Hey, Brandon here for our Weekly Update. This is a big one. Skyward 3 is done. Last night, I’m recording this on Thursday, these go up on Monday, so last night I turned in the book, the 5.0 edition of it finally. It was a lot of work to get this one ready. The book is finished, coming out sometime in November. We don’t have an actual release date yet, as far as I know. So cover reveal, title reveal, and release date reveal are upcoming, but it’s done.
That means that tomorrow, Friday as when I’m recording this, I start on Wax and Wayne book 4, which will be the final of the Wax and Wayne series of Era 2 of Mistborn. So we will start a progress bar, of pre-writing for Wax and Wayne. I anticipate spending around a week, maybe a week and a half, working on the outline for this. So next week’s update should get us pretty close to being done. We’ll see how long it takes me to get that outline ready. And I’m excited to do this. I should be writing on it for three to four months, followed by three to four months of revisions.
The store wanted me to mention, thank you, guys, for your enthusiasm about the socks. This is our new t-shirt. This is the Cosmere symbol, the futuristic Stormlight symbol, isn’t it? Yeah. Simplified. We call it futuristic. We want to have a future era one, kind of a space-age era one. So this is the new Stormlight symbol. It’s not replacing the other one. It’s just the simplified/space age, space era Stormlight. We had requests for this, so we put it up. It looks like it glows in the dark, but I don’t think it actually does. I went in the dark to double-check. It is not a glow-in-the-dark shirt, but it is awesome.
Kickstarter updates, we have the coins. The coins have finally arrived. This is the second-to-last thing we were waiting for. They are all ready. We’re just waiting on the playing cards. As soon as those come, we’ll start shipping all of this swag to you. They look fantastic. They came together. Still not going to show you what the Wit coin looks like on the back. That one is a mystery and a secret. But yeah, I love these. I’m holding the Windrunner, Jezrien, or Yeazrien if you wish.
If you guys didn’t get to take the quiz that we came up with that sorts you into an order, let us know in the YouTube comments what order you guys would be in. And I hope to be able to get you these coins very soon. If you didn’t do the Kickstarter, I don’t know when or if these coins will be up for sale. That is not something we’re sure on. We’re just focusing on getting everyone their Kickstarter stuff as soon as possible.

All right. Brandon here with our Weekly Update.
The third book of the Skyward series, I have finished the 4th draft and immediately started the next draft, last draft, the 5.0. And I’m about 30% through that draft. The goal is to turn that in the 31st of March, and so far, I’m on track with that. I need to do roughly 20,000 words a day, and it’s a 120,000-word book.
Other cool things. Way of Kings Prime, for those who did the Kickstarter, it is in stock. We have received it and we are beginning to ship the Way of Kings Prime and the Dawnshard hardcovers together to people. This is only in the states right now because internationally, the way we did shipping, is we’re going to put all the swag together. It’s almost here, but not yet. But that means you will start getting these in the mail. Kickstarter, our page there has more information.
What will be up for sale in our store, they wanted me to be very sure with you to tell you this is not a joke. But April 1st we are going to put up some leather bounds (not the leatherbound Way of Kings). I didn’t know this, but we have a few extras. Now that we have sent them all off and they are starting to need to ship from the bindery, so we actually need to send them now, because the bindery is almost ready to start shipping the 2021 level of leather bounds. We have a few more that we can sell. Those are going to go up on the store. Good luck.
We will hopefully have them in stock for Christmas this year. That’s one of our big goals. You can wait till then. But if you can’t wait till then, watch on the first. Don’t crash our website. It’s going to happen anyway. But those will be up for sale.
The store people wanted me to also let you know (this is all a marketing one. We’ll market less next time) we have socks in the store. We have these delightful Journey Before Destination socks. People have really liked our socks, and they are really nice socks. And we have Bridge Four with the Bridge Four symbol socks. I wear these a lot. They are with The Woven Pair. They do really nice socks. I actually think I’m wearing a pair right now of their socks. And so yeah, you can get those on the store.
And I wanted to ask you guys, what’s your favorite? Do you like the Journey Before Destination with the cool glyph designed by Isaac? Or do you like the Bridge Four blue socks with the Bridge Four patch on it? It says Bridge Four on the feet. Let us know in the comments.
Oh, by the way, last week, thank you, guys, for your feedback on the small edition of Mistborn: Secret History. It is almost assured that we will go forward with doing that, as well as doing eventually a leather bound of Arcanum Unbounded. So you’ll be able to choose which of the two you want. Your feedback was very helpful. We read through that, and we are proceeding and going to see if we can get that made.
Otherwise, I am still plowing through that third book. It is not going to be named Nowhere. You will find the title out eventually once the marketing people decide they want to let it out.

Hey, this is Brandon. Time for our Weekly-ish Update.
I am still working on Skyward 3. We came up with a name. It’s going to be announced eventually. We’re going to let the publisher do it. I’m working through the 4.0. And I am 10,000 words away from the 4.0, last night I looked, which is roughly 8%. So we can actually do our little percentage bar. We are getting closer and closer. I have one more revision after this, which is the 5.0, which I’ll keep you up to date on every week how far I’ve gotten through that. Goal is maybe to finish that 4.0 tonight, and then start on the 5.0 on Friday.
We’re also going to start collecting announcements and stuff for these things, so they won’t always be this repetitive. Though I do have a question for you guys this week. My question for you is, the other day I thought, you know, since we have these nice little hardcovers of Edgedancer and Dawnshard, would people like, in the same format, a small little hardcover of Mistborn: Secret History, the Mistborn novella? We would probably do it in a maroon instead of a blue, so it would match either the hardcovers that TOR released or our leather bounds. And you could have that on the shelf. Or do you prefer just having them all in Arcanum Unbounded. Where it’s right now you can get it in Arcanum Unbounded. You can get that in a hardcover. But would you like a mini-sized hardcover? Would you buy that? Would you be interested in us releasing that maybe next year around the time that I do release Wax and Wayne 4. Hey, Brandon here. Weekly Update. I am still working on Skyward book 3, which we just named. But I can’t tell you what the name is yet because the publisher wants to do publicity. It’s not going to be Nowhere. I’d warned you guys for a while that I thought that the publisher would change it, and indeed they had a bunch of suggestions and some of them were pretty good. So you will expect eventually a title drop of Skyward 3 coming.
I am right about the three-quarter mark on the 4.0 draft. And I’ll be perfectly honest. Kind of getting tired of doing revisions. This is not my favorite part of the process, but it’s almost done. I have to do this one, and then do one more draft, which is the final polish, where generally I try to cut about 10% off the book during the final polish. And so that needs to be turned in by April 1st. No jokes.
And so now the question is, can Brandon keep going on this and not get distracted by something else shiny. And this is what I’ve had to train myself to do over the years, is to keep at it. Those last few revisions on a book, by then I’m like, “Man, I’ve read this thing five times in a row now.” But I will get through that. We will keep you up to date.
And then hopefully April 1st, maybe we’ll post it not on April 1st, whatever that week is, I hope to be able to tell you that I’ve started on Wax and Wayne.

Hey, Brandon here. I want to start a new thing on my YouTube channel, which is periodically giving you updates on the books I’m writing. This should happen every other week, sometimes every week. We’ll call it the Weekly Update. It may not actually be every week.
But weekly update for this week. I am working still on Skyward 3. I have finished the 3.0. We have gone through the entire beta read and I’ve digested beta reader comments and I’m jumping into the 4.0. This one is getting a big revision to the beginning of the book. I had, in the 3.0, really focused on the last two-thirds of the book, and I really made some changes there that were really strong. But I had not yet quite decided what I wanted to do with the first third of the book. And beta readers highlighted a bunch of stuff that I was pretty sure was still a problem, and indeed, it is a problem. And so I’m doing kind of some big shakeups to the opening of the book. It’s looking really good. I actually just finished the first third, and now I have to go into the second two thirds, which should be a less difficult revision because there should just be minor tweaks to that. When that’s done, I will start the 5.0 immediately, which is the final polish and turn in.
The book is not going to be called Nowhere, I’m pretty sure. I’ve tried to push my publisher and they’re just like, “We don’t like that title.” And it’s OK. I let them, in the YA space, really talk about titles and choose titles. So who knows what it’ll be? A fourth book is probably going to be called Defiant. That’s where we’re kind of moving for the fourth book. Third book, no idea yet. I will keep you updated on that. Once I’ve finished the 5.0, I will hand it off to Peter and Karen and the team, really Peter at that point, and I will start on Wax and Wayne 4, which will be my next project. A lot of people are excited when they hear about that.
Other small updates. Kickstarter, if you ordered a 2021 leather bound, those are being sewn right now, which means they’re on the next to last step. They have to all be sewn, and then they have to get their foil leaf, and then the bindery will start shipping them out. So we’re getting very close. Not sure yet. If you ordered swag, we’re also getting very close on that. We’ve gotten in most of the swag. We’re waiting on three things. We’re waiting on the coins, which are almost done. We are waiting on the printing of Way of Kings Prime, which is also almost done. They have sent us the proofs on that and they’re looking really good. And we’re waiting on the cards, the playing cards. Those will take a little longer. So we’ll keep you up to date on those. Our goal is to get this all to you by the end of July, so by the end of the Kickstarter one-year point you will have it all. But we can’t tell how things are going to go shipping-wise because COVID has messed up a whole bunch of that.

We should have novellas in the Skyward universe coming out just before that. So watch for those. The first one of those just got its first draft done. I am a big proponent of a good balance in life. And this can be hard to do as a writer. Because a lot of you who want to write professionally, by necessity, have to have another job. When I took this class back in 2000, one of the things Dave (Wolverton) said is there are a lot of people in the writing community that will tell you that you shouldn’t have a family, for instance, because having a family will distract you from your writing, or you will be a bad family member because of your writing. And he said this is a fallacy and self-fulfilling prophecy. This does happen because they expect it to and because they have bad work habits. And I agree with him 100%. I think having a good family who is supportive of you in your writing is going to be infinitely more valuable to you than you can even imagine. You need to have passion for life to write passionate books, and you need to have a cheering section.
Now, there are some issues you want to be aware of. When I was newly published, I remember an event that happened that’s always stuck with me. I went out to dinner with some writer friends. This would have been Brandon Mull and Shannon Hale. And Mull and Shannon and me and our spouses were there. It was actually at Mama Chu’s restaurant, if any of you know that, in Utah Valley. And we had this wonderful, very exciting sort of meeting of minds. Mull and Shannon are two of my favorite people ever. They are fantastic writers. (I love how people mistake Brandon Mull and me for each other and occasionally show up in the wrong line. And we both will good-naturedly sign the other’s book when that happens.) But it was just was wonderful.
And I got to the end of this dinner, and on the way home I said to my wife, “Wasn’t that the most amazing thing ever?” This was one of my first meetings like this with other authors. And she said, “You didn’t look at me one time the entire night. I felt like I wasn’t there.”
Yes. (Pretty bad.)
And this was an eye-opener for me. Because I got married, by this community’s standards, later in life. I was 30, which is, like, ancient in Utah County terms. For our foreign readers, you might be like, “You got married that early? What’s wrong with you?” Because I’ve noticed in Europe, especially, they do tend to have a later marriage age. Around here, it tends to be a lot faster. And I was used to writing dominating my life because I did not have any family stuff, which is really important and really valuable. I just didn’t have it. I wanted it. I didn’t get it till later in life. And I had to realize that once I had other people in my life that I cared about to that extent, I couldn’t let writing dominate that.
Writing is something that can dominate every waking moment of your life if you’ll let it. A friend of mine, Howard Taylor, loves to use the joke, he’s very good with these, that goes, “It’s great being self-employed because you only have to work half days, and you get to decide which 12 hours that is.” It is true. This isn’t the only job like this. There are lots of jobs like this. But writing is one of those that if you let it, it will consume everything. This can be really dangerous. This can lead to everything being about you and nothing being about your loved ones, everything being about the writing. This can be very helpful as well because you can use off moments that other people might waste, like on a commute, thinking about your stories and working on them. It can be a very handy thing.
Emily and I had to work out some things, mostly issues with me dealing with this. And one of them was the realization that when I’m with her, I need to actually be with her. I can’t be on Roshar. I can’t be on Scadrial. I have to make sure that I’m there for my wife during those times. And in turn, one thing that I would tell you to try to explain to your loved ones is that you need uninterrupted writing time when it’s writing time.
This is not the case for every writer. But for most writers I know, you usually have a warm-up period and a cool-down period for your writing session. Which means that it takes you a little while to get into it, then you have a really productive section in the middle, and then you get finished with whatever scene you were working on, and you start to cool down. And if you still have writing time, you will then spin back up into another section or scene and then spin down again.
Getting interrupted in the middle of this really productive time can be catastrophic for a lot of writers. Even just a small thing that your spouse might think is not a big distraction at all, just saying, “Hey, what do you want for dinner?” can pull you out of that and can interrupt the flow, that instead of a 10-second interruption it can turn into another 30-minute interruption as you start spinning down naturally because you’ve been interrupted. And then you have to try to force yourself to spin back up. Learning how to spin up and down faster is something you can practice, but it’s not something every writer can do.
So, I recommend a kind of trade. Where you go to your loved ones and you learn how to make sure you are there for them during family time, and you wall that time off in your brain, and you’re not allowed to be thinking about your stories during that time. And in turn, you make your loved ones the guardians of your writing time, whatever that is you have in your life, where they’re going to make sure that nobody interrupts you during those important moments, that you have your two hours uninterrupted so that you aren’t getting a phone call in the middle of that, or the person coming to want to do pest control, or whatever it is, that you have that time.
What I do in my life is two writing sessions. I need about a two- to four-hour chunk. Anything less than that, and I generally can’t work on new prose for a chapter because of that spin up and spin down. I can do other things. I can outline. I can edit. But I can’t work on new prose unless I’ve got at least two hours. I like three or four. Usually, when everything is on, things have been a little off for COVID, but I usually get up at noon or 1:00 and write from 1:00 until 5:00, a four-hour chunk. At 5:00 I stop, and 5:00 until 10:00 is family time for me. And that is walled off. I don’t work on books, even in the back of my brain. It’s got to be a really steep wall for me to make sure I am there for them. And I have to mentally say, “You are there for them.” When your kids ask you to do something, that’s the time you say, “Yes, I’m going to go do that.”
There are things that’ll interrupt that. This class is one of them. But on a normal day, that time should be theirs. And then I go back to work at 10:00 after everybody goes to bed, theoretically (children are children). And I write from 10:00 until 2:00, and then 2:00 until 4:00 is goof-off time for me. Video game, reading a book, listening to a podcast, whatever it is I feel like doing, assuming I’ve met my word count goals and things like that.
This may not work for you, but I hope that some of these ideas help you with understanding this. I will reiterate what Dave said. A family and time away from your books is actually going to be really important for you not burning out, for you having things to write about, and for you keeping that good balance in your life. It’s much tougher when you can’t write full time like me, I understand that. But just take that to heart and hopefully it’ll be useful to you.

Adam here. I know it’s a bit weird to be just seeing a post about Rhythm of War being released. But between the frantic preparations (including a hard drive failing at the worst possible time) and the holiday, a post was something that I kept pushing off in wake of other matters needing my attention. But now that things have calmed down a bit, I wanted to be sure to get something on the blog for those who may not have known a book just launched. I say, “A book,” but we’re talking about Stormlight #4, and that felt a bit too anticlimactic.
Since Rhythm of War’s release, it’s hit #1 on the New York Time’s List for the Combined Print and E-Book Fiction and the Hard Cover Fiction lists, reaching the #1 spot on Amazon, as well as hitting #2 on USA Today’s list (which isn’t subdivided like the NYT’s list).
We here at Dragonsteel want to give our immense thanks to all of you. We know you have to wait a few years between books and we all (especially Brandon) appreciate all the patience you’ve shown and continue to give us. We know many of you would prefer for Brandon to stop writing other series in the Cosmere—and outside it—but Brandon has developed this schedule intentionally. It’s at a pace that allows him to get new Stormlight books out fairly quickly without taking away his sanity or seeing a diminishing level of quality in the story-telling.

Adam here. The long-anticipated novella is finally out today! For those of you who haven’t been following Brandon on social media, or this summer’s past Kickstarter for the 10th-anniversary edition of The Way of Kings, then this will probably be a very happy surprise for you.
If you’re preparing to dive into Rhythm of War when it’s released next week, this is the perfect time to read this story.
Here’s a bit about the novella:
From Brandon Sanderson—author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive and its fourth massive installment, Rhythm of War—comes a new hefty novella, Dawnshard. Taking place between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War, this tale (like Edgedancer before it) gives often-overshadowed characters their own chance to shine.
When a ghost ship is discovered, its crew presumed dead after trying to reach the storm-shrouded island Akinah, Navani Kholin must send an expedition to make sure the island hasn’t fallen into enemy hands. Knights Radiant who fly too near find their Stormlight suddenly drained, so the voyage must be by sea.
Shipowner Rysn Ftori lost the use of her legs but gained the companionship of Chiri-Chiri, a Stormlight-ingesting winged larkin, a species once thought extinct. Now Rysn’s pet is ill, and any hope for Chiri-Chiri’s recovery can be found only at the ancestral home of the larkin: Akinah. With the help of Lopen, the formerly one-armed Windrunner, Rysn must accept Navani’s quest and sail into the perilous storm from which no one has returned alive. If the crew cannot uncover the secrets of the hidden island city before the wrath of its ancient guardians falls upon them, the fate of Roshar and the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.
This story is similar to Brandon’s previously release novella set in the same world, Edgedancer, as it’s a way to bridge the gap between main releases in the Stormlight Archive epic.

Today, my art director, Isaac Stewart, opened his Kickstarter campaign for his children’s book Monsters Don’t Wear Underpants: A Lift-the-Flap Book. Isaac was instrumental in designing and running The Way of Kings leatherbound campaign, so while the subject matter is quite different from The Stormlight Archive, I think this is something you might enjoy.
I knew Isaac had been working on a children’s book¬—and even had a publisher for it at one point—but I hadn’t seen much of it. One day after art review, I picked up Isaac’s hand-made mockup of the book in his office and found myself chuckling at the illustrations and the jokes, and in some instances even laughing out loud. This book put a smile on my face and is just the sort of wacky thing kids and adults can both enjoy together.
In the very least, head on over to his Kickstarter page and watch the short 3-minute video, which is a read-through of the entire book. Even if you don’t decide to support the Kickstarter, I think you’ll enjoy the read.
