5 Ways to Beat a Monday Slump

I don’t know about you, but sometimes it’s hard for me to get going on a Monday. Even though I work on the weekends, it’s not as structured as during the week because the kids aren’t in school and we’re running all over the place. So for me, weekends are usually more exhausting than workweeks.

I know you moms out there feel me on that!

Holla!

So after I kick the kids out the door to school, have sucked down my 4th cup of coffee, and still don’t feel like doing anything except watching my downloaded episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta, I have a few tricks that can get me going.

5 Ways to Beat a Monday Slump

Pre-planning. This is actually something I do on Sundays. I find it’s that much harder to get going on Mondays if I haven’t planned out my week/day. Being able to open my planner (yes I do still love old fashioned paper and pen) and have the tasks that need to be done staring me in the face takes the guesswork out of things and I can dive right in.Do something fun. I am normally an advocate of Eat that Frog by Brian Tracy, which talks about doing that big, important, challenging and maybe undesirable task first. Get it out of the way so you no longer have to worry about it. However, if I’m having a hard time motivating myself I will do one of the easier, more fun tasks just to get into the work groove.Don’t work. If I’m feeling especially sluggish I’ll go to yoga or for a run. Something to get my body going and my blood flowing. Then I come back and work. I can make up the work time I missed later and I find I’m much more productive.Chat with a friend. I know this might sound like goofing off, but having a peer whom you can call/text/email/Facebook/ tweet (you get it) and say “HELP! I need some mojo,” can get your butt in gear. Share your goals for the day and tell them to check in on you periodically and make sure you’re not napping. If all else fails just take a nap. The work will still be waiting when you get up. Ok, I realize this tip probably isn’t all that helpful but sometimes a girl’s gotta do what she’s gotta do.

What do you do to get yourself going on Mondays?

Are You an Amateur or a Pro?

If you’ve never heard of an author by the name of Steven Pressfield you’re missing out and totally, need to go look him up. He’s a very prolific author who is probably best known for The Legend of Bagger Vance. I knew of him but really got to know him when I watch a Marie Forleo video that talked about him and his book Turning Pro (you can watch that video here…it’s awesome, she’s awesome).

Turning Pro was a game changer for me. It talks about the difference in being an amateur and a pro as an entrepreneur which in my case is as an author/blogger. It discusses how entrepreneurs can easily find excuses as to why they aren’t following their true passion by ‘hiding’ behind what’s safe (and I am paraphrasing here). Which I hate to admit I’ve done. It took me years before I could confidently say I was an author and blogger to that common question, “what do you do for a living?”

It can be so difficult to take that leap of faith in your abilities. I say that because when you have a job, presumably the person who hired you thought you would be good at it, or they wouldn’t have hired you. When you’re earning an income from your own hustle, it’s YOU who has to think you are good at something, and that is a lot harder to swallow.

Pressfield gives a ton of great advice, but there were a few things that really called out to me that I wanted to share with you all.

Are You an Amateur or a Pro?

A PRO shows up every day.

How many times have you pushed off sitting down to write because you didn’t feel “in the mood,” or something else came up and it was easy to ignore the work? You need to set boundaries for yourself and often your family. Working from home tends to make kids (and significant others) think that you have all this freedom, and you don’t. Well not if you actually want to get something done.

A PRO is committed over the long haul, and PRO endures adversity.

There are very few get rich quick and stay rich without hard work schemes in this world. Bring a writer is no exception. As with all businesses, there are ebbs and flows. Anyone who jumped on the ebook bandwagon in 2008/2009 knows that most authors had great sales that were relativity (compared to now) easy to get. As more people entered the market, it became more and more difficult to make the same money.

My book sales peaked in 2013 and then going into 2013 there was a lot of competition and I was struggling to figure out what marketing would work because the old marketing certainly wasn’t. I had a slow decline over 2013/2014 and then depressed and wanting to give up I didn’t put my best effort forward in 2015 until towards the end of the year when I realized I wanted to hold onto this career. I didn’t want to give it up so I needed to do something.

Slow and steady wins the race isn’t just a cliche. It’s true.

A PRO plays it as it lays.

Sometimes, as we all know, just showing up is half the battle. I think that almost every day at boot camp. Not every day is rainbows and marshmallows. Even when you love what you’re doing. We all have bad days, but the key is still punching that imaginary clock, sitting your butt down, and doing what you need to do.

I know what I want to do with my life and where I want to go. It’s just not always the easiest path and so figuring out how to show up everyday/all day for what I want is my ongoing goal. I don’t want to ever look back and say “if only.”

Be honest and ask yourself if you are giving 100% effort every day to your business, whatever that might be. If you’re not ( and I’m not there EVERYDAY either so don’t feel bad), think about what you can do to get closer to that goal because you’ve got what it takes to get there, we all do. It just sometimes takes a little push. One that as your friend I’d totally love to give you.

5 Tips to Spark Your Writing Creativity

Ideas, ideas, where are you?

Do you ever find yourself running out of books ideas to fuel your self-publishing career? Staring at a blank page and hoping the ideas will flow. Except they don’t, and you sit there. You spend all your time on Facebook or binge watching a Netflix series while mindlessly eating?

Yep, me too!

Don’t get me wrong, Being an author is the best job in the world. A job where you get to make things up and people actually pay for it.

AWESOME!

5 Tips to Spark Your Writing Creativity

But with that awesomeness also comes a lot of pressure. As much fun as it is to make up stories I know I don’t always have a constant stream of new and exciting things to write every day when I sit down at my laptop.

Being creative is hard. #thestruggleisreal

When I’m completely stuck and get frustrated by my lack of ideas, there are a few things I’ve learned can help.

People watch

You’re an author, so my guess is you already do this. You’ve told your close family and friends that nothing they do is off limits. But now I want you to go out and PURPOSEFULLY do it. I find a lot in the everyday world I can use as in my stories.

The saying that life is stranger than fiction is 100% true. I mean look at some of the crazy things people post on Facebook. When you watch people, you don’t have to hear their conversation. You can pretend who they are and what they’re doing. They’re giving you the start. The person and the place. So your imagination only has to do a portion of the work. Take a friend with you to people watch and together makeup what they are chatting about or doing. Trust me it’s a fun cheap date!

Get a coffee, tea, hot chocolate whatever moves you.

I go grab a latte at Starbucks. Not only do I love lattes, and happiness in a cup can spark creativity, the people watching is what is most helpful. Back to number 1 on my list. Besides the people watching it’s relaxing to me to partake in a routine that I enjoy. Takes my mind off my writers block and lessens my frustration.

Go for some exercise.

This may sound like a funny one, but I come up with more ideas at yoga, out for a run, and in the shower than anywhere. None of those actives are very conducive to taking notes and I admit I sometimes forget these great ideas by the time I finish. But when I’m working out my mind is less cluttered by all the small things that creep in and the ideas start flowing. Plus exercise is good for you. Win, win.

Read something. Anything.

Writers must read, read, read. Think of it as professional development. When I’m stuck, I try and read something that is far off from what I’m trying to write. To clear my mind of any preconceived thoughts and focus on something else. Read outside of your genre. Read things you don’t like and that are the opposite of what you are trying to write. You’d be amazed at how it will stretch your brain in ways you never thought of.

Write something ELSE.

Work on another project. Write for fun or write in a journal. Get as far away from the writing that has you stumped. Obsessing over being stuck just makes it worse. Moving on, temporarily, and thinking about something else can help you think of that idea you’re looking for. The action of doing something besides staring at the keyboard can be motivating.

Take a nap.

If all else fails, take a nap and forget about it. Seriously! I’ve found that if I take a nap and think about my story while falling asleep can often cause me to wake up with ideas. And if it doesn’t at least I had a nap.

How do you get your creative juices flowing?

Are You Working ON Your Business?

I took a business course years ago, and one thing that stuck with me is he talked about Working ON Your Business not just IN Your business.

As a solopreneur, it’s so easy to get sucked into the day-to-day activities of your business. You’re constantly hustling to get everything done in the mere 24 hours in the day.

If only we didn’t need sleep.

But you sometimes have to pull back and look at what’s going on in your business from a high level. To see what’s working and what’s not. Then make adjustments where you need to. When you’re too deep in it, it can be hard to see the forest for the trees as they say.

Are You Working ON Your Business?

I know what you might be thinking. I have so much to do every day I don’t have time to stop and analyze. If I do that I’ll get behind on Tweeting and Pinning and Instagramming (oh my).

Well, you can’t afford not to. What if what you’re spending all your time doing isn’t that effective. You’re so deep in the trenches of doing the tasks you aren’t even noticing they aren’t effective. You could be missing out on traffic, sales, and opportunities. You owe it to yourself and your business to take that time, put your CEO hat on, and look at your data.

The first thing you need to analyze in your business is your key performance indicators. Your key performance indicators (KPI’s) are those things you measure that indicate your success as a business. As an author/blogger that has a lot to do with social follows, email sign-ups, traffic, sales. You get where I’m going.

If you don’t have those metrics, or if they’re in your head and not on paper in the form of a business plan (hint hint you should have one if you’re serious about making a living at this) then that’s your step one. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t know exactly what you want to achieve with your writing.

You also want to break those metrics down. If your 5-year plan is to make a million dollars, then break it down to what that looks like this month and next (and so on). You also need to know what actions will get you to your intended results and how those actions translate into dollars.

For example:

Does spending an hour a day on Twitter gain you anything that directly relates back to your revenue goal? What blog posts give you the best ROI on email sign ups? What book ad service gives you the best bump for your money?

See where I’m going with this?

I look at my business once a week (usually Saturday or Sunday) and analyze the previous week. I can look for trends and get an understanding of why things are happening (or not). It doesn’t take me long to look up the data and then I usually spend about an hour analyzing the numbers and making a determination of some sort. This information then allows me to better plan what I need to do going forward.

I will caution you about not making reactions to data too quickly. You often need to give certain promotions a little time to see if they’re working. They might need to gain traction. There’s no rule for how long you should let something ride out before you determine it a dud and only you can determine what means success to you. We all have different goals so comparing your stats to someone else isn’t a good idea.

I am a firm believer in slow, incremental goals is the most effective long-term. I love this article on the aggregation of marginal gains. I recommend you read it. If you don’t feel like it the short version is about the British cycling team and how no British cyclist had ever won the Tour de France. The coach vowed to change that.

Brailsford believed in a concept that he referred to as the “aggregation of marginal gains.” He explained it as “the 1 percent margin for improvement in everything you do.” His belief was that if you improved every area related to cycling by just 1 percent, then those small gains would add up to remarkable improvement.

They won it in 3 short years.

You too can win by finding those small incremental gains. But not if you don’t look at your business to find out where those gains can be gotten.

So what are you waiting for?

Put on your calendar today a time when you will work ON your business and make it a new habit.

Beating Overwhelm

Beating overwhelm isn’t easy.

Sometimes when I look at my to-do list, I want to go back to bed and hide under the covers. I want someone to take me away from the never-ending things that need doing. Or do them for me.

A fairy godmother would work. Is that too much to ask for?

In the last few years, life has become busier and busier. Honestly, I don’t even understand how it’s possible to get any busier, but it seems to happen. I blame it on my kids. I used to think when they were small and less independent they took up all my time, and while I didn’t want to rush them in growing up, I was looking forward to when they were more grown and needed me less.

Beating Overwhelm

Except now at 11 and 16 they seem to need me way more. In a different way. Before you think I’m complaining about these wonderful children, I’m not. Well, maybe a little. But I do cherish these times. I know they won’t last forever and I need to take advantage when I can.

Lucky for me I have a job that is flexible. Though that is often why I struggle to keep up. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have good boundaries when it comes to my kids.

Especially, because I want to DO IT ALL! I feel if I think hard enough then a solution will magically appear allowing me to be 3 places at once while working on my next book.

So far it hasn’t.

I know we all have our moments where we want to pull our hair out and think there’s no way to get it all done. While sometimes that’s true usually where there is a will there’s a way. It’s about prioritization and focus.

And learning how to say NO!

I find that saying NO is the hardest thing most of us do. Or don’t do.

But to take charge of your life, you have to learn to say no. You can’t let life overwhelm you to the point where you shut down and say screw it and pour a glass of wine (and no I’ve never done that – hahaha).

Then life owns you and you want to own your life.

The trick is combating overwhelm is to take one thing at a time. Not spend your time spinning in circles because you’re thinking about all 50 things you must get done. Ensuring you won’t get a damn thing done.

The one thing that’s become more apparent to me in the last couple years is there are many things that can make life crazy and unsettled besides work. I used to think people who said they were stressed out if their house wasn’t in order were nuts and borderline OCD but I completely understand now what they mean.

I think I can block out my messy house and unorganized life but in reality, I can’t. If only the cleaning fairies would come while I’m asleep. They must be partying with the fairy godmothers of to-do lists because I never see any of them.

I mention the messy house things because it’s visual. If you can see a mess and feel you don’t have time to clean it stresses you out.

When your to-do list reaches epic proportions, and you can see it start at you, taunting you, challenging you, it can often cause you to be paralyzed by fear and do nothing.

Which just makes it worse.

I’ve finally realized that to keep up on my busy life; I need to stop making it so busy. I’m the one who needs to take control and not take on too much.

What a novel concept.

Yes, there are a lot of things I need to do that can’t be avoided, but there are also things I can learn to say no to.

Some questions I ask myself if I’m waffling on a task on whether I should take it on or not.

1. Does it fit into my short term or long term goals?
2. Is doing it going to make me happy?
3. What’s going to happen if I don’t do it?
4. Does it impact others?

If the answers to 1 & 2 are a yes then my first inclinations to say no. Unless there’s going to be repercussions in the answers to 3 & 4. Not everything is all about me (though it should be, right).

Take the time to think through a decision and how it will fit into your life or disrupt it. Weigh the pros and cons and make your decision.

How do you keep yourself from taking on too much?

It’s Never Too Late to Pursue Your Dreams!

You’re NOT too old to pursue your dreams!

I’m in my 40’s, and while I sometimes feel my age physically, mentally, it’s a different story. Every day I think of new things I want to do and try and explore. I don’t mind getting older. Each new age brings new experiences but I hate knowing I will not have enough time on this earth to do everything I want to do. I’d have to live to be 200 for that to happen and maybe not even then.

I’ve always felt that age was just a number. I’ve been blogging and writing for 10 years, and in many ways, I feel I’m just now hitting my stride. I’m just NOW understanding what it is I want to do with my life and career. I was chatting with an acquaintance the other day, who is my age. She said she wanted to start a blog but felt she was too old. I was dumbfounded at her comment.

I mean I’ve had my moments where I’ve wished I was younger (or thinner or prettier or smarter). But never has there been something I wanted to do where age stopped me. Where age was the ONLY reason for not pursuing whatever it was, I wanted to do. I felt so bad for her. No one should think they are too old to start something. Because the truth of the matter is we are never too old to try.

Of course, there is more to lose if the thing you want to start requires you to quit your job and completely change your lifestyle. Most of us in this age bracket have families and mortgages, but it certainly doesn’t mean it can’t be done. You might have to be more creative in how you go about it. That’s where experience can be a bonus.

When I asked my friend why she felt she was too old to start a blog she told me that it seemed like most the bloggers out there were under 30 (clearly she considers me young – haha).

It's Never Too Late to Pursue Your Dreams!

The fact is there are a lot of young bloggers out there, and I love it. It makes me proud as a woman to see young women who are starting their life and writing about their experiences. Life has changed so much in twenty years it’s fun to read their perspective. But there are plenty of bloggers out there over 40. Over 50. Even over 60. Probably over 70.

What I told my friend is bloggers don’t have an expiration date. That’s one of the awesome things about blogging. The whole point of blogging is to share your knowledge, your opinion, your expertise on whatever it is you chose to chat about. Regardless of age or background, we ALL have things to share that will be of value to someone else. We all have different perspectives and age alone brings a different perspective to things.

Whether you want to start a blog, a business, write a book, change careers, or travel the world, you should never let age stop you. Age is a wonderful thing and something that should be celebrated. It gives us more experience, more wisdom, more confidence. More freedom to be who we were out on earth to be and live life with no regrets.

It does not / should not prevent us from realizing our full potential. It should never stop us from pursuing our dreams.

I challenge you never to let age stand in your way of anything you want to do. You are fabulous at every stage of life.

3 Ways To Stay More Focused

Are you always focused on the task at hand?

I definitely have shiny object syndrome. I blame the Internet and social media. It’s so easy to think you’re going to check Facebook for just a minute and 3 hours later….

I know you all know EXACTLY what I’m getting at!

I do have discipline and I am good at planning but there are a kazillion things that can get me off track.

3 Ways To Stay More Focused

One of my biggest problems is I tend to take on too much. I also tend to overthink things and spend too much time planning and thinking instead of doing. I know that’s just a form of procrastination even though I like to I pretend I’m really doing this high-level business planning like the entrepreneur I am.

Fooling myself isn’t as hard as you might think. In fact, it’s downright easy. I’ve got skillz, what can I say.

So it’s important to actively refocus on my goals from time to time. To stay on track and work the plan.

There are several ways to refocus your energies. The key is to find what works for you.

My top 3 strategies are:

Remind yourself of the bigger picture. That the small task you need to do today is important because it’s part of your big goal. If you don’t get it done you might not achieve that goal.Shut out all outside influences. Your phone, social media, email, your kids (just kidding, sort of) and set a timer where you will just work on the specific thing in front of you. Once you’ve put in your time THEN do all the fun things like check Facebook and play with the kids.Sometimes I long for the days where we had phones tethered to the wall and fax machines. It’s so easy to become a slave to email and it totally jacks with your productivity if you’re checking it every 5 minutes and then acting on things. You should set aside scheduled times to check, sort, and respond to email. Don’t let it take over your life.

Focus and discipline are important to success and while it’s fun to go down the rabbit hole sometimes it won’t get me to where I want to go.

What are your go-to strategies for staying focused?

How To Do Anything in 15 Minutes

Getting more done in less time.

I subscribe to the theory that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”

Called Parkinson’s Law, as coined in 1955 by Cyril Northcote Parkinson. He was a British Naval Officer, and his point was to make satirical comments about public administration and bureaucracy. I heard it years ago in a management class when my professor was discussing time management, and I thought it was so true.

How many times have you put off a task you had 2 weeks to complete until the last minute, and it only took you 20 minutes to actually do?

How To Do Anything in 15 Minutes

It’s also the same principle behind what my mom used to say about it only takes a married man 15 years and 15 minutes to do something. Anyone who has cohabited with their significant other knows this is also the truth.

I have proved this theory time and time again because I happen to be a master at procrastination. I mean probably the best procrastinator ever.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve waited to the last minute on a project I’ve had weeks to work on and even amaze myself at how quickly I knocked it out when I was scrambling 10 minutes before the deadline to finish.

All the while berating myself because the biggest issue with procrastination is the stress it brings. Worried you won’t be able to finish in time or God forbid there is an unanticipated problem that crops up.

I try not to be a procrastinator, and I do well about 80% of the time. I block schedule my calendar and allow myself enough time but not too much time to complete a task. I also try not to waste time doing busy work or meaningless work like surfing Facebook under the guise of curating content.

The key to getting more done in less time is being able to accurate project how much time a task will take and your level of focus on the task at hand.

Start by writing down all you need to get done if you don’t already have a running list. Preferably this list should all be in the same place not on 25 sticky notes and scraps of paper all over the place. I use Trello (a free project manager software that is awesome) and a notebook. I should just use Trello, but I can’t get past the act of writing things down physically. It makes me feel better.

After you’ve written down your list of stuff to do go back through and write down all the parts to each task. Once I started doing this, it made me much more efficient. I would have a task like schedule social media for the week. Well, looking at it, you’d think that won’t take long. Except the task included figuring out what to post, making the graphics, and THEN the actual scheduling. On 5 different platforms.

Once I started to break it down my life went much smoother, and I am much more efficient because I can batch task. If you don’t know what batch tasking is you can read my post here, but the gist is it’s grouping similar tasks together, so you aren’t bouncing back and forth between things which will slow you down.

When I write down all the components of each task, no matter how small, I can then group them into batches. It makes me more efficient and takes less time to complete.

Notice I’ve said the phrase “write down” a million times. That’s because YOU MUST WRITE THINGS DOWN! Whether it’s your goals or a to-do list. You need to write it down for it to be real.

Now take your list and take your calendar and give each of those tasks a realistic time slot that’s not too much time but also not too little.

Keyword REALISTIC.

Schedule yourself breaks. Don’t plan out 8 hours straight of work. You might be able to do it, but you won’t be effective. You should get up and walk around at least a few minutes on every hour. If it’s scheduled in your day, you won’t feel guilty.

Know when your productive time is and when your body and mind naturally needs a break. I’m great first thing in the morning but my energy tanks from about 11-2 then I’m back up and running again.

I’ve learned that taking a nap or watching Netflix or cleaning the house (hahahahaha) during my off time makes me more prepared to CRUSH IT ( by Gary Vaynerchuk) when I get back to work.

Sometimes you do have to push through, but if you manage your time right, you shouldn’t have to because you’ll be much more productive when you are working.

Track how much time things take you so you can continue to work on being more productive and efficient as you schedule tasks in the future.

Also look at what you hate doing it might be a task you will want to think about outsourcing. When you dislike a task or aren’t good at it, it’s a drain of mental energy, and you usually will try to put it off as long as possible. It’s better to focus your energies on what you’re good at.

Take time to celebrate. You might think this sounds nuts. To celebrate a task. But you work hard. Be proud of what you’re accomplishing. Even if it’s the most mundane task it’s moving your business and life forward, so it IS something to be proud of.

If you’re like me, you’re constantly glued to your laptop, phone, social media, under the guise of working. Sometimes you do need to say what the hell I’m not doing a thing today and shut everything off.

Self-care and taking the time to recharge your batteries is the best thing you can do to boost your productivity.

If you have ways, you keep yourself organized and efficient I’d love to hear them.
