Book Tour Wednesday: Interview with Jody Wallace

Interview1. What flavor is your writing?

Salty and a little spicy. It keeps well and doesn’t need refrigeration. I guess it’s like beef jerky.

2. If this book was made into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

I can’t do character casting! Seriously. I don’t even know. The hero is dark haired, dark eyed, medium skin. Perhaps some very scrumptious Indian or Latin actor? There are a lot to choose from. He should be brooding but also witty. The heroine is blonde and pale skinned. That describes a lot of leading ladies, but not a terribly goofy one – she’s a smart, no-nonsense doctor. So not...who’s that gal...Jennifer Lawrence. She’s great but doesn’t yet have a lot of gravitas.

3. What is your favorite scene in TRAITOR?

I love the scenes where the protagonists are interacting with Ship, the sentient vessel. Ship is great fun to write. I also love this one scene at the end where... Well, that would be spoiling things but the heroine gets to be a total badass, and I don’t mean that in a “she tosses her hair and makes a sassy comment” way.
4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I just finished a Courtney Milan Regency – been listening to her on audio because 2015 involved a lot of traveling for me. I also finished Veronica Scott’s science fiction romance Star Cruise: Marooned. On my Kindle I’ve just opened Jennifer’ Estep’s Fandemic, and I’m going to have to resist staying up all night to read it. I just adore her Bigtime series!

5. What are you working on now?

This interview! And the next book in the Maelstrom Chronicles. And I believe in about 3 seconds I am going to work on cleaning up cat barf. So I hear.

Think Fast Questions
Coffee or tea?

Coffee in the mornings, herbal tea in the afternoons.

Cats or dogs?

CATS SO MUCH CATS even barfing ones.

Series or standalone?

Sure, I’ll read that. What is it? Series? Standalone? I don’t care.

Winter or summer?

Neither. Early spring or medium to late fall. But if I had to pick, it being summer and a 110 degree heat index right now, I’d pick winter.

Print or e-book?

I prefer e-books. I can enlarge the font as needed and switch between books with the flip of a finger without breaking my spine carrying around boxes of paperbacks. Why, yes, I did just buy a house and move a billion hardcopy books between abodes this month.
Book Blurb Maelstrom Chronicles, Book Two

Captain Nikolas EstherVorn is a traitor. Or so it was decreed after Niko disobeyed protocol while trying to save Earth from other-dimensional creatures. Stuck in a prison cell, the last thing he needs is to be in close proximity to sexy-as-sin Dr. Sarah CallenJoseph. Not with him damn near ready to break out just to get to her.

Niko's desire isn't quite his own…and Sarah can prove it. He—along with the other soldiers on the disastrous mission—were drugged with some kind of toxin. Niko has no clue how the drug got into his body or why, but Sarah suspects there’s a link between the toxin and the fertility crisis of Shipborn humans.

To investigate is forbidden. But as lust becomes something deeper, binding them together in a way neither expected, Niko and Sarah must battle time—and their superiors—to uncover the secret that could save humanity...or destroy it.

Author Tuesday: Interview with Diane Burton

Interview1. What flavor is your writing?

Action-packed adventure. If you're asking about heat level, I'd say sensual, but not too explicit.

2. If The Protector was made into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

For Rissa: Paula Patton (from MI3: Ghost Protocol) if she were about three inches taller; she can kick butt. For Dillan, Chris Pratt (from Guardians of the Galaxy) funny, self-effacing, can kick butt when necessary.

3. What is your favorite scene in The Protector?

When Dillan takes Rissa on vacation (to get her away from danger) to a rainforest. They go up above the canopy (in harnesses) and she discovers how much fun it is to swing from platform to platform and use a zipline. It shows a different side of the super-serious, never-had-fun Rissa. (I included that scene as the excerpt for this post.)
4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I have so many books in my TBR pile (actually, on my Kindle) I'll have to live another 40 years or more to finish. But I'll keep adding more books so maybe I'll have to live forever. LOL I just finished A Killer Past by Maris Soule. What an edge-of-your-seat thriller about a 74-year-old kick-butt heroine with a secret past. Next up is Reunited (Nogiku series) by S.J. Pajonas. It's Japanese-culture post-apocalypse with hope. I finished the first two in the series and I'm hooked. And then there's . . . Too many books, so little time.

5. What are you working on now?

The second book in my Alex O'Hara novels, called The Case of the Fabulous Fiancé. Alex is a (female) P.I. who is always getting into scrapes. She lives in a fictitious Lake Michigan resort town (like I do) and I'm having a great time including some of my favorite places for the setting. Of course, her cohort in crime (so to speak) is to-die-for Nick Palzetti, who comes in and out of her life. It will come out in October.

The book that came out last week is the third book in my Outer Rim series. Like the others in the series, it's a stand-alone book with recurring characters. You don't have to read the other books (although I hope you will) to enjoy this one. The Protector takes place on the frontier of space and features a kick-butt heroine and the man who is smart enough to love her. (Have you noticed how often I say "kick-butt"? I guess it's because that's the kind of heroine I love.)

After tavern owner Rissa Dix rescues two girls from a slave ship, she must rally the townsfolk to prevent traffickers from raiding the frontier colony. She’s met with apathy and disbelief. Because she lost her own baby to traffickers, she’s determined that no other mother will suffer the same heartache. Industrialist heir Dillan Rusteran aids her in rescuing more children. Little do they know they’re about to tangle with a trafficking ring that puts Rissa in danger. Dillan’s loved her for years despite her claim she’s too old for him. As they fight the traffickers, will she finally see him in a new light?

The Protector is available at Amazon ~ Kobo ~ Smashwords ~ Barnes and Noble ~ iTunes.
ExcerptWhen the guide demonstrated how they were to go up, Rissa gaped at Dillan in panic. “No way.”

“You can do it, sweetheart. I’ll be right with you.” He helped her into the harness then tightened the straps around her upper thighs.

“Watch it, Rusteran.”

He grinned. “Oh, I am.”

She swatted his shoulder. “I meant watch your hands. No funny business.”

“Wouldn’t think of it.”

The guide checked both their harnesses then showed Rissa how to rise. After a couple of hesitant starts, she quickly got the hang of it and soon they reached the platform. As she looked around, across the top of the canopy, her eyes widened in delight.

“I can’t believe what you can see up here. Oh. My. Stars.”

“Thought you might like it.”

“Like it. I love it. Thank you so much for bringing me up here.”

“There’s more to see,” the guide said. “Follow me.” He pushed off the platform, then using the zip-line, sailed across to another platform a hundred meters away.

Again, Rissa looked at Dillan in panic. She shook her head. “I can’t.”

“Sure you can. Go.” He pushed her off the platform.

“You are a bas-tard.” She screamed for the first ten meters then began to laugh. The guide caught her at the next platform. As soon as Dillan caught up, she grabbed his arm. “I want to do it again.”

Her eyes sparkling with delight filled him with joy.

They rode the cable for several more loops until the guide said it was time to go down. He reminded Rissa how to use the brake.

She turned to Dillan. “How fast can I go?”

“As fast as you want.” He gave her a smacking kiss. “Go for it, sweetheart.”

She watched the guide zip down.

“Uh, I’m not sure I can go that fast.”

“You know how to use the brake. The guide will catch you at the bottom.”

After a tentative start and stop, she looked up at him. “Here goes.” She scrunched her eyes shut then let go of the brake.

Her scream scared all the birds out of the trees.

The guide was helping her out of the harness when Dillan zipped down. As soon as he landed, she flung her arms around his neck. “That was so exciting. I thought my heart would fly out of my chest. Can we do it again?”

Author Thursday: Interview with Carmen Fox

Interview1. What flavor is your writing?

I write what I read. Books that mix genres, with plenty of humor hits.

2. If Guarded was made into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

Ivy, my main character, would be played by someone with the comic timing of Drew Barrymore, the intensity and sass of Jessica Alba, and the sex appeal of Jessica Rabbit. Florian, her charming side-kick, already lives inside Matt Bomer. Waylon would be done proud by Colin Farrell or Hugh Jackman, Parker would look good on Chris O'Donnell, and I can see Jonny Lee Miller or Jesse Williams giving us an excellent Greg.

As an aside, this started off as a difficult question. Now I'm kind of bummed that this movie is never going to happen.
3. What is your favorite scene in Guarded?

My writing partner would pick a funny scene, but the exchange that resonates most with me happens almost at the end, when Ivy leaves. A single look says so much more than words can.

4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I recently compiled a collection of first chapters by nearly a dozen great authors of the paranormal genre. Many of these books have made it onto my tbr pile, with the awesomely witty Margo Bond Collins leading the pack.

5. What are you working on now?

My next project is the sequel to Guarded. Florian (Matt Bomer) takes the lead this time, and he's a complicated character. He's all charm and wit on the outside, but inside he's scared of not being accepted for who he truly is. What makes writing him so challenging is that he's not an alpha male, at least not at first. Some might see this book as a departure from Guarded, but his and Ivy's stories are not dissimilar.
LinksYou can find out more about Carmen at these links:
Website: www.carmen-fox.comTwitter: @authorcarmenfoxFacebookBook Blurb Ivy’s neighbors have a secret. They aren’t human. But Ivy has a secret, too. She knows. As long as everyone keeps quiet, she’s happy working as a P.I. by day and chillaxing with her BFF Florian, a vampire, by night. When a routine pickup drops her in the middle of a murder, her two worlds collide. While Florian knows how to throw a punch, deep down he's a softie. His idea of scary? Running out of hair product. It’s time Ivy faced facts. Even with a vampire on stand-by, one gal can only kick so many asses.

For help, she must put her faith in others. A human, who might just be the one. A demon, who will, for a price, open the doors to her heritage. And a werewolf, who wants to protect her from herself.

Torn between these men, Ivy must tread carefully, because one wants her heart, one wants her body, and one wants her dead.

Guarded is available at Amazon.
ExcerptParker placed both elbows on the table, rested his chin on one hand and regarded me for a moment. “So, Ivy. A P.I., eh?” He smacked his lips. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but you don’t exactly look like Philip Marlowe.”

“Your point being?” I squinted.

“You’re tiny. I mean, I’m sure you can take care of yourself. What if you need to overpower a 200-pound man, though? Do you at least know how to shoot your gun?”

“Shoot?” I scrunched my nose. “Yes. Aim and hit the target? Not so much. The last guy who made fun of my size still walks with a limp.”

“See, you hit one target right.” His eyes glinted.

I lifted my gaze. “I was aiming for his groin.” I squished my cupcake and shook my head. “No, I don’t carry a gun. And believe it or not, my size is an advantage. If you were an unfaithful husband and I followed you to a bar, trust me, I’d go unnoticed among the usual throng of people.”

Parker’s grin turned mischievous. “Well, Veronica Mars, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I’d notice you.” He sipped his coffee. “If I was an unfaithful husband, that is.”
About the Author
Carmen lives in the south of England with her beloved tea maker and a stuffed sheep called Fergus. An avid reader since childhood, she caught the writing bug when her Nana asked her to write a story. She also has a law degree, studied physics for a few years, dabbled in marketing and human resources, and speaks native-level German and fluent Geek. Her preferred niches of geekdom are tabletop games, comics, sci-fi and fantasy.

She writes about smart women with sassitude, about pretty cool guys too, and will chase that plot twist, no matter how elusive.

Expect to be kept guessing.

Author Tuesday: Interview with Suzanne M. Sabol

Interview1. What flavor is your writing?

I write darkly intense books. They tend to be on the graphic side with sarcasm as one of the main ingredients. I’m funny, in a vicious and almost fatalistic kind of way. I like to keep things moving and the pace quick so that you don’t have time to recover from the first punch before I hit you with the second and the third.

2. If this book was made into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

Dahlia – this would have to be Natalie Dormer (from GoT). She’s got that look that could see right through you and bring a man to his knees.
Patrick – Henry Cavill. He has that cool sophistication that embodies Patrick.
Dean – Channing Tatum is a great fit for Dean’s bulky masculinity. Not to mention that not everyone can pull off completely bald and still make a girl quack in her boots. I think Channing Tatum could do it.
3. What is your favorite scene in Emerald Fire?

In Emerald Fire, there’s a scene in one of Patrick’s clubs where Dahlia and Alex are killing some zombies. The interaction between Dahlia, Alex, and the new comer – Isidro – are some of my favorite. I love that Isidro doesn’t quite know what to do with Dahlia and that she isn’t buying any of his charm.

4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

There is a lot of Sherrilyn Kenyon on my TBR pile. I read her League series but I just started her Dark Hunter series and I might be in L-O-V-E.

5. What are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on a few things, The Blushing Death #7, a new series set in an alternate Demon Universe. I’m really excited about that one and just the world I’ve created for it. Finally, I’m working on a paranormal dystopian series and working the kinks out of that one.

As the stakes become higher with each new threat, their growing power and Dahlia’s magical ability can’t be ignored by the vampire ruling council.

As bodies start piling up around Columbus and a dark magic makes its presence known, a high-ranking vampire board member invades Dahlia’s territory. A threat? A spy? Isidro’s dark eyes and intentions are dangerous. With the world closing in around them and the threat to their very existence growing, Dahlia, Patrick, and Dean move to solidify their magical bonds. But Baba Yaga wants her due and has plans for Dahlia all her own. Dahlia may be able to survive an army of zombies, but can she out strategize a millennia-old witch and survive with everyone intact?

Author Thursday: Interview with Red L. Jameson

Interview1. What flavor is your writing?

Oh, I love this question and have never been asked! I would say my writing is sweet and hot, like dark chocolate with spicy pepper in it.

2. If this book was made into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

Easy answer! At least for my hero, Michael Cameron. He’s Chris Hemsworth. Any time I felt a bit lost while writing Michael, I’d look at images of Hemsworth and just know how he felt and thought.

But as for my heroine, Gabby Murray, I had a harder time picking her out. Finally I settled on model Hannah Davis.
3. What is your favorite scene in Duchess of Mine?

Hmm, well, that’s a toughie. I’m not sure I have a favorite-favorite, but here’s an excerpt from a scene where my hero and heroine are getting to know each other:
“So,” his smile waned, “the point of that long story is there are some men who wouldn’t want ye to be invisible, wouldn’t want ye to not have a say. That’s a double negative sentence, ‘tisn’t it?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It does. I asked Polymnia to tutor me with grammar, and I’m really tryin’ to sound—”

“Absolutely perfect, Michael. You sounded perfect.”

“Nay.”

“Yes.”

“Nay.”

“Highlander—”

“Nay, it didn’t.”

“Oh, shut u—”

“Did ye almost tell me to shut up?”

She covered her mouth with her fingers. “I’m sorry, but I nearly did.”

“Ye more or less told me to shut up.” He frowned, but she noticed his dark hazel eyes twinkling.

“Again, terribly sorry about that.” She folded her hands together. “But I well-nigh did.”

“Was the nigh for my sake, being I’m a thousand years old?”

“Of course it was, you fossil. As I was saying, your sentence was perfect. I loved it. And if you try to correct it, I’ll—”

“You’ll do what?” Now, he held a tiny smile as he leaned closer, domineering over her.

She pushed against his massive chest, but he wouldn’t budge, which—oddly enough—made her laugh. “You must stop this, Michael. I’m giving you fair warning.”

He scooted even closer, towering even more over her. “What are ye goin’ to do, Gabby?” His voice was low and turned into velvet.

She shook her head once. “I’m warning you…”

“Aye. But ye’d better follow through with yer threat.”

She sighed as if annoyed, to which she wasn’t in the least. “Very well then.”

He started to smile even wider, but then she leaned closer. He stilled as she tilted her head just so, her visage even with his neck. He wore a modern shirtfront with a blue cravat that matched his dapper kilt. However, his collar wasn’t too high and revealed a wildly beating vein. His scent enveloped her as she glided her nose against that pumping vein. His breath hitched. Oh, she liked this game. Perhaps loved it a little.

Then she bit him right on that vulnerable mark where her nose had been. She’d masticated hard enough for him to draw away, sucking in a breath.

She batted her eyes and smiled coyly. “I did warn you.”

“Vicious wee thing, aren’t ye?” he whispered, holding his hand over her bite mark. “Why, I have in mind to take ye over my knee and spank ye.”
4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I read three to four books at the same time. I’m reading Nora Robert’s Whiskey Beach and Kresley Cole’s Untouchable as well as a non-fiction book by Christopher Vogler.

5. What are you working on now?

I’m switching gears and finishing a paranormal novel that will be the start of a new series. I’m so excited about it that if I get started talking about the series or the book I’m prone to carrying on and on and on and—gosh, there’ll be no stopping me. I’m scary right now with how much I can talk about it, so I’ll stop here.

But nothing could have readied him for angelic Gabriella Murray, the Duchess of Northampton. She’s a beautiful, lovely, gorgeous—did he mention just how bonny Gabby is?—duchess, and he’s a lowly Scot. How is he going to solve the missing children case the muses have given him with such a distracting woman?

Book Tour Tuesday: Dragon's Guide to Slaying Virgins

Interview1. What flavor is your writing?

It’s evolved quite a bit in a short period of time. I started off as PNR and have become Fantasy that can be really sexy at times. I’ve also had my work called feminist fairy tales quite a bit.

2. If this book was made into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

Wow, this is a REALLY hard question. Probably as follows.

Morgan - Anne Hathaway
Heather - China Anne McClain (If you don’t know who she is, she is totally one to watch)
Young - Douglas Booth
Vallen - Theo James
3. What is your favorite scene in Dragon's Guide to Slaying Virgins?

My personal favorite is a battle scene where the characters are defending the City of Maht. You really get so see Morgan in some of her finest heroine moments. From protecting people she loves to throwing herself off giant Dwarven war machines hundreds of feet above the ground.

4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I’m in love with Mimi Jean Pamfiloff’s King series and Mermen series. They are dark, gritty and sexy as hell. Her new Mac story releases its first book this fall and I can hardly wait.

Along with that I have: Thief of Songs by MCA Hogarth, Dragon Fall by Katie MacAlister due out this summer, and High Heels in New York by AV Scott.

5. What are you working on now?

Oh my, well Bunny Be Were is due out this fall. It’s a whole new series I’m starting. It’s a bit grittier and darker. More of an Urban Fantasy.

I’m also working on this year’s holiday book and my super-secret YA project.

Excerpt“And like you, I lost the love of my life.” He reached up and absently stroked my hair down my back.

“Does it get easier and hurt less with time?” I asked.

“Yes, but it can take a very long time.” I closed my eyes at his words. I could picture Simon’s smiling face, his red hair falling free of its pony tail so that strands fell in his face. His eyes were so dark they were almost black, but they sparkled so when he smiled. A tear ran down my cheek. Vallen moved his hand and reached up to wipe it away. “I promise there will be justice for what Avery has done to you.”

I tried to smile, knowing he meant it. Right now, though, I didn’t want to think about Avery. “Thank you,” I whispered.

There was a knock on the door and then Young opened it without waiting for any word from us. He took one look at the two of us wrapped in each other’s arms and blushed clear through his scalp. He averted his gaze and walked close enough to set the clothes down on the chair. “I’m sorry, I didn’t expect… You and the Lady… and I’m leaving.” He grabbed the tray and disappeared back out the door before we could correct his misconception.

Vallen growled and lowered his arms from around me. “I’m sorry. He has the wrong idea and it’s my fault. I’ll go find him and explain.” He shifted and winced.

“Wait. You shouldn’t be up yet. I can go,” I offered.

He shook his head. “This is my fault.” With a deep breath he pushed himself out of bed and groaned in pain.

Without meaning to I raked my eyes over him. Every inch of his body was covered in thick muscle. He wasn’t bulging, but just looking at him you knew he was powerful. His body was covered in scars and bandages that told the tales of a life lived in the service of others. His dark hair had blue streaks in it, reminding me of a Fairy. His backside was like no backside I had ever seen in person. It looked like it should be made of stone and attached to a statue in Queen Mab’s palace. He turned, giving me full view of his manhood. I had always heard they grew when excited, but with his there in plain view I couldn’t imagine it growing larger, as it was already more than I would have ever known what to do with. He cleared his throat and my eyes flew up to meet his gaze. “My Lady, I believe my eyes are up here.”

I blushed and tugged the blankets over my head, wanting in that very moment to die after being caught staring. He must have finished dressing because I heard him cross the room, followed by the sounds of the door opening and closing. Only after my breathing had returned to normal did I push the blankets off of my head and struggle to the side of the bed.

Author Thursday: Interview with Jane S. Morrisey

Today's guest is paranormal romance author Jane S. Morrisey, and she's talking about Circle of Dreams.

1. What flavor is your writing?

I like to think of flavor in terms of genre and tone. I’m squarely in the paranormal romance genre, which I love. One thing I love about writing romance is that the story rests in that first blush of connection, that fun, flirty place where lust and pheromones drive us into opening up in ways we don’t in other places in our lives. In normal life, this can be an incredible, crazy and titillating time. Then add in a little magic, some psychic powers and a world where the rules are a bit different than ours and there is so much fun to be had. In the paranormal, we have a free pass to explore the fantastical part of that spark of connection amplified in all kinds of interesting ways. I like to play with the edges of what that connection can be.

In terms of tone, I like to write in multiple points of view, which can be tricky. I’ve had many conversations with my editor about it and am still trying to work out the best way to do this. As a reader, I love being able to get inside the heads of different characters. It makes me feel like I can get up close and intimate with the heart beat of the story and the breath of the characters. But lest that be too serious, I also try to interject humor where appropriate and lightness to juxtapose the often perilous situations in which my characters find themselves.
2. If your book was made into a move, who would you cast to play the characters?

Bradley Cooper would make a smashing hero out of shape shifting Cole who has to fight both for his life and his heroine’s. Bri, would be well portrayed by Scarlet Johansson. She is tough, smart and takes everything I’ve thrown at her in stride; emerging even stronger on the other side.

3. What is your favorite scene in Circle of Dreams?

Without giving too much away, one of my favorite scenes, is when Bri and Cole are forced to strike out on their own through an unforgiving forest with the enemy hot on their trail. Not only does this scene, or series of scenes, allow them to grow closer emotionally, but it also highlights their unique and compatible strengths.

4. What are you reading now?

I am reading Shards of Hope by Nalani Singh. This is the latest in her Psy-Changling Series. I cannot get enough of this series, or really any book that she has written.

5. What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on editing the third book in the Quytel Series, Circle of the Pack, and starting the fifth book.

His investigation of a string of mysterious murders throws him into the dangerous world of the Quytel and leads him straight to Brianna Doherty’s door. Bri is plagued by vicious nightmares of death and pain that leave her wondering about her own history.

When her home is under siege, an enigmatic stranger appears out of nowhere to save her. Thrown together in a tangle of desire and danger, they are pulled deeper into the secretive world of the Quytel, an ancient order charged with maintaining the balance of psychic and paranormal power on earth. Staying one step ahead of those who would destroy them, they struggle to unravel the truth of Bri’s past and her family legacy. As her relationship with Cole grows stronger, the reality of who Bri is threatens to tear them apart.

Circle of Dreams is now available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, Kobo, ARe, and Smashwords. View the Circle of Dreams book trailer.
I love romance, magic, and the poetry of words. Even as a child I wanted to be a writer. When I was eleven, a friend and I wrote a little book of short stories about mermaids that we illustrated ourselves. It was quite a thriller, as you might imagine. When I was a teenager I loved to read poetry and fantasize about being a writer, but I had no idea what to write. In college I finally took a creative writing class and embarked on my first romance story…somehow it turned into a murder mystery which freaked me out a little and I put writing on hold for about ten years. But that little voice in the back of my mind wouldn’t let me forget my dream, although at the time it felt more like a nagging urge.

Starting my first novel was rough going. It took a while to wrangle myself into a writing schedule and build enough confidence to trust the story and my characters, but when I hit my stride it was a thing of beauty. Embarking on this strange journey has led me into other worlds and on wild adventures. It took many editors and several conversations with friends and family, and a particularly memorable bit of coaxing from a dear friend, before I felt ready to share my stories. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I’ve loved writing them.

Author Thursday: Spotlight and Review of The Sweetest Dare by Leigh Ellwood

Today I'm talking about The Sweetest Dare, currently on tour with Bewitching Book Tours. At the end of the tour one lucky reader will win his or her choice of 2 eBooks from the ARe Books imprints (Out For You, Bad Boys, Perfect Strangers, Alpha), so be sure to enter the giveaway!
Sugar's sweet, but sex tastes better…

Kit Cheever is more than eager to welcome her new co-worker, Sidney Campbell, to Tish’s Riches, the best chocolate shop in Virginia. While the long days on the job hardly exhaust them for long nights of play, Sidney hopes for more in their relationship than candy-coated orgasms. Is dinner out too much to ask?

Kit would oblige, but she likes her privacy. The people of Dareville don’t need to know she and Sidney are anything more than co-workers. Why be “out” when it’s so much hotter and safer indoors?

Kit won’t even hold her hand in public, which upsets Sidney. She’s not asking Kit to march in a parade, just to acknowledge her feelings to the people she loves. What will it take to get Kit out of the closet and into Sidney’s heart?

The Sweetest Dare is now available from ARe.
Excerpt“Nice getup,” Kit said, and twirled her finger downward to guide Sidney to move away. “I have to see the shoes.”

Sidney laughed and offered the full model strut. She whirled around and sashayed along the bar a few steps, wiggling her slim hips, then returned with an exaggerated en pointe of one high-top sneaker, which was actually designed to look like a red Uno playing card.

“How come they don’t match?” Couldn’t be too difficult to find checkerboard-patterned shoes.

“The shoes that go with this outfit are worn out. I haven’t had time to make another pair.”

“Really? You don’t buy these?” Kit asked. Baking, sewing…this girl was a one-woman craft bazaar.

Sidney smiled. “What can I say? I’m good with a glue gun and a pastry bag, so long as I don’t get them mixed up.”

“Cool. Uh, what brings you here?” Did Sidney know this was a lesbian bar? The décor didn’t outright advertise it—no rainbow bunting or pink triangle beer coasters. Yeah, framed posters of semi-nude women hung on the walls, but Kit saw those at other places.

“I heard this was the best place to meet women in town. Rather, close to town. We’re kind of in between Dareville and the beach, huh?”

“Yeah. We were thinking of calling it West Vagina.”

Sidney snorted up a sip of her drink. “You have to warn me when you make a joke like that.” She waved over the bartender for some napkins.

She attracted many an appreciative stare from other patrons, too, leaving Kit to think of the right words to get Sidney to a more secluded place to chat.

Luckily, though, Sidney shared her idea. “This music is so damn loud, how do you stand it?” she called out. “Wanna sit out on the patio?”

Kit nodded, and a minute later they found two Adirondack chairs on the concrete, screened-in patio that abutted the alleyway behind the club. Kit had heard, when the building had housed an Italian restaurant, this area served as a smoking lounge for the wait staff. Nobody lit up here now due to new laws, but the folks at the Den tried their best to make the patio look pretty. Fake palms trees wrapped with white twinkle lights adorned each corner, and standing space heaters kept the area comfortable. Though no door separated them from the club interior, Kit noticed that the distance did mute the music’s volume to a low, steady boom.

“What were you drinking? Refill’s on me,” Sidney offered, and flagged down a server making the round to others lounging on the patio.

“You don’t have to do that, I’m good.”

Sidney smirked away Kit’s reluctance. “Please. I’m a working woman now. I can afford it,” she said with a wink. Kit couldn’t argue with that.

“I usually get the Key Lime Pie martini. It’s their signature drink.”

“Ooh, that sounds good. Two, please,” Sidney told the waitress, and Kit watched the silent exchange between them that followed. Well, she counted the seconds the waitress lingered, shuffling backward with her eye on Sidney, before finally retreating to the bar to place their orders. Petite blonde with Eighties fetish proved tonight’s favorite flavor, and Sidney no doubt tempted many an appetite. Kit placed a hand on her growling stomach.

Sidney crossed her legs and turned in her seat, squeezing her arms close to her body as though to preserve warmth. “How does a key lime drink become the specialty of the house here? Rather unusual choice.”

“Not really. The person who owns the Den is from South Florida. She used to run a lesbian bar down there. I guess they’re a dime a dozen, so she came up here to find a captive audience. Before that she taught English at some college, so that’s where the Woolf came from.” Kit crooked her head toward a poster of Virginia Woolf’s profile on the brick wall. Several artistic renditions of the famed author decorated the establishment, in places where one didn’t find the semi-nudes.

“I would love to have had a place like this in Wyoming to go to.”

“Yeah?” Images of gorgeous women in tight blue jeans, bouncing in saddles as the horses they straddled galloped in some wide prairie, filled Kit’s mind. One rarely ran into country girls in town, and suddenly Kit pictured Sidney in a Stetson the color of her geektastic shoes.

Sidney in a cowgirl hat, stripped down to a Rubik-colored thong, straddled over her hips and bucking with one hand in the air… yee-haw.
Robyn's ReviewDisclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was super excited when I saw the tour information for The Sweetest Dare, because F/F romance can be hard to find. (Dammit, mainstream romance industry! Why don't you love F/F romance?!) Then I read the blurb and knew I had to review this book, because lesbians and bakeries are extremely relevant to my interests. I needed this book in my life.

Because omg you guys, Sidney is a bisexual pastry chef with glasses and custom geek chucks. I'm in love. Where do I find one? And where do I find the gay bar mentioned in the excerpt, because I need Key Lime Pie margaritas in my life too.

I loved just about everything in The Sweetest Dare--the love scenes were spicy, I was emotionally invested in the characters, and the setting was vivid and appealed to my inner Food Network addict. (Kit wants a food truck. I have watched every season of The Great Food Truck Race.) My only nitpicks are that this is a novella, and one of the challenges of writing/reading novellas is that you have to pack a lot of action into a small word count. This tends to result in, "Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my giant toolbox full of sex toys, WHEE!" And as a reader I had a feeling of "Wait, what just happened? Did I miss a transition?", which was then followed by "DO NOT PUT THE MAPLE SYRUP THERE! YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THAT'S BEEN!"

Seriously. Aunt Jemima does not approve.

But I digress. I wanted a bit more about Kit and the personal reasons behind her reluctance to come out, and a bit more time on the relationship development between Kit and Sid, but overall this was a great read. The ending is super adorable and left me with a happy smile. :) I'm definitely adding more Leigh Ellwood to my TBR list.

Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars (or Key Lime Pie margaritas)
