And the Oscar Goes To…

Cloud Compute? Check! Cloud Storage? Check! DB? Uh…
At least that is traditionally been the response when cloud providers look across at each other (or answer customer questions). Solving the issues of replicated, synchronized data stores in a highly fragmented and distributed architecture is a real pain.
According to GenieDB, though, they may have solved the problem:

The key problem here is in being able to carry out local transactions and yet synchronize those transactions...
The Gray Area of Online Video
I came across a post about a new “DVR service” for online video:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/30/mediamalls-playlater-brings-dvr-to-internet-video/
As soon as I read this, and how PlayLater will generate revenue, red flags started going up. How can a company make revenue by wrapping someone else’s content in their proprietary security? Hulu doesn’t own that content. The consumer doesn’t own that content. And, most certainly, PlayLater does not either. But here they are generating revenue aga...
Is the Future of Gaming in the Clouds?
According to the CEO of OnLive, the answer is yes.
I, though, am not quite sure.
First, as an avid gamer of MMOs, I have routinely encountered the impact of lag on the gaming experience. And this is on significant bandwidth. That is because lag is both a combination available bandwidth, user computer, and server load. The cloud-based gaming companies propose to remove the user computer from the equation. Although I don’t see how that is possible (as even if the service is run through a browser,...

Apple, Netflix Offer New OTT Approach

I’ve always felt that one key hurdle preventing OTT video from having an impact on the subscription pay-TV service was the billing relationships. OTT subscribers have to establish multiple billing relationships with … “fix” the...
Pushing Boundaries is not Necessarily Good Writing
Although I will reserve judgment until I’ve had a chance to peek at it, on the surface, this latest book composed of 12 years of texting seems to put another nail in the coffin of literature:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/13/woman-publishes-book-filled-with-12-years-of-her-personal-texts/
Although I could see an interesting use of text messaging as part of a narrative convention, I have a hard time believing that 12-years of text messages, no matter how intricately weaved and interspersed wit...
Wow, and I thought it was all just fun and games?!
That’s right. Sometimes the things we think are just fun and games actually have a lot of science behind them:

I wonder if knowing this will make me a better shot?
Probably not.
Review: AOL Editions for iPad (Hands on)
AOL recently launched their Editions by AOL application for the iPad. This application is along the same lines as Flipboard and other personalized magazine applications for the tablet. I decided to take this for a test drive based on another, related post I wrote about the evolution of the magazine.
The application is highly configurable and very easy to use. The first step is to connect it to one of three social media outlets:
Facebook,
Twitter, or
AOL.
Once connected, you can specify a zipcode (...
Sometimes We Forget…
The Earth is moving all the time beneath our feet. I think we often take for granted that the sun rises and sets because the planet we live on is turning. But when you get a chance to see the heavens from the perspective of this motion, it puts things back into a sublime perspective.
