Breastfeeding: anywhere, anytime
I happened to be feeding the baby while watching Sunrise on Friday, when host David Koch (Kochie) passed comment on the story about a breastfeeding mum who had been asked by lifeguards to move away from the poolside (where she was supervising children AND feeding her baby). Kochie took the problematic stand that he supported breastfeeding mums BUT… And it’s the “but” that is the issue at hand. The thing is, in Australia, the right to breastfeed in public is protected by law. That’s it. There’...

Running on the spot
Feels like I’m constantly trying to get things done right now and for every step forward I make, another ten steps appear! Top of the list is the house hunting, which is proving depressing. Have applications in on a few places, one that we’ve now been waiting over a week to hear from (and of course, it’s the one we really like, and knowing our luck, we’ll get it, after I’ve spent a week stressing and wasting time looking at a bunch of others!). Have had one rejection so far, and am at the poi...

And since the holiday?
What have we done? Well, we’ve had Helen, Stewart and Julala visit off and on since last Sunday, as they try to find their perfect spot to relocate to. We’ve been house hunting ourselves, and have checked out those rentals suitable for us and put in a couple of applications. Fingers crossed one comes through quickly, because we have less than two weeks now until the move out deadline (though chances are we won’t be able to get out before then anyway – ah well!). I’ve been desperately trying t...
Holidaying in WA
Tuesday 18th December
Very early start to get to airport for 6.30am flight. Love Launceston airport for ease of bag drop and parking! First time withFOUR kids on flights – they were very very good! Especially the baby, who slept through most of it. Master Two was a bit feral by the end of the second flight, and woke up very cranky from his too-short sleep, but coped okay. Was a bit hot to hang about waiting for car rental, both in airport and again when picking up (they had the wrong car seats...

A brief FableCroft update
I’ve been noodling away on FableCroft Publishing jobs behind the scenes over the past couple of months, snatching time when I can! Managed to get a little run on things this week, so we had some announcements:
1. Christmas special on To Spin a Darker Stair by Catherynne M Valente, Faith Mudge and illustrated by Kathleen Jennings. Gift wrapped, discounted, great gift idea! Offer ends December 15.
2. I announced the (draft) table of contents for the next FableCroft anthology One Small Step. It’s...
Another week over
It boggles me how fast time is going right now! With the broken sleep, and lots of baby cuddles during the day, as well as running around after the bigger kids, it just seems to evaporate! Since last update, one thing that has happened was a surprise visit from the landlord of our rental here (COMPLETELY against all the rules!) to tell us she was not prepared to extend our lease for the duration we had requested, meaning we either have to be bullied into another 12 months, or leave. Given our...

Um, where did that fortnight go?
That’s a bit of a rhetorical question I guess; I know where the past fortnight went. Down the rabbit hole of newborn baby/surgery recovery/being a mum in the lead up to Christmas! I was feeling pretty ordinary for a couple of weeks, but with a bit of help from daycare for the toddler, and my lovely family & friends, by the beginning of week three I was starting to perk up. This past week I’ve felt great, am coping well with the lack of sleep and starting to get a few things done that aren’t j...

20 years on
According to my school friend Mandy, we finished Year 12 twenty years ago yesterday. Twenty years. That’s a long freaking time. That means I’ve been more years out of school than I was in it (not counting uni and work life!). It means that over half my life is post-schooling. Wow. I moved around a lot when I was a kid (ha, what’s changed?) and went to about nine different schools. My final four years though (the longest of anywhere) were all Miles High School, a country school – we had about...

A chance to rest, a chance to post
It’s been a bit of a whirlwind week. I came home from hospital on Monday and haven’t been much with it since. Baby has been a bit tricky on night sleeping and has caused a bit of havoc with feeding. I’ve sleep with him on the recliner for two nights, but last night he slept for four hours at a stretch, and he’s been quite happy to go in the cot during the day, so we’ll try the cot again tonight. I also got the expressing machine out today and got three feeds ready in advance, as a start on fi...
