Freaks on YouTube
Hey all!
A super-quick post in between wrapping gifts for our Japanese homestay student, who’s flying in tonight! I sure hope he likes beef curry (because that’s in the crockpot for tonight’s dinner). And I hope he’s not too homesick. And that going to high school for a week with my son and daughter isn’t too challenging. And that he’s not scared of manic kittens who like to chew things….
Anyway, I got an email today notifying me about a YouTube review of Freaks of Greenfield High. How cool is...

Local Library Surprise!
So, on Friday last week I was out shopping with DH, and he dragged me into our local library branch — as you do… uh, make that as youdon’t! By that, I mean that although I frequent the local library, he doesn’t. He’s more your subscribe to The Economist for “recreational” reading kinda guy.And when I did the whole eyebrow raise thing, he elaborated with, “Don’t you want to check if it’s on the shelf?”
Uh, okay. Sure. But… what are the chances of that???
This is one of those cases where a pictur...
Of futuristic knights & murderous crows
It’s time to talk books again — specifically, books read in June :)
I’m sure I’ve already done a rave about Anne Bishop’s “Others” series? *pauses writing to search website Recent Reads posts*.Ah ha. Yep indeedy I did, back on 1st Feb when I posted the January reads. Anyhoo, I must admit to a little trepidation when I picked up the second book A Murder of Crows. My concerns were because I LOVED WRITTEN IN RED SOOOO MUCH that I was a tad worried the next book wouldn’t live up to that fir...

What We Do in the Shadows
This one’s ‘specially for my overseas followers.
You guys might have come across Jemaine Clement by way of the uber-popular TV seriesFlight of the Conchords. But if you haven’t, check this out:
You might recognize the name Taika Waititi by way of his acclaimed film “Boy” (released internationally in 2012). Or for some classic “Taika”, here he is in a Steinlager Pure ad:
Okay, so now I’ve kind of set the scene, imagine these two guys collaborating on a mock-doc about four vampires flatting in mod...

Making over Freaks, Google Play and Libraries
Rather than hit y’all with a bunch of separate posts, thought I’d summarize the goings on all in one hit. And as a special treat, there’s a video at the end of this post for cat-lovers to chuckle over :)
First up…
TheFreaksseries is getting a makeover
As much as I love the current covers, we’ve decided there’s a disconnect between the covers and the contents, which I imagine can be jarring for readers. For example, I believe the cover of Freaks of Greenfield High suggests a contemporary YA with...

Of Old Shades, Ridiculous, and Red Apples
A whole week late with May’s reading list? Oh the shame of it! I blame the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend… and the fact we had family staying over… and two birthdays to celebrate for screwing up my schedule. It’s not easy to stick to a schedule when faced with the distractions of champagne, wine, decadent and delicious chocolate birthday cakes, good food and great company :)
And now to bookish delights!

A milestone celebrated… sort of!
I wasn’t expecting the delivery for another few days. Even mega-pricey priority courier delivery takes a while when your order is coming from the US and you’re waaaay the heck down the other end of the world in NZ. So when the van pulled to a stop in the driveway and the courier knocked on my door, I kinda figured it’d be a local delivery for one of my family. Clothes. Computer software. Protein powder. Nothing to get too excited about.
Wrong.
It was a heavy box. Addressed to me. From the US.
Wo...
