Hey, guys! I actually have something different for you. I have a book review. I normally do these on my Goodreads. But I’m here in front of the camera. I just did my weekly update. And I thought, what if I just did a vlog version of this. It’s going to be a little less thought out. It’s going to be a little less produced than my normal Goodreads reviews. But the same sort of standards hold.
I only recommend things if I like them. So basically, I give everything five stars. This is because you shouldn’t be coming to be for an in-depth look at a book because the last thing an author needs is Brandon Sanderson trashing their book. If I don’t like a book, I’m just not going to recommend it. If I do like a book, I will recommend it, and I will talk about it, and I will give it a five-star rating, mostly to indicate you should listen to the review, or watch the review, or read the review, and see if it’s a book for you.
In this case, I want to talk about Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. This is my favorite book that I read last year. I really liked The Martian. I liked Artemis. And I liked this better than either of those. This is more a Brandon book. I mean, I really loved The Martian, but who doesn’t love The Martian? This one has a little bit more science fiction to it. This one has a bit of a more complex narrative and a bit of a more interesting, complex character. And yet it has all the stuff I loved in The Martian. This is the stuff that Andy Weir is really good at.
What can we learn as writers from Andy’s writing in this? Well, what I love that Andy does is he shows that optimism can be compelling as a narrative. I don’t mind the grimdark movement. I think there’s lots of great books that have come out of it. And I like dystopian science fiction quite a bit. Some of my favorite stories are very depressing dystopian stories, such as Harrison Bergeron. But there is a certain electric-fun to optimism. And Andy Weir writes optimistic science fiction, optimistic hard science fiction, even when terrible things are happening.
Because in this book there are certain crises that are pretty terrible. But the idea behind them is the characters are likeable. The story has got its eyes forward instead of backward. And it involves a lot of interesting problem solving. It does hard science fiction in a way that is not off putting, that I feel like I could hand this book to my mother and she—let’s just say is not big on science fiction at all—and I think she’d have a blast with it. Same with The Martian. You don’t have to view hard science fiction as this thing that is this deep, impenetrable genre that people can’t enjoy if they don’t have a Ph.D. And I really enjoyed this book.
It is a—I’m not sure what the actual official term is. It’s what I call a white room novel. White room novels or stories are stories that start off with a character not remembering who they are or how they got where they are, and part of the narrative is figuring that out. And a lot of times you wake up in a white room in these. His you actually do. A lot of them you don’t. The Bourne Identity is a white room novel and it’s one of the best examples of this. The Original, that I did with Mary Robinette is one of these. If you haven’t watched that, you might enjoy it. Or listened to it. It’s an audio original. But I just happen to really like this trope. I think it’s fascinating and interesting, particularly when you do what he did, which is a nonlinear narrative, kind of showing you how the character got where he is at the start.
And so I highly recommend it. I really loved the book. As for a content rating, I think there is an F-bomb somewhere in it, but I do not see anything else in it that would rate it beyond a PG. It is an uplifting, exciting, and well-written novel that I think all of you would enjoy, and I recommend it to you.

Adam here. I know many of you have been *patiently* waiting for us to finally reveal the cover and title for the third volume in Brandon’s Skyward Series—many of you correctly guessing this would be our first announcement after Brandon’s vague teasing in his most recent

Introduction
Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell—the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. Brandon here for our Weekly Update. Got some fun things to talk to you about today.
First thing is I should let you know Wax and Wayne still going pretty well. I just went over 20%. And by Monday, I’m going to guess I’m around 22%-23%, inching up on the quarter mark to that book being done. Everything’s going real well. I got a little less done this last week because I took some outlining time early in the week. But still I’m going to hit around 8,000 or 9,000 words as I still have Friday to write.
We also have a book release this week. We have the wide release on the Dark One graphic novel. If you’re not familiar with this, we did do a mini release last year. It was kind of a limited release. Now it’s going out to actual bookstores. There’s a Barnes & Noble exclusive edition, and there is the regular edition. It depends on which cover you like better.
The Barnes & Noble exclusive edition also has a map and poster included. You should be able to pick up a copy at Barnes & Nobles and anywhere books are sold. You can ask for it at your local comic shops. I don’t know however, if they’re going to—not all comic shops carry hardcover graphic novels—but a lot of them do nowadays, because the graphic novels are becoming such a big deal.
If you aren’t familiar with this one, this is basically my premise is a young man finds out that a fantasy world, kind of like Narnia-esque, has decided he’s their upcoming Dark One. And so he lives in our world and they’ve sent assassins through to kill him before he can become the Dark One and take over their world. That is available right now from Vault Comics and the excellent crew there. I really love the art for this. So I hope you guys will enjoy it. That comes out on the 18th, so Tuesday, so the day after this will go live.
Also some quick Kickstarter updates. If you are still waiting on your goodie bundle, we are about a third of the way through shipping those. It’s probably going to be a multi-month process to get them all out to you. But the first third are out and we’re continuing to do them. So if you’re waiting on yours, it should be coming within the next month or two.
Likewise, we are almost ready to ship out the 2021 leatherbound. In the past I was wrong about these shipping out. I hope I didn’t ever say it on the update. Because the printer has still been getting all of the slipcases ready. I thought that once we turned in the pages it would start, but they have to wait for the slipcases. Those are projected to come in in June, and they’re going to start shipping June 1st is our goal right now. And again, that will take multi-month, multi-month process. There’s, like, 15,000 of those.
As soon as they get them bound, a set of them bound with the slipcases done, they will ship off that group of them. And they’re just going to be going out probably by the thousands each week for the foreseeable future, starting on June 1st. I will let you know when that actually happens for sure. But if you’ve been waiting for yours, that’s when they should start going out.
Otherwise, things are going pretty well here in Dragonsteel HQ. I am writing away on Wax and Wayne, really enjoying the process of that book, and really looking forward to you guys being able to enjoy Dark One.

Hey! Brandon here. You know, I said that these were not going to be weekly probably, even though I was going to call them weekly, and now we’ve done one every week.
So here is our Weekly Update.
I am still working on Wax and Wayne 4. It’s going really well. I have just finished the first chunk of scenes, and it came together. I’m somewhere around 12%, I believe, is what my latest send-in to the team was, and it’s looking really good. Right now, if I haven’t mentioned before, I’m planning to finish this by August 1st. I’m planning the book at about 150,000 words. There is a longer update on Reddit, if you’ve kind of missed some of these updates and just want to read only about Wax and Wayne 4, which we’ll link in the liner notes.
Last time I asked you what you guys were most interested in regarding art books for the Stormlight Archive. And 66% of you prefer the guidebook style. You can look last week if you want to know. This is what I thought you would say. It’s the one that I thought would be most interesting, an in-world guidebook that features a lot of art but also is kind of like a coffee table book you can put out that you can give to a friend who hasn’t read the Stormlight Archive and they’re like, “What’s it about?” Well, here is some cool artwork with some in-world descriptions.
I kicked around some ideas with Isaac on this. We’ll probably start working on this. Again, this is probably not for four years or so. But we will start working on this. It looks like you guys are excited. We did get 20,000 responses from you, so that’s really good. And the overwhelming majority of you, 76% of you, said that we would buy all three if we put them together. And I chatted with Isaac, and right now we’re going to take the first two on this list, because we think that we can make the coffee table art book and the guidebook kind of combined into one. But what we can’t really combine in that is the encyclopedia-style book, which we’d actually want to be alphabetized, and things like that.
And so what we’re going to do is we are going to start kind of working on these two things together but as separate books that we would sell together and sell separately. But probably do a Kickstarter for the two of them together, and then later on you can just buy them individually. So like, a larger art book/guidebook as one, and then an encyclopedia-style sort of companion book, and things like that. I really think these will work well matching the first five books, because we will probably have to do separate ones after book 10 that would cover that era of Stormlight, the 6 through 10.
Thank you for your feedback. It’s been really super helpful at pointing us the way we should be working. And because this feedback was so good, my team came to me and said, “Could you ask them another question this week?” So I hope you guys are up for another poll.
Because one of the things we’ve been working on, we get a lot of requests for more games. Not necessarily video games, we get a lot of requests for video games. We can’t just—video games are hard. But we get a lot of requests for board games, RPGs, these sorts of things. And we are thinking of doing a Stormlight one. We do have Mistborn House War. And we also have the kind of deck-building card game Call to Adventure: Stormlight. We want to do something else in this realm, focused on the Stormlight Archive, more of a traditional board game sort of thing.
But we weren’t sure what you guys were interested in. And so we actually have a little poll attached to this. And this is just, we only want the one you are most interested in right now, the one we would do first. I can imagine us doing multiples of these in the future. But for right now, what do you want most?
And so our options are, a kind of lighter, faster board game. And our examples like that are something like Splendor or Ticket to Ride. Again, those are only examples. It’s not like we would go and make a Stormlight version of one of those games. We just want you to kind of see where our head is at. And some of our board game experts that we talked to said these were smart categories.
There’s a medium-length game style that would be more like Small World or Dune: Imperium, where it’s, again, medium length.
There would be the heavy, large, in-depth game, like War of the Ring is the example they gave. My brother loves these, the big, intricate, massive board games that take days to play. Would you be interested in that?
And then there’s a legacy game, like Gloomhaven. The games that play, they’re probably going to play like a medium-style game, but you’re going to change the game as you go. They’re very much the rage. I like legacy games, so I made them throw that in there as an option as well.
And then, of course, there’s the classic pen and paper RPG, which we don’t have yet for Stormlight.
I imagine we’re going to do multiples of these in the future. Which one are you most excited to get right now? What would you like us to work on next? And this is mostly targeted to you board game fans. What are you looking forward to getting from us? And we will take that advice to heart. Anything you want to mention in the comments about what you like and what you don’t like, and where we should steer clear and where we should go. We’re getting more experience in this realm. I think we’re doing a better job with each thing that we make. But those comments are really helpful to us, just to know what people are wanting. We don’t want to overload you with merchandise. We want to be targeted in creating the things that we are excited about and you’re excited about.

Hey! Brandon here for your Weekly Update
In this Weekly Update, I have a couple of cool things for you. The first one is to announce we have gotten the last piece of swag from the Kickstarter rewards, the playing cards. Or we have been shipped them. They haven’t arrived yet, but they have been shipped. Which means that when those get here, we will collate all of them and be sending everyone their final shipment of swag, which I’m very excited to do because it looks like we’ll be able to start shipping late this month, early next month, and everyone should have their swag and everything in hand well before the one-year mark of the Kickstarter, which was always our goal. It’s looking really great. So I am happy to announce that to you.
Other big announcement is I have finished the prewriting for The Lost Metal, the fourth Wax and Wayne book. I am ready to start writing. In fact, by the time you get this, I’m recording this on Friday this time, by the time you get this, I will probably have spent Monday writing new material. So we can make the progress bar go to 100 for the prewriting, and we can begin the progress bar on the actual book.
Last week in the Weekly Update, I asked the question, which of the two designs you all liked better in regard to the UK mini-hardcovers of Stormlight. And you chose the watermarked versions. Some of you couldn’t tell the difference. I’ll admit, the first time I looked at them I’m like, “Uh?” It’s very subtle. But 80% to 20%, overwhelmingly you preferred the watermarked editions. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to get those in the States or in Canada. I know that they will be in the UK, mainly in Europe and Australia. I think they’ll be available in all of those places. And other parts of the world I don’t know about. But we’ll see what we can do. If you’re interested in getting them, there are places you can order UK editions around the world. Book Depository does that. So anyway, thank you for that.
In the comments I saw that one of you was asking about my pre-writing process. And the main place to look for that is my lecture series. I do two weeks on plotting. And that would be the place to look there. But in short to your answer for this one, what I did was, there were three big steps. The beginning was trying to—I wrote character, setting, plot, together in a document. And I then did a subheading for each of the main characters. For this book it’ll be Wax, Wayne, Steris, and Marasi. And I said, all right, what are their character arcs? How do they change? What do they want in this book? What’s going on with them? And that was the first pillar I wanted to hit. I wanted to make sure that everybody was working, and that I knew where they were all going and where they would end. Because this is the last book of that sequence and I want the ending to be spectacular and things like that.
The next part was setting. And in this mostly it was developing the magic system, making sure that the things that I’m doing with it, the new ideas that are coming in in development are in line with the general goals for the Cosmere and for Scadrial, and that everything that I wanted to do worked within the bounds of the magic, and bouncing that off of my team and making sure that I was explaining things well, why things worked like they did.
And then the last part was to construct the actual plot. This is what is happening? What are people wanting to do? How am I weaving in character arcs to this large construct that is the plot of the book? And that took about two weeks for this book. It’s a little deceptive because I generally only spend four days a week working on this stuff and one day a week working on other things, mostly interviews, YouTube sort of stuff, some video game stuff I can’t announce yet, things like that.
That was about eight days of work, roughly, to get that outline into shape, and we are now moving on to the writing process. If you want to know more, you can watch the lecture series. I have been working hard on the new Wax and Wayne novel, prewriting. But I would say, it’s kind of a rough count, that I’m about 40% done with that. We don’t actually have a progress bar for this because it’s going to be done by next week sometime. But about 40% of the way through. I should, theoretically, next week’s update be like, “Done!” But you can see then where we get. It’s going real well. I’ve been sending out lots of emails to my team, saying, “Hey, what about this? What about this?” And they are giving me responses and kind of first looks at my plotting and how it’s going.
We have a couple of cool things. In the comments last week and weeks before we had a lot of questions about the Dawnshard audiobook. Where is that? I can’t tell you when, but it should be coming out sometime this summer. We’re looking just which publishers to put it with and things like that. We actually already recorded the audio. We had Michael and Kate do that. And so I think it’s both of them, him doing Lopen and her doing Rysn. But regardless, we have that audio. We’re ready. It’s just going to take us a little bit because we want to find the right distribution place. But it’s coming.
We also, I wanted to mention, because we did the whole thing a couple weeks back where I mentioned, “Hey, do you guys want a hardcover of Mistborn: Secret History?” And you’re all like, “Yeah, we do!” We went and looked and the eBook was not for sale in the US. Turns out Amazon had had a hiccup. We had to go poke them and be like, “Why can’t people buy this?” So you can now again. Like I’ve said many times before, it is part of Arcanum Unbounded. It’s like, you can buy Arcanum Unbounded for $8, or whatever. I don’t know the actual price. Or you can buy Secret History by itself for $4 or something.
But it is now available as a standalone, and we’ll be getting to work on a print edition.
And speaking of print editions. This is for those of you in the UK. The UK did a nice little kind of hardcover, smaller-sized hardcover of The Final Empire a few years back, and people really liked that. They’ve done some of these for Pratchett’s works and things at the publisher. They want to do one for Stormlight, the first four books of Stormlight, eventually with the fifth one, just in this small size. They aren’t exactly sure what the dimensions is, but it will be hardcover without a jacket flap, just kind of in this almost pocket hardcover size. They sent us two styles of cover. And we’re actually going to put those on the screen for you. One has a watermark. One doesn’t. And we want you to tell us which one to do, and we will tell the publisher.
So vote for your favorite. Do you like the one with the watermark? This won’t replace the standard UK editions. You can still get those if you like that cover scheme. But it’s just trying something new. They did this with the Wheel of Time books, and like I said, they did it with Final Empire. Something just a little more iconographic rather than illustrative.
