Hi! Brandon here with our Weekly Update. We’re a day late because I wanted to show you our tree. This is actually at the Festival of Trees in Salt Lake. We do one of these every year for charity. You can actually bid on this tree if you want. The Lightweaver Foundation, my foundation, put it together. It is gorgeous. It comes with one of our ornaments for this year. Which, if you want just an ornament, also for charity, we have those still on sale for about a week and a half. So get on one of those if you want to get them.
Just a couple other things to warn you about. Cytonic is out. So if you missed that somehow, please give the book a look. And finally, we’re going to be doing a giveaway for the holiday season. In fact, we’re going to be doing kind of a special one. We’re going to do a giveaway every day. But we’re not going to announce who gets them until our spoiler livestream. So look for details on that. You’ll be able to sign up. Adam will post all of that for you, and you can win some really cool things. We’ve got some ARCS of Rhythm of War, which are cool collector’s items, in there, as well as some other cool stuff we’re going to be giving away.

Hey! Brandon here with your Weekly Update. I have been busy signing stacks and stacks of copies of Cytonic because it is out tomorrow. Please go give it a look. This is the third book of the Skyward series.
I’m working on the fourth one now and, in fact, bing! I’m about 40% of the way done with the fourth one. In fact, I have been doing National Novel Writing Month and posting my updates daily, almost, on Reddit. So follow those links on my social media if you’re interested and are taking part in national Novel Writing Month yourself.
The other big thing to be aware of is our Dragonsteel Mini-Con is a go. It started today. In fact, I will be there tonight doing a spoiler Q&A and some live episodes of my podcast with Dan. Lots of other exciting things going on, tons of readings, tons of fun things happening with everybody. I might do a spoilerific reading as well. We are still accepting walk-ins at the door. The title is a little bit of a lie. Because I’m going to do more Episode One first.
I finally saw the finished product tonight–on the big screen, in 4k, with an atmos sound system. 
I knew that some of my larger suggestions had been adopted, but I was thrilled to see some of the smaller things I’d wanted also got adopted.
As an example of some of the things I’ve been saying: I really leaned hard into the idea that Lan needed to protect Moiraine more in the fighting. And there it was–him stopping trolloc after trolloc from reaching her. I even suggested that he dive over her to protect her from the collapsing building…and lo and behold, that exact moment was added to the finished product. It instantly became my second favorite scene of the episode. (Tam with the sword was my favorite.)
I have to admit, the Perrin-kills-his-wife scene turned out really well. The acting was solid, the way the shot was composed, and the gut punch (gut axe?) was solidly delivered to the audience. People in my showing gasped. So while I am still on the side of “this would have worked better with Master Luhhan,” I can’t really complain about how well the scene worked. And I did ask Rafe to make sure he at least played up the berzerker angle of Perrin here, and I was glad to see that working.
So, on to Episode Two. This one had more changes between draft and finished product than Episode One had, but Rafe had warned me it would be.
I can talk a little about the behind the scenes here, relating to things I had a hand in. But I won’t go into detail. Just as I prefer my beta readers not cut and paste quotes from early drafts for the public, I am not going to spend a lot of time on details of what was changed between drafts of these screenplays, particularly if I didn’t have a hand in it. I don’t think it’s my place; this isn’t my writing, but of the WoT television team. Much of this isn’t my content to share, and I want to respect their ownership of their storytelling.
If scripts ever do get released officially, then perhaps I can say more there. For now, I really just want to give personal reactions and talk about things that I specifically wanted to see in this episode, and how they panned out.
One thing I’d requested was more time with the characters, and I was very happy to see that. I really enjoyed the visuals in Shadar Logoth, and the moment between Rand and Egwene looking out was probably my favorite moment in this particular episode.
My most relevant lore contribution here probably involved pointing out some Three Oaths issues, and having Rafe go talk to Team Jordan to sort them out. Those are tricky to navigate. For example, it’s all right to have a whirlpool made by Moiraine suck down the ferry after Hightower jumped in and swam to it, particularly if she has stopped channeling. It’s not okay, though, for her to sink that ferry with lightning while he’s on it–even if he’s bringing it toward the trollocs, which will put her in danger.
To a lot of writers, those two things would seem very similar, but I’m hyper-sensitive to the three oaths after my tenure on the books. The solution Rafe and I hashed out after he’d talked to Maria works well enough, I think. (Sorry to any Hightower fans for his fate. Are there Hightower fans? I mean, there are fans of everything, so I assume so.)
Most everything I did in this one was small tweaks like this. Some Lan characterization requests (which were taken) and some tweaks to the Whitecloak encounter. (Which were also taken.)
Most if it is small, subtle tone sorts of things. And a few larger requests that he was already planning to change anyway, so I won’t go into them here. Though, comparing the screenplay to the finished product, they listened to me a lot on this episode. I hope I didn’t overwhelm them.
By the time I had reached this episode in my reading, I’d already cemented in my mind my personal canon that this is a completely different turning of the wheel from the books. That helped me focus on helping the story be the best version of what Rafe wanted to make, rather than fixating on whether each scene should be replaced with one more directly from the books.
(Though…I still tend to do a lot of requesting scenes be nudged closer to book ones in my feedback, even if I know that isn’t the way this adaptation needs to happen. Someone has to look out for you guys. Note that if you are curious WHY this adaptation isn’t quite as “straight from the books” as you might like, I go into it here and here.)
p.s. I read some people complaining about effects. I thought they ranged from fine to great. Those trollocs are really wonderful. In fact, I had lunch with some of them when I visited the Two Rivers two years back, and they were perfectly pleasant to me. Don’t know why they were so interested in killing everyone in this episode. Maybe craft services ran out of donuts.

Haven’t watched the final product yet, as I wasn’t able to make the premier. Disclosure, I’m one of the producers. My part equated to reading the scripts and offering feedback directly to Rafe, the show runner. I’ll be watching tonight, and there are a few details I’m curious to find out about in regards to whether he took my advice or not.
Biggest thing he and I disagreed on was Perrin’s wife. I realize that there is a good opportunity here for Perrin to be shown with rage issues, and to be afraid of the potential beast inside of him. I liked that idea, but didn’t like it being a wife for multiple reasons. First off, it feels a lot like the disposable wife trope (AKA Woman in the Fridge.) Beyond that, I think the trauma of having killed your wife is so huge, the story this is telling can’t realistically deal with it in a way that is responsible. Perrin killing his wife then going off on an adventure really bothers me, even still. I have faith that the writers won’t treat it lightly, but still. That kind of trauma, dealt with realistically and responsibly, is really difficult for an adventure series to deal with.
I suggested instead that he kill Master Luhhhan. As much as I hate to do Luhhan dirty like that, I think the idea Rafe and the team had here is a good one for accelerating Perrin’s plot. Accidentally killing your master steps the trauma back a little, but gives the same motivations and hesitance. One thing I don’t want this WoT adaptation to try to do is lean into being a tonal Game of Thrones replacement–IE, I don’t want to lean into the “Grimdark” ideas. Killing Perrin’s wife felt edgy just to be edgy.
That said, I really liked a LOT about this first episode. I prefer this method of us not knowing who the Dragon is, and I actually preferred (EDIT: Well, maybe not prefer, but think it’s a bold and interesting choice that I understand) this prologue. I thought it was a neat, different take on how to start the WoT. I really liked the introduction to Mat, and in screenplay form, I thought the pacing was solid–fast, catchy, exciting. People are complaining about it, though, so maybe in show form it’s too choppy. When I was on set, I liked the practical effects, and what I saw of the acting–so I’m expecting both of those to be great in the finished product.
EDIT: For those complaining about Abell Cauthon, I did try to get this one changed too. So at least they heard from one of us, offering complaint, before going to production. I always had a soft spot for him. I didn’t expect them to change this, though, with Mat’s more gritty backstory. Again, I do wish they had taken a less “grim” feel to all of this, though I do think the details of introducing Mat were interesting and a nice acceleration of his character. Which is a good thing, since the series will need to condense from the books, so moving character beats up in time is going to generally help with that.
This team is excellent, I have to say. Episode six is the best–least, I think that’s the number of the one I’m thinking about–so be on the lookout for it. But they have real respect for the story, and are good writers. This is an enormously difficult project to undertake, and I’m quite impressed by Rafe and everyone involved.

Hello, everybody. I am Brandon, here for a very different sort of Weekly Update for you. I am at the Turtle Bay Resort on beautiful North Shore Oahu in Hawaii. I’ve been writing here for the last week or so, a little over a week. And I’ve been working on the new Skyward book. And I thought I would give you an update. Sorry there wasn’t one last week. I was travelling on Thursday last week. Try to give you some shot of the ocean there. See?
So how’s it going? It’s going very well. I am about one-third through Defiant, the final book of the main Skyward sequence, the one I’m working on by myself, though there might be other stories to come with Janci. By the way, the second of those novellas is out, and I hope that you’re willing to give them a try. I’m very please with the work that Janci and I did on those. Regardless, it’s kind of all Skyward all the time around here because we have the third book coming out in about a week or so, Thanksgiving week here in the States, which is coming up real soon. Like I said, I’m one-third of the way through. You can actually follow on my social media my progress because I’m posting daily updates. This is because it’s National Novel Writing Month. And so I thought it would be cool to post my daily word counts as I move through this book. The goal is to have it done by—there’s some water—January 1st, and I’m on target, a little bit ahead, actually.
So anyway, I thought you guys would enjoy this. I’ll actually be back by the time this goes up because I fly home on Sunday. I’m getting back Monday morning. But anyway, next time it’ll be a little less scenic when I record one of these, and I’ll be back to tell you how things are going and to talk to you more about the con that we are having and about the progress on the books. Hello, and welcome to Weekly Update. I am still in costume. If you are wondering why, then go watch the livestream from last Saturday, the VOD of it. You can see me in full costume. I just wanted to record a quick Weekly Update for you after the fact here. I have finished the pre-writing for Defiant and will be starting it on Monday. And what’s cool is I’ve decided that this year I’m going to do National Novel Writing Month. It just kind of lined up. It’s part of why I delayed a little bit in getting that to 100%. Bing! And I wanted to launch into the book on Monday, and I thought that would be really fun. If you aren’t familiar with National Novel Writing Month, it’s where people try to write 50,000 words in a month. I used to do it a lot before I got published.
Why don’t I do it a lot now? Well, often the stars don’t align for me to start a new book starting on November 1st. And even more often I’m in revisions or something for some reason in November. But this year I’m starting a new book, and so we are actually, we’re going to do SandoWriMo instead of NaNoWriMo. I’m going to be posting my word count to r/Sanderson. Actually, Producer Adam is going to be doing that. I’ll text them to him and he will post them around. And we’ll use it as a, as I’ve been saying, kind of like a pace car, where you can kind of watch my progress. If you want to join in, post your own word count, talk about the book you’re writing, or things like that, we’ll have a thread probably about four times a week where we post my word counts.
And I think various members of my company are going to join in. I know Isaac, who is working on a project, he’s my art director, is probably going to be posting his word counts. Kathy said that she would, who is, she is our director of facilities over here. So we shall see if anyone else joins in. You’ll be able to follow us along and see our kind of daily and running total word count. And I’ll be working on Defiant, so you’ll be able to kind of watch it along.
The next Weekly Update you get from me, I will be in Hawaii a week from today. So you might get some Weekly Updates of me floating in the ocean. We’ll see. But either way, thank you, guys, so much. That’s really our only update, other than the fact that ReDawn is out, the second of the three novellas in the Skyward universe that I did with Janci Patterson. If you haven’t given it a look, I would really appreciate you checking it out, it and Sunreach, the first of those. And we are pushing toward Cytonic coming out now in under a month, just a couple of weeks away. Right when I get back from Hawaii, we will launch into the book coming out with Dragonsteel Mini-Con, and things like that.

Brandon here with your Weekly Update. I’m about 80% of the way through the things I need to get done in order to start the new Skyward book. I anticipate I’m going to get to it pretty soon here.
The goal is still to have that one done by January 1st. We’ll see how it goes. I’m down to about two months on that, which is doable. There’s just a lot of things that I needed to get ready before I could launch into it. Getting really close.
I also wanted to mention to you the second of the novellas is coming out tomorrow. When we sold these to Random House, it was really important to me and to Janci that we get two of them out before the novel Cytonic, the third book, launched. It just feels right in momentum of things. Like I’ve told you before, if you don’t end up reading these until after Cytonic is out, that is OK. It’s not going to totally ruin things for you. But the ideal pacing is novella 1, novella 2, and then Cytonic. And the publisher really wanted to release them, wait and release them all at once later on, and we wanted these out before Cytonic. We pushed very hard. And so if you enjoy getting them earlier rather than later, let me know. And also, I’m hoping that you’re willing to support this second novella because the publisher’s really, really worried that people will buy the first and then forget the second is coming out. And I think these novellas get progressively better. So I think you’re going to enjoy it. This is the novella starring Alanik and her alien perspective on Skyward Flight, and I think you’re really, really going to enjoy it. That’s out tomorrow.
Last thing that I want to bring up, pretty short one this week. I’ll be doing a livestream on Saturday. We changed it from a different day onto Saturday for Halloween. I will be in costume. My wife will be here theoretically in costume as well. And we are going to be opening fan mail. And so if you want to see us open all the various things people have been sending me across the last year, then you can come watch that livestream. It’s going to be during the day from 3:00 to 5:00. And so come for your Halloween viewing pleasure. Watch me open random things and answer question from fans. And if you, indeed, ever want to send me fan mail, we tend to save it up for these special livestreams. That’s the goal that we’ll be doing it this way in the future. We have the address for you right now either on the screen or in the liner notes, probably both.

Hey! Weekly Update time. It’s getting to be winter and it’s getting kind of cold, so I’ve broken out the authorial jacket with the nice patches on the elbows. I feel very professorly coming to you today. A few quick updates.
Skyward news. We have had an awesome reception to the first of the Skyward novellas. And we have a pretty aggressive schedule with these, which means that the second one is going to be out next week. That would be the last of the novellas until Cytonic is out in November, and then the final novella will come out after that. So if you aren’t up to date on your Skyward, you should go check out the first one, Sunreach, and be ready for ReDawn next week.
I am still working on some prewriting and clearing out some various things I need to do before I move on, doing some movie stuff and things like that that I can’t announce yet. I’m sorry about that. But there’s a few other things I wanted to mention.
My schedule for Mini-Con is out, this Dragonsteel Mini-Con that we are doing, putting on ourselves. And Adam will helpfully put that up on the screen right now. There’s going to be a spoiler Q&A. There’s going to be some other fun stuff with me. Dan and I will be doing a live podcast, stuff like that, that’s going to be interesting and fun for people who are coming to the con. If you can’t make it to the con, then we will be doing the stuff that is on Tuesday night, which is mainly my speech and Q&A and reading that will happen then. It’s a spoiler-free reading of something I’m working on. That will be available for everyone who wants to show up. Or those who pre-order the book anywhere in the country, you can get a code to watch that.
And speaking of the pre-order, last week I misspoke a little bit. The pin that you’re going to get is actually an M-Drone pin, rather than an M-Bot. That’ll make sense if you read at the end of Starsight, there is a drone involved, and it’s a new design for that. If you already have the M-Bot pin, this actually is something slightly different.
Other than that, only one other thing to announce to you, and that is for those who are wanting to take my class. Our submission window is going to be from 10:00 to 11:00 PM on October 23rd. So that is coming up. What does this mean? Well, during that hour we will take as many submissions as come in during that hour. Then my team, lead by Karen, is going to—she’s continuity editor Karen, and also a fantastic writer and editor. She is going to read through those and pick the 15 strongest submissions in order to be let into the small 15-person workshop that I do in conjunction with my class every year.
I often get questions of “Do I have to be local to take the class?” Yes, you do this year. You missed your chance last year when it was completely remote. I actually had one student from Belgium, and that was pretty fun. But this year you will have to be able to come once a week to Provo, Utah. So juggle that as you will. Do you have to be a BYU student? Not currently. You will have to sign up for BYU evening classes, pay a small fee. You sign up at—it’s easier to do than getting into the college or the university normally, because it is an evening class. But you will have to do that if you get in. You don’t have to get in, or submit to BYU first. If you get into the class, then you can go pay your fee at evening classes and take the class. At least, that’s how it’s happened with everyone in the past who has taken the class that was not currently a BYU student. So you can do that.
Tips for your submissions. A little extra weight is given to those who have taken the lecture series already. So if you are at BYU and want to take the lecture portion, that’s the version that I sometimes record for my channel here, you can just sign up for that. That’s open enrollment. It’s, like, 1 credit hour, and it’s just a lecture every week. It’s after that that I meet in a small group with 15 people and kind of try to mentor them on their writing a little bit. So if you’ve taken the lecture series already, you get a little bit more weight. The more books you’ve finished, the better. You get a little more weight if you can say, “Hey, I’ve written eight novels.” Right? So if you want to get in the class in a future year, that’s something to do.
Otherwise, it’s really based on the strength of your writing submission. How good is that writing? So maybe watch the lecture series. Do your best. Submit, and it’ll really come down to what Karen thinks makes the balance and mix for the class. Good luck to you. Hey, Brandon here for your Weekly Update. Things are moving along on Wax and Wayne, which I am finished with the 2.0 draft and people are doing the beta reads. So not much of an update there.
On Skyward 4 I am still in the pre-writing phase. Been taking it a little easy these last few weeks, doing some other things as well. So we’re only at about, bing!, 33%, I’ll say, on the pre-writing on that. I hope to launch into it before too much longer.
But I do have some fun other things for you. We’re doing a preorder campaign for Cytonic, Skyward 3. And this is being run through my publisher. And we were trying to find a way that we could just reward everyone who preorders the book, no matter where they preorder it. And so my publisher has come up with this great idea where what happens is, if you preorder the book anywhere, if you preorder it from a US retailer and you get proof of purchase, you can go to a link that is in the description here to GetUnderlined, which is Random House’s website. And they will then send you a Doomslug enamel pin and virtual access to the release party. This is my speech and Q&A and reading that will be part of the Cytonic release and part of Dragonsteel MiniCon. That is awesome. We hope that you guys will look into that. Both of these campaigns end on November 22nd at midnight Eastern time, which is leading up to the book launch, so that’s the last minute you can do it. Not sure what we’re going to be doing with my UK folks, but we’re trying to figure something out there as well that’ll have their own fun things going on. Just different publishers, so different sweepstakes and different things like that.
Speaking of Cytonic, the first of the novellas that are taking place between the books has come out, and it’s called Sunreach. And the reviews are fantastic. I think we finally hit a jive with co-authors where people are just loving what was happening. So if you haven’t checked out Sunreach, still give that a look. And we just revealed the cover of the second one, called ReDawn. I think it’s gorgeous.
One other thing. We are going to be livestreaming this month for Halloween. We have changed that livestream to the 30th to be a little closer to Halloween, during the day on Saturday, rather than in the evening. Just some various things came up and we realized probably the closer to Halloween we can get the better, and we thought doing in the evening Friday, people are going to be at Halloween parties and stuff. We’ll just do it in the afternoon. That is the one where I will be in costume, my wife will be in costume, and we’re going to be opening fan mail. We’re moving that to the 30th.
One thing I actually forgot to mention. The King’s Wild Project is doing these lovely Mistborn playing cards. You’ve heard me talk about them before, but they have their preorder campaign going on right now. This tells them how many of these to order and how excited people are by them. That’ll inform a lot of things that we decide upon. And I wanted to squeeze this into the update because I have really enjoyed working with them. They’ve done some fantastic art on these, and I think it’s a really high-quality product. So I wanted to make sure you guys all know about the preorder campaign for that, in case you are interested in getting these lovely playing cards.

Weekly Update time from Brandon. All right. Wax and Wayne 4 is off to the beta readers. It has begun that process. The 2.0 draft, as I have mentioned, is done. So that one, bing! 100% on our second draft.
I, right now, am pre-writing for Skyward 4, and I’m about 20%, bing, of that. Though that’s going to be a little slower because I’ve had another one of these Mainframe projects come in. This is one I’m doing with Dan Wells, who you may know from the channel. And he’s been working on something very cool with me, and I’m going to spend a few days on that.
In addition, we had Sunreach come out last week. If you somehow missed that, this is a new novella in the world of Skyward. It’s been getting really fantastic reviews from my fans. So hey, go give it a check out. It is in audiobook and in eBook. Print edition will come some time next year as a collection with all three of the novellas we’re doing together.
I got a lot of questions about where the reading order is. I expect the reading order for this series to go book 1, book 2, novella 1, novella 2, book 3, novella 3, book 4. A little complicated, but if that’s too complicated, you can read the novellas any time after book 2. You can read them all after book 3. You can read them all before book 3 and it won’t really ruin anything. This is just how Janci and I planned them in narrative beat sort of thing. But it’s more an artistic thing than you’re not really going to get spoiled. We wrote them in such a way that they wouldn’t do that. Hopefully, you guys are enjoying those as they come out. There are two more to come with the big book launch happening in November.
I know a lot of you have been really waiting for this. This is very important. We have extra copies of the Way of Kings leather bound. We printed extra in case there were returns, or in case some got damage or things like that. We just wisely wanted to have a buffer. Now that we have sent all of those out, we know roughly how many of these we would need to keep just in case there are any last-minute scratch and dents that people need returns on or things like that. And Kara, the store manager, has told me we can release some of those for you guys to be able to purchase. These are already printed. These are at the bindery. These will all ship, drop ship directly from the binder to you to keep fewer hands on them. This does mean you can’t bundle them with anything else from the store. This is like a special thing. We just have a certain number of these, and we will have them up for sale until they’re gone. I can’t guarantee we will have any more of these before Christmas. In fact, I would be very surprised if we did.
So this is your chance, if you weren’t in on the Kickstarter, to get a Way of Kings leather bound as a Christmas gift or something like that. You can order it now. It will be drop shipped immediately. And theoretically, these will all arrive fairly quickly. But who knows? So if you want a Way of Kings leather bound, they are live now. I’m recording this on Thursday. They go live on Monday, which is when we release this.
Otherwise, just one little fun thing I want to make a note. Watch the channel this week. I actually interviewed Will Friedle at FanX this year. He is an acquaintance and a fan of my books. Years ago he was doing the voice for Bumblebee in the cartoon show. He’s a voice actor. You might know him from Boy Meets World in live action, but he’s also done a bunch of voice acting. And he sent my kids a bunch of cool stuff when they were much younger, Bumblebee costumes and things like that. I posted that online. You may have seen it. But regardless, we had a really fun conversation at FanX where I interviewed him. He interviewed me back a little bit. It’s something new we’re going to be starting for the channel. We’ve got a couple more of these in the queue. This went live on Friday last week, so it’s already up. If you missed it, go give it a look. I think it’s something cool and new that we’re trying out for the channel. Let us know if you want me to do more things like this.
So livestream schedule. We will be doing two livestreams in October and none in November. This is because November I have the book launch. It’s going to be very busy. And October we wanted to do a Halloween one. So the 7th we’ll have a livestream, which is a normal Q&A livestream. And then the 28th, that’s the Thursday before Halloween. But Emily my wife and I will be here in costume, and we will be opening fan mail the entire stream, rather than taking questions. There might be questions in the fan mail, in which case I’ll be answering those. This is your kind of last chance to get something sent to us. The P.O. box is in the description. These will all be pre-screened, but I will not have seen them.
And if you sent us something in the last year or so and we haven’t opened it, we’ve been saving them up to do a full stream. I didn’t realize how many there were.
