Decadent Publishing Give A Reader A Reader
That is a long name. I suppose that is okay considering it is an awesome contest. We'll get to that part though. First, I want to tell you a story.
See, a little over a year ago, I was attending/in a wedding in Estes Park. I'd been in the procrastination early planning phase of actually making reservations for accommodation and stuff for a while. My family lives close, so I only planned on staying one night. How hard could that be? In my head, I was picturing a nice cabin with a private jacuzzi and a weekend alone with my husband. Perfect, right?
You're funny. My life never works out that way. The minute invitations went out, my plans went down the drain. See, my mother was also invited to the wedding. This shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did considering I invited this friend's parents to my own wedding. Still, it wasn't in my plan. No cabin with my mother in it was going to be romantic.
Then I went to India (yes, I know, you're tired of hearing that). I didn't want to plan from afar. I was being lazy. Then she told me there was a hotel that she'd always wanted to stay at there and would I like her to get my husband and I a room for that night as well? Free hotel room, food, and no work on my part? I couldn't very well say no. Especially since even though I'm married, I really don't want to explain to my mom why we need to go somewhere else.
Fast forward and the day of the wedding arrives. I'm exhausted. I drove 24 hours straight (yes, we're stupid) to actually get to the wedding. We were there a week early and I drove a minimum of 4 hours every day that week to help my friend or family, slept roughly 3 hours a night, then went to do actual work for the wedding day. The only time I got service all day, I sent my husband a text that said "bring alcohol".
So, we are getting ready to leave the reception and go to the hotel when my mom mentions that it is a haunted hotel. No, THE HAUNTED HOTEL. The one that Stephen King's The Shining is based on. I was not impressed. Nope, not at all. I was tired though and after a couple glasses of the wine the husband brought, I was asleep. For a few minutes. I work up many times throughout the night. Because of ghosts, but because of my own bad dreams.
Photo by WallgWe went on the tour the next day at The Stanley Hotel. It was actually very interesting. Especially the part about how the 4th floor is the most haunted and the only one without A/C. Guess which floor we stayed on?
Photo by Rockin RobinIt is quite lovely there. The scenery is gorgeous and the hotel is to die for (no pun intended). Without ghosts, it would be the perfect setting for a book.
Oh, wait. It was. Right after that, I wrote Public Display of Affection. It's a nice little story that involves some fun adult toys and a little exhibitionism. All of it takes place in front of the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. I don't make them stay in a haunted hotel though. I thought that might take away some of the fun :)
