And so it goes

[In street in Glastonbury:]

Woman [addressing my friend K:]: Are you Boudicca?

K: Er, no.

Woman [darkly:]: She wants my knickers.

K:....

Woman: Where's the doctor's surgery?

K told her. Probably just as well.

Unorthodox

Given the nature of Somerset, I rarely find myself drinking with Hasidic Jews, but such was not the case tonight: we went to one of the village pubs, the rather lovely Ashcott Inn, for a late dinner after a business meeting, and met a group of young men from London who are here on a retreat. They'd spent the previous night in the Ashcott and have left their mark on a photograph of cricketer W G Grace, who did indeed sport a magnificent beard: his image now also has a little pair of paper ring...

Words fail me...

...with regard to the woman who approached Trevor in the street and asked if we'd be willing to breed our Rottweiler with her Rottweiler.

Not without a sudden leap of technology, given that both dogs are bitches.

This is why some people shouldn't be allowed to keep dogs.

Sherlock

I'm taking the day off and catching up with the new BBC adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (for transatlantic readers, this is an update of Holmes and Watson into contemporary London). There's been a lot of debate on the British side of the f-list about this series so far, and I have to agree with [info:] desperance among others about some of its failings, but I am enjoying it. Despite being a Holmes afficionado, I failed to realise what the first episode was based on. The plot...well, yes. Or rather, no,...

Meme: you know you're from...

This has mainly shown up on the f-list as applying to various US states (you can Google your place of origin and 'you know you're from'). I couldn't find one from Gloucestershire but I did find one for Somerset:

….you think Bath's a big city
… you can tell sheep from goats
… you know why to avoid Bridgwater
… you think Bristol is 'up north'
… venturing outside of the 30 limit is just unnecessary
… Chinese takeaways that deliver, what are they?
… the smell of cow shit makes you feel at home
… everywhe...

IRON KHAN - UPDATE

I gather from various people that Night Shade will now not be publishing Iron Khan. I understand that they are either refunding, or giving people a voucher.

The rights are reverting to myself. My agent and I (and several other people) are considering various options, and one of these is publishing the book initially in e-format, with a view to a special edition in hard copy a little further down the line. One of my e-story subscribers has very kindly formatted a short story for the Kindle, and...
