Guest Blog: Kacey Hammell

A Ghost for ChristmasKacey HammellPublisher: Evernight PublishingGenre: Paranormal Erotic RomanceRelease Date: December 6th ISBN# 978-1-77130-211-1

After receiving a long weekend at an elegant hotel beside the majestic Niagara Falls as a Christmas gift, Jodie Gibson is determined to do nothing but relax and enjoy the scenery. And, okay, just maybe meet someone who makes her toes curl.
Sebastian is sophisticated, tall, dark and gorgeous--everything a woman fantasizes about. But he's also an 18thcentury ghost. He haunts the halls of the hotel, seeking the one true love that can help him find peace…

Excerpt © Kacey Hammell
As she peered into the reflective glass, a face appeared behind her. Jodie whipped around and fell back against the window.
Oh my fucking God!
Before her, in what looked like a shimmering bubble, stood the most breathtakingly beautiful man she’d ever seen. Dressed in a white shirt and black pants, he had dark unruly hair and striking, magnetic blue eyes that held her in place.
Jodie blinked, uncertain, scared and breathless.
How was it possible? She’d read the newspaper clippings, yes, but it was unimaginable to think ghosts might actually walk among the living.
Not everything made sense. She only believed in things that could actually be seen, felt and touched. This seemed surreal.
Stunned by the apparition before her, dressed in what looked like centuries-old clothes straight out of Esquire, he seemed to look straight through her, and his smile warmed her clear to her toes. Lord, she was in trouble.
“Hello.” Soft and gravelly, his voice alone seduced her…all the way to her toes. Her body quivered and her center tightened.
Whoa. What the hell am I thinking?  There’s a ghost in front of me and I’m ready to jump his bones. Not bloody likely.
“What are you doing here? Get out.  I don’t care who you are, you’re leaving, right now.”
He frowned. “No need to be frightened.  I’ve been here for centuries.”
Jodie laughed, and not one to wilt like a scared little girl, stood tall. “This is all a joke.” She looked around, up and down, and all over the room. “Are there hidden cameras somewhere?  Hey, Ashton, if you’re behind the camera, you can come out now.  I’ve been Punk’d good. Thanks and all, but I’d like to get on with my evening without you.”
“Who is this Ashton? What is a punk?  A rake, perhaps?” he asked.
Jodie squinted.  “A rake?”  She hadn’t ever heard that term spoken, but had read it in historical romances. No one talked like that these days. “No. Never mind, it’s not important. Listen, I just want you to go. I want to enjoy my evening.”
His smile was gentle. “I’m sorry, my dear, but this evening every decade is the only time I am visible to the human eye. I never miss a chance to watch the Falls.”
Every decade…
“You’re telling me you do this every ten years? How old are you?”
“I was born in 1781. That makes me—”
“Two hundred thirty-one,” Jodie whispered, legs weak. She grabbed the back of the chair nearby and sat down. Were such things even possible?
Jesus.
An eighteenth century ghost stood before her.
Merry Christmas to me.

Holiday Gifts of Love Blog Hop

Welcome to my stop on the Holiday Gifts of Love Blog Hop! I hope you've been enjoying yourself so far.

Christmas traditions are a big part of the holidays at my house. There are some silly ones, some that involve food, and some that I can't manage living without.

Since food is one of my favorite things, making all the cookies and cakes are one of my favorite things. In recent years, my cousin and I have started making a Bûche de Noël cake for the whole family. It's a French tradition that involves creating a cake that looks like a log. I won't lie, it is a lot of work, but it is always worth it. The recipe we use is here, but there are plenty with a lot of different tastes.
Photo by Andrew PendletonMy other favorite holiday baking tradition comes from my Godmother's family. They make a Czech bread called Vánočka. I would love to post the recipe, but it is way too long. You can see one example here if you are interested. It involves taking the rind off many lemons and oranges and a bunch of other great steps that leave the kitchen smelling amazing. She also braids hers before it goes in the oven. It's how I learned to braid hair. My Godmother only makes it for Christmas, so you have to get your fill.

Photo by LedekSince I love Christmas, I couldn't help but write a holiday story. It doesn't include much baking, but my characters do manage to get a lot of treats.

Two is Twice as Nice
Cara must have been a very good girl this year, because Santa brought her the ultimate gift: two sexy men.

After a car accident last Christmas, Cara McCourt is left broken inside and out. Since then, no guy has bothered to give her the time of day. Just when she's convinced that no man will ever be interested in her again, she bumps into Anthony while holiday shopping. Unsure at first, Cara is quickly wooed by the man who thinks she is beautiful—despite her disfigurement.

Uncertain if Anthony is too good to be true, she takes a chance, only to find out he's been keeping a secret: His twin brother, Devon. Too late, Cara is drawn into their games. Will her wounded soul survive their deceit or did Santa actually bring her the ultimate gift: two men of her own?

When the little things matter

I miss people. That sounds weird, but it's true. In India, I don't have friends. I have colleagues, but it is a strange relationship and it is clear that we aren't anything more than that. At the end of the day (or 3:30PM, whichever comes first), they leave and go home to their families. I go back to my empty room.

For 16 hours each day I am basically alone. More if you count the hours that I'm in my office working by myself. It's a good way to go completely crazy. The other girls here are a full decade (yikes!) younger than me, study almost all the time, and have generally shown no desire to be friends. That's okay. I'm here for a short time and make a terrible long-distance friend.

It still leaves a lot of times when I would pay someone for a hug. Or a handshake. Really anything. If that person would bring coffee, I would be their friend forever. Still, it's how it was the last four trips, it's how it is this trip, and I imagine it is how it will be on my next (and final!) trip.

This time, however, something strange has happened. For whatever reason, one class of nursing students has grown fond of me. I cannot figure out why, but they approach me on the street all the time. Sometimes they want my headphones so they can listen to my English music (I have a feeling they don't understand the words). Other times, like today, they want to tell me about an upcoming trip they are taking. It's weird. They act like I'm a celebrity or something.

Today a group of about 20 girls (they are roughly 18 and would all fit nicely in my pocket) stopped me and wished me a Happy Christmas (nurses here are almost exclusively Christian) and explained that they would be going away tomorrow for the holiday. I listened with as much interest as I could while bouncing between four different girls and trying to make sense of the broken interest. Then one of the girls, who I'd never met before, handed me a flower.

Someone gave me a flower. It's tiny and it will be dead before the day is out, but I can't stop staring at it. I imagine that girl won't remember that moment in a couple days. She has boys to meets, books to study, and a cross-country trip that will end near a beach. I doubt I'll ever forget.

Happy hopping!

Thanks so much for stopping by my spot on the Evernight's Christmas Blog Hop. I love the holidays. No matter what you celebrate, there is something special about the season. My favorite part has always been the Christmas tree. Every year, my family would pull it out and start putting up the ornaments the day after Thanksgiving. It is always a nice trip down memory lane. We have all the ones my brother and I made while growing up and the ones we've collected traveling around the world.
I don't live at home anymore and can't participate in this tradition, but I have my own little tree and my mom always makes sure I get a couple new ornaments every year.
So, for an entry into the grand prize drawing, follow my blog and tell me in a comment what your favorite part of the holidays are. Don't forget to leave an email address (you want to know if you won, right?). Comments and blog followers are also entered into my own prize drawing for a $5 Amazon Gift Card.

Decadent Publishing Give A Reader A Reader

That is a long name. I suppose that is okay considering it is an awesome contest. We'll get to that part though. First, I want to tell you a story.

See, a little over a year ago, I was attending/in a wedding in Estes Park. I'd been in the procrastination early planning phase of actually making reservations for accommodation and stuff for a while. My family lives close, so I only planned on staying one night. How hard could that be? In my head, I was picturing a nice cabin with a private jacuzzi and a weekend alone with my husband. Perfect, right?

You're funny. My life never works out that way. The minute invitations went out, my plans went down the drain. See, my mother was also invited to the wedding. This shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did considering I invited this friend's parents to my own wedding. Still, it wasn't in my plan. No cabin with my mother in it was going to be romantic.

Then I went to India (yes, I know, you're tired of hearing that). I didn't want to plan from afar. I was being lazy. Then she told me there was a hotel that she'd always wanted to stay at there and would I like her to get my husband and I a room for that night as well? Free hotel room, food, and no work on my part? I couldn't very well say no. Especially since even though I'm married, I really don't want to explain to my mom why we need to go somewhere else.

Fast forward and the day of the wedding arrives. I'm exhausted. I drove 24 hours straight (yes, we're stupid) to actually get to the wedding. We were there a week early and I drove a minimum of 4 hours every day that week to help my friend or family, slept roughly 3 hours a night, then went to do actual work for the wedding day. The only time I got service all day, I sent my husband a text that said "bring alcohol".

So, we are getting ready to leave the reception and go to the hotel when my mom mentions that it is a haunted hotel. No, THE HAUNTED HOTEL. The one that Stephen King's The Shining is based on. I was not impressed. Nope, not at all. I was tired though and after a couple glasses of the wine the husband brought, I was asleep. For a few minutes. I work up many times throughout the night. Because of ghosts, but because of my own bad dreams.

We went on the tour the next day at The Stanley Hotel. It was actually very interesting. Especially the part about how the 4th floor is the most haunted and the only one without A/C. Guess which floor we stayed on?

It is quite lovely there. The scenery is gorgeous and the hotel is to die for (no pun intended). Without ghosts, it would be the perfect setting for a book.

Oh, wait. It was. Right after that, I wrote Public Display of Affection. It's a nice little story that involves some fun adult toys and a little exhibitionism. All of it takes place in front of the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. I don't make them stay in a haunted hotel though. I thought that might take away some of the fun :)

Public Display of Affection A 1 Nightstand Story
After a heartbreaking end to her relationship with her girlfriend, Lucy Stark is looking to try something more adventurous. She turns to Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand service to help her find the perfect woman to push her boundaries and introduce her to the more daring side of a sexual encounter.

Samantha Taylor’s helped more than one woman explore her sexuality, but Lucy’s the first to really get to her. Keeping her walls up and the women she dates from getting inside is a skill she’s managed to master. After one night of unbridled passion, she has to decide whether to give up her hard exterior or let the woman of her dreams slip away.

Available from Decadent Publishing, Amazon, and other ebook retailers.
