The Evernighties Blog Challenge - Week 9

Diet before summer? How seriously?
Is this like when people make a New Year's resolution?

Maybe when I was in my twenties I'd consider a diet before summer. After all, it was far more easier to lose weight back then. Since I'm on the far side of forty, the weight seems to have adopted me, vowing never to leave again.

The truth is, I don't believe in diets. Diets work on immediate gratification of controlling what goes in the mouth, but as soon as the motivate is gone, so is the will power to restrict calories. True, there are some altruistic people out there who thrive on salads and water. Or people whose livelihood depends on how many bones are sticking out. (models, movie stars, etc) I have no doubt those people either 1) have great discipline to stick to a diet and/or 2) have enough money to have coaches to keep them on track.

But I am not any of those people.

I have a real life, where I work on my feet for 8-10 hours a day. I have a teenager who loves French fries. I have a husband who, despite being diabetic, loves sweets. I am constantly on the go, so when I get the few moments to sit down I have no desire to hit a gym. The most I do is try to watch what I eat, and avoid too many empty caloric choices.

Diets are a fad, and there are many fads out there that cost money. The real thing that people need is learning HOW to eat. For instance, Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. Yes, technically, it might be a diet, but it's also teaching people nutrition, and that's way more important than a fad diet that disappears in the blink of an eye. (And let me say that I'm not endorsing either of those programs, I was using them as an example)

A look into...~ About the Series ~
* Nestled within the hills of central Texas is a special ranch. A place that defies the laws of physics—that of time, space, and dimensions. It’s a place where normal morphs with the paranormal and supernatural. A place that seems to know what a person’s true desires and needs are, and then allows the right circumstances to occur to fulfill those wishes.

* Welcome to the Gateway Ranch.

* Your gateway to all things possible…
~ About the Book ~
Katrina Foster has survived a life no one dreams about and most don’t want to know about. Escaping to a ranch in Texas she used to visit during the summers of her childhood and rekindling an old relationship with Dakota Remington, she hopes to leave the nightmare of her past behind her. At first, all seems well, but when strange things begin to happen, she wonders if history’s about to repeat itself.

Dakota Remington has devoted his life to working at Gateway Ranch. He’s excited when Kat, his former sweetheart, returns and looks forward to reuniting with her. He finds she’s changed, though, and he’s not sure if it’s for the better. But he’s up for the challenge of the puzzle that is Kat.

~ Excerpt ~
The hard composite of her firearm shifted against her lower back.

Well, if push comes to shove, I can protect myself. I’ll shoot the bastard if he shows up and tries anything.

Eventually, her nerves calmed enough so she could move without feeling ill.

She rose and stripped out of her clothes, put her weapon on the counter, then stepped into the shower. The hard and hot spray beat on her, helping her to feel something other than worry about potential rumors or her ex finding her. Kat bowed her head, placed her hands above the faucets. The water sluiced down her hair, cascaded in wide streams over her back. More time passed. Relaxed and clear headed, she finished her shower and was about to open the door when a thud and click sounded on the other side.

Gripping the towel wrapped around her body, she snatched her weapon, opened the door, and cautiously looked out into the room.

Dakota lounged on the bed, one leg bent, his hat propped on that leg’s knee. His hair stuck up in clumpy spikes. He ran a dirty hand through his dark brown locks.

Kat released a pent-up breath, lowered her weapon, and placed the Glock on a counter next to the bathroom door. “How’d you get in here?”

Tired eyes gazed at her. “I’m manager on duty while the Taggerts are away, ’member? Got a bunch of master keys.” Dak held up the ring of them. “You okay? When you didn’t come back, I got worried.”

“I’m fine. I think the humidity got to me. Along with the dirt.”

“Sure. The humidity. You tell me that you’re afraid a man is going to come after you, or rather us. We hear about the vehicle. You turn white as one of our ghosts and run off. Who was in the car, Kat?”

“Hell if I know. I’ve been with you all day. I didn’t see the fancy black car or who was in it.”

“You don’t have a clue as to who was in the car? I’m not buying it.”

“Buy it or don’t.” She crossed her arms over her stomach. “I really don’t know. It could have been Nero. It could have been his goons. It could have been a neighbor of yours or one of the party guests Kent mentioned. I. Wasn’t. There. I. Didn’t. See.”

Dakota flung himself off the bed and slammed the hat on his head. “Get dressed. You’ll come with me while I get cleaned up then we’ll go hang out in the rec hall.”

“You know what, Dak? I appreciate the Boy Scout approach, and how you’re trying to get a merit badge for babysitting, but all I want is to lie down and take a nap.”

“Kat, please. I’m hot, dirty, and tired. I don’t want to argue.” He strode to the door. “Get dressed so we can get going.” His gaze flashed darkly, roamed over her with an appraising glance. A slow grin tipped up the corner of his lips.

Flashback Friday ... Second Chance at Love

When Alannah’s husband tells her she’s boring and he doesn’t want to be married to her anymore she spirals into a world of hurt and confusion.  She decides to go back to her hometown in Missouri to figure out where she lost the confident girl she used to be.

Speeding into town, she’s pulled over by her old best friend, Skylar Randall, now the town sheriff.  He’s still mad at her for leaving twelve years ago without a word of good-bye.  But suddenly Sky isn’t just her high school friend anymore, he’s morphed into a man who goes after what he wants, and he’s just declared he wants her.

But Sky’s private world is one full of bondage and in trying to silence the doubts in her head, he will tie her up as long as it takes for her realize that what she really left behind was faith, hope and whole lot of kisses.

“Ladies,” he greeted in a soft, super seductive voice.  How’d he pack such a panty wetting inflection in one word?

Alannah listened to her companions fumbling for something coherent to say and failing miserably.  It would’ve made her laugh except she suspected she’d be in the same boat if she opened her mouth.  So instead, she rose, grabbed her empty plate and walked away, making a beeline for the nearest trash can before heading off into the woods for a quick walk to get her equilibrium back.

It was almost surreal being back here, hearing the splashes and laughter from the partygoers.  She knew once night fell that a bonfire would go up and everyone would settle around with beers and blankets to swap stories.  Some would head off for a little privacy.  Some wouldn’t give a shit about privacy.

“Having fun?” Sky asked from behind her, startling her so bad she almost tripped.

His arms caught her around her stomach and hauled her back just in time, and she sagged in relief until she felt all of him touching all of her.  Good god almighty, there wasn’t padding under those clothes.  His chest cradled her back and his groin fit in the curve of her ass.  And then, holy moly…his cock went from relaxed to hard in the blink of an eye.  He was poking her.  Literally.

All the breath swooshed from her and before she realized what she was doing, she’d wiggled her ass against him.  She was rewarded with a groan right before Sky bent over to nuzzle his nose against the curve where her neck met her shoulder.  His breath was warm and it tickled the fine hair at her nape.  Her libido began to hyperventilate, her mouth began to salivate, and suddenly all she wanted to do was turn around and ride him into next Sunday.

Holy shit.  Where’d that thought come from?

Panicking just a little, because he used to be her best friend, she pulled away and spun, panting like she’d just run a marathon.  His blue eyes were deep and stormy and they looked at her with good old-fashioned lust.  She felt an answering need pulse through her clit so she silently gave it a warning to back the fuck down.  This was Sky…  She couldn’t possibly want to fuck him.  Could she?

Valentine Give-away #2!

What is/was your favorite get-away with your special loved one?

I am a very lucky woman. I met my husband online, and the first time I saw him, I knew instantly that he was The One. We dated for about 9 months, lived together for 2 years, and we married this past May.
One of our favorite things to do is hike. Our honeymoon was spent hiking in Arches National Park. We've been all throughout Southern Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California. This whole introduction led to me say that my favorite get-away was on one of our trips. Although I've enjoyed many of our trips, here are my top three:
1) The Arizona/Utah Adventure (see the video HERE )2) Goldstrike Hot Springs (see video HERE )3) Kanarraville Falls in Utah (no video)
Hiking might not seem like a romantic get-away, but for me and Mike, it's a special time we can drive away from everything pressing in around us and simply enjoy each other's company.

When the stock market crashes on October 29, 1929, it doesn’t take long for Ruby Talcott to lose everything. Her father’s shipping legacy slips through her fingers. Alone, destitute, she packs up her two best friends Eden and Merridie, and takes them to England for a new life.
Working in her family’s warehouse of unclaimed cargo, she foils a plot to steal a map. But this isn’t just any map…it’s to a lost pirate treasure. Ruby takes the map for herself and convinces Eden and Merridie to go with her to find the priceless treasure.
She finds Captain Sinclair Dardon, a man also hit hard by the economic turn, to sail them towards adventure. But Ruby didn’t count on her wild attraction to the handsome Captain. Nor did she expect he has his own bad guys hunting him.
Excerpt:She was vaguely aware her mouth dropped open. Before her wasn’t the typical scruffy-bearded, dirty boat captain. This man was young. And handsome. More butterflies fluttered in her stomach. He had short black hair that looked like he’d been running his fingers through it in aggravation. He needed a shave, but Ruby rather thought his slight whiskers enhanced his looks rather than detracted. Although he looked tough, he had kind eyes––blue maybe, or green. It was hard to tell in the muted lantern light. He was tall, muscular, and when their gazes met her heart stuttered in her chest.

“My name is Sin,” he said, introducing himself, although his gaze stayed locked upon her.

“Literally or figuratively?” Merridie asked dryly.

He winked at her. “Captain Sinclair Dardon. Who are you, and how may I help you?”

“I’m Ruby Talcott, and that’s Merridie Morgan and Eden Cariker. We need passage to Africa,” Ruby said, ignoring the odd excitement gripping her insides. Now was not the time to get distracted by a pretty face. Oh, but that was easier said than done, especially once he turned those hypnotizing eyes back her way.

“Why do you think I can help?”

“The registry office has you listed as heading to Africa this morning. We just need a ride.”

“I’m not a passenger ship.”

“We won’t be passengers,” Ruby insisted. “We can earn our way.”

The way his gaze traveled up and down her body had her blood heating up and leaving little doubt to what was going through his lascivious mind.

“This isn’t a whorehouse either,” he stated.

Excerpt
In silence, Embry and I watched as the others moved to help their fallen friend. “We have the element of surprise. We could—”“No.” I cut off his comment. We weren’t savages and attacking the men wouldn’t solve our problems.“Lindy, you’re being unreasonable.” Embry growled, a deep rumble in his chest that caused the humans to grow still and silent, their eyes now turned in our direction.Shit. Shit. Shit.“What was that?” one man called out.  “You all heard that growl, right?”Several men nodded. I flicked my gaze left then right, looking for our best means of escape. “Idiot,”I said, but Embry was no longer listening. He crouched low to the ground, his paws digging into the earth as he readied to strike. “Don’t you dare.”The humans all turned to one another, aware of our presence and uncertain of what to do. I crouched beside him, my body pressed up against his side. “Don’t do this.”I nudged Embry with my nose, urging him to retreat. We could disappear deeper into the forest, leave the humans to their bidding. We’d already driven them off their intended course—away from the Den and our vulnerable. There was no need to remain now that the imminent risk had subsided. The humans approached together, their eyes wary and their weapons raised. Two others shouldered their fallen man and slowly made their retreat. What to do…I scanned their numbers. One of the humans carried a bow. He stepped forward, his piercing eyes scanning every inch of his surroundings with cool efficiency. Unlike the other men, he didn’t smell of fear. Darker skinned and with a militant stance, he didn’t have any nervous ticks either. Trepidation flooded through my me. He was an outsider and something told me he was the one we needed to be wary of.“There are only four of them,” Embry said, following my train of thought.“That doesn’t matter. We can’t—”He lunged.Damn us all to hell—I lunged after him, unwilling to leave him to fight alone.

Elaine Madigan is easily the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met. Hilarious. Sexy. Smart. And unfortunately, she’s also convinced herself that I’m way too young for, so she’s friend-zoned me.

Excerpt
Simon
We’ve been at this scavenger hunt for a good half hour, and we’re tied at 5. We’ve got a list of outlandish costumes and the goal is to spot as many, in real time, as we can. People watching is fun, but let’s face it: I’ve mostly been watching Elaine--the way she smiles softly, the way she toys with the ends of her hair or the bracelets on her wrist. I thought I was crushing before, but spending time with her one-on-one, (and no, the occasional carpool does not count) has me completely enchanted.
She scans the bar again, but the look on her face tells me she’s come up empty. I take a quick glance around and smile.
“What?”
“Sexy nun for the win.”
“No freaking way.”
“Yes freaking way. Sexy nun right at your back. Wait.okay, look now.” I watch her turn to spot a co-ed in little more than a crop-top and a habit. Seriously, her skirt’s the size of a business envelope, which could be an issue in the eyes of the Lord. “Holy crap, that girl will catch pneumonia.”
“Maybe the sexy doctors at the bar should lend a hand?”
She laughs, and my heart expands. “Well, sure. It’s the medically responsible thing to do.”
I shake my head at the visual. “Sounds like a bad porno.”
“Is there such a thing as a good porno?” The sincerity in her voice makes me choke on my beer.
“Oh, God! I’m sorry! Are you okay? Here, put your arms up. Maybe you need the sexy doctors?”
I cough loudly and draw a few stares. I smile in reassurance. “I’m good,” I promise, as I clear my throat a final time. “I don’t need the sexy doctors. Thoroughly enjoying my evening with a sexy copy-editor, though.”
Elaine blushes at my compliment as I flag down the scarecrow. Hell, even I’m impressed with the level of smooth I’ve been able to maintain. Being with Elaine is so easy that all--well, okay, a solid 50%--of my awkwardness seems to have dissipated.
The scarecrow returns and nods when I ask for a refill. She turns to Elaine, “Another for you, too?”
“Yes, thanks, but I’ll switch to a Shirley Temple Black.” Scarecrow nods again and disappears into the crowd.
“Did you seriously just order a Shirley Temple?  That’s awesome. I don’t think I’ve had one of those since I was ten.”
She opens her mouth, and I’d bet my Wookie collection she’s about to knock on my age. Emboldened by the fact that I’m making her laugh and this date is going well, despite my inability to wear matching shoes, I reach across the table and press my finger to her lips. “Don’t say it.”
She widens her eyes with innocence, but I’m not fooled. Gifted program, remember? “Don’t. Whatever crack you were going to say about my age or yours, don’t.” Scarecrow returns with our drinks, and I accept mine, even if it means pulling my hand away from Elaine’s lips.
“I wasn’t going to say anything.” She can’t keep a straight face as she lifts her drink.
“Bullshit. You were two seconds away from saying something like, ‘When you were ten? What was that? Three years ago?’” I’m sure I impress her with my exaggerated falsetto.
“Yes, well.” She looks appropriately and adorably sheepish. “I was merely going to clarify that a Shirley Temple Black is an improvement on the old standard because it contains a shot of vodka. And the Black comes in because that was her married name.”
“Who knew?  And it’s good, this grown up version?”
“It’s delicious.” She sips her drink through her straw, and my cock, which has been half hard since this date began, presses painfully against my fly. Christ. If she starts talking about porn again, I’ll go out of my damn mind.
She reaches across the table this time and puts her hand in mine, lacing our fingers together. Her thumb rubs over my pulse point; it’s barely a touch, but it’s enough to drive me crazy. Her hand moves down to my forearm, and her fingers caress the skin there. It feels good, sure, but when I look up at her and see the flush on her cheeks and I know she’s getting turned on by my forearms, I nearly lose it.
She pulls away quickly, and I’m about to protest or cry like a baby, but she’s toying with the little plastic sword, and I’m a little mesmerized as she peels a cherry off the length of the sword, rolls it on the tips of her fingers, and then points it in my direction. “Want my cherry?”
Sweet. Jesus.
