Heretic Babbles Word Slur

Does anyone play Scrabble on a real board with real tiles any more?

Yes. I do. Occasionally. And when I play, I follow the rules. As do the people I usually play against. Against is the correct word to use because we are quite competitive, lapping up the temporary kudos associated with an obscure high-scoring word, or the clever placement of a simple one.

A couple of months back there was a bit of a furore over news that the rules of Scrabble were being changed to allow, among other things...

A picture is worth seven thousand one hundred and sixty four words

No prizes for guessing whose recent speech at Oxford University generated such wide-eyed awe, riveting the attention of the packed—

oh…hang on a mo, there must be some mistake – the picture must have been photoshopped!

Afterburner

So now I know that animated GIFs in WordPress will be animated only if they are displayed at their original size. Here's what the image in my previous post was supposed to look like…

Ooooh! I can hear thunder and I can see lightning through my window. And it's getting closer. Just as well I got the candle going..teeheehee.

"Let there be light." (Lite)

GlassFlame.gifI liked a quote in Wednesday's rss feed from Motivational Quote. It was attributed to Edith Wharton, author of The Age of Innocence, a novel she wrote about ninety years ago.

But before quoting the quote, perhaps I should make it clear that my liking it did not involve the clicking of any buttons. I just liked it in the old-fashioned sense.

"There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it."

The quote reminded me of the above graphic, which I made a while...

Modern Art

Well it could be one of those paintings where the artist just lobs globs of paint at the canvas, but I bet you knew almost immediately it's a map of the world, even though it's so distorted.

It seems distorted because it's not a map of land areas like those we are used to seeing. This is a map of world population distribution; the population density of a country determines its size on the map. If you are anything like me, you will have checked out your own country already, to see how it...

Got to get out from these four walls!

I fell in love with Dorothy Lamour.

Yeah, me and millions of other adolescent boys, and no doubt post-adolescent 'boys' too. But I doubt any of us, with the possible exception of J Edgar Hoover* and one or two others, fell in love with Mary Leta Dorothy Slaton.

Who?

Exactly. We fell in love with the exotic damsel who shimmied around in a revealing (for the times) sarong. We ignored the American accent and imagined she was truly what we wanted her to be.

So what's brought on all this reminiscing? ...

Temptation – (Feels Like) Heaven

I was tempted to blog yesterday because…

…well, because if you write a blog that's what you're supposed to do! Fortunately the temptation to write something, anything, was not strong enough to prompt me to fish anything out of the torporific stew of muddled thoughts slushing around in my head.

Be that as it may, Heaven Seventeen, the British synthpop band that was popular in the UK during the early part of the eighties (they had a No. 2 hit in 1983 with "Temptation"), did poke their heads...

Here's another nice mess you've gotten me into*

Quotes of the Day included one from Oliver Cromwell today:

"I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken."

Well, I for one am certain that it's an exceedingly good idea, firstly to qualify our certainties with the caveat, 'based on what I/we currently know', and secondly to be prepared to revise our conclusions in the light of new information. In fact it's a principle I'm quite dogmatic about.

Cromwell included the quoted sentence in a letter he wrote to the...
