All The Right Moves

Two Pilobolus dancers perform "Symbiosis."

This is a performance which took place in June 2007 but I think it's timeless.

All Shiny and New

Well the bulk of it's done so welcome to my new blog. I was previously posting to my blog on goodreads but this will be my home from now on (I'll feed the posts I make here to goodreads as well).

Apart from setting up this blog, I'm working on an eBook version of The Jeremy. It involves major reformatting of the documents used for the printed version, which is a labour intensive operation, one that requires the imbibing of large amounts of caffeine-laced liquid refreshment. There's still a...

Blogger Refugee

I'm moving here from Blogger.com (where I didn't do any blogging!). It'll take me a while to get set up but trust me (I'm a writer!), I'm working on it…

In the meantime, you could check out my goodreads page.

Time Trials

Ayayay! I've been struggling with NEHITD* syndrome, hence my lack of posts recently. And just in case you are already feverishly looking for the bookmark you saved for that wonderful "How to Organise Your Life" website, I'd just like to assure you that I do know how to organise my life. I just haven't been very good at it lately.

What have I been doing? It's a secret.

No, not really. Most of it's been fairly boring and mundane. Like converting the The Jeremy from Open Office format to html (the format required to make eBook versions). I haven't yet decided if I will make it available for purchase through eBook channels, like Kindle, Smashwords or Booklocker. I'll make up my mind about that when the job's done.

I've also been reading, and giving feedback about, someone else's work which, if you are to do the job properly (ie. as well as you would hope someone else would do it for you), can become a time consuming beast of ravenous proportions.

So, if you are waiting for a personal response from me about anything, this post is supposed to get me off the hook for a little longer. Nothing wrong with a little wishful thinking, eh?

* Not Enough Hours In The Day - a close relative of Headless Chicken syndrome.

Pay It Forward 2010 Blog Tour

I belong to a group here on Goodreads called Pay It Forward 2010, started by Lori Newman. I was attracted to it because I liked the idea expressed in the turn of the century film of Catherine Ryan Hyde's book, Pay It Forward.

The group maintains a list of member authors and their book(s). To become a part of it, authors are invited to purchase, read and review the last book in the list, and to append their name and book to the list.

Elizabeth Blake was above me in the list when I joined. You can read my review of her book No Child Left Behind? The True Story of a Teacher's Quest by clicking here.

Lori has begun a Pay It Forward blog Tour. Everyone is invited. You should find a list of all the participating authors, or a link similar to the one below, on their blogs/websites.

MckLinky Blog Hop Click here to take the tour. But before you do, why not have a look through some of my older posts first?
This post seems to be most popular.

Or you might like to check out my book: The Jeremy - Snaps Of The Dragon

Deliberating

I'd have posted yesterday but my internet connection went down. A ghastly experience which leaves me feeling like an important body part has been amputated. But this morning all is well again, the tension is gone and I can breathe freely.

For anyone who entered my unofficial book giveaway, please be patient, I'm making my choices but it's harder than I thought it would be! I will contact you all individually when the deed is done.

There's pondering to do and now is the time to do it...

From aliens to authors

I seem to have been thinking quite a lot about other life-forms lately. I don't mean aliens from outer space. I mean fellow inhabitants of this planet.

Today I watched the fish floundering around in the tank in the wet market section of my local supermarket. It may have been a fluke, but I think they were mudfish, not flounders.

They seemed to be bullying each other, trying to gain some advantage, to establish a pecking order despite the lack of anything to peck at. It seemed ironic that the most conspicuous bullies would likely be the first to swim in a pool of searingly hot oil.

For some reason, which no doubt has deep psychological significance, although exactly what it might be escapes me, my thoughts turned to puppies. No, not those sort of puppies! The sort you find in Battersea Dogs Home, an establishment which I used to pass by quite regularly in a previous life.

Even from within the hermetically sealed environment of an Adtranz Electrostar railway carriage, the sound of barking could sometimes be heard over the drone of the air conditioning. Hundreds of doggy voices all shouting "Pick me! Pick me!"

I didn't heed their cries, being more of a cat person, but it struck me how unselective those dogs seemed to be. Anyone would do. They'd be anyone's friend. If they were on Facebook, they'd be the ones with 5000 'friends', desperately hoping that one of them would lose the apostrophes.

A friend on Shelfari added a book to her 'Planning to read' shelf and almost immediately received a 'be my friend' request from the author. Her reaction was not positive. She said "It seems kind of like what political people do, become friends so you will vote for them."

I understood how she felt and that's why I wouldn't adopt that approach, but having written a book (yes, that was the obligatory book plug), I also understand how that author feels. We're a bit like those puppies. Except we're yapping "Read my book! Read my book!"

Woof, woof.

Climbing the walls

Well, staring at them. Noticing the fine detail, the little ridges and valleys, the bobbles and pits left by the action of the roller as it splurged paint on the bare plaster. It must have been a while ago; the residual stains of squashed insects are visible here and there, their short lives abruptly curtailed without a thought for their children. Oh! Think of the children!

Oh, I see, you were thinking of children.

Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, Jap. B Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, Filariasis, Lyme Disease, Leishmaniasis, Sleeping Sickness, Chagas Disease, Typhus, Plague.

Back to reality. Bzzzz, bzzzz, Splatt!
