I heart #bookclub #radioshangrila
30 women braved a windstorm and power outages to talk about Radio Shangri-La with me last night at the beautiful library in El Segundo. They asked wonderful questions and it's the greatest honor for a writer to have such an attentive audience of readers.
And I Skyped into the Friendly Travel Book Club in Philadelphia, which met the night before.
I heart bookclubs! Send me more, please!

Dongyu Gatsal Ling #Nunnery: The Perfection of #Patience
Please click here to view our latest newsletter "Gatsal". In this issue, adorned by a beautiful image of Maha Prajapati Gautami, the first Buddhist nun, as depicted in one of our Temple murals, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo offers her regular update on the happenings at DGL. There is a report on her very successful visit to New York in June which included the launch of her new book, Into the Heart of Life. Features on the DGL nuns include a profile of one of our nuns, Ani Lobsang Dolma, other articles include visits to His Holiness the Karmapa's Temple and the younger nuns visit to a local swimming pool – for most, their first experience of swimming and their smiling faces confirm that they enjoyed the experience. The articles which are written by the nuns themselves are a very valuable opportunity for them to develop their English skills. They gain great confidence in seeing their words in print.
Jetsunma's new book, along with a new CD of the nuns chanting the CHOD practice are now available through the DGL shop, also profiled in this issue.
"Often it is the difficulties and the problems that we have in our life that are our opportunity to develop and grow."

Buddhists greeted by Hindus on Bodhi Day
Hindus have sent early greetings to Buddhist communities world over on Bodhi Day, commemorating Gautama Buddha's enlightenment, which falls on December eight.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a release in New Delhi (India) today, expressed warmest greetings on Bodhi Day, wishing peace and joy to all the Buddhists.
Rajan Zed, who is the President of Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed that all religions should work together for a just and peaceful world. Dialogue would bring us mutual enrichment, he added.
Bodhi Day is observed to commemorate historical Gautama's achieving enlightenment, finding the answers he sought, experiencing Nirvana, and becoming Buddha (Awakened One). Meditation, sutra chanting, incense offerings, study of scriptures, Sangha celebrations, etc., form part of the commemoration.
Gautama Buddha founded Buddhism, fourth largest religion of the world, in 6th and 5th centuries BCE. Basic teachings of Buddhism can be epitomized in Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, and paticca-samuppada. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal.

A sneak peek at the first draft of the cover for the paperback edition of Radio Shangri-La, due out in April from Broadway Books. Plus, yay for me: I just turned in an extra chapter for this edition. It's about Nepalese-Bhutanese refugees here in the US.
