Poison in the Blood comes out on Tuesday. As part of the new release celebration, I'm giving away a signed copy of Bewitched, Blooded and Bewildered over at Goodreads.

As Poison in the Blood is an Emily novel, here is an Emily-centered excerpt from Bewitched, Blooded and Bewildered.

Emily arrived with her husband Michael in tow. As I understood it, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Black had been married for over a century. (If fifty was the golden anniversary, I wondered what one hundred was? Mithril?) They were both dressed impeccably in what I’d consider formal attire—though I’m the sort who wears “good” jeans to holiday events—and I wondered if they were perfect all the time. An eternity of being neatly pressed and freshly washed.

“I feel I must warn you that I’m not certain how much I will be able to find. My abilities can be very fickle,” Emily apologized.

“That’s fine. We’re grateful for your help,” I assured her. Well, I was grateful. I assumed Lex and Marie were as well. Marie seemed to play well with others, so I was fairly certain she wouldn’t go all territorial on us and start spouting things about “chain of command” or “jurisdiction”.

...
“It’s cold in here,” she whispered. Emily shivered, and Michael tried to touch her shoulder, but she shied away.

“Not yet… There was someone else here.”

“The husband?” Marie asked.

“Yes, he slept, but this presence is wrong. It’s not human nor magician.”

“Where was it?” I asked.

Emily crossed to the foot of the king-sized bed and pointed at a spot on the hardwood floor. I followed and sniffed the air. Blood was still the strongest scent, though there wasn’t any visible in the room. The bedding was disheveled, but that was the extent of the damage. I caught the papery smell of librarian that saturated the house, and I knelt and sniffed the floor.

“Brimstone,” I announced with a wrinkled nose.

“I don’t smell anything,” Marie said skeptically.

“You wouldn’t. It’s not actual brimstone. It’s magical residue,” I replied.

“You can smell magic?” Michael asked, quirking a brow. “That’s remarkable.”

Oops. If I hadn’t been so frazzled I wouldn’t have let that slip, but considering that Lex and Zach both knew of my special power, it wasn’t exactly a big secret anymore.

“We’d appreciate if you didn’t share that with anyone,” Lex said. “Was it a demon or a summoner?”

“A demon,” Emily confirmed. “It subdued the father, and the humans took him away.”

There had been demons involved when we rescued Anthony from the hunters, but we weren’t sure what their role was. They just seemed to pop up out of nowhere to keep us from escaping. Maybe the Prometheans flipped a summoner who was supplying them with demon reinforcements. It wouldn’t take much for a summoner to sell out the rest of us. They weren’t nice people.

We followed Emily through the other bedrooms as she related the story of what had happened. Much to everyone’s dismay, she couldn’t see where the family had been taken. I was impressed by what she’d managed to uncover, and the bit about the fact that the hunters were specifically interested in children was very important. And terrifying.

2013 Lori Foster Reader and Author Get Together: Part Two

First, I want to state for the record that I met and/or chatted with a ton of people at the RAGT, way more than I can put into coherent blog-post form. If I didn't mention you here, it's because I have the memory of a goldfish when I'm tired (and trust me, I was exhausted, because there's so much that goes on at an event like this that it's like a hurricane). It's not you, it's me.

And Then It Was Saturday

I am not a morning person. I generally cannot brain until after at least one cup of coffee, so though I was looking forward to attending the Samhain Author Breakfast, I suspected I was going to embarrass myself at least once. But then again, we were all a little zombified at that hour, so I figured I was safe. Because it was BC (Before Coffee) I have vague memories of chatting with Marty Matthews, Heather Osborn, Lindsey Faber, Dee Carney, Lissa Matthews, Dana Marie Bell, and Leah Braemel. But mostly I remember talking with Cora Cade, because we bonded over our mutual interest in dogs, tattoos, and Alan Rickman.

After breakfast I grabbed BFF Diana and we shopped for books for the signing. Look how pretty Blood, Smoke and Mirrors and Bewitched, Blooded and Bewildered looked on the table!

I wanted to hug them. I settled for petting the covers instead.

Once books were purchased, BFF Diana and I perused the raffle baskets again, and I put all my tickets in the Linnea Sinclair basket. (And did not win. I'm bitter. But it's for a good cause, because it raised money for One Way Farm Children's Home. Three of my books were included in one of the baskets donated by Joy of Joyfully Reviewed, including an ARC of Nightfall, which is out in print in July.) We hung out with Anne a bit more and discussed our mutual enthusiasm for the Blackhawks and plans for watching the game later that night. (WOO! LET'S GO HAWKS!)

Diana and I were going to head back to the room, but then I spotted that Linnea Sinclair was going to be doing a Q & A panel, so of course I went to that. I sat across from her and stared at her adoringly. Because she's awesome.

And then, lunch! And then, BOOK SIGNING!

In the past I've discussed how I am terrified at book signings. Because I am. It's incredibly scary and anxiety-attack-inducing for me, but I'm always determined to do it anyway. I'm proud of my writing, and I want to be able to share it with others, so I filled my Cat Hat with my pink promo baggies of chocolates and put on my best "Scared? Me? No!" smile.

See the look of terror on my face? Yeah. Now, what you can't really see in this picture is how awesome I looked in that jacket. How awesome was it? "I lost 50 pounds on Weight Watchers" awesome. BECAUSE I DID! Seriously, people.

I signed a lot of books. I drooled at Toni Blake's book covers. I bonded with Becky Barker over our mutual love of the TV show Justified. (Somehow mutual has become the word of the day in this post.) I stared at Leah Braemel, Anara Bella and Dana Marie Bell, who were signing directly across from me. (I also drooled at Dana's cover posters, because her covers are gorgeous--I have a signed one above my desk.) Author Nicole Dennis came by, and I was all, "OMG, I know you from the Internet!", and she was, "Me and my Fat Cat, right?" Yes! Joy of Joyfully Reviewed also came by and thanked me for my basket donation (and I thanked her for including me). And Colette of A Buckeye Girl Reads stopped by, and I hugged her.

Now, because I'm signing at the signing, BFF Diana gets books signed for me by other authors. (Thank you, BFF Diana!) Apparently she intro'd each one with "This is for Robyn, she's the tall one with the rainbow hair." And everyone knew who I was, heh. (Behold the power of pink and purple hair!) Here is a photo of our signed book haul:

Highlights included the Lori Foster sticker (because her arm is in a sling and she couldn't write) that reads: "This autograph brought to you by the Broken Elbow Division. This sticker applied with Lori's good hand and her best wishes for happy reading." Shiloh Walker signed, "To Robyn of the rainbow hair!" And Linnea Sinclair signed, "Robyn--be star struck!" So cool!

After the signing, we went back up to the room and I checked my email on my phone. (That would be the phone you can clearly see in my jeans pocket in the photo, heh.) Much to my surprise, there was a new email with the title "Congratulations from Passionate Ink", and I gasped. I'd entered Nightfall into the Passionate Plume Contest, and it is a finalist in the Fantasy/Sci Fi category! There was much squeeing and flailing with joy. It was like the icing on the cake of a good day. :-)

And then, dinner! Mmm...cheesecake... I must say, the desserts were very good. After the last raffle basket had been awarded, Diana and I left early, because I was eagerly awaiting the Blackhawks game. (It went into double overtime, but they won! Stanley Cup, here we come!)

We headed home Sunday morning, and collapsed into post-conference comas. It was an awesome, exhausting weekend. We loved seeing everyone, and hope to come back next year.

2013 Lori Foster RAGT: Part One

This was my third time at the Lori Foster Reader and Author Get Together. As always, it was a great experience, and first let me say a big thanks to all the organizers and volunteers who make the RAGT an awesome event. They always work incredibly hard to make sure everyone has a great time. (And Lori managed to pull it all off with one arm tied behind her back! Well, in a sling, actually, which makes it even more impressive.)

An extra special thank you also goes out to my fearless partner-in-crime, BFF Diana, who puts up with my shenanigans on a daily basis but was especially forgiving on this trip. (I may have borrowed her back to sign books and promo on. A few times. I kept expecting she would stab me for this, but no, she was very good natured about it.)

Step One: Always Bring Chocolate

Who doesn't love free chocolate? This year I had the idea of combining my tradition of bringing chocolate to my book signings with handing out promo items by putting them together in tiny fuchsia bags. (Pink, like my hair!) (My current hair is platinum, purple and pink, for the record.) So before the RAGT, BFF Diana and I filled a box with said tiny fuchsia bags, and ate a bunch of chocolate in the process. For quality control purposes. Clearly.

Step Two: Harrison the Samhain Duckie is My Co-Pilot

BFF Diana and I set out for the RAGT on Thursday. In previous years, there was a small Thursday night event off-site that we'd never attended, but this year they did a Thursday night meet-and-greet, so we decided to take the extra day off to attend it. We traveled through the wilds of Indiana and arrived in Cincinnati, where we immediately ran into Paige Tyler, who is an author, Romance Diva, and one of the nicest, sweetest people you could ever hope to meet. (Paige and her husband are quite possibly the cutest couple in the world.) So we were off to a great start.

After sign in, we were spotted by fellow Samhain author Leah Braemel, and we joined her and her partner-in-crime, author Anara Bella, at their table. At my first RAGT signing (which was also my first ever book signing as an author), Leah signed next to me, and I was introduced to her Hauberk Protection series (it's awesome, you should read it). So Leah has a special place in my heart. And here she is, looking fabulous in her white cowboy hat:

The Thursday night crowd was really impressive. We all had a moment of "Whoa, if there are this many people here now, what will it look like tomorrow?" The answer is EVEN BIGGER!

Also, we may have snuck out early to watch Hannibal, because Diana and I are addicted to that show.

Step Three: This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

Friday. Official opening day. BFF Diana and I had lunch at Panera, after which I said, "Let's go to Barnes and Noble and visit the books!" So we wandered through the store to the romance section, and one of the booksellers was doing stock, and she asked if we needed help finding anything. We explained that we were in town for the RAGT and would be picking up books at it on Saturday, and when I introduced myself she TOTALLY KNEW WHO I WAS, PEOPLE! I am famous! ...okay not actually famous, but she had ordered my books, and recognized my name. Still very cool.

When we got back there was a blur of running into and hugging the always fabulous Anne, getting our swag bags (they are pink, like my hair!), accosting our girl crush and her boyfriend in the bar, and ducking in and out of the Samhain open house. Then we toured the main room and checked out the raffle baskets.

It was at this point where I suffered my annual OMG fangirl freakout moment. You would think that by now I would have the poise and self-control to not flip out on my favorite authors. And you'd be wrong. One moment I was calmly perusing baskets, and then BFF Diana nudged me and nodded at a passing person, who happened to be Linnea Sinclair. And I lost my mind and gasped (seriously, I gasped) and started flailing and babbling because I LOVE HER!

It was kind of like this:

Thankfully she took it in stride and seemed amused by my babbling. And she informed me that she had donated a raffle basket, and despite putting all of my tickets in it, I did not win it. After Diana and I walked away I kicked myself for geeking out, and it was kind of like this:

But because I was in "cone of shame" mode, I successfully avoided freaking out when I spotted Shiloh Walker by the elevators a bit later. Well I freaked out, but it was all on the inside. And Twitter. That's internal, right?

Moving on! There was pizza! And then, there was the first signing. It was huge and packed and boisterous and a good time was had by all. ;) Some highlights include:

The always awesome Romance Diva Maddy Barone, and her After the Crash series. I bought the second book. :) Maddy signed next to Anara Bella and Leah Braemel, so it was a row of my favorite author people.

The lovely Lissa Matthews. Lissa is also a Samhain author, and Diana and I picked up a copy of Twisted Up at the Saturday signing (I'll discuss the Saturday signing more in part two.)

And, of course, the always awesome Paige Tyler (with half of her husband in the background). I picked up one of Pagie's promo police duckies, and he is currently hanging out with Samhain Duckie.

Paige was signing at the same table as Shiloh Walker, who was signing her J. C. Daniels books. As it happens, when you put your internal monologue on Twitter, it is, in fact, not internal anymore. So Shiloh Walker looked up at me and said, "Did you Tweet about me earlier?" (I think the purple hair gave me away.) And I said yes, yes I did. So she told us her Nora Roberts story, which is similar to some of my fangirl freak out stories, but hers is way awesomer because Nora Roberts was involved.

My RAGT tale will continue in Part Two, featuring how I stared adoringly at Linnea Sinclair and the Blackhawks won in double overtime. (These things are not related.) (At least not that I know of.)

My RAGT Reading Challenge Results

This is my third year attending the Lori Foster Reader & Author Get Together. It's a great time, and I always come home with a stack of books signed by my favorite authors. This year I heard about ABGR's Reading Challenge for the Get Together, and I decided to give it a shot. It gave me the opportunity to catch up on reading a few things on my TBR shelf, and introduced me to authors I hadn't read before.

These were the levels for the challenge:
Love Bites Level: 0-3 booksBad Boys of Summer Level: 4-6 booksBuckhorn Level: 6-11 books Men Who Walk The Edge Of Honor Level: 12 or more booksAnd my total was (drumroll please): 13 books! Victory is mine!

Here, in alphabetical order, are the authors and books I read:

Maddy Barone, Sleeping with the Wolf. I picked up a (signed!) copy of this at the last RAGT, and I'm looking forward to acquiring more this year. This book is the first in Maddy's After the Crash series, and it has a bit of everything--shapeshifters, time travel, post-apocalypse, and a singer/songwriter.

Dana Marie Bell, Dare to Believe. This is the first Gray Court book, which I actually read after the second book. I love this series. I have a (signed!) poster of the Artistic Vision cover above my desk. And it was definitely entertaining to read on the bus (as in, "Is it warm in here? Oh my!").

Lori Foster, Hard to Handle, and Run the Risk. Action! Suspense! Romance! Good times. :-) After reading Run the Risk, I'm very much looking forward to picking up a copy of Bare it All, because I loved Reese and Alice. They were adorable.

Lora Leigh, Bengal's Heart, and Stygian's Honor. This was my first time reading about the Breeds, and I really enjoyed these. A lot. Seriously, people. I loved that the Breed heroes in these two books were big, tough alphas, and their heroines were even tougher and never backed down. The action, intrigue, and holy cow page scorching love scenes had me instantly sold.

Linnea Sinclair, Gabriel's Ghost, and Shades of Dark. (I'm also currently reading Hope's Folly, but I don't think I'll have it finished by Thursday.) I'd taken an online workshop from Linnea Sinclair before, so I knew she was made of awesome. The Dock Five books are just further evidence of that awesome. Because, DUDE. So good. It was one of those "Can't talk now, must read this" situations.

Shiloh Walker, If You Hear Her, If You See Her, If You Know Her, The Missing, and The Departed So I began my Shiloh Walker journey by reading The Departed. It quickly turned into a desire to READ ALL THE THINGS! Instantly hooked. I tore through the Ash trilogy in a few days, because I was just mesmerized. She's officially one of my new favorite authors.

I can't wait for the RAGT! See you in Cincinnati!

Goodreads Book Giveaway Nightfall by Robyn Bachar Nightfall by Robyn Bachar Giveaway ends May 31, 2013.
See the giveaway details at Goodreads. Enter to win
My new, shiny author copies of Nightfall have arrived, and to celebrate I'm giving a signed copy away on Goodreads!

Nightfall is currently available in ebook, and you can pre-order the print version from Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I'm also going to bring a few copies to giveaway at the Lori Foster Reader & Author Get Together in June.

Here's the blurb:

Her heart says "never". Her body says "now".

When a wounded runner stumbles into her workshop, sculptor Talena Spenser's comfortable, quiet life is shattered. Aiding the escaped slave risks losing more than just her freedom. She is in phase, when Cy'ren females are overwhelmed by the drive to mate.

Mordacki Loren, shadow sword of House Nightfall, knows the pain of losing a mate. He never intended to take another. But Talena, raised by humans with little knowledge of Cy'ren ways, leaves him no choice. As the mating lust consumes them, Dack promises to honor her wishes--even if that means letting her go.

Scarred and hardened by a munitions accident that sent her Alliance career up in flames, Carmen Hawke joined the Cy'ren resistance as captain of the flagship Talon. When old flame Dack returns from a mission with Carmen’s childhood friend and first love, Talena, in tow, the temptation to allow someone--or two someones--close to her again cracks her emotional armor.

Pursued by an unknown enemy, the trio works together to discover the secrets of Talena's past, and to uncover a threat that could destroy the fragile peace of the Cy'ren homeworld.

Warning: If the epic space battles, gunfights and swordplay aren't enough to get you going, strap yourself in for a male-female-female threesome that's scorching enough to fire your engines into overdrive.

Bewitched, Blooded and Bewildered Print Release

For those of you who prefer your books in dead tree form, B,B&B is now out in print! It's very shiny. I hugged my ARCs. Hopefully one of you won a copy from the Goodreads giveaway, but if you didn't, I have a few copies left and I may be persuaded to do another giveaway at some point in the future.

But for now, you can buy your very own shiny copy for 40% off from Amazon and
In case you missed it, here is the blurb:
It’s better to be a bad witch than a dead one.

One thing stands between Catherine Duquesne and happily-ever-after with her soul mate Lex—her unwanted bond with billionaire vampire Zachary Harrison. Married life is hard enough without adding an uninvited vampire to the mix, and being tied to Zach endangers more than just her relationship. If Zach dies, she dies, and with his new seat on the necromancer council being challenged by older, more powerful masters, his life expectancy is dwindling fast.

Vampire politics is only the beginning of Cat’s problems. Hunters are stalking magicians, abducting entire families and killing anyone who resists. As the current Titania and Oberon, Cat and Lex must protect their people, but Cat’s dark past keeps the victims from seeking their help. Worse, the former Titania’s granddaughter wants to oust Cat from the job, believing her vampire ties make her unfit.

To break the bond Cat must broker deals with devils on a journey that will take her to hell and back—literally. Freedom comes at a high price, but Cat will risk anything to save her people and her marriage.

Warning: This book contains explicit language, faerie shenanigans, a field trip to hell, even more magician sex, and gratuitous violence against vampires, demons, hunters, helicopters and the kitchen sink. And if you want to know how the very sexy Lex swept Cat off her feet, check out Blood, Smoke and Mirrors.

Please enjoy this excerpt from the book:

The group stopped a few feet to our right, and we all focused our attention on the faerie council. As always, Cecelia of the Silver Crescent sat in the center chair, quiet and serene, her silvery wings moving languidly behind her. Horatio, an earth faerie, sat to her right, and the fire faerie Laertes to her left.

“Greetings,” Cecelia said with a very faint smile. “Since the inception of Faerie, conflicts between our two worlds have been mediated by our liaisons, who became known as Titania or Oberon. In all that time, a situation such as this one has not arisen. As such, we were uncertain how to proceed.”

Great, our little Titania drama had stumped the faerie council. I wondered if we’d get a prize for that. At least a T-shirt.

“It is the decision of the council that Riley and Jeremiah will be put through three tests, just as Catherine and Alexander underwent. Should the challengers pass all three tests, then a final test will occur with all four of you.”

“Lady Cecelia, we were told that Riley would have a year to challenge for the position,” the Emerald Willow spoke up.

“Under normal circumstances, yes, she would have a year from the death of the former Titania. However, due to current…difficulties, this matter must be decided as soon as possible,” Cecelia explained.

“What difficulties?” Lex asked, and I nodded in curious agreement.

“The problem of the hunters. Magicians have not been hunted on this scale in many years, and all the clans are upset at the loss of their blooded children. Our children are all we have.” Cecelia sighed, and though I may have been imagining it, I thought I saw her slender hands shaking where they were folded in her lap. Had she lost someone? A few someones? Portia patted my arm, and I glanced at her. There was deep sadness in her eyes, and I wondered if she was thinking about Tybalt.

“We’re doing the best we can,” I said.

“I know, and we understand that. This is not a criticism of your performance, but rather a need to resolve this situation. We cannot function while so divided.”

“‘A house divided cannot stand’?” I quoted, and she nodded.

“Precisely. That is why Riley and Jeremiah must begin the process now.”

“Both of them?” I asked, confused. Riley’s claim was through blood—Maureen was her grandmother. Jeremiah was just her boyfriend.

“Yes, both of them, because they are soul mates,” Cecelia replied.

I blinked, and then glanced at them. I was expecting…something. I’m not sure what. Hearts? Flowers? A swelling of dramatic music? Though judging by their expressions they, too, were surprised by the information, they merely took each other’s hand and stood together, a unified front. I turned back to Lex and elbowed him in the ribs. Big jerk. If he’d been that accepting when our soul-mate bombshell was dropped, we wouldn’t have had a fight, I wouldn’t have been alone when Faust came calling, and I wouldn’t have my Harrison problem.

“If they don’t win, how many times do we have to go through this? Maureen had a ton of grandkids,” I pointed out.

“The others won’t be challenging,” Riley replied. “They don’t know that they’re magicians. I’m not going to tell them until they’re ready to hear it.”

Cecelia nodded at Riley. “Very well. Your first test will begin now.”

The pair vanished, leaving their faerie companions alone. I wondered what Riley and Jeremiah would face. Another dragon? I almost felt sorry for the dragon. Who knew what shapeshifters would do with a dragon? Eat it?
