Contest! Help me with my current work in progress and win a $10 gift card.
I need help with my current WIP. My hero finds himself caring for his three year old niece. I need examples of things a man might do differently from a woman. For example, he puts a leash on the kid so she won’t get away from him in crowds. Or he let’s her eat ice cream straight from the carton so it doesn’t dirty a dish. Something that a woman might be alarmed at, but that really is just masculine, out-of-the-nurturing-box approach to child care and not only harmless, but might even be a better way. If I use your idea, I’ll gift you with a $10 gift card to B&N or Amazon, your choice. If it helps, the hero is a war vet struggling to integrate back into society and it’s Christmas time in Twilight. Yes, I’m going back to Twilight, Texas with this one.
Contest runs until the 15th of September. Winners will be announced here on the blog. Please respond in the comment section. If for some reason, you can’t post here, email me @ loriwilde@aol.com

Happy Labor Day Weekend
To celebrate the weekend, I thought I’d share the recipe for my homemade guacamole. Straight up invented it myself. It gets rave reviews.
1 large Haas avocado (peeled and pitted)
1 tablespoon of your favorite salsa
the juice of ½ lime
1 teaspoon mayo (don’t skip this and I always use Hellman’s)
1 teaspoon sour cream
Dash of onion powder
Dash of garlic powder
Salt to taste
Mash all the ingredients together, and refrigerate until chilled. Serve with tortilla chips. Bon Appetite!

Win a book a month for the next year.
Books, books, books!
Hey, guys. I’ve got a cool contest going on. I’m giving away a book of the month of contemporary authors over at Fresh Fiction. I pick the authors, you sit back and receive the books, one a month for a year. The first book is Katie Lane’s Flirting with Texas, (which B&N has named one of the top ten books of 2013 so far.) We’re talking authors like Rachel Gibson, Susan Mallery, Jill Shalvis, Kristan Higgins, Hope Ramsey, Christie Craig and Emma Cane. Come on over and enter to win. Contest runs through August. If you guys like the contest, I’ll do it again with other genres.

RWA Wrap Up
Best speech:
Tie between Cathy Maxwell and Kristan Higgins. Cried my eyes out during both.
Best workshop:
Since I only went to one workshop, Robyn Carr, Jill Shalvis and Kristan Higgins talking about how they write, it’s a bit of a cheat to say it was my favorite, but it was truly a great workshop and I hope the audience was paying attention.
Everyone else was buzzing about the self-publishing tracks.
I heard great things about Colleen Thompson’s Adrenaline Shots workshop and wish I could have gone.
Best Dinner:
Again, a tie between meeting up with my Duets homeys (we all used to write for Duets), Nancy Warren, Delores Fossen, Cindi Myers and Bonnie Tucker. I love you guys! We ate an intimate Italian restaurant near the hotel because it was raining outside. I had my favorite, caprese salad. Yum!
and
Dinner at the Pacific Rim, with Christie Craig (our first books came out the same year), Susan Mueller and Diane Kelly. I had the dumplings. When I’m at a Chinese restaurant, I always have dumplings. They’re my favorite.
I’m still on the road. Hubby is giving me the evil eye to get off the computer and get back in the truck. Will give more updates later.

RWA Conference
Oh gosh, where do I start? The RWA conference was amazing for so many reasons. Primarily, because I get to see all my friends again and meet new ones. Such a thrill. I’ll be doing a little recap this week, while I’m still on the road on book tour.
The thing I’m most proud of is that my former student, Miranda Liasson, won the Golden Heart! Although she credits me with too much influence. She did all the the work, mining for those streaks of gold that turn into a story. All I did was hold the lantern to make her mining go quicker. This is the kind of student I live to serve. One who is eager and persistent and hard working. One who will go back to the drawing board if things aren’t working. One who will never, ever give up.
Congrats, Miranda, you so deserve all your success and so much more!

BAM signing in McDonough, GA
Sunday I had a lovely signing at the Books-a-Million in McDonough, GA.
A few loyal fans showed up and there was lots of foot traffic. Here I am with Linda, who usually reads mysteries but decided to give me a chance and she liked my books.
The staff was friendly and the guy who announced my signing had a very sexy voice.
I met Nicole, a beautiful young woman who is struggling with serious health issues and her mother, Carolyn, who was a dialysis nurse like me. They reminded me why authors write–to touch the hearts of readers. These days, Nicole’s primary joy comes from books. Her favorite author is Debbie Macomber, because Debbie never fails to make her feel happy and safe. Nicole is such a brave young woman. I feel privileged to have met her.

Taking Some Me Time
We took a little side trip to Asheville, NC, just because I wanted to see it and we were in the area. Gorgeous place! Warm friendly people. Gave away books at the Farmer’s Market and made instant friends. And found my beloved pickled peaches prepared the right way. I was in pickled peach heaven.
Did some stock signings at local bookstores and visited the Biltmore Mansion. The place is jaw dropping. Unbelievable opulence. If you ever get a chance to visit, suck up the high entry fee and go! You won’t regret it.
We stopped for lunch at the Stable Cafe, which are actually, wait for it…
horse stables.

We had a great time at the Books a Million in Kingsport, ...
We had a great time at the Books a Million in Kingsport, TN yesterday. What a pretty little town. The mountains, the sky, the green grass. I was enchanted.
A few centuries ago my father’s family moved from these mountains to the dry plains of Texas. I look at this beauty and wonder why on earth anyone would leave it. I asked my dad and he said, “Free land in Texas.” Well that explains how I grew up with sand and grass burrs instead of lush rolling hills. It’s sort of surreal to see my maiden name on businesses around here and in the faces of the people, I see my ancestors. I feel very welcome in Tennessee and not just because of the friendly folks and the abundance of sweet tea.
Here I am with the store manager, Dawn Hembree. She is an awesome bookseller! Look at the wonderful table she had set up for me.
Thanks to everyone at the store and to all the readers who came by. I do so appreciate you and hope you enjoy the books!
