August 3, 2015: Hold Me In Your Crazy Arms!

Here's the new project from Guy Himber, aka CrazyBricks, who did the Munchkin Bricks project.

Crazy Arms will be of great interest to those who like to build little vignettes with their LEGO minifigs, and absolutely zero interest (yea, verily, negative numbers !) to anyone else. All I'm saying is that **I** supported it, okay?

So if you fall into the first category, check it out quickly, because it's almost over, and see if you want to help Guy make some of his stretch goals. Otherwise, don't bother clicking at all, because it just wears out the electrons.

August 1, 2015: Car Wars: The Card Game Revs Into Gear

Car Wars: The Card Games

I'm really excited about the return of Car Wars: The Card Game . While it's completely different in gameplay from the original Car Wars , the game's basic idea – drive fast, shoot your buddies, blow stuff up – remains gloriously intact. And this new edition has new weapons, new gadgets, and new tactical options that make the game even more exciting.

A really cool game gives you a memory to go with it, and I've got one for Car Wars: The Card Game . The game debuted in June of 1990, and I was living in Los Angeles. I got invited to a small game convention in San Luis Obispo. Also on the trip was my old friend Mike Stackpole, who didn't want to make the drive alone all the way from Phoenix, so he flew in to Burbank and we drove on up to SLO from there. The convention was on the Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo campus, a university whose most famous graduate was twisted songsmith "Weird" Al Yankovic. But that's another story for another time.

And we played games – lots of games. My favorite was Car Wars: The Card Game . Everybody wanted to play it, and it was one of the hits of the con. But my best memory from that weekend was a non-gaming moment that's still as geeky as it gets. The entire con shut down Saturday night as we gathered in one of the dorm party rooms to watch the classic cliffhanger Season 3 ending episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

You remember that one, right? "The Best of Both Worlds" it was called. And the Borg captured Captain Picard and assimilated him into the collective. And when Riker gave the order to fire on the Borg with Picard still on board, the "To Be Continued" graphic sent 100 or so geeks into screaming fits of awesomeness. It was a real bonding moment with the rest of the Nerd Collective, and I was proud to become a little bit more assimilated that weekend.

Good games and good times become good memories. And that's why I love games.

July 26, 2015: Crowdfunding Focus: Nuclear War 50th Anniversary Edition

Many of us who grew up in the '70s and '80s lived under the shadow of thermonuclear apocalypse. And many of us who were gamers dealt with this tension by playing one of the true classics of tabletop gaming: Flying Buffalo's Nuclear War .

Hard though it is to believe, Nuclear War (the game, not the concept) turns 50 years old in 2015. Rick Loomis, owner of Flying Buffalo, is running a Kickstarter campaign for a new edition of this staple of the tabletop. It is already over 200% funded, and the list of perks all backers receive continues to get longer. As of this post, there are still several open slots to get the sweet super-deluxe edition of the game and its expansions, but we expect they will probably run out well before the Kickstarter itself does.

Support an important piece of gaming history and get yourself a cool new edition of a classic game in the process! (Plus some bumper stickers or T-shirts, if that's your thing.) Here's that Kickstarter page one more time.

July 25, 2015: Notable Reprints For November

There are two notable reprints coming up in November: Munchkin Impossible and Munchkin Zombie Deluxe . Munchkin Impossible has been completely out-of-print and is finally back. Munc hkin Zombie Deluxe is now arriving in hobby stores.

Munchkin Impossible Munchkin Impossible

The Munchkins are now spies . . . eliminating the opposition, playing with self-destructing gadgets, and changing loyalties even faster than they change Headgear.

Be a Playboy, Tourist, or Assassin. Report to the Americans, Russians, British, or Chinese (it'll change!). Wield gadgets from the subtle Cigarette Dart Gun to the amazingly unsubtle Bazooka with Incendiary Ammo. Eliminate foes, from the pathetic Defective Defector, through the Interro-Gator and the Not So Secret Police, up to the mighty Super Spy himself. And (all together now) . . . Take Their Stuff!

You can play Munchkin Impossible by itself, or combine it with any number of other Munchkin games for more shameless silliness.

As always, this set is stand-alone, but can be combined with other Munchkin game. Vampire spies? Russian dwarves? Go crazy!

If you have friends who have never played dungeon adventures, the spy theme will let you hook them on Munchkin.

Enough gadgets to make any movie spy envious!
Munchkin Zombies Deluxe Munchkin Zombies Deluxe

It's the sickest, silliest Munchkin yet! You are zombies, kicking down doors and eating brains. The "monsters" you're attacking are people, some helpless and some hazardous, with a few rogue zombies thrown in. The armor is whatever you've blundered across during your lurching search for brains. So bravely you'll go forth, with mousetraps on your feet and a bowling trophy protecting your poor rotting head . . . to level up, or to die.

Again.

What makes this edition "deluxe"? It's got a big gameboard to keep your cards in place, and colored standies that you move on the gameboard as you level up!

This edition of Munchkin Zombies includes 12 zombie standies (male and female in six colors) and a Level track, to make SURE you know who's out in front!

Steve Jackson's macabre card ideas and John Kovalic's disgusting art . . . what more do you need to know?

BRAAAAAIIIINNNSS!
