Pakistan beat New Zealand on DLS at Cricket World Cup – as it happened

New Zealand scored 401 but Pakistan won on DLS to stay alive at the Cricket World Cup

4th over: New Zealand 21-0 (Conway 10, Ravindra 9) Conway has struggled of late, with only 50 runs in the last four innings, but he’s a key man – especially in such a big game.

Ravindra, by contrast, is in the form of his life. He times a perfectly good delivery from Hasan Ali through extra cover for four, a shot of rare elegance. These two love batting together and they’ve made a strong start; Conway reinforces that point with an efficient clip to the square-leg boundary.

India skittle Sri Lanka for 55 in 302-run thrashing: Cricket World Cup 2023 – as it happened

India’s swashbuckling batting and brilliant seam bowling was too hot for Sri Lanka to handle as India hammered them by 302 runs to secure their semi-final slot

3rd over: India 14-1 (Gill 0, Kohli 9) India are aiming to become the sixth team to win the men’s World Cup without losing a game, after West Indies (1975 and 1979), Sri Lanka (1996) and Australia (2003 and 2007).

Back in the here and now, Kohli gets his second boundary with a bread-and-butter flick through midwicket. The wicket aside, Madushanka has been a bit too straight as he strives for the perfect inswinger.

South Africa thrash New Zealand by 190 runs: Cricket World Cup 2023 – as it happened

Superb centuries from Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen help South Africa dole out New Zealand’s second heaviest defeat in World Cup history.

3rd over: South Africa 6-0 (de Kock 4, Bavuma 2) A spectacular delivery from Boult beats de Kock on the inside, hits him on the thigh and deflects through to Latham. Boult instinctively goes up for caught behind, but his heart isn’t truly in it.

New Zealand have started well, and South Africa are playing cautiously as a result. Their best ODI innings are a crescendo, so the most important thing is to not lose early wickets.

This is tremendous. My old table football nemesis Andrew Miller has written literally thousands of top-class pieces in the past 20-odd years. Thousands of pieces, tens of thousands of beautifully crafted words - and his place in history was earned by a single utterance in May 2022.

A bit of England news: David Willey will retire from international cricket after this World Cup. History, I suspect, will be kinder to his England career than most of us were during it.

West Ham 0-1 Everton: Premier League – as it happened

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s excellent goal gave Everton a deserved win against a surprisingly poor West Ham

4 min Some good early possession for West Ham, though all of it has been in front of the Everton defence.

4 min “As often happens (twice a year) I have woken up an hour early because y’all over there have changed your clocks and we here in ‘Murica have not,” writes J. R. in Illinois. “Anyway there’s obviously a huge match coming up later. I’ll bide my time by watching the preliminary matches until the big one kicks off in about four hours. Really looking forward to seeing how Gian van Veen fares in his first matchup with Michael van Gerwen.”

Australia beat New Zealand by five runs in Cricket World Cup classic – as it happened

A World Cup-record 771 runs were scored in Dharamsala, with Australia holding their nerve to win a magnificent match

Anthem time in Dharamsala, confirming – if confirmation was needed – that Australia will play in yellow, New Zealand in black, and that Australia’s national anthem isn’t great, and New Zealand’s is.

If I was an international cricket coach I would just stick this on the change room projector about now.
