ExcerptOnly a fool would split hairs with a god, least of all the goddess of death, but Ellaeva would count herself such a fool and consider it worth it—if she could get away with it.

She leaned across the knife-scarred timber of the tavern table.

“Are you sure?” she asked, her tone even and barely loud enough to be audible over the noise of the flute and the zither. Her work on behalf of the goddess Ahura, adjudicating the small war here in Dayhl, could only be abandoned in favour of a greater threat. If she was going to chase off after the man who killed her parents, she needed to be sure her arguments stacked up. The pursuit of personal justice wouldn’t be enough.

Is it justice or revenge?

No time to worry about that now. She tugged her black hood farther down over her infamous face, even though deep shadows blanketed the common room corner. She’d chosen a table far from the tallow candles mounted in their stag-horn chandeliers. There was no point taking chances; the black hair and porcelain skin of a Tembran would be remarked here among the platinum-haired Dayhlish. Besides, someone might recognise her.

“In Ahlleyn, sure as the spring comes after winter, Holiness.” The narrow-faced man across from her grinned, baring teeth more brown than yellow. The acrid smoke from the candles didn’t cover his pungent breath.

She half-stood, making an urgent, negating gesture as she glanced around, but the hubbub of chatter from the patrons and the music covered his slip. No one even glanced their way. On the far side of the room, away from the two blazing hearths, tables were pushed aside for dancing. She dropped back into her seat, her black robes fluttering around her booted feet.
About the Author
Ciara Ballintyne grew up on a steady diet of adult epic fantasy from the age of nine, leaving her with a rather confused outlook on life – she believes the good guys should always win, but knows they often don’t. She is an oxymoron; an idealistic cynic.

She began her first attempts at the craft of writing in 1992, culminating in the publication of her debut work, Confronting the Demon, in 2013. Her first book to be published with Evolved Publishing is In the Company of the Dead.

She holds degrees in law and accounting, and is a practising financial services lawyer. In her spare time, she speculates about taking over the world – how hard can it really be? If she could be anything, she’d choose a dragon, but if she is honest she shares more in common with Dr. Gregory House of House M.D. – both the good and the bad. She is a browncoat, a saltgunner, a Whedonite, a Sherlockian, a Ringer and a Whovian… OK, most major geek fandoms. Her alignment is chaotic good. She is an INTJ.

Ciara lives in Sydney, Australia, with her husband, her two daughters, and a growing menagerie of animals that unfortunately includes no dragons.

Release Day Blitz: Interview with Bonnie Gill

Interview1. What inspired this book?

I was watching a show on the Jersey Devil and thought how much fun it would be to have a main character change into one. Another movie that inspired me was Tommy Boy.

2. What was the most difficult part about working on this book?

Oooo. I think it was making sure the humor didn’t get too twisted or dark. I have a tendency to get carried away.

3. Who is your favorite character in this book?

I love Abby. She has a big heart and tends to overreact. No matter what I threw at her, she survived and was a trooper.
4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I have a whole bookcase of TBRs. I mainly read Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, or Scifi romance. I read to escape real life.

5. What are you working on now?

I’m working on the second L.A.M.P.S. novel called Pursuing The Light. Here is the blurb:
L.A.M.P.S. hunter Leif Gunther has a system for keeping order in his life while hunting Cryptids. He enjoys the solitude and quiet the job provides. Until a chatty redhead is assigned to assist him in his quest for the vicious Sheepsquatch in West Virginia and his systemized life gets turned upside down.

Cleaning up after Cryptids is not Holly McClure’s favorite job. She’d rather be hunting like her four brothers. But when she finds evidence that a pack of Abbagoochie’s are present an opportunity presents itself and she seizes it with both hands. Not to mention she gets to be pared up with the strong silent Leif Gunther, the man she’s been crushing on for the last five years.

Leif just has three rules. Keep quiet, stay out of my way, and don’t touch my stuff. Too bad Holly can’t help breaking them repeatedly. Drawn together by the chase, Leif and Holly find that if they work together they make a great hunting team and their passion grows as they pursue their prey.

Eolyn lunged at Akmael, hand raised to strike him. He caught her wrist in a vice-like grip that gave pause to her fury.

In the silence that followed, Akmael measured the heat under Eolyn’s skin, the rhythm of her pulse, the condensation of her breath against the cool night air.

“Eolyn.” He did not bother to hide the note of surprised hope in his voice. “Are you jealous?”

She wrenched free of his hold. “Your magic is a disgrace! You have allowed your abilities to be twisted to foul ends. Dragon did not grant us these powers to invoke fear or take advantage of those weaker than ourselves. And our festivals are meant to celebrate the heritage of Moisehén, not to reinforce your authority, much less your sexual prowess.”

“That may be the case, but your question about the third night of Bel-Aethne…It did not arise out of concern for the proper interpretation and practice of magic. Did it?”

Eolyn cheeks flushed, but she lifted her chin. “There is no place for jealousy in a maga’s heart.”

Akmael did not let her finish. He caught her lips in his. In an instant the spark granted to them as adolescents was reignited. Akmael wrapped his arms around her, inhaling her honey and wood aroma, intertwining his fingers in her silky hair, exploring every delicate contour of her face and throat. The force of his passion pushed her back against the raw trunk of a large tree. His hands traveled insatiable over the landscape of her body, at once familiar and new.

Book Tour: Interview with Tabitha Lord

Interview1. What inspired this book?

I often joke that I write science fiction because I’ve been a Star Wars fan since I was 7 years old! But seriously, I’ve loved the sci-fi genre my entire life, so when I finally started writing fiction, I knew this is where I would start. When I want to be inspired, to play with possibilities, to ask what if, and then create brand new worlds where I can explore the answers, my imagination goes straight to sci-fi. For me, this genre is also a place to consider serious, meaningful issues in a different context, slightly removed from the real world.

With Horizon, I had two distinct parts of a story floating in my head. The first was the crash sequence. It was more basic at the time of its inception – just a young man who crash-lands on a planet, and a young woman, in some kind of trouble, who saves his life. The second part was more complex. I was playing with the idea of what would happen if one segment of an already small isolated population evolved differently (either naturally or by design) from the other. What if some had gifts that enabled them to imagine a different kind of future for themselves and their world? What if they were empathic and could sense each other’s emotions and thoughts? What if some of them could heal with their mind? How would the unchanged people feel about their neighbors? It created such an interesting premise I knew I had to find a way to make it into a story.

2. What was the most difficult part about working on this book?

From a craft point of view, I really loved writing the action scenes and some of the more intense dialogue sequences. Those came easily to me. My challenge was, and still is, world building without info dumping. I generally have to toss everything on the page and then, through the editing process, work to subtly weave in crucial information and descriptions rather than knock readers over the head with it.
3. Who is your favorite character in this book?

I definitely have a book boyfriend crush on Derek!

4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I’m a contributing writer for a blog called Book Club Babble, and I have the pleasure of interviewing some amazing authors and reviewing some fabulous books. Right now I am reading The Two-Family House, the debut novel by Lynda Cohen Loigman who I’ll be interviewing later this month. It’s fabulous. I’m reading, and thoroughly enjoying, an anthology titled B is for Broken, edited by Rhonda Parrish. And I’ve just finished Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty for one of my book clubs. On any given week, I usually have two or three books on my night table!

5. What are you working on now?

I’m currently drafting Horizon’s sequel. It’s about one third of the way finished, with the rest pretty well outlined. In Horizon, Caeli leaves her world just as it’s on the brink of another major uprising. In the second book, she’ll return and rejoin the resistance movement. I also have the bones of a thriller outlined, a few short stories swirling, and an idea for a historical fiction novel. Although I love writing sci-fi, I’m eager to venture into different genres.

Think Fast Questions
Sweet or spicy? Sweet – especially if it’s chocolate.

Hot or cold? Hot – I’ll take sand and sun over snow any day.

Wine or beer? Wine - although beer’s good by the beach.

Series or standalone? Series - if I love it, I want more.

Print or e-book? Print – but the e-book is good for stuff I don’t want the kids to see!

Book Info Caeli Crys isn’t living—she’s surviving. On the run after the genocide of her empathic people, she witnesses a spaceship crash near her hidden camp. When she feels the injured pilot suffering from miles away, she can’t help but risk discovery to save his life.

Commander Derek Markham awakens stranded on an uncharted planet. His co-pilot is dead, his ship is in ruins, and he’s only alive because a beautiful young woman is healing him with her mind.

As Derek recovers, Caeli shares the horror of her past and her fear for the future. When Derek’s command ship, Horizon, sends rescue, Derek convinces Caeli to leave with him. But his world is as treacherous as hers—full of spies, interplanetary terrorist plots, and political intrigue. Soon the Horizon team is racing to defend an outlying planet from a deadly enemy, and Caeli’s unique skills may just give them the edge they need to save it.

Excerpt
She felt them before she heard them. The sudden wave of panic gripped Caeli so fiercely that she fell to her knees. Sweat beaded on her forehead and her body shook with another person’s cold fear. We’re losing altitude. I can’t keep her nose up. Time is running out. A voice echoed in her head, frantic. The words were strange and foreign, but she felt their intent.

A ship pierced the white clouds overhead. Frozen in place, Caeli tracked it streaking across the sky, her consciousness now fully merged with one of the desperate occupants onboard. Her breath came in short, gasping bursts. Seconds later a shattering pain exploded through her body and she screamed. The ground shook violently beneath her, and then nothing.

“Hottie at ten o’clock,” Angela said as I walked up to the waitress station.

The restaurant where I worked was already busy. Residents of the space station were stopping in for a meal on their way home from their shifts or others were looking for a bite to eat before heading to one of the entertainment venues.

I turned to look across the crowded expanse of the restaurant, amused by her description, to see a man sitting in my section looking back at me.

“Oh, space dust,” I hissed, as I whipped around.

The man was the same person I’d seen that afternoon as I’d walked my small cousin home from the education centre. He was a man who had stood apart from all the other people in the crowded promenade of the station. Our eyes had met, a fleeting glance causing my breath to catch in my throat, before his eyes had sought mine—silver eyes, a hot blatant stare that had sent my heart racing and my knees weakening. I’d felt trapped by that stare, held captive by it until my cousin had dragged me away.

“What? He’s gorgeous. You should be happy that he’s in your section. Maybe you’ll get lucky for once, Tarnee.”

“Yeah, right.” I wrapped a clean apron around my waist and tied it off.

Author Thursday: Interview with Kay Mayor

Interview1. What inspired this book?

The main inspiration of this book was my fascination with ghost-hunting shows. I also wanted to explore a book about a truly gifted psychic who could converse with ghosts as easily as you or I could converse with another person.

2. What was the most difficult part about working on this book?

Hands down, the possession chapters. I wanted them to be intense, but somewhat realistic. It was too easy to go into over-the-top, cheeseball realm. Consequently, they were the last chapters I wrote because I kept putting them off.

3. Who is your favorite character in this book?

Austin Cole because….Sexiest Man Alive

4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

I am currently reading Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Cress by Marissa Meyer. I am always looking forward to the next book in my favorite series, Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones. I also love the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews.

5. What are you working on now?

I am working on the prequel novella for my young adult series, The Circle, and exploring ideas for a continuation of The Spirit Chaser.

Some places are too evil. Some places should be left alone.

Austin Cole has it made. Star of the hit television show Spirit Chaser Investigations, he has become the world’s most famous paranormal investigator. Although hard work, a talented investigation team, and favorable genetics have something to do with it, it’s his lack of fear and willingness to take risks no one else will that make Spirit Chaser Investigations cable’s number-one show.

When a ghost-hunt-gone-wrong seriously injures his best friend and lead psychic, Austin is forced to find a replacement for a team member he considers irreplaceable.

Casey Lawson can’t catch a break. She’s been on her own since she turned eighteen and is scraping by as a part-time psychic and cashier at a New Age store. When a desperate Austin Cole calls her up and offers her a position on his team, has her fortune finally changed?

He’s a control freak; she’s stubborn and opinionated. It takes time, but when they finally realize they’re working on the same side, everything clicks, both on and off screen.

Just when things are looking up, a new threat emerges. Over the years, Austin has angered plenty of demons, and one of them has set her sights on him. Now he’s the one in danger, and it’s up to the team to rescue him from the riskiest investigation of their lives.

Available at Amazon Kindle, Amazon Paperback, Kobo, BN, and Smashwords.

“I got your message. I guess that means Austin tracked you down.”

“Yeah, he did, and I have some questions about that for later.” Casey threw her purse on the entry table and flopped down on the couch. “But first I want to talk about you. I saw what happened on the finale. It was awful.” Casey paused for a moment. “How are you doing?”

“Yeah, that wasn’t my finest moment.” No it wasn’t. Casey thought it was a crappy thing to do, televising what had to be the lowest point in Barrett’s life. But she understood about ratings and the Almighty Dollar. “I’m better now, though,” he told her.

“How did it get in your head?”

“She was strong. Very strong.”

“She?”

“Yeah, the entity self-identified as female. She got in before I even knew I’d been attacked.” An involuntary shiver went through Casey’s spine. Barrett had always been careful. If an entity could get hold of him like that, then no one was safe.

“So, do you remember what happened?”

“Thankfully, no. I have vivid memories of everything that happened before we entered the warehouse. But after that, it’s all kind of a blur. This is what I do remember: She put the darkest thoughts of violence and rage in my head.” It had been like seeing his friends through someone else’s eyes. He had been crazy-out-of-control-angry at Gary and Luis. But the level of hate he’d felt for Austin was off the charts. Not only did he want him to suffer a slow, agonizing death, he wanted to inflict the pain and watch every excruciating moment as he slipped closer and closer to the edge. Barrett exhaled. “Anyway, the next thing I know, I’m in the hospital with a broken arm, terrified of something I can’t name or describe. You remember how I was in high school? When everything was hopeless and I was hating life?”

“Yeah,” Casey said. For as long as she had known Barrett, depression had been a daily struggle. He was the typical high school loner, a bit of a weirdo who didn’t fit into any of the usual cliques. He wandered around the halls with a sad, empty look in his eyes. The dark cloud over his head was what drew Casey to him in the first place. She was an outcast in her own right. Being the preacher’s emo daughter who spoke to ghosts didn’t win her any popularity contests. His vulnerability struck a chord with her. She wanted to take him home with her, like a stray puppy, and hold him until he felt safe and secure. But her comfort was not what he needed.

“That was nothing compared to the level of depression and despair I was feeling after the … thing”—he couldn’t bring himself to articulate the word “possessed”—“attacked me. I found out later that the doctors placed me on a suicide watch.” Barrett shook his head. “Weird. Sorry to unload on you. I’ll save the confessing and emotional vomiting for my priest and shrink.”

“No worries. I shouldn’t have brought up a sore subject.”

“No, Casey. You’re one of the few people who’ve even asked how I’m doing. My boyfriend, Derek, wants to ignore it, pretend like nothing happened. He’s afraid if we discuss it, I’ll lose it or something. I think a few of my friends are even kind of scared of me.” Barrett sighed. “Well, enough about me. What have you been up to, Ms. Lawson? Something fabulous, I’m sure.”

Logan gave a thumbs-up then said to Fay, “When I want to get things done fast, I’ll have to remember to get you jealous.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Somehow you managed to get results none of us could. We’ve been stuck here for what seems like forever. Every day we asked to leave and got rejected for one reason or another. Then your sweet violet eyes turn green with envy because of the attention I gave that young woman, and the next thing I know, we’re out of here.”

“I wasn’t jealous. And she wasn’t a woman. She was a girl.”

“She was a woman and very familiar with the ways of men.”

“She was a tart and tease.”

“Darlin’, I hate to inform you, but the little lady was no tease. She was as hungry as a mountain lion, and I was going to be her main course until you stepped in.”

“Really? Well, I’m sorry I interrupted.”

“No you aren’t.” Logan smirked. “You were jealous.”

“I was not!”

“Come on, admit it. You’re not as indifferent to me as you claim, are you?”

“What?” Fay groaned with her attempt to turn around to see his face, but found it impossible harnessed the way she was.

Chandra finished getting Arlo strapped in and shouted, “Are you two finished scraping?” She motioned for Logan to push the red button. “Let’s go!”

As he reached for his button, Chandra’s sail filled with wind, and off she flew across the dirt with them in her wake.

“I’ll have you know,” Fay hollered so he could hear her above the wind rushing past their ears, “I don’t care if the girl was flirting with you or not.”

“Really? Then why did you force your way between us and shoo her out? I think you like me. Might even adore me.”

“Abhor you, did you say? Yes, you might be right.”

“I said adore. And you do. You just don’t know it yet.”

His lips brushed against her ear, sending a warm pulse of physical awareness through her. Ivánstan was all male. Slowly, she turned around in his arms to gaze into his eyes. They were soft now, the orange reminding her of the sun; his pupils, while still slitted, were narrow.

He said nothing, but held her firmly. Her heart pounded an erratic rhythm. What was he doing to her? Was the magic in their blood at work between them? Why did being in his arms bring her a sense of comfort? Protection? Desire? Could she even trust these feelings?

He leaned forward, opening his lips, his mouth skirting hers, teasing, tempting, before he gently covered her. He kissed her slowly, heightening the pleasure that spiked in her body as her breasts tingled against the fabric of her clothes. One of his hands rested at the base of her spine, supporting her. The other hand he brought up to her face and brushed his fingers against her cheek as they kissed.

By Nyla, she could barely stand, so lost was she in the pleasure of his lips. Fear quickened through her. No man had ever kissed her like this before -- so tenderly, so reverently. She placed her hands over his chest and pushed him away gently, placing distance between them.

Ivánstan cupped her cheek as confusion splayed across his handsome features. "What's wrong?"

"Why did you kiss me?"

Amusement filled his eyes. "Truth be told, I find you attractive."

Splish-Splash Snippet
Malcolm scooped her up and awkwardly carried her to the master bath. He set her next to the enormous tub as he flash-filled it with hot water and bubbles.

“What are you doing?” Andee asked.

“The setting says this scent is supposed to be soothing,” Malcolm explained. “Baths make me feel better, when I remember to take them. Bubble baths are even better.”

She smiled weakly and hiccupped a small laugh, and he helped her into the tub. Malcolm held Andee until she quieted. He was surprisingly calm, and she took solace in his steadfast energy and the warm comfort of the water.

Author Thursday: Interview with Kathleen Collins

Interview1. What flavor is your writing?

Cinnamon…no! Dark, dark chocolate. Or….sorry, I’m indecisive. Seriously though, it’s dark urban fantasy.

2. If this book was made into a movie, who would you cast to play the characters?

Honestly, I would be so ecstatic that I wouldn’t care.

3. What is your favorite scene in the Realm Walker series?

A lot of my favorites would be spoilers but there is a short scene at the beginning of Blood Slave that makes me laugh every time I read it. Juliana and her partner have come across a zombie Pomeranian and Nathan, the werewolf partner, becomes rather protective of it.

4. What are you reading now or what books do you have in your TBR pile?

There are so many books on that pile it’s more like a skyscraper. I just started Reap the Wind by Karen Chance.

5. What are you working on now?

I’m working on a novella and a short story in the Realm Walker and a couple of unrelated projects.

Think Fast Questions

Series Info An estranged mate, a mangled body and a powerful demon who calls her by name…

As a Realm Walker for the Agency, Juliana Norris tracks deadly paranormal quarry using her unique ability to see magical signatures. She excels at her job, but her friends worry about her mysterious habit of dying in the line of duty without staying dead. That's only the first of her secrets.

Most people don't know Juliana became the mate of master vampire Thomas Kendrick before he abandoned her seven years ago. Most people don't know the horrors she endured at the hands of the vampire he left in command. Most people don't know her true parentage, or why a demon on a world-threatening rampage has taken a personal interest in her…

Even as Juliana pursues the demon, it goes after all she holds dear—including Thomas, who is back to claim her for his own. But if she can't reconcile her past and learn to trust herself again, she will lose him forever.

Available at Amazon, BN, Harlequin Print.

Juliana Norris, Realm Walker with the Agency, is an Altered. A fact that she runs up against every time she’s forced to work with human police officers, and their species-ist commissioner, on cases they can’t solve themselves. Which happens more than they would like to admit.

Her gift—the quality that makes her the best Realm Walker in the business, without boast—is the ability to read magical signatures. Whether the gift came from her father, the dark fae god of death, or the mage mother she can’t remember, is anyone’s guess. And when Altered children start going missing with only wild magical signatures as clues, her heritage is the last thing on her mind.

She can’t afford such distractions, and she definitely can’t afford to worry about the fact that her mate, master vampire Thomas Kendrick, hasn’t spoken to her since she saved him from a demon—maybe it’s because she had to stab him to do so. Because whoever is kidnapping these children must be very powerful to wield wild magic. Very powerful, and very dangerous indeed.

Available at Amazon, BN, Harlequin Print.

Keep your distance. Don't look him in the eye. Feed him and leave.

Michael D'Augustino is a priest in the time of the Inquisition. Marked as weak for his refusal to torture those charged with sorcery, heresy, devil worship or worse, he's given another task. Feed the prisoner in the cell in the darkest corner of the dungeon. With the edict comes a set of instructions.

Ever obedient, Michael does exactly as he is told. Until the night his charge doesn't eat and Michael has to enter the cell to find out why. Instead of the beast he believes to be imprisoned there, he finds a man. A broken, tormented man who asks for help.

But all is not as it seems and, before the night is through, Michael will be changed forever.

Available at Amazon and BN.

Can she find a killer in a town where the basest desires are allowed to run free?

There are zombies in the Dead Zone and Juliana Norris is sent to take care of the problem. And for there to be zombies, there had to be bodies. When vampires are found to be the culprits, Juliana is sent undercover in the red light district of Kansas City. Lying to her mate, Thomas Kendrick, isn’t something she wants to do, but she’s in another vampire’s territory and Thomas would not be pleased. Besides, she’s more than capable of doing the job and she needs to prove it to everyone. Most of all herself.

Charles Morgan is in control of the Kansas City area, making a rich living off his various enterprises. Juliana goes undercover at the strip club Lust and gets sucked into his dark, decadent world. More victims turn up and the Agency is positive they’ve got their man, but Juliana is not so sure. When the Agency refuses to listen, she reluctantly turns to Thomas for help. He intervenes but finds Juliana unaware of the danger she is in and discovers she may just be too deep for him to save.

Available at Amazon, BN, iTunes.
