Ridding the World of Religion—Christianity?

Will atheists be able to get rid of Christianity? Atheists Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss think so. Dawkins, a noted evolutionist and author of The God Delusion, and Krauss, professor of physics at Arizona State University and a frequent Creation Museum critic, recently appeared together in an interview to promote their new documentary The Unbelievers.

This film was produced to attack what they call “religion.” Of course (as is obvious from Dawkins’ book The God Delusion), the movie’s main purpose is to attack Christianity. Keep in mind that these are the two people who accuse us of committing “child abuse” because we teach children about biblical truths (creation, hell, and so on).

It seems that right now in the Western world, the secularists believe they have a license to go after Christians and the Christian faith like never before. Krauss is the atheist who said to an audience, “Forget Jesus, the stars died so you can be here today.” Apparently he wants people to worship the stars instead of the God who made the stars!

Now, during an interview about their documentary, Dawkins and Krauss were asked if their hope was to rid the world of religion. Dawkins answered that he thought Christianity is already on the decline and that his hope is that humanity will be able to “intelligently design our society, our ethics, our morality—so that we live in the kind of society we want to live in rather than in the kind of society that was laid down in a book written in 800 B.C.”

This is actually a great illustration of Judges 21:25, which states, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

What Dawkins and Krauss are really advocating is the lifting up of man’s word above God’s Word—and so they’ve made a documentary to push their anti-God atheistic view. What they are doing—and what they want people to do—is summed up by Romans 1:22–25:

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Today’s lead article on the Answers in Genesis website, written by Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell, is an in-depth analysis of the interview of Dawkins and Krauss. I suggest you all need to read her article and be ready with answers when people you know see this movie in the theaters. Being armed with information can help you in getting the truth of God’s Word to such people. Here are the first couple paragraphs of Dr. Mitchell’s article:

Following the April 29 opening of their documentary The Unbelievers at Toronto’s Hot Dog Film Festival, outspoken atheists Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss discussed the merits of their approaches to “ridding the world of religion.” In a recent interview with Steve Paikin,1 they made it clear that, despite their sometimes different personas, they have the same agenda—getting people to get rid of their belief in God. Yet they both say that Christians should not feel “threatened” by their efforts to expunge religion from human history.

The Goal of The Unbelievers Documentary

Evolutionary biologist Dawkins and theoretical physicist Krauss recounted that when they first met they had a heated debate about, as Dawkins said, “whether we should have a kind of full-on attack on religion or whether we should, as Lawrence preferred, seduce them.”2 Krauss explained that this is really “a strategic question.”3 They agree that both approaches have merit depending on the nature of the people being targeted. However, expressing general agreement with the more confrontational approach of the often-irascible Dawkins, Krauss said, “You’ve got to confront silly beliefs by telling them they are silly,” adding, “If you’re trying to convince people, pointing out that what they believe is nonsense is a better way to bring them around.”4

I urge you to read Dr. Mitchell’s full article and to pray that these two secularists will repent and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We certainly live in an era when Christianity is coming under massive attack. The vital nature of the AiG ministry, Creation Museum, and future Ark Encounter is clearly shown in that the most aggressive attack in this documentary is directed against biblical creationists. Krauss and Dawkins know that those who take a stand on the authority of God’s Word, as AiG does, are dealing with the foundational issue. Thus to these atheists, biblical creationists are the most dangerous Christians.

An Evolving Bible?

Did the Bible come about as man evolved? The Rev. Michael Dowd thinks so. Now, Dowd is a graduate of Palmer Seminary with a Master of Divinity and considers himself an “evolutionary evangelist.” In a recent article for the Huffington Post, Dowd has come up with a story of how the Bible may have come to be—from an evolutionary viewpoint!

Basically, Dowd holds that the Bible started as cultural accounts and traditions, which were passed down and changed over time—until being written down. He explains as follows:

Alas, when a story becomes Scripture, it ceases to evolve—at least in any functional, intentional way. Skillful and charismatic interpreters of unchanging Scripture can, of course, maintain the relevance of the sacred stories for a good deal longer by continuing to evolve the interpretations. Supposed miracles can be reinterpreted as metaphor; historical “fact” can be recast as value-laden parable. But when the interpretations themselves fall to the temptation of idolatry of the written word, absurdity eventually prevails. (emphasis added)

Really, Dowd is unhappy with the fact that Bible-believing Christians take God’s Word as unchanging and inerrant. He seems to believe it’s a bad thing that Scripture doesn’t change with the culture—now, that’s what I call an “absurd” belief!

But the “absurdity” that Dowd refers to is actually his own misunderstanding of Old Testament laws and how they are understood today. Dowd says he is “prone to point out the scriptural injunctions in my own tradition that modern sensibilities rightly recognize as morally repugnant.” He explains further:

For example, even the most conservative of Christians alive today do not respond to our disrespectful sons by inviting neighbors to join in stoning them to death. Nor do we advocate capital punishment for the sin of working on the sabbath. No western voice rises in support of ancient Middle Eastern customs of slicing off the hand of a thief or beheading blasphemers. In spite of scriptural admonitions, we apply modern moral reasoning—secular reasoning—that has emerged through the centuries as cultural conditions themselves evolve.

Actually, biblical Christians don’t use “modern moral reasoning” or “secular reasoning” to make decisions. The Bible is still very much our foundation for morality. Furthermore, I’ve heard this claim about stoning disrespectful children many times before, and Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell addressed it on our website—see Feedback: Doesn’t the Bible Condone the Killing of One’s Rebellious Child?

Dowd continues to caricature what he calls “biblical literalists” (including those of us at AiG), but he doesn’t seem to understand how Scripture is interpreted using a historical-grammatical hermeneutic. (For more on hermeneutics, read Tim Chaffey’s series on hermeneutics, part 1 and part 2.)

Now, there are a number of positions on how to understand the Law, and we at Answers in Genesis don’t take an official position on this issue. But today’s lead article on our website explains the three major views on understanding the Law. I urge you to read it so that you will better be able to respond to these sorts of claims—titled Why Don’t Christians Follow All the Old Testament Laws?

Because Dowd has accepted the anti-God religion of evolution, he then assumes that everything (including the Bible) has been evolving. He views the Bible as a totally human document that evolved as humans and culture evolved. His starting point is wrong, which is why his view of the Bible is wrong. I’m reminded of what God says about His Word:

Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven. (Psalm 119:89)

“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” (Matthew 5:18)

Concerning Your testimonies, I have known of old that You have founded them forever. (Psalm 119:152)

The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever. (Psalm 119:160)

“But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you. (1 Peter 1:25)

Meeting at the Creation Museum

A couple visiting the Creation Museum this past week had a very interesting story to tell us.

Jeff is from Sevierville, Tennessee (where we will be holding our national family conference in July, by the way). Ellie is from Tokyo, Japan. They have been doing a Bible study via Skype and then began corresponding. They decided to meet in person, so she came to the U.S. a week ago. The place she wanted most to visit in America was the Creation Museum—so they decided to meet here!

Here is photo of the couple taken at the Foto FX booth at the Creation Museum:

Helped Bring Me Back to My Savior

We receive so many wonderful testimonies from those people impacted by the ministry of AiG. Here is one received recently:

Thank you for creating this website! I happened upon it a week ago and have not been off it since! (Ok, I’m exaggerating, but not much.) Your article archives and question and answers make far more sense than any evolution/big bang theory I’ve heard! You’ve no idea how much this has helped and is helping bring me back to my Savior. And my 5 children as well. You’ve reminded me to be proud of my Savior, and how lowly I am for needing reminding. Thank you again.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

The Dragons Are Coming!

On Memorial Day weekend, the Creation Museum will open two new spectacular exhibits and the best zip-line course (2.5 miles of zip lines and 12 bridges, etc.) in our Tri-State region. One of the new exhibits will fill the large portico of the Creation Museum—filled with dragons!

With all-original spectacular artwork, intriguing portrayals of many dragon legends, hundreds of Chinese lanterns, two large colorful dragons from China and intriguing artifacts, this dragon display will be unique and awe inspiring. The question will be posed to our guests, “Were Dinosaurs Dragons?” I have seen the behind-the-scenes work on this massive exhibit, and I can say I’ve never seen anything like this in my travels around the world.

Over the summer months, AiG will be conducting a new billboard campaign, primarily in six cities that are less than a two-hour drive from the museum: Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Lexington. The month of June will feature billboards advertising the dragon exhibit, July will highlight the world-class insect exhibit, and August will feature the incredible zip-line course.

I wanted to give you a little glimpse of the coming dragon billboard campaign:

1. Here are just two of the illustrations our marketing agents (Joseph David Advertising) for the dragon billboards:

Dragon A

Dragon C

2. Here are two photographs of the company making the vinyl for one of the billboards:

2 1

These dragon billboards will be spectacular!

Of course, the atheists will probably go berserk as they did last year in response to our dinosaur billboard campaign. I’m glad they will have something new to complain about.

AiG will be aggressively marketing the Creation Museum to families so that even more parents, teens, and children will get to hear the truth of God’s Word and the gospel.

This coming year (beginning July 1) we should reach, and exceed, the 2 million mark for visitors to the Creation Museum.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

Richard Dawkins Continues His Vehement Attacks on Christians

Leading atheists never seem to tire of making outrageous and offensive claims. Professor Richard Dawkins of England makes his contempt for Christianity—and every other religion (except for his own religion of atheism)—no secret.

Not long ago, Dawkins made an incredibly controversial statement in an interview, claiming that teaching children about hell is worse than child sexual abuse. He tells the interviewer, “It seems to me that telling children such that they really, really believe that people who sin are going to go to hell and roast forever . . . It seems to me to be intuitively entirely reasonable that that is a worse form of child abuse that will give more nightmares, that will give more genuine distress” than being sexually abused. (You can view the whole video clip on YouTube.)

He said later, “Horrible as sexual abuse no doubt was, the damage was arguably less than the long-term psychological damage inflicted by bringing the child up Catholic in the first place.” (You can read my original blog post about this interview.) Though Dawkins had written about this anecdotal account to justify his opinions in his 2006 book The God Delusion, the interview disseminated his statements to a much wider audience. His outrageous statements even upset some fellow secularists.

As a recent article in the Daily Mail reports, Dawkins continues to push the fallacious view that teaching children about religion is “child abuse,” this time during a speech at the Chipping Norton Literary Festival:

Professor Richard Dawkins has claimed that forcing a religion on children without questioning its merits is as bad as ‘child abuse’. In typically incendiary style, the leading atheist said he was against the ‘indoctrination of religion’ and teaching it as fact. . . . Professor Dawkins said at the festival that children should be taught religion but scorn should be poured on its claims. ‘What a child should be taught is that religion exists; that some people believe this and some people believe that,’ the Daily Telegraph reported he had said. ‘What a child should never be taught is that you are a Catholic or Muslim child, therefore that is what you believe. That’s child abuse.’

Now, these claims that Christians are committing child abuse by teaching their children about the Bible, hell, biblical creation, and so on are nothing new. In fact, I outlined many of them in a prior blog post.

I’ve pointed out many times before that Dawkins is truly trying to convince himself that there is no God. He does exactly what the Apostle Paul describes in Romans 1: he “suppresses the truth in unrighteousness.”

The irony is that Dawkins recognizes that religion, specifically Christianity, has had a strong influence on art and literature. He said the following:

‘There is a value in teaching children about religion. You cannot really appreciate a lot of literature without knowing about religion. But we must not indoctrinate our children,’ he said.

Sadly, that appears to be the only value Dawkins sees in Christianity. Well, here at Answers in Genesis, our theme for the next two years is “Standing Our Ground, Rescuing Our Kids,” based on Galatians 1:3–4:

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.

As Christian parents, we have a responsibility to rescue our children from the evil of the world and teach them about the Bible—for more than just developing an appreciation for biblically related literature. The Bible proclaims the gospel of Jesus Christ, which “is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).

There will come a time when Dawkins will die—like everyone—and will stand before the Creator. He’ll have to answer for his willful ignorance of the truth and for the way he has urged people to lead children astray. I sincerely urge you to pray for Richard Dawkins, that he might repent and believe the gospel.

Don’t allow the secularists to win the hearts and minds of your children!

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”  (Deuteronomy 6:6–7)

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord. (Psalms 127:3)

Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

Because atheists like Richard Dawkins have become more aggressive in their attacks on Christianity, AiG’s Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell has written a detailed article about Dawkins and his outrageous accusations. Dawkins is really a “high priest” of the religion of atheism, trying to force his atheist worldview on the world. It is obvious he is intent on trying to destroy Christianity, and over the years, we have observed that he is an extremely intolerant person. But what does God do in regard to Dawkins?

“The wicked plots against the just, And gnashes at him with his teeth. The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming” (Psalms 37:12–13).

I really encourage you to read Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell’s more in-depth article on Dawkins’s ideas.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Founder of Calvary Chapel Movement Visits Creation Museum

Pastor Chuck Smith, the founder of the Calvary Chapel network of international churches, spoke to the staff at Answers in Genesis and toured the Creation Museum on Tuesday.

“Pastor Chuck” (as he is known) started his ministry in the 1960s in southern California. Today in America, there are now over 1,000 Calvary Chapels as well as Christian schools and Bible colleges linked to the Calvary Chapel movement. There are also dozens of congregations in the UK (I have spoken at the London church a couple of times), plus Calvary Chapels in other nations. It’s not a denomination but an association of churches. Pastor Chuck was also considered one of the fathers of the so-called “Jesus People” movement, which played a large part in reaching young people (and many adults) with the gospel in the 1960s and 70s.

The original Calvary Chapel is the one in Costa Mesa, California. I have spoken at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa a few times since the 1980s. Pastor Chuck is still the pastor at age 85; though he’s had some serious health challenges in the past few years.

Below are a number of pictures of Pastor Chuck’s visit, including the interview I had with him during our staff meeting. They include two photos of a plaque of recognition that we gave to this Christian pioneer.

Here is a photo taken of Pastor Chuck meeting with an AiG supporter at the museum. She’s the wife of a pastor of a Calvary Chapel church in Ohio who just happened to be in the museum that day.

After I personally guided him through the museum (along with leaders at his church), Pastor Chuck couldn’t say enough about how impressed he was with the quality and the message. Pastor Chuck told me he wished he could bring every one of his Christian school students to the Creation Museum.

As well as touring the Creation Museum, Pastor Chuck visited our design studios down the road, and he had a sneak peak at some of the new exhibits being constructed for the museum (a world-class insect display and dragon exhibit). He also spoke with our Noah’s Ark design team and then visited the property where our full-size Ark is going to be built. See www.ArkEncounter.com for more information.

I encourage you to watch the fascinating interview I had with Pastor Chuck in front of the AiG staff. He speaks about the history of the Calvary Chapel movement—including some of the struggles and the blessings of a movement that has now spread around the world. I urge you to watch the video below:

Update on Christian School Being Besieged

I have an update on a Christian school in South Carolina that came under a massive attack because it teaches biblical creation. A quiz given to a fourth grade class that incorporated AiG’s teachings on dinosaurs got posted to the web and went viral. The atheists went ballistic.

Here is a good summary of the attack on the school—as broadcast by a TV station in the state last night.

The World—Out to Get Your Kids

A recent article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette should be a warning to Christians about how the world is out to “get your kids”—and how Christians need to be vigilant to rescue them from this evil age (Galatians 1:4).

We read the following at the beginning of the article:

During an Advanced Placement biology course in Easton Area High School, Jennifer Estevez’s teacher sped through the large chapter on evolution, focusing on one formula for the AP exam and the basics: survival of the fittest and natural selection.

In those high school years in Northampton County, she also would attend a Baptist leadership retreat where a speaker denounced evolution as false, unproven science.

Seemingly unimportant and even discredited, evolution fell off her radar. So the Easton student, who is a Baptist, arrived at Duquesne University last fall considering herself a creationist, a person who generally believes God created the world as described in the Bible.

But a college biology course convinced her that evolution was valid science with overwhelming evidence that all living things, including humans, evolved most likely from a common ancestor — over a period of millions, even billions, of years longer than that described in Genesis.

This article should be a warning to parents that the dollars you spend to send your children to college are an investment in their eternity, and if you send them to the wrong school, the professors can indoctrinate them in anti-God ideas and undermine all you’ve tried to do as a parent. (By the way, select a college that does stand uncompromisingly on the authority of God’s Word at CreationColleges.com.) All the schools listed have affirmed the Answers in Genesis statement of faith. I also encourage you to read my book Already Compromised to learn more about what is being taught in Christian institutions.

Much of the newspaper article’s remaining content illustrates how secularists don’t want teachers to have academic freedom—they don’t want the belief in evolution and millions of years to be questioned in any way. They want evolution and millions of years protected by legislation and taught as fact to every student. Really, they are trying to legislate it so that every teacher will impose the religion of naturalism or atheism on every student in the public schools.

Sadly, we read this statement in the article:

Many scientists and religious leaders say there’s no conflict in people believing in both a scientific and religious explanation of the origins of humans and other species. Fundamentalist Christians who read Genesis as scientific fact typically reject evolutionary theory.

This is a major problem today—the secularists are using church leaders who compromise God’s Word with the secularist religion of evolution, millions of years, or both for their own anti-God purposes!

The article continues as follows:

Science is firm on its truth. The National Academy of Sciences puts evolution in the category of such scientific facts as the Earth orbiting the sun, living things being made of cells and matter being composed of atoms.

This is the typical false teaching that is confusing historical science and observational (operational) science. It’s an attempt to intimidate people so that they will believe evolution and millions of years as fact. We can look up into space and observe the earth—and the sun. We can look down microscopes and see cells and study them.  But, we can’t observe molecules turning into life, reptiles evolving into birds, etc.

The article then quotes Duquesne University biology professor David Lampe, who organizes the university’s Darwin Day celebration each February. Now, Lampe professes to be a Christian, but all he’s really doing in the long run is helping the secularists. This professor celebrates Darwin, so we shouldn’t be surprised at what the article states:

The continued debate against long-proven scientific principles is a shame, he said, which can do damage to children and their educational prowess.

“Everyone is capable of understanding evolution. There is no reason to dilute or confuse it. Evolution is the greatest thing in science.”

As a Darwinist, he does not want evolution questioned at all. This view should be a warning to all parents that secular institutions (and sadly many Christian institutions) teach the religion of evolution, millions of years, or both as fact, as happens in most of the public school system. Yes, the secularists are out to get your kids!

Read the entire article on the Post-Gazette website.

Atheists Lash Out at a Christian School

Recently, a South Carolina Christian school has come under attack for having biblical creation in its curriculum. The controversy was the result of a parent from the school showing a friend a copy of his daughter’s dinosaur quiz, and that friend took a photo of it and posted it on the Internet. The questions on the quiz were based on an Answers in Genesis DVD that was shown at the school.

Today’s lead article on the Answers in Genesis website covers this issue in more detail—I have provided a link to it below. But before reading the article, take a look at the following quotes to give you an idea of some of the things that have been said by secularists who are undertaking this attack on Blue Ridge Christian Academy. The school received some vicious emails from atheists.

Many atheists are outraged over the fact that a Christian school is teaching biblical creation. Many of them didn’t believe that the question sheet was real, while others called the school irresponsible and ignorant for teaching that God’s Word is trustworthy. Some of the comments have been incredibly nasty. I’ve included a few below to give you an idea (though I’ve left off the web links because these atheist sites often have very objectionable content), with vulgar words removed as indicated by brackets:

Science is not trivial. If the school fails at science THIS dramatically (giving wrong information is worse than giving no information), how good they are with other subjects hardly makes up for it . . . I won’t get into a religious debate here but religion is not science and does not help us know about the natural world. The Bible is a [word removed] textbook on nature. Belief is not scientific and does not belong in a science class.

This science test was originally posted on r/atheism. Snopes.com picked it up thinking it was a hoax. Surely, no one with their wits about them would teach a child these things. Sadly, this is an actual test. This is what passes for “science” in at least one Christian school.

ABSOLUTE [word removed]! THIS IS A SOUTH CAROLINA’S SCHOOL’S SCIENCE QUIZ!

I truly fear for humanity.

See… I knew it…. and it’s from old hammy boy with his dino’s of eden [word removed]… It is a private christian school so you can’t really do anything but what the dad is doing…. and that’s take his daughter out… BUT how can you say that a child’s education is compatible with the standards of other educational institutions when they are being taught this [word removed].

Even my own Facebook post on this controversy was flooded with nasty comments from atheists. These atheists have willfully suppressed the truth that there is a Creator and that His Word is true. We need to sincerely pray that these people will come to repentance and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ before it’s too late.

Please read our lead article on this sad situation.

Homeschool Family Also Under Attack

Another case that Christians should be very concerned about regards the Romeikes, a German homeschool family that is asking for asylum in America. A judge in Tennessee granted them asylum from the persecution they were experiencing in Germany because they were homeschooling their children. However, we should closely monitor how the Obama Administration’s lawyers are appealing that judge’s ruling. A decision against the Romeikes could threaten our ability to bring up our children, including homeschooling them. I encourage you to read yesterday’s lead article on the Romeikes and to pray for this family.

Visit the Garden of Eden?

Well, the Garden of Eden must have been a beautiful place—that is, before sin changed everything! And of course the Flood of Noah’s day totally destroyed the pre-Flood world, including the Garden of Eden.

We can’t visit the Garden of Eden today, but you can visit the spectacular gardens at the Creation Museum instead and, despite a fallen world, get a sense of the beauty of God’s creation.

For many fans of the Creation Museum, the next four weeks are the best time of the year to visit. Not only do they avoid the possibility of some long lines during the summer months, but they can also enjoy the gorgeous gardens that are coming into full bloom. The entire botanical gardens become quite lush.

Here are two photos of the driveway leading into the Creation Museum, showing many tulips and other flowers in bloom:

Here is a couple strolling through the colorful botanical gardens:

Another photo was taken at the back of the AiG offices and near the lake’s gazebo:

Also, we are installing a zip line across the lake in front of the museum. Imagine my surprise last week when I returned from speaking ministry to see a construction worker zip by right in front of the window I was standing at! We’ll share more about the zip lines and their purpose in a future blog post.

DSC_0558

Also, the trails through our botanical gardens are looking better than ever!

Plan your trip at creationmuseum.org. Remember, every ticket is now a two-day ticket, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy yourself over two consecutive days at the museum and our grounds. (By the way, a thank you to Deb Minnard, Marty Minnard, and Mark Looy for sending me the photos they took.)

Today’s Lead Article—A Chilling Case Regarding Religious Freedom

I strongly encourage you to read today’s front-page article on our website about this chilling case involving homeschooling and religious liberty. It summarizes and analyzes the well-known Romeike homeschool case—a  German family that is asking for asylum in America. Although a judge in Tennessee granted them asylum for their persecution in Germany because they were homeschooling their children, we should be monitoring how the Obama Administration’s lawyers are appealing the judge’s ruling. A decision against the Romeikes could threaten our ability to bring up our children, including homeschooling them. To read the article, go to Homeschooled and Now Without a Home to School In?
