Adam and Isaac here. Several months ago, Johnny O’Neal from Brotherwise came out to Utah to show us an early test copy of Call to Adventure: The Stormlight Archive. We had a blast. The artwork was incredible, the gameplay was engaging, and most of all—at least for me (Adam)—it was fun to craft my very own character on Roshar.

After several months of working with Johnny, Chris, and the entire Brotherwise team we’re excited to say the preorders open today for the first official board game based on The Stormlight Archive. Isaac, our art director, and Karen, our continuity editor, have provided feedback on the over 120 pieces of original art commissioned for the game and they are incredible. Here’s a look at some of them:

Isaac here. I’ve liked Brotherwise’s games ever since I picked up Boss Monster several years ago. I didn’t know much about the game company, and they hadn’t approached Dragonsteel yet about their Stormlight Archive game, but even then, I was impressed with the quality of the game and the quality of the art. When they did cards in homage to Brandon and several other fantasy authors, I started to realize that not only were their games fun, maybe the people behind the games also had similar reading tastes.

So when Brotherwise approached us about theming a version of Call to Adventure to the Stormlight Archive, we didn’t have to deliberate very long about it. Now that they’re about to release the game, and I’ve had a chance to play the new version with Adam and Johnny, I have to say that partnering with Brotherwsie has been an excellent experience. The game is fun and cool, and the art…! If I open my mouth and get started on the art, then I’m not sure if you’ll get me to shut up about it. Let’s just say that some of my favorite Stormlight pieces ever are found in this game. I think you’re going to love it.

A Bit About the Game

Adam here again. As I said before, The Call to Adventure game system invites you to build your own character in Roshar. You begin with an Origin, like a Shin farmer or an Alethi warrior, then work toward your Destiny. You could belong to any one of the ten Orders of Knights Radiant, or you might secretly serve Odium. Over the course of the game you gain traits, face challenges, and ultimately confront Odium.

There will be two editions of the game. The core version contains everything needed for up to 4 players. It’s coming to game stores in late June. The Deluxe Edition is identical to the core version in terms of gameplay, but contains some nice extras: a book-style package, two foiled alternate-art cards, and A Worldhopper’s Guide to Roshar.

This 48-page booklet will only be available as part of the Deluxe Edition. It compiles information about the nations and cultures of Roshar, the Orders of Knights Radiant, and the forces of Odium. Most importantly, it’s a showcase for the game’s artists to share their vision of Roshar. Many of the artists—from Randy Vargas and Petar Penev to Ari Ibarra and Antti Hakosaari—are avid fans of the series and it’s been a real pleasure to see their excellent work on this project.

Isaac here. As many of you know, we’re hard at work preparing for our summer Kickstarter for the Dragonsteel edition of The Way of Kings. Today we’re kicking off the ramp-up period before the Kickstarter with a reveal we’ve been holding onto for quite some time.

Several years ago Brandon came to me with the idea of creating a huge movie-poster sized illustration of the Bridge Four crew. The idea was to have Kaladin and some of the original bridge men standing on a plateau on the bottom of the poster, but then up in the sky above them, there would be images of the bridge men as something more—almost Radiants—from roughly the Words of Radiance time period.

I held onto this idea for a while, keeping my eye out for just the right artist to create it, then at Illuxcon, I met the kind and amazing Zack Stella. We got to talking fantasy novels, and he recommended The Way of Kings to me before I got around to mentioning my connection to the books. I’ve loved Zack’s work for quite some time, and he turned out to be the perfect fit for creating this illustration.

Working with him was awesome. He instinctively grasped the aesthetics of the Stormlight Archive while at the same time bringing his trademark style to it. Every copy of the Dragonsteel edition of The Way of Kings sold through our summer Kickstarter will come with this nearly 24” x 36” movie-style poster folded up with it. I love the result, and I hope you will too.

For more information on the Kickstarter, Kara and I talked a little about it during JordanCon Online. Please note that all the details mentioned here aren’t finalized yet, and there are a few things that I got wrong when sitting in the hot seat (ie. we aren’t breaking The Way of Kings volumes at the UK breakpoint but after Interlude 6 and before Part 3) but the video should be pretty informative otherwise.

Art director Isaac here with an art reveal today. Recently Brandon, Kara, and Adam have been discussing publicity for Rhythm of War, and one thing that Tor has asked for is a simplified symbol to represent the Stormlight Archive on certain marketing materials.

Now, to be clear, we love the original Stormlight Archive symbol, and we are in no way abandoning or replacing it. Many readers have bought shirts and decals or have even gotten tattoos of it. We are using it in The Way of Kings leatherbound and will continue to use it as a chapter icon in Rhythm of War and future Stormlight books. So rest assured that we are not retiring this tried and true iconic symbol.

However, the symbol is complex, and it doesn’t read well at small sizes, so at Tor’s request, we’ve sought a simplified design. During this search, it occurred to Brandon and me that eventually we’ll need simplified symbols for all of the Cosmere worlds—symbols that will need to be easily recognizable from far distances—basically, space-era versions of our current symbols.

So, after hundreds of drawings and thumbnails, we’re unveiling to you now the space-era symbol for the Stormlight Archive.

We’ve built this on the skeleton of the original symbol, preserving the relationship between the sword, circle, and main focal point. Instead of extra swords, we have rays of light. Instead of the complex double-eye of the Almighty, we’ve chosen the burst of light from the original Cosmere symbol.

Going forward, we will actively use both this symbol and the original in promoting the Stormlight Archive, and eventually you can expect space-age versions of many of the current Cosmere planetary symbols.

Brandon’s wife Emily here. I was recently on one of Brandon’s livestreams where I was asked for advice in regards to being married to an author or creator. The below is the (edited for reading) answer I gave during the livestream. Either way, I hope that our advice can help a few of you out there who may be struggling with this.

First off, it’s a wild ride. Also, this advice isn’t intended to be a solution for everyone because all writers’ careers are different and their writing styles are different, but I think being married—or partnered—to anyone who makes their living in a creative way, you have to learn to communicate well.

For example: I don’t want to get in the way of Brandon’s creative process, but at the same time, it’s important that he be a husband and a father and all those other things too. So, figuring out—preferably beforehand—that this is family time, this is us time, this is writing time, etc. Figuring out a balance that works for both of you, then making it explicit, makes a big difference.

You have to decide what your role is as far as being a critique person too. I know spouses of writers who don’t read their partner’s work at all, and their spouse doesn’t want them to. (I would be really sad if Brandon didn’t let me read his books, because I love them.) For others, their spouse is their foremost critique person and they want them to give them hard, honest, critique. Others still, would be like, “No, I need you to be the cheerleader. I need you to be the person that tells me the good. There are other people that will tell me what’s wrong. You tell me what’s good about it.”

It’s important to figure out between the two of you. What does your spouse need you to do? And are you okay with that? So I would say that clear communication—used to set future expectations—is the primary advice I’d offer. The next bit of advice is to find other people who are in a similar situation and ask questions. That’s what I did and we seemed to get things figured out. Often by the seat of our pants and sometimes to our detriment, but we eventually got it sorted and I know you can too.

Hey, all. This week marks the 30th anniversary of the start of The Wheel of Time! I wanted to write something up for you, but I ended up using it for a new foreword for The Eye of the World that Tor is releasing. So you’ll be able to read it then. It’s a little about my experience as a youth picking up the first book, and a discussion of why I think The Wheel of Time has been so enduring.

Today, instead, I’ll point you toward some of the other commemorations that have been posted around the internet. In addition, I’ll leave you with a little tidbit.

This is generally the time of year when I talk about awards, and what I have that is eligible. It’s become a bit of a tradition this time of year for authors to run down their list of eligible works.

This year, though, I’d like to point those of you eligible to nominate for the Hugos toward an interesting fact. The Wheel of Time, I’ve been told, is eligible for Best Series. That might be surprising, since the series was finished some five years ago—but last year, Harriet and I released a novella set in the world in a charity anthology.

This sequence, about Perrin, was cut from A Memory of Light. But released on its own in this form, even if it’s not in the main continuity, is enough for Hugo eligibility. I’m tickled by this idea because the Hugo for Best Series was created in large part because of The Wheel of Time, which got nominated for Best Novel as a completed work.

I’m a big fan of the idea of a Best Series award. I’ve talked in the past about how some of the things we epic sf/fantasy writers work on are bigger than the sum of their parts. While I think the individual books are great, what is most remarkable to me about The Wheel of Time is its scope, its influence on the genre, and its plotting and pacing across fourteen enormous volumes.

So if there was ever a series that deserved the Best Series Hugo, it’s the one that made everyone create the award in the first place. Instead of focusing on other things I have that are eligible, I’d request that those who can nominate for the Hugos this year consider The Wheel of Time for Best Series. If it deserved a Best Novel nomination, it certainly deserves consideration for Best Series.

In order to get the Way of Kings leatherbound ready for our Kickstarter this summer, I need to sign thousands upon thousands of copies of the first signature. (A “signature” in this context means a group of pages of the book that will eventually be trimmed and bound together. You’ll see what they look like if you stop by and watch.)

To “celebrate” this (more to keep me from getting too bored) we’re going to be livestreaming it for a few hours (Saturday, November 11th at 1:00 p.m. MST), and I’ll be chatting with those who drop by and answering their questions. Adam will be watching the comments and reading out to me the best questions for me to answer.

I’m hoping this will be a casual and laid-back event, with me chatting about various things you all want to hear about. We’ll probably be more likely to answer questions that launch me into a story about my life or the writing of a specific book or the like, and less focused on detailed lore questions, just because of the nature of the experience. (Adam will try to filter out spoiler questions and avoid them, or ask them in a way that doesn’t spoil too much. So if you haven’t finished one of the books, you should be safe watching, but the comments themselves might not be safe.)

Adam here. Many of you reading this probably already saw my post from a few weeks ago giving you your first peak at the new Dragonsteel special leather bound edition of Warbreaker. Well today, I am please to (finally) announce that we have recieved confirmation from the bindery that the orders will be shipped out very soon. So, if you ordered from one of our fine independent partners I mentioned in my previous post, they should be getting those in hand very soon. If you preordered them from Brandon’s website store, we should have those in hand soon as well and will be shipping them out as soon as we can in the order the they were received. Each book is pre-signed, pre-shrinkwrapped, and pre-packed in individual boxes which means you’ll be getting pristine books. (Please note that the way the leather stretches over the books’ hubs and spine typical of how leather reacts to the board underneath.)

Since my last post went up—and sorry about the bad news here—we’ve sold through almost all of our first printing. As of today (Dec. 13), we have approximately 200 numbered copies available, and 500 unnumbered copies remaining. That will be the end of our current supply. We will be ordering a second printing soon, but we don’t know when we will be getting new copies in.

In this volume, we’ve changed slightly the way we include art. The gallery at the beginning is much shorter—4 pages—and highlights the US cover and three international covers. The rest of the art is scattered throughought the rest of the book, including Ben McSweeney’s spot art of Nightblood, Jian Guo’s beautiful dropcaps, and six full-color illustrations that were commissioned for this edition.

All full-color art is printed on pearlescent paper that makes the colors sparkle a little bit. (Please note, due to the hoops the binder had to jump through to make this work, we cannot guarantee the use of pearlescent paper for printings beyond the first. We can guarantee, however, that the book will still be beautiful.)

As we’ve said before, this is the highest-quality (and in my opinion, the most beautiful) book we’ve produced. Those of you who pay attention to the blog have probably noticed a lot of recommendations coming from Brandon’s assistants over the last few months. First was Peter’s recommendation of Brent Week’s Burning White, the final volume in the Lightbringer series. Then, last week, Isaac and I wrote a little post for Blood of Empire by Brian McClellan, which is the final volume of his Gods of Blood and Powder trilogy. And today, we have The Light of All that Falls by James Islington (out today), which is the third volume of The Licanius Trilogy. So, needless to say, it has been a long-anticipated time of year for us here at Dragonsteel HQ with so many great stories wrapping up.

I was lucky enough to stumble across this series back when it first came out in 2015 while I was searching for books narrated by the great Michael Kramer who also narrates many of Brandon’s books (The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, Arcanum Unbounded, The Rithmatist—you get it, he narrates a lot of Brandon’s books) and is one of my favorite narrators. And just like Brent Weeks and Brian McClellan, James Islington’s Licanius Trilogy is one of the first books I recommend to people who are searching for more works like Brandon’s.

I can’t tell you anything about The Light of all that Fall—except the fact that I love the title—because I haven’t read it yet. I am currently wrapping up my reread of the first two books in preparation for today’s release. If you’re not familiar with these stories, here is a snippet from the front flap of the first book in series, The Shadow of What Was Lost.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs’ fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion’s Four Tenets.

A representation of these laws is now written into the flesh of any who use the Gift, forcing those so marked into absolute obedience. As a student of the Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war fought–and lost–before he was born. Despised by most beyond the school walls, he and those around him are all but prisoners as they attempt to learn control of the Gift. Worse, as Davian struggles with his lessons, he knows there is further to fall if he cannot pass his final tests. But when he discovers he has the ability to wield the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything.

To the north an ancient enemy, long thought defeated, begins to stir. And to the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian’s wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is….

So my hope is that you will give this series—and author—a try and love them just as much as I do.

Brian McClellan’s final book in the Gods of Blood and Powder series releases today—Blood of Empire. Not only does this book complete this latest trilogy, it also completes the second trilogy set in his Powder Mage world.

Fresh off the action from the Powder Mage trilogy, Brian jumps across the ocean to a new-world sort of continent—Fatrasta—where a young colonial-America type nation has taken root. But there are problems. An ancient civilization rises up to challenge the nation’s newfound independence.

Enter Ben Styke, a hero of the revolution. Everyone thought he was dead, but he’d been in a labor camp for years. Now he’s back, and what follows is some of Brian’s best writing and best characters. Not to mention the God Stones—this is the stuff I read fantasy for. Wrath of Empire continued Ben’s story (among other terrific characters), and now we’re on to the finale with Blood of Empire.
