner, the Parthenon will become whole again. And the British Museum will be enriched by a never-ending parade of splendid Greek antiquities that function as joyous ambassadors of Classical Greece in central London, not as Mr Osborne’s sad hostages.

Το Νέο Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων & το Νέο Παγκόσμιο Οικονομικό Σύστημα που πρέπει να οικοδομήσουμε – Αβάνα, 27 Ιανουαρίου 2023

Ο Πόλεμος στην Ουκρανία επιτάχυνε την διάσπαση της υφηλίου σε δύο τεχνο-φέουδα – στο ένα οι αξίες εκφράζονται σε δολάρια, στο άλλο σε γουάν. Καθώς ο κόσμος διασπάται, οι ταξικές συγκρούσεις τόσο εντός όσο και μεταξύ αυτών των τεχνο-φέουδων γεννούν καταστροφικές δυνάμεις που απειλούν το είδος μας με εξαφάνιση – από τον Νέο Ψυχρό Πόλεμο, έως πολέμους όπως της Ουκρανίας, πυρηνικές συρράξεις και, βέβαια, την ασυγκράτητη κλιματική κρίση.Σε αυτή τη διάλεξη, που παρουσίασα στην Αβάνα την 27η Ιανουαρίου 2023, επιχειρηματολογώ ότι μόνο ένα Νέο Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων (το οποίο έχει μάθει τα μαθήματά του από την αποτυχία του αρχικού Κινήματος Αδεσμεύτων) μπορεί να βάλει τέλος σε αυτή την κατρακύλα. Όμως, για να το πετύχει, πρέπει πρώτα να εμπνεύσει τους λαούς μας με ένα ρεαλιστικό όραμα ενός αποτελεσματικού, μη εκμεταλλευτικού, δημοκρατικού διεθνούς οικονομικού συστήματος – κάτι που απαιτεί κάτι πολύ πιο ριζοσπαστικό από έναν “φωτισμένο” πράσινο Κεϋνσιανισμό.

Επειδή πρέπει! Γιατί να οικοδομήσουμε Νέο Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων με στόχο την σοσιαλιστική, δημοκρατική, απελευθερωτική Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική Τάξη;

Κεντρική Ομιλία στο 5ο Διεθνές Συνέδριο για την Παγκόσμια Ισορροπία, Αβάνα, 27η Ιανουαρίου 2023

Εισαγωγή: Ένα μήνυμα από την ΑθήναΦίλες και φίλοι, συντρόφισσες και σύντροφοι, συνοδοιπόροι της Προοδευτικής Διεθνούς,Πρώτη φορά βρίσκομαι στην Κούβα. Για δεκαετίες δεν ερχόμουν καθώς δεν ήθελα να έρθω ως περιηγητής. Η Κούβα παραείναι σημαντική για αυτό. Έπρεπε να εξηνταρίσω για να βιώσω την χαρά της έλευσης στην Κούβα με σκοπό να συν-εργαστώ με συντρόφους πάνω σε κάτι που να έχει σημασία για την Κούβα, για την Αμερικανική Ήπειρο, την Ασία, την Αφρική, την Ευρώπη και, ναι, την πολύπαθη χώρα μου, την Ελλάδα. Και τί είναι αυτό για το οποίο ήρθαμε εδώ για να συν-εργαστούμε; Η ίδρυση ενός Νέου Κινήματος Αδεσμεύτων με το οποίο να συντρίψουμε την ισχύουσα, καταστροφικά εκμεταλλευτική, ιμπεριαλιστική, διεθνή οικονομική τάξη ώστε στη θέση της να οικοδομήσουμε μια Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική Τάξη στην οποία άνθρωποι και Γη να μπορούν να αναπνεύσουν, να ζήσουν και να ευημερήσουν – μαζί!Πριν έρθω στο θέμα, νιώθω την ανάγκη να αποτίσω τιμή σε αυτή τη χώρα και στους γενναίους της πολίτες. Όταν το ΜέΡΑ25 ανακοίνωσε το ταξίδι μου τούτο, συνέβη κάτι περίεργο. Το περίεργο δεν ήταν ο οχετός επικρίσεων από τους συνήθεις υπόπτους – από αντι-κομμουνιστές ταμένους να παρουσιάζουν την Κούβα ως κομμουνιστική δυστοπία έως αριστερούς που σήμερα αλληθωρίζουν προς το ριζοσπαστικό κέντρο θεωρώντας την περίπτωση της Κούβας «ξεπερασμένη», στο ίδιο μοτίβο που με χαρακτηρίζουν «επικίνδυνο» για την Ελλάδα επειδή εμμένω στην ιδέα της ρήξης με την ισχυρή ντόπια και διεθνή ολιγαρχία που διαφεντεύει την πατρίδα μου. Το περίεργο ήταν ότι όλοι αυτοί οι επικριτές είχαν κάτι κοινό: Όσο και να προσπαθούν δεν μπορούν να κρύψουν τον σεβασμό τους απέναντι στο λαό της Κούβας!Περπατήστε στην Αθήνα σήμερα. Δείχνει πλουσιότερη και πιο «αναπτυγμένη» από την Αβάνα. Όμως, οι περισσότεροι περπατούν στους Αθηναϊκούς δρόμους με βλέμμα που αντανακλά την ταπείνωση, την αναξιοπρέπεια, την συνειδητοποίηση ότι η δημοκρατία μας είναι μια φάρσα. Γιατί; Επειδή την 5η Ιουλίου του 2015 ήρθαν τόσο, μα τόσο, κοντά στην επανάσταση, με εκείνο το γενναίο 62% κόντρα στο ΔΝΤ, στα αρπακτικά των τραπεζών, στην ντόπια και ξένη ολιγαρχία. Δυστυχώς, εκείνο το βράδυ, ο λαός μας ανατράπηκε από την ηγεσία του και η επανάστασή μας συνετρίβη.Ακόμα και άνθρωποι που αφέθηκαν στην προπαγάνδα ότι δεν υπήρχε εναλλακτική στη συνθηκολόγηση, ακόμα κι αυτοί, σέβονται τον Κουβανικό λαό – για να μην πω ότι σας ζηλεύουν. Γιατί; Επειδή ο λαός της Κούβας δεν συνθηκολόγησε!ΔΙΑΚΗΡΥΞΗ ΤΗΣ ΑΘΗΝΑΣ: Η απαρχή του Νέου Κινήματος Αδεσμεύτων που θα παλέψει για μια Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική ΤάξηΚαι μιας και αναφέρθηκα στην Αθήνα, την 13η Μαΐου 2022, το ΜέΡΑ25 – σε συνεργασία με την Προοδευτική Διεθνή που εκπροσωπούσαμε από κοινού με τον Jeremy Corbyn και την Ece Temelcuran, εξαγγείλαμε την ΔΙΑΚΗΡΥΞΗ ΤΗΣ ΑΘΗΝΑΣ. Ήταν η αντίδρασή μας στον πόλεμο στην Ουκρανία και στις χυδαίες πολεμοχαρείς κραυγές ανά την Ευρώπη. Ήταν το πρώτο κάλεσμα για τη δημιουργία ενός ΝΕΟΥ ΚΙΝΗΜΑΤΟΣ ΑΔΕΣΜΕΥΤΩΝ. Επιτρέψτε μου να διαβάσω αποσπάσματα της Διακήρυξης:«Είμαστε στο πλευρό κάθε λαού που υποφέρει από εισβολή, ξεριζωμό και κατοχή.Απαιτούμε την άμεση κατάπαυση του πυρός, καθώς και περιεκτική Συμφωνία Ειρήνευσης στο πλαίσιο του ΟΗΕ.»«Απορρίπτουμε την διαίρεση της υφηλίου σε ανταγωνιστικά μπλοκ τα οποία επενδύουν στον αχαλίνωτο μιλιταρισμό, σε υπερσύγχρονα όπλα μαζικής καταστροφής, και σ’ ένα Νέο Ψυχρό Πόλεμο.«Πιστεύουμε ότι βιώσιμη Ειρήνη απαιτεί την αντικατάσταση όλων των στρατιωτικών μπλοκ από ένα διεθνές σύστημα ασφάλειας το οποίο αποκλιμακώνει τις εντάσεις, επεκτείνει τις ελευθερίες, αντιμετωπίζει την φτώχεια, περιορίζει την εκμετάλλευση, προωθεί την περιβαντολλογική και κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη, και τερματίζει την επικυριαρχία της μίας χώρας πάνω στην άλλη.»«Με αυτές τις σκέψεις κατά νου, καλούμε όλες και όλους του δημοκράτες της Υφηλίου θα ενώσουμε τις δυνάμεις μας σε ένα ΝΕΟ ΚΙΝΗΜΑ ΑΔΕΣΜΕΥΤΩΝ. Θεωρούμε ότι η συμπόρευση ΑΔΕΣΜΕΥΤΩΝ, ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΚΩΝ, ΚΥΡΙΑΡΧΩΝ ΚΡΑΤΩΝ είναι ο μοναδικός δρόμος προς την Βιώσιμη Ειρήνη και προς ένα κόσμο ικανό να αποτρέψει την ΚΛΙΜΑΤΙΚΗ ΚΑΤΑΣΤΡΟΦΗ και να κληροδοτήσει στην επόμενη γενιά πραγματική ευκαιρία δημιουργίας των συνθηκών για την παγκόσμια κοινή ευημερία.»Με άλλα λόγια, 50 χρόνια μετά την καμπάνια του πρώτου Κινήματος Αδεσμεύτων για τη δημιουργία μιας Νέας Διεθνούς Οικονομικής Τάξης, επιστρέφουμε στο ίδιο σημείο για ξανα-αρχίσουμε από την αρχή. Πρώτα στην Αθήνα τον περασμένο Μάη και τώρα, εδώ, στην Αβάνα. Τουλάχιστον δεν χρειάζεται να γράψουμε νέους λόγους! Αρκεί η επανάληψη όσων είπε ο Φιντέλ τον Οκτώβρη του 1979 απευθυνόμενος στην Γενική Συνέλευση του ΟΗΕ:«Ο αχός των όπλων, τα επιθετικά λόγια κι η αμετροέπεια στη διεθνή σκηνή πρέπει να πάψουν!»«Οι βόμβες μπορούν να σκοτώσουν τους πεινασμένους, τους άρρωστους και τους αμόρφωτους – αλλά δεν μπορούν να σκοτώσουν την πείνα, την αρρώστια, την αμορφωσιά!»«Το επικρατούν, σήμερα, διεθνές νομισματικό σύστημα είναι χρεοκοπημένο. Και πρέπει να αντικατασταθεί!»Δεν δικαιούμαστε να στενοχωριόμαστε που, μετά 44 χρόνια μετά, αναγκαζόμαστε να ξεκινήσουμε ξανά από το μηδέν. Ότι πρέπει να ξαναβγάλουμε τους ίδιους λόγους και να επανα-εκκινήσουμε τις ίδιες καμπάνιες. Θυμηθείτε: Κάθε γενιά είναι καταδικασμένη να δίνει την ίδια μάχη! Ξανά και ξανά και ξανά. Με την συσσωρευμένη εμπειρίας σύμμαχο. Και πάντα μαθαίνοντας από τα λάθη της προηγούμενης γενιάς.Καθώς ξεκινάμε την οικοδόμηση του Νέου Κινήματος Αδεσμεύτων, με απώτερο στόχο την Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική Τάξη Πραγμάτων, καλούμαστε να αναρωτηθούμε: Γιατί ηττηθήκαμε την προηγούμενη φορά; Γιατί χάσαμε κατά κράτος στις δεκαετίες του 1980 και 1990; Γιατί κατατροπώθηκε το πρώτο Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων από την καπιταλιστική παγκοσμιοποίησηΗ ουσία της Παγκοσμιοποίησης και η δομή του νεο-ιμπεριαλιστικού θριάμβουΗ σύντομη απάντηση είναι: Επειδή οι καπιταλιστές αποδείχθηκαν, στην πράξη, καλύτεροι διεθνιστές από εμάς. Επειδή κατανόησαν καλύτερα την διεθνή πάλη των τάξεων – κι, έτσι, επικράτησαν.Τι κατανόησαν καλύτερα από εμάς; Τον Νέο Ιμπεριαλισμό που γεννήθηκε από τις στάχτες του Μπρέττον Γουντς, τότε που το δολάριο έπαψε να είναι μετατρέψιμο σε αμερικανικό χρυσό – κάτι που έκανε τον Νίξον να μηνύσει στους Ευρωπαίους καπιταλιστές και κυβερνητικούς πως το δολάριο ήταν, πλέον,… πρόβλημά τους.Ο Νίξον επιβεβαιώθηκε. Καθώς το αμερικανικό εμπορικό έλλειμμα εκτοξευόταν σε απίστευτα ύψη, ο κόσμος όλος πλημμύριζε με δολάρια τα οποία (καθώς δεν ήταν πια μετατρέψιμα σε χρυσό) οι κεντρικές τράπεζες εκτός ΗΠΑ αναγκάζονταν να χρησιμοποιούν ως αποθεματικά με τα οποία στήριζαν την ισοτιμία των νομισμάτων τους. Έτσι, το δολάριο μετατράπηκε σε ένα ιδιότυπο… IOU, σε μια υποσχετική. Αποτέλεσμα;  Η παγκόσμια ηγεμών δύναμη, οι ΗΠΑ, εξέδιδαν IOU με τα οποία χρηματοδοτούσαν τόσο τις εισαγωγές όσο και το κράτος τους ενώ, παράλληλα, αποφάσιζαν τι μπορούσαν να κάνουν (και τι όχι) με τα IOU τους οι ξένοι κάτοχοί τους.Η Αμερική ήταν πλέον χώρα βαθιά ελλειμματική, αλλά σε τίποτα δεν έμοιαζε με τις υπόλοιπες ελλειμματικές χώρες. Αντίθετα με την Αργεντινή, τη Γαλλία, την Ινδία και, βέβαια, την Ελλάδα (άλλες ελλειμματικές χώρες), οι ΗΠΑ δεν είχαν ανάγκη να δανείζονται δολάρια για να στηρίζουν τα νομίσματά τους ή να αυξάνουν τα επιτόκιά τους για να ελκύουν δολάρια στην επικράτειά τους. Οι απανταχού καπιταλιστές κατέληξαν να χρηματοδοτούν τους Αμερικανούς καπιταλιστές και ραντιέρηδες, καθώς και την κυβέρνησή τους. Να πως έγινε αυτό:Οι καπιταλιστές πλεονασματικών χωρών, όπως η Γερμανία, η Ιαπωνία και αργότερα η Κίνα, έβλεπαν το αμερικανικό εμπορικό έλλειμμα ως ευεργέτη – ως μια τεράστια ηλεκτρική σκούπα που ρούφαγε τις καθαρές εξαγωγές τους στο αμερικανικό έδαφος. Και τί έκαναν οι Ιάπωνες, Γερμανοί και αργότερα Κινέζοι καπιταλιστές με όλα αυτά τα δολάρια που κέρδιζαν; Τα έστελναν πίσω στις ΗΠΑ όπου αγόραζαν περιουσιακά στοιχεία που τους απέφεραν προσόδους: ακίνητα, ομόλογα, παράγωγα και όποιες εταιρείες τους επέτρεπε η Ουάσιγκτον να αγοράσουν (όχι βέβαια την Boeing ή την Microsoft).Και οι ελλειμματικές χώρες, ιδίως του 3ου Κόσμου – της Ασίας, της Αφρικής και της Λ. Αμερικής; Αυτές συνεχώς δεινοπαθούσαν να δανείζονται δολάρια που τους έλλειπαν (λόγω του εμπορικού τους ελλείμματος) από την Γουόλ Στριτ ώστε και να στηρίζουν τα νομίσματά τους και, βέβαια, να αγοράζουν φάρμακα, ενέργεια και τις πρώτες ύλες που ήταν απαραίτητες στην παραγωγή των εξαγώγιμων εμπορευμάτων με τα οποία κέρδιζαν δολάρια για να αποπληρώνουν την Γουόλ Στριτ. Αναπόφευκτα, ανά περιόδους, αδυνατούσαν να αποπληρώνουν τους τραπεζίτες της Γουόλ Στριτ. Τότε, η Δύση έστελνε τους «δικαστικούς κλητήρες» της – δηλαδή, το ΔΝΤ το οποίο τους δάνειζε τα δολάρια που έλειπαν με αντάλλαγμα γην και ύδωρ, δηλαδή την παράδοση, μέσω ιδιωτικοποίησης, όλης της δημόσιας περιουσίας (αεροδρόμια, λιμάνια, δρόμους, ακίνητα, το σύστημα ύδρευσης και ηλεκτροδότησης, το τηλεφωνικό σύστημα, ακόμα και σχολεία, νοσοκομεία κ.α.) στην ντόπια και ξένη ολιγαρχία η οποία, με την σειρά της, δεν είχε εναλλακτική παρά να στείλει τις προσόδους της από αυτή την περιουσία στην Γουόλ Στριτ.Με άλλα λόγια, οι ΗΠΑ είχαν βρει την μαγική συνταγή που έψαχνε – αλλά δεν έβρισκε – κάθε αυτοκρατορία πριν τις ΗΠΑ: Πως να πείθουν τους πλούσιους των εξαρτημένων (πλούσιων και φτωχών) ηγεμονιών, καθώς και κάθε κεντρική τράπεζα, να χρηματοδοτούν εθελοντικά (χωρίς κανονιοφόρους και πολέμους) την αυτοκρατορία (τόσο το κράτος της όσο και τις εισαγωγές της)!Κινέζος αξιωματούχος μου περιέγραψε όλο αυτό το αμερικανικό επίτευγμα ως την Σκοτεινή Συμφωνία πίσω από την Παγκοσμιοποίηση. Γιατί σκοτεινή; Επειδή θεμελιωνόταν σε μια σιωπηλή, σκοτεινή «τράμπα» μεταξύ της αμερικανικής άρχουσας τάξης και ξένων καπιταλιστών & ραντιέρηδων. Η ιδέα, απλή: Έστω ότι υπήρχε ένα κουμπί που πατώντας το θα καταργούσε την ηγεμονία του δολαρίου και των ΗΠΑ. Ποιος θα έκανε τα πάντα για να μην το πατήσεις; Προφανώς, το αμερικανικό κράτος και η αμερικανική άρχουσα τάξη. Όχι όμως μόνον αυτοί. Πέραν αυτών, μια πανστρατιά μη αμερικανών θα έπεφταν πάνω σου να σε σταματήσουν πριν καν πλησιάσεις το κουμπί: γερμανοί βιομήχανοι, σεΐχηδες από τα Εμιράτα, ευρωπαίοι τραπεζίτες και, ναι, κινέζοι καπιταλιστές.Περιληπτικά, η πρωτοκαθεδρία του δολαρίου εξυπηρετεί εξ ίσου τα συμφέροντα των αμερικανών ραντιέρηδων και τα συμφέροντα γερμανών, αργεντίνων, νιγηριανών, κορεατών και κινέζων καπιταλιστών. Χωρίς το δολάριο και την αμερικανική επικυριαρχία, οι κινέζοι, ιάπωνες, κορεάτες και γερμανοί καπιταλιστές δεν θα είχαν τη δυνατότητα να εξάγουν τεράστιες υπεραξίες από τους εργάτες τους τις οποίες, κατόπιν, «επενδύουν» ως ραντιέρηδες στις ΗΠΑ. Αντίστοιχα, χωρίς το δολάριο και την αμερικανική επικυριαρχία, οι ολιγάρχες της Αργεντινής, της Ελλάδας, της Ρωσίας, της Ουκρανίας, της Ινδίας κλπ δεν θα είχαν τη δυνατότητα να λεηλατούν τη δημόσια περιουσία των χωρών τους και να εξάγουν τα λάφυρα στο Ντέλαγουεαρ και τα Νησιά Κέιμαν ως δολαριοποιημένα περιουσιακά στοιχεία.Το μάθημα για εμάς είναι απλό:Να μην ξανακάνουμε το λάθος να θεωρούμε ότι η σοσιαλιστική, δημοκρατική, απελευθερωτική Νέα Διεθνής Οικονομική Τάξη θα προκύψει επειδή οι ελίτ των χωρών του Νότου θα συγκρουστούν, από κοινού, με την Ουάσιγκτον ή την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση. Το Νέο Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων θα αποτύχει αν στόχος του είναι, απλά, μια συμμαχία των G77 ή των BRICS σε αντιπαράθεση με την Δύση.Δεν πρέπει να προετοιμαζόμαστε μόνο για την αναπόφευκτη σύγκρουση με τους εκπροσώπους της Ουάσιγκτον, του Σίτι του Λονδίνου ή των Βρυξελλών οι οποίοι δουλεύουν ακούραστα έτσι ώστε να μην αλλάξει τίποτα. Πρέπει να προετοιμαστούμε εξ ίσου για σύγκρουση με γραφειοκράτες και εκπρόσωπους τους Παγκόσμιου Νότου, συμπεριλαμβανόμενης και της Κίνας, του οποίου οι καπιταλιστές εκμεταλλεύονται το εμπορικό έλλειμμα των ΗΠΑ για να εκμεταλλεύονται τους δικούς τους ανθρώπους – και, κατόπιν, να στέλνουν τεράστια κομποδέματα δολαρίων στο δίκτυο της Γουόλ Στριτ και του Λονδρέζικου Σίτι.Θέλουμε να είμαστε αυθεντικά διεθνιστές; Τότε δεν πρέπει να λησμονάμε ποιος είναι ο λαός, η εργατική τάξη, που έχει περισσότερα να κερδίσει από την κατάργηση του Αμερικανικού Νέο-ιμπεριαλισμού: η αμερικανική εργατική τάξη που, μετά το 1971, καταδικάστηκαν στον μαρασμό, την απαξίωση, την σωματική εξόντωση και την δομική φτώχια εντός της πιο πλούσιας καπιταλιστικής αυτοκρατορίας.Πράγματι, οφείλουμε να μην ξεχάσουμε ποτέ πως τα θύματα του ιμπεριαλισμού είναι παντού, τόσο στην Περιφέρειά του όσο και στην Μητρόπολή του. Πως η ισχύουσα διεθνής οικονομική τάξη επιβάλει διαφορετικού τύπου μιζέρια στους απανταχού εργαζόμενους.Η Παγκοσμιοποίηση επέβαλε στους αμερικανούς εργαζόμενους τη μιζέρια που φέρνει η αποβιομηχάνιση που φέρνουν οι αποεπενδύσεις – ήταν σαν κομμάτια του φτωχού Νότου να μετανάστευσαν στις βιομηχανικές περιοχές Αμερικής και ΕυρώπηςΗ Παγκοσμιοποίηση επέβαλε στους κινέζους εργαζόμενους στις ραγδαία αναπτυσσόμενες παραλιακές πόλεις να υποφέρουν απάνθρωπες εντάσεις εργασίας που συνυφαίνονται με τις παραγωγικές υπερ-επενδύσεις – ήταν σαν περιοχές του υπερ-αναπτυγμένου Βορρά να μετανάστευσαν στην Κίνα εντός των οποίων ντόπιοι εργάτες έπρεπε να ζουν με μισθούς του υποανάπτυκτου Νότου.Διαφορετικές μιζέριες, ο ίδιος παγκόσμιος μηχανισμός ανακύκλωσης υπεραξιών που εξήχθησαν σε κάθε γωνιά του πλανήτη από την Καπιταλιστική Διεθνή.Ο Νέος Ψυχρός ΠόλεμοςΣήμερα, αυτή η Παγκοσμιοποίηση – που θεμελιώθηκε στην συσσώρευση κινεζικού κεφαλαίου λόγω του αμερικανικού εμπορικού ελλείμματος και την μετατροπή του σε περιουσιακά στοιχεία στις ΗΠΑ – παραχωρεί τη θέση της σ’ ένα νέο Ψυχρό Πόλεμο μεταξύ ΗΠΑ και Κίνας ο οποίος ενισχύει εκθετικά τις απειλές κατά της ζωής στον πλανήτη Γη. Τί κρύβεται πίσω από αυτό τον Νέο Ψυχρό Πόλεμο;Η ραγδαία εκβιομηχάνιση της Κίνας δεν ήταν πρόβλημα για την Ουάσιγκτον όσο η Σκοτεινή Συμφωνία λειτουργούσε – όσο οι κινέζοι καπιταλιστές χρειάζονταν το δολάριο για να μετατρέπουν το εμπορικό έλλειμμα των ΗΠΑ σε εργαλείο εξαγωγής υπεραξίας από τους κινέζους εργαζόμενους, την οποία μετά μετέτρεπαν σε αμερικανικά περιουσιακά στοιχεία.Τι άλλαξε όμως; Δύο πράγματα. Η πρώτη αλλαγή ήταν η ανάδυση ενός νέου τύπου κεφαλαίου. Μια μορφή κεφαλαίου που ζει στο λεγόμενο κλάουντ – στο υπολογιστικό νέφος. Cloud capital ή νεφοκεφάλαιο το ονομάζω. Το «παραδοσιακό» κεφάλαιο, όπως το όρισε ο Καρλ Μαρξ, ορίζεται ως ένα παραχθέν μέσο παραγωγής (π.χ., ατμομηχανές, τρακτέρ, βιομηχανικά ρομπότ, εκτυπωτές 3D). Τί είναι το cloud capital ή νεφοκεφάλαιο; Το ορίζω ως ένα παραχθέν μέσο συμπεριφορικής τροποποίησης . H φιλοδοξία της «συμπεριφορικής τροποποίησης» είναι τόσο αρχαία όσο και η ρητορική, η κατήχηση, η προπαγάνδα ή, πιο πρόσφατα, η διαφήμιση. Όμως, έως ότου μας να μας προκύψει η Big Tech τη δεκαετία του 2020, μόνο άνθρωποι μπορούσαν να επιφέρουν τροποποίηση της συμπεριφοράς άλλων ανθρώπων: ιερείς, προπαγανδιστές, διαφημιστές. Σήμερα, η πιο αποτελεσματική τροποποίηση της συμπεριφοράς μας επιτυγχάνεται από αλγοριθμικές μηχανές που χρησιμοποιούν τεχνητή νοημοσύνη. Όποιος έχει τον έλεγχο αυτού του νεφοκεφαλαίου έχει όλο και μεγαλύτερο τον έλεγχο της διανομής της παγκόσμιας υπεραξίας.Πως σχετίζεται η συσσώρευση νεφοκεφαλαίου με τον Νέο Ψυχρό Πόλεμο; Κατ’ αρχάς, ήταν ο λόγος που, πρώτα, ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ και, κατόπιν, ο Τζο Μπάιντεν στοχοποίησαν την Κίνα. Ας δούμε το γιατί και το πως.Οι ΗΠΑ επικυριαρχούν λόγω της κυριαρχίας τους στο χρηματο-νομισματικο-πιστωτικό σύστημα (δολάριο-Γουόλ Στριτ) και της κυριαρχίας της Σίλικον Βάλεϊ – δηλαδή, κυριαρχούν τόσο επί του χρηματικού κεφαλαίου όσο και επί του νεφοκεφαλαίου. Όμως, η Κίνα απειλεί αυτή την κυριαρχία ως προς και τις δύο αυτές μορφές κεφαλαίου. Μόλις σήμερα, αυτή τη στιγμή που σας μιλώ, η εφαρμογή WeChat – που ανήκει στην Κινεζική Tencent – θα έχει μεταφέρει 38 δις μηνυμάτων μεταξύ χρηστών. Χρήστες που δεν χρειάζεται να βγουν από το WeChat για να κάνουν μεταξύ τους πληρωμές. Την ώρα που κατεβάζουν ταινίες ή ακούν μουσική, με την ίδια εφαρμογή, στέλνουν και δέχονται χρήματα σε οποιονδήποτε τόσο εντός της Κίνας όσο και στα εκατομμύρια μη Κινέζων σε χώρες με εμπορικές συναλλαγές με την Κίνα που έχουν ανοίξει λογαριασμό σε κινεζική τράπεζα.Μια ακόμα ιστορικής σημασίας εξέλιξη ήρθε το 2020 με την δημιουργία του πρώτου κρατικού ψηφιακού νομίσματος από την Κεντρική Τράπεζα της Κίνας. Μαζί, οι κινεζικοί κολοσσοί τύπου Tencent και η Κεντρική Τράπεζα της χώρας έχουν οικοδομήσει ένα ολοκληρωμένο σύστημα πληρωμών και ανταλλαγής δεδομένων. Πρόκειται για την μόνη υπερ-οδό χρήματος και δεδομένων που μπορεί να ανταγωνιστεί το σύμπλεγμα Γουόλ Στριτ, Σίλικον Βάλεϊ και Φεντ (την Αμερικανική Κεντρική Τράπεζα).Έως πρόσφατα, αυτή η κινεζική υπερ-οδός χρησιμοποιείτο σχετικά λίγο, κι όχι από τους πλούσιους της Γης, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των ολιγαρχών του Πούτιν αλλά και των κινέζων καπιταλιστών –  δεν είχαν λόγο να εγκαταλείψουν την αμερικανική υπερ-οδό όπου τα πάντα κινούσε το δολάριο. Όταν όμως ο Πούτιν εισέβαλε στην Ουκρανία, και η Ουάσιγκτον απάντησε κατάσχοντας πάνω από $300 δις της Ρωσικής Κεντρικής Τράπεζας, ξάφνου όλα άλλαξαν. Πανικός κατέβαλε τους μη αμερικανούς πλούσιους – κι όχι μόνο τους Ρώσους – που απέκτησαν ξαφνικό ενδιαφέρον για την κινεζική υπερ-οδό χρήματος και δεδομένων.Να γιατί τον περασμένο Οκτώβριο ο Πρόεδρος Μπάιντεν αποφάσισε να κηρύξει ολοκληρωτικό οικονομικό πόλεμο εναντίον της Κίνας. Το εμπάργκο στα μικροτσίπ ήταν μια κατά μέτωπον επίθεση στην κινεζική Big Tech, με την οποία ο Μπάιντεν  ελπίζει να πληγώσει θανάσιμα το «θεριό» που απειλεί την κυριαρχία της Σίλικον Βάλεϊ και της Γουόλ Στριτ. Τίποτα καλό για την Παγκόσμια Ειρήνη δεν προμηνύεται.Ποτέ δεν έχουμε βρεθεί τόσο κοντά στο πυρηνικό ολοκαύτωμα όσο σήμερα – σύμφωνα με το Ρολόι Ντούμσνταϊ που έφτιαξαν προειδοποιητικά οι πυρηνικοί επιστήμονες την δεκαετία του 40 που σήμερα δείχνει 100 δεύτερα πριν την συμφορά. Κι αυτό χωρίς να λαμβάνεται υπ’ όψη το άλλο ρολόι, εκείνο που μετρά τις ώρες έως ότου η ανθρωπότητα υπερβεί το σημείο μη επιστροφής από την κλιματική καταστροφή. Και τι κάνει η διεθνής άρχουσα τάξη για να αποτρέψει τις δύο αυτές συμφορές; Ό,τι είναι δυνατόν ώστε για να σπρώξει την ανθρωπότητα μια ώρα αρχύτερα στους δύο αυτούς γκρεμούς. Αυτό κάνουν.Για αυτό πρέπει να οικοδομήσουμε το Νέο Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων που θα εργαστεί προς μια Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική Τάξη.Τι σημαίνει να είμαστε αδέσμευτοι;Σε αυτό το σημείο, θα βοηθήσει να ξεκαθαρίσουμε τι σημαίνει να είναι κανείς πολιτικά και ηθικά αδέσμευτος.Δεν σημαίνει να είναι ουδέτερος. Όπως εξηγήσαμε στην «Διακήρυξη της Αθήνας», είμαστε σταθερά στο πλευρό των θυμάτων εισβολής, κατοχής, βίας – είτε πρόκειται για την Παλαιστίνη είτε για την Δ. Σαχάρα, την Υεμένη, την Ουκρανία. Κι είμαστε οι πρώτοι που ασκούμε κριτική όποτε και όπου καταπατούνται οι ελευθερίες και τα δημοκρατικά δικαιώματα. Το νέο μας Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων πρέπει να ανακτήσει την έννοια της ελευθερίας από τους δήθεν φιλελεύθερους και ελευθεριάζοντες – από το Περού, όπου σήμερα οι σύντροφοί μας δολοφονούνται στους δρόμους και τις πλατείες, έως το Ιράν, όπου γενναίες γυναίκες, ακολουθούμενες από γενναίους άνδρες – και άπειρα νέα παιδιά – διαδηλώνουν κάτω από το σύνθημα ΓΥΝΑΙΚΑ-ΖΩΗ-ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ.“Μα ,το καθεστώς του Ιράν», μπορεί να αντιπαραθέσετε «δεν αντιστέκεται στον Αμερικανικό Ιμπεριαλισμό;» Απολύτως. Όμως, μόνο και μόνο επειδή ένα καθεστώς συγκρούεται με τον Αμερικανικό Ιμπεριαλισμό δεν του εξασφαλίζει το δικαίωμα να παραβιάζει τις βασικές ελευθερίες των εκεί συντρόφων μας.Σε αυτό το σημείο θα επιμείνω: Ένα αυθεντικό Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων πρέπει να είναι βαθιά διαλεκτικό – π.χ. να είναι ικανό να υπερασπίζεται το Ιρανικό Κράτος από τις ιμπεριαλιστικές βλέψεις, απειλές και τα εμπάργκο των ΗΠΑ, αλλά ταυτόχρονα να στηρίζει προοδευτικούς ανθρώπους στο Ιράν που και παλεύουν ενάντια στην εγχώρια θεοκρατική ολιγαρχία και δεν πέφτουν θύματα της προπαγάνδας και της πλεκτάνης της CIA και του Πενταγώνου.«Και με την Κίνα, τί κάνουμε;», με ρωτούν. Πως θα πρέπει το Νέο Κίνημα Αδεσμεύτων να αντιμετωπίσει την Κίνα; Με δύο τρόπους, θα πρότεινα:Με σεβασμό, δεδομένου του πραγματικού οικονομικού θαύματος που οφείλεται στον μόχθο και την εφευρετικότητα τόσων ανθρώπων – ένα θαύμα που έχουμε υποχρέωση να υπεραμυνθούμε από τις απειλές του Αμερικανικού Ιμπεριαλισμού και του Νέου Ψυχρού Πολέμου που αυτός εξαπολύει για να διαφυλάξει την επικυριαρχία του. Και ,Με διάθεση κριτικής, όχι μόνο με αναφορά στις βασικές ελευθερίες αλλά και σε όρους της ταξικής πάλης εντός της Κίνας: Ο Πρόεδρος Σι υπόσχεται, καιρό τώρα, ότι θα συγκρουστεί με τους κινέζους ραντιέρηδες και καπιταλιστές υπέρ του εργατικού εισοδήματος ακόμα κι αν αυτό σημαίνει εκμηδενισμό των καθαρών εξαγωγών. Κάτι τέτοιο θα ήταν ευεργετικό για την πλειοψηφία των πολιτών της Κίνας – όπως θα ήταν, για τους λαούς της Αφρικής και Ασίας, ένα κούρεμα του των κινεζικών δανείων στις φτωχότερες χώρες. Και οι δύο κινήσεις θα ήταν βήματα προς την Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική Τάξη που θέλουμε, το άκρως αντίθετο δηλαδή της Σκοτεινής Συμφωνίας υπό την οποία η κινέζικη οικονομία αναπτύσσεται ως τώρα. Έχουμε υποχρέωση να σπρώξουμε το Πεκίνο προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση και να τους ασκούμε δριμεία κριτική όταν αποκλίνουν.Ποια Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική Τάξη θέλουμε;Μιλάμε για Νέα Διεθνή Οικονομική Τάξη. Πως την φανταζόμαστε; Η οποιαδήποτε μετάβαση σε βιώσιμη οικονομική τάξη απαιτεί ένα πλούσιο Ταμείο Πράσινων Επενδύσεων. Ο φίλος Μπρούνο Ροντρίγκεζ Παρίγια, Υπουργός Οικονομικών της Κούβας, σε πρόσφατη συνάντηση εκπροσώπων της G77+Κίνα προσδιόρισε το ποσό μεταξύ $3,3 & $4,5 τρισ. ετησίως. Δική μου εκτίμηση είναι ότι ο,τιδήποτε κάτω των $10 τρις θα αποδειχθεί κατώτερο των περιστάσεων.Είναι εφικτό; Τεχνικά και βέβαια είναι. Φανταστείτε μια αναδιαρθρωμένη Παγκόσμια Τράπεζα, υποστηριζόμενη από παγκόσμια ψηφιακή νομισματική μονάδα έκδοσης ενός αναδιαρθρωμένου ΔΝΤ. Φανταστείτε όλες τις εμπορικές και κεφαλαιακές ροές να τιμολογούνται στη βάση αυτής της μονάδας κι ένα 10% των μονάδων αυτών να διατίθεται στην Πράσινη Μετάβαση, ιδίως στις φτωχότερες, ελλειμματικές, χώρες. Ένας διεθνής Πράσινος Κεϋνσιανισμός, με άλλα λόγια.Όμως, για τους λόγους που μας εξήγησε ο Μιχάλ Καλέτσι πριν πολλές δεκαετίες, ο Κεϋνσιανισμός (οιουδήποτε χρώματος) δεν μπορεί να περπατήσει: Ακόμα κι αν η άρχουσα τάξη πανικοβληθεί και εφαρμόσει Κεϋνσιανές πολιτικές για να σώσει το τομάρι της, τη στιγμή που οι πολιτικές αυτές αρχίσουν να αποδίδουν, και πολύ πριν αποδώσουν ουσιαστικά, η άρχουσα τάξη θα τις εγκαταλείψει επιστρέφοντας σε εκμεταλλευτικές πολιτικές. Είναι την φύση της άρχουσας τάξης να φράζει το δρόμο που οδηγεί ακόμα και στη δική της σωτηρία.Αυτό σημαίνει ένα πράγμα. Η εφαρμογή των απαραίτητων πράσινων Κεϋνσιανών πολιτικών έχει ένα προαπαιτούμενο που θα μισούσε ο Κέυνς: Την κατάργηση της Παγκόσμιας Αυτοκρατορίας του Κεφαλαίου, το οποίο προτιμά να δει την συντέλεια του κόσμου παρά την εφαρμογή πράσινων Κεϋνσιανών που θα απέτρεπαν την συντέλεια του κόσμου.Πως θα το πετύχουμε αυτό; Η επανάστασή μας, για να έχει πιθανότητες επιτυχίας, πρέπει να χρησιμοποιήσει τις τεχνολογίες της Big Tech που μας δίνουν τη δυνατότητα να επικοινωνούμε αλλά και να πλήττουμε την Αυτοκρατορία του Κεφαλαίου – π.χ. η ετήσια καμπάνια της Προοδευτικής Διεθνούς εναντίον της Amazon (#MakeAmazonPay). Δεν είναι όμορφα ειρωνικό πως η Big Tech μας δίνει τη δυνατότητα να συντονιστούμε εναντίον της; Μένει να την χρησιμοποιήσουμε στο πλαίσιο διεθνούς ανατρεπτικού σχεδίου. Μόνο το αδύνατο όνειρο θα μετατραπεί σε προφανές σχέδιο.Τί σημαίνει όμως, στην πράξη, η ανατροπή της Αυτοκρατορίας του Κεφαλαίου; Πως μπορεί η ανθρωπότητα να επανακτήσει τα λεηλατημένα κοινά αγαθά στη στεριά, στις θάλασσες, στον αέρα, ακόμα και στο διάστημα;Με δύο τρόπους: Νομοθετώντας ώστε οι εταιρείες να ανήκουν στους εργαζόμενους σε αυτές, στο πλαίσιο της αρχής «ένας-εργαζόμενος-μια- μετοχή-μια-ψήφος». Και καταργώντας το μονοπώλιο των ιδιωτικών τραπεζών στις χρηματικές συναλλαγές.Τότε, τράπεζες και κέρδος θα εξατμιστούν ως κινητήρια δύναμη των οικονομιών μας καθώς οι τράπεζες θα έχουν χάσει την εξουσία τους και η ιδέα του κέρδους δεν θα βγάζει νόημα όταν οι εργαζόμενοι είναι ισότιμοι ιδιοκτήτες και, συνεπώς, ο διαχωρισμός κέρδους και μισθού καταργείται.Ο ταυτόχρονος θάνατος της αγοράς μετοχών (του Χρηματιστήριου) και της αγοράς εργασίας, μαζί με την αποψίλωση της δύναμης των τραπεζών, θα αναδιανείμει αυτομάτως τον πλούτο, θα καταστήσει εφικτό το βασικό εισόδημα για όλους και, ως ένα λαμπρό υποπροϊόν, θα εξανεμίσει τα κίνητρα πίσω από τους πολέμους.Το τέλος της εξουσίας του κεφαλαίου πάνω στην κοινωνία θα επιτρέψει στις κοινότητές μας να αποφασίζουμε συμμετοχικά για την Υγεία, την Παιδεία αλλά και για τις επενδύσεις μας στην διάσωση του πλανήτη από την μεγέθυνση που θυμίζει ιό ο οποίος αναπαράγεται χωρίς ειρμό ή λογική σκοτώνοντας τον φορέα του.Η αυθεντική δημοκρατία, επί τέλους, θα γίνει εφικτή και θα εφαρμόζεται στις συνελεύσεις πολιτών και εργαζόμενων – όχι πίσω από πόρτες κλειστές όπου συνεδριάζουν μια χούφτα ολιγάρχες.Ο διττός εκδημοκρατισμός κεφαλαίου και χρήματος ακούγεται ως ένα αδύνατο, ουτοπικό όνειρο – όχι όμως πιο ουτοπικό από το να βασιζόμαστε στο σημερινό σύστημα, ή στον Πράσινο Κεϋνσιανισμό, για τη σωτηρία της ανθρωπότητας – κι ούτε πιο αδύνατο ή ουτοπικό απ’ όσο κάποτε φάνταζε το όνειρο μιας κοινωνίας χωρίς δουλεία ή η ιδέα του «ένα-άτομο-μια-ψήφος». Πρακτικά, ο διττός εκδημοκρατισμός κεφαλαίου και χρήματος δεν είναι τίποτα λιγότερο από το προαπαιτούμενο για την επιβίωση του είδους μας – είναι τόσο απλό.Αυτοί είναι οι στόχοι του Νέου Κινήματος Αδεσμεύτων που πρέπει να οικοδομήσουμε. Κι ο απώτερος στόχος;Ο τερματισμός της νομιμοποιημένης λεηλασίας ανθρώπων και Γης που πυροδοτεί την κλιματική καταστροφή.Τίποτα λιγότερο από την ολοκληρωτική κατάργηση της εξουσίας του κεφαλαίου επί των κοινωνιών των ανθρώπων που υποδαυλίζει την αναξιοπρέπεια και καθιστά τον πλανήτη ακατοίκητο για το είδος μας.Φίλες, φίλοι, συνοδοιπόροι, σύντροφοι,Δεν πρόκειται για πρόβα. Ούτε για όνειρο θερινής νυκτός. Αγώνας επιβίωσης του είδους μας είναι. Και, ναι, μπορούμε να τα καταφέρουμε! Μαζί.

The New Non-Aligned Movement and New Economic System we have a duty to work towards – Havana Address, 27th January 2023

The War in Ukraine has sped up the division of the world into two technofeudal fiefdoms – one US dollar denominated and one Chinese yuan denominated. As the world bifurcates, class struggles within each technofeudal fiefdom, as well as between them, generate destructive forces that threaten our species survival – from a New Cold War, to Ukraine-like regional conflicts, to nuclear war and, of course, to the unmitigated climate catastrophe.In this lecture, delivered in Havana on 27th January 2023, I argue that only a New Non-Aligned Movement (that has learned its lessons from the original Non-Aligned Movement’s failure) can put a stop to this downward spiral. But, to do so, it needs to inspire in our peoples with a vision of new, non-exploitative, democratic international economic system. To the lecture’s end, I sketch out the basic elements of such a system (Spoil Alert: Green Keynesianism will not be enough).

Address at the 5th International Conference for World Balance, Havana, Cuba, 27th January 2023

Introduction: A message from AthensFriends, comrades, fellow delegates of the Progressive International,This is, shockingly, my first time in Cuba. For decades, I resisted coming because I did not want to come as a tourist. Cuba is too important for that. I had to reach my sixties to experience the joy of coming to Cuba to work with comrades on what truly matters to Cuba, to the Americas, to Asia, to Africa, to Europe and yes to my long-suffering country, Greece. And what’s that? It is the establishment of a New Non-Aligned Movement (NNAM) with which to break down the existing, exploitative, catastrophically extractive imperialist international economic order so as to build a new one in its place – a New International Economic Order (NIEO) in which people and planet can breathe, live and prosper together.Before getting down to business, I need to pay tribute to this land and its brave people. When our party, MeRA25, put out a press release that I was to come to Havana, something strange happened. A torrent of abuse came from the usual quarters: anti-communists, radical centrists and some leftists who have lost the revolutionary zeal of their youth; who accuse me, and MeRA25, of ‘endangering’ Greece by resisting the powerful oligarchy running our country. But, all these people – however hard they tried – could not hide one thing they had in common: respect for the Cuban people.Walk around Athens today. It looks richer, more ‘developed’ than Havana. But most of our people are walking around dispossessed, humiliated, with their democracy a sham. Why? Because on 5th July 2015 they came ever so close to a revolution, with a brave 62% NO vote to the International Monetary Fund, to the predatory bankers, to the local oligarchy. Alas, that same night, our people were overthrown by their leadership and the revolution was crushed.And yet, even those who have since been pressurised to believe that there was no alternative to surrender – even they look to the people of Cuba with immense respect – even a touch of jealousy. Why? Because the people of Cuba have not surrendered!The ATHENS DECLARATION: The beginning of a New Non-Aligned Movement to struggle for a New International Economic OrderSpeaking of Athens, on 13th May 2022 our party, in association with the Progressive International represented by myself, Jeremy Corbyn and Ece Temelcuran, issued the ATHENS DECLARATION. The ATHENS DECLARATION was our response to the hideous war in Ukraine against the background of unprecedented warmongering. It was also the first call for a New Non-Aligned Movement. Allow me to read some extracts:We stand with every people suffering invasion, displacement and aggression.We demand an immediate ceasefire in every conflict, the withdrawal of occupying forces and a comprehensive Peace under the auspices of the United Nations.We oppose the division of the world in competing blocs that invest in rampant militarism, hyper-modern weapons of mass destruction and a New Cold WarWe believe that lasting peace can be achieved only by replacing all military blocs with an inclusive international security framework that de-escalates tensions, expands freedoms, fights poverty, limits exploitation, pursues social and environmental justice and terminates the domination of one country by another.With these thoughts in mind, we call upon democrats across the world to join forces in a New Non-Aligned Movement… as a route to lasting peace and… globally shared prosperity.And there you have it: Fifty years after the original Non-Aligned Movement’s campaign for the creation of a New International Economic Order, we are at it again. First in Athens, today in Havana. Thankfully, we don’t need to write new speeches. Just remind the world of what Fidel told the United Nations Assembly in October 1979:That “the din of weapons, threatening language, and arrogance on the international scene must cease.”That “bombs can kill the starving, the diseased and the ignorant but they cannot kill hunger, diseases or ignorance.”That “the international monetary system predominating today is bankrupt. And it must be replaced!”Now, let us not be depressed that we are back at square one. That we need to repeat the same speeches and wage the same campaigns. Remember: Every generation is condemned to fight the same fight! Again. And again. And again. With greater focus every time. And always by learning from the previous generation’s mistakes.So, as we are re-starting the process of building a New Non-Aligned Movement to forge a New International Economic Order, we must ask ourselves: Why did we lose last time round? Why were we so comprehensively defeated in the 1980s and 1990s? Why did the original Non-Aligned Movement fall prey to Neoimperialism’s highest form: Financialised Capitalist Globalisation?The essence of Globalisation and the cause of Neoimperialism’s victoryThe short answer is: Because capitalists proved, in practice, better internationalists than we were. Because they understood better the global class war and, thus, won it.What did they understand better than us? The new, audacious imperialism that was born when Bretton Woods died in 1971 and the US dollar was no longer convertible into US gold – prompting Nixon to inform foreign capitalists and governments alike that the dollar was, now, their problem.Nixon was right. As the US trade deficit skyrocketed, the world was flooded with dollars which central banks outside the US had no alternative but to use (instead of gold) as reserves to back the value of their currency. The dollar thus began to resemble an… IOU. Before long, the global financial system was backed by IOUs issued by the US hegemon who could decide what the foreign IOU-holders could do with their IOUs – and what they were not allowed to do with them.America was now a deficit country but unlike any other deficit country. Unlike Argentina, France, Greece or India, America did not need to borrow dollars to shore up its currency or to raise interest rates domestically to stop money outflows. Every capitalist on Earth soon ended up financing American rentiers and capitalists. Here is how:Capitalists in surplus countries like Japan, Germany and later China saw America’s trade deficit as a saviour – as a huge vacuum cleaner that sucked their net exports into the United States. And what did the Japanese, German and later Chinese capitalists do with all their dollars? They sent them back to the United States to buy property yielding them rents: real estate, US government bonds, and the few companies that Washington allowed them to own.As for the deficit countries in the Global South – in Asia, Africa and Latin America –, they constantly agonised over a shortage of dollars, which they had to borrow from Wall Street to import medicines, energy and the raw materials necessary to produce their own exports for earning the dollars they needed to repay Wall Street. Inevitably, every now and then, the Global South deficit nations ran out of dollars and could not repay their Wall Street bankers. Then, the West would send its bailiffs in – the International Monetary Fund that would lend the missing dollars on condition that the debtor government handed over the country’s land, water, ports, airports, electricity and telephone networks, even its schools and hospitals, to the local oligarchs who would, once in control of these companies and assets, have no alternative but to channel their earnings into… Wall Street.Washington had, in other words, found the magic formula every previous empire had only dreamed of: How to persuade wealthy foreigners, from countries rich and poor, as well as every foreign central bank, voluntarily, without sending in the navy or the army, to finance the Empire’s government and its imports!A Chinese official once described this to me as the Dark Deal behind globalisation. Why dark? Because it was founded on a dark, unspoken, implicit pact between America’s ruling class and foreign capitalists and rentiers. Let me put it differently: Suppose you could end US hegemony by pressing a button. Who would want to stop you from pressing it? Besides US authorities, the US military, Wall Street, American rentiers, capitalists, etc., a crowd of non-Americans would jump on you to prevent you from pressing the button: German industrialists, Saudi sheikhs, European bankers and, yes, Chinese capitalists.In short, the dollar’s supremacy has been just as functional to the interests of US rentiers as it was to German, Argentinian, Nigerian, Korean and Chinese capitalists. Without the dollar’s and America’s global dominance, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or German capitalists would not have been able continually to extract colossal surplus value from their workers and then stash it away in America’s rentier economy. And Argentinian, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian and Indian oligarchs would not be able to loot their countries’ public assets and take the loot abroad to stash it away in some dollar asset in Delaware or the Cayman Islands.The lesson for us is simple: We must not repeat the mistake of thinking that a New International Economic Order will be built because the elites of the Global South, or of countries in deficit, will band together to confront Washington or the European Union.Our New Non-Aligned Movement will fail if we give it a narrow role of bringing together the G77 and the BRICS in opposition to the West. We need to beware not only the functionaries in Washington or London or Brussels, who work tirelessly so that nothing changes, but also government officials in the pocket of capitalists in the Global South, including China, who use the US trade deficit to exploit their people, their country, and then stash their dollarised surplus value within the circuits of Wall Street and the City of London.Do we want to be true internationalists? Then let’s nowtforget who are one people with probably the most to gain from the abolition of American neocolonialism: Working class Americans who, decades ago, were condemned to ‘deaths of despair’ in sorry rustbelts. Yes, let us never forget that imperialism’s victims are both in the Colonies and in the Metropolis. That the current international economic order inflicts different types of misery on workers everywhere.Globalisation forced American workers into an immiseration brought on by underinvestment and de-industrialisation – it was as if parts of the underdeveloped Global South were migrating into America’s and Europe’s industrial heartlands.Globalisation forced Chinese workers in China’s fast-industrialising coastal cities, to suffer the frenzied exploitation associated with overinvestment – it was as if parts of the Global North, fattened by overinvestment, were migrating into Chinese urban centres where local workers struggled to survive on Global South wages and social benefits.Different miseries, same global recycling of values extracted locally by the Capitalist International.The New Cold WarToday, this same globalisation – which turned on US deficits feeding Chinese capital which then financed American rentiers – is being replaced by a New Cold War between the US and China that poses an imminent threat upon life on Earth. What’s behind this New Cold War?China’s frenzied industrialisation was not a problem for Washington as long as the Dark Deal was operational – as long as Chinese capitalists needed the dollar to turn the US trade deficit into an instrument for extracting surplus value from Chinese workers and then stashing it in American assets.So, what changed? Two things. The first change was the emergence of a new type of capital – cloud capital I call it. Capital, as Karl Marx defined it, is a produced means of production ; e.g., from steam engines and tractors to today’s industrial robots and 3D printers. What’s cloud capital? It is an Internet-based, or cloud-based, produced means of behaviour modification .Behaviour modification is as old as rhetoric, preaching and advertising. But, until the rise of Big Tech only humans could modify people’s behaviour: priests, orators, advertisers. Today, it is machines – using AI – that are modifying behaviour. Who controls cloud capital increasingly grabs the world’s surplus value!How does the rise of cloud capital explain the New Cold War? Well, it is the reason Donald Trump, first, and, now, Joe Biden, targeted China. Let’s see why.America dominates the world by dominating finance, through Wall Street and the dollar; and now by dominating cloud capital, through Silicon Valley. But, China threatens America’s dominance in both fields: money and cloud capital. Only today, WeChat, the mobile messaging app belonging to China’s Tencent, will have transmitted 38 billion messages. Its users do not have to exit the WeChat app to make a payment. While streaming music or a TV series on their WeChat app, they use the same app to send money to anyone in China, but also to millions outside of China who had downloaded WeChat and had opened a yuan account with any number of China’s banks.Now, consider the other development of great significance: the roll out of the first state digital currency issued by the People’s Bank of China. In brief, China’s conglomerates and central bank now have in place an integrated payments and data-exchange system. The only superhighway for money and data that can compete with that of Wall Street, the Federal Reserve and Silicon Valley.Until recently, this Chinese superhighway was mostly unused. Everyone, including Putin’s favourite oligarchs, and China’s capitalists, preferred the tried and tested US superhighway for their dollars. But then Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine and the US retaliated by confiscating at least $300 billion of Russian central bank’s money. Suddenly, there was panic amongst the non-American wealthy and a rush of monies – not just Russian – eager to use the Chinese cloud capital-based superhighway for payments, contracts, data etc.This is why President Biden declared total economic war against China last October. His microchip embargo was a shock-and-awe strike aimed at Chinese Big Tech, with which Biden hopes to wound it critically before it can grow into a fully-fledged beast able to withstand, even to defeat, the combined forces of Silicon Valley and Wall Street. Nothing good for World Peace will result from this my friends.We have never been closer to a nuclear holocaust than today – the Doomsday Clock nuclear scientists invented in the 1940s to warn us is, now, a mere 100 seconds away from disaster. And that’s without looking at that other Clock counting down to the moment humanity will have passed the point of no return from climate catastrophe. What is the global ruling class doing to avert these twin calamities? Their best to push humanity over both cliffs at once! That’s what they are doing. And that’s why we need a New Non-Aligned Movement to push for a New International Economic Order.What does Non-Alignment mean?At this point, it helps to clarify what it means to be politically and ethically Non-Aligned.It does not mean to be neutral. As we stated in the Athens Declaration, we are steadfastly on the side of the invaded, of the victim of aggression – whether in Palestine, Yemen, Western Sahara or, indeed, Ukraine. But, at the same time, we must be the first to criticise abuses of freedoms and democratic rights wherever these take place. Our New Non-Aligned Movement must reclaim freedom from the so-called liberals and libertarians – from Peru today, where are comrades are shot dead, to Iran, where brave women are leading brave men under the banner WOMAN-LIFE-FREEDOM.But, you may object, is Iran’s regime not resisting US imperialism? Absolutely. However, just because a regime is at loggerheads with US imperialism should not give it a free pass to violate the basic freedoms of our comrades in that country.My point is that a truly Non-Aligned Movement must be dialectical – we must be able to defend the State of Iran from US military threats and economic embargoes but, at once, to support the progressives in Iran that are simultaneously resisting the regime’s corrupt theocracy and the local agents of the CIA and the State Department.“What about China?”, you may well ask. How should the New Non-Aligned Movement approach the China question. In two ways, I would suggest:Respectfully, in view of the economic miracle performed by the Chinese people, whose achievements we must defend against the encroachments of US imperialism and the New Cold War. And,Critically, not only in relation to basic freedoms but also in class struggle terms: President Xi has been promising to clash with China’s rentiers and capitalists to boost workers incomes even at the expense of the country’s net exports. This would be good for the majority of the Chinese people and a step toward a New International Economic Order, one very different to the Dark Deal under which China’s economy has been growing so far. As would a Chinese commitment to forgive hight-interest debt incurred by developing countries. We need to encourage Beijing to move in that direction and to issue criticisms when they stray.What New International Economic Order do we seek?Turning to what the New International Economic, how exactly do we envisage it? Any transition to a sustainable economic order will require a large Green Investment Fund. Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s Foreign Minister, in a recent G77+China meeting, put the necessary figure to between $3.3 and $4.5 trillion annually. I say that nothing short of $10 trillion will do.Can this be done? Technically, of course it can. Imagine a re-purposed World Bank, backed by a digital currency issued by a re-purposed International Monetary Fund in which all capital and trade flows are denominated, investing 10% of global income into the Green Transition, especially in the developing world. A global Green Keynesianism.However, Green Keynesianism cannot work for the reasons Michal Kalecki gave decades ago: Because, even if the bourgeoisie panics and adopts Keynesian policies to save its skin, the moment these policies begin to bear fruit, and well before they do their job, the ruling classes will abandon them in favour of their usual extractive policies. It is in the capitalist class’s nature to block the very road that leads to its own salvation.Which means only one thing: To implement the necessary Green Keynesian policies we must first do something Keynes would hate: Dismantle the Global Empire of Capital which prefers to see the end of the world than the implementation of the Green Keynesian policies which may avert collective disaster.How do we do that? Our revolution must use the technology that Big Tech is developing now and which can provide us with the means to communicate, to cooperate and to strike blows at the Empire of Capital far and wide – to give an early example, I mention the Progressive International’s annual MakeAmazonPay campaign. Isn’t it deliciously ironic that Big Tech has robbed capital of the ability to divide us forever? All we need do is use it to come together and turn the impossible dream into an obvious plan.But what does it mean in practice to topple the Empire of Capital? How can humanity reclaim its plundered commons, on land, in the oceans, in the air and soon in outer space?In two ways: By legislating so that corporations belong to those who work in them on the basis of one-employee-one-share-one-vote. And by denying banks the monopoly over people’s transactions.Banks and profit will then wither as our economies’ driving forces because the banks will be defanged and the distinction between profit and wages will no longer make sense: everyone would be an equal shareholder in the companies they work.The simultaneous death of the market for shares and of the labour market, along with the defanging of banks, will automatically re-distribute wealth, make it possible to offer a basic income to everyone, and, as a magnificent byproduct, remove the incentives to wage war.The end of capital’s power over society will allow communities collectively to decide health provision, education and investment in saving the environment from our virus-like growth.Genuine democracy will at last be possible, to be practised in the citizens’ and the workers’ assemblies; not behind closed doors were secretive oligarchs gather.This twin democratisation, of capital and of money, sounds like an impossible dream – but not more impossible than the ideas of one-person-one-vote or of ending the divine rights of Kings once sounded.This twin democratisation is nothing short of the precondition for our species’ survival – it is that simple.Those are the tasks of the New Non-Aligned Movement we must now build. Its ultimate purpose? To end the legalised robbery of people and Earth fuelling climate catastrophe. Nothing less than the total vanquishing of capital’s authority over human societies can end depravity and save the planet.Friends, comrades,This is not a drill. And, no, this is not a pipe dream. We can pull it off! Together.
