My Awesome Mom And Mom-In-Law

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day in North America.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are fortunate to have both our Moms still with us. (knock on wood)

I sent my Mom yellow roses (her favorites) and chocolate from a florist local to her. She knows the owner, went to school with him, and he always delivers the flowers himself. They have a good chat, which makes my Mom as happy as the roses and chocolate.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby will be bringing his Mom chocolate and cash. The cash will be rapidly redistributed to people and causes Awesome Mom-in-law feels need it more than she does. She has a generous soul…just like her son. (smiles)

I’m lucky to have two such wonderful women in my life and I hope you have wonderful women (including everyone who identifies as a woman) in your life also, whether they are biologically your Mom or Moms of the Heart, mentors you can learn from and love. (big hugs)

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – May 1st

I completed the deep revisions for Provoking Odium, the 1st story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in June), and have submitted it to my Awesome Editor. I LOVE the changes. The story is so much stronger now. I hope my Awesome Editor loves them also.

I’ve returned to working on Grin And Bare Him, the 2nd story in the Cyborg Unity series (likely releasing in October). This story builds on Provoking Odium so rewrites need to happen to align with its revisions. And, of course, nothing will be certain until that 1st story is finalized.

This cyborg believes he’s in control.

Provoking Odium And Deep Re-Writes

On Sunday, I mentioned I had deep re-writes on Provoking Odium last week. Now that there is some emotional distance between me and the re-writes, I thought I’d talk about why these re-writes happened.

I made a wrong story decision.

I forced the characters to go down a path they wouldn’t ever venture along on their own.

I knew in my gut I was doing this. I even had the right decision in my head.

But stars, I was so in love, so insistent on this path. It would be fresh and exciting, I told myself.

It might have been all that but it was also wrong for the characters, wrong for the story. My Awesome Editor could see that. I was too enamored of my alternate path to realize this on my own.

It is a much better story after the revisions. The ending is true to Odium and Briella.

It is now THEIR story, not mine.

Beauty And The Beast Mafia Squirrel Edition

There is a Beauty And The Beast romance happening in the Sax back yard.
The most beautiful gray/tan squirrel I have ever seen decided the black squirrel who tore out all his fur was her perfect match.
They are adorable. They chase each other around all day, rolling on the grass.

The Mafia Squirrels have also redecorated.
The pair of light blue men’s briefs that were hanging proudly from the top branch of the tallest fir tree is thankfully gone.
The squirrels shredded it into 100+ pieces and scattered the frayed cloth all over the back yard.

They were quite pleased with the underwear carpet they’d created.
When I picked up the pieces of cloth, they chattered at me and flung pinecones at my head.
I survived that bombardment and the back yard is now gitch-free.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord Reunited

Warlord Reunited is one of my rare stories in which the couple (or more) had a relationship before Chapter One. Elle and Berke met, fell in love, parted and solar cycles later, they cross paths again.

They have a history. It is filled with passion, lust, love and hate. And all those emotions swirl into a giant vortex of feelings in Warlord Reunited.

Their romance is one of my favorite stories I’ve written.

Solar cycles ago, Berke, a savage Chamele Warlord, found his gerel, the one being he is destined to be with for all time…except he couldn’t embrace that fate. He was fighting a series of brutal wars.

To protect his little human female, he conveyed her far from the Chamele sector. He then returned to the endless battles, concealing his pain, his anguish, his need, under a thick layer of ice.

His gerel was safe. That was all that mattered to him.

When Elle was a young bounty hunter, she bonded with an arrogant warrior on a distant planet. She was deliriously happy…for a while. Then he dumped her in a strange settlement far from his home and left, never to return.

Their parting caused her excruciating pain—both physical and emotional. She endured it, earned the esteemed role of head bounty hunter of an academy, salvaged a bit of a life from the disaster her primitive warrior had made of it.

Now, two of her bounty hunters have made the same terrible mistake. Elle is determined to rescue her friends and break their connections with their Chamele Warlords.

While she is in the sector, she plans to kill the warrior she’d once considered hers. Elle is ending her relationship with Berke…permanently.

Dune And Foreseeing the Future

Warning – This post will contain some spoilers for Dune. If you haven’t yet watched the 2021 movie, you might wish to skip this post.

In the 2021 version of Dune, based on the book by Frank Herbert, Paul, the hero, sees the future in his dreams. He dreams of beings he’ll meet and events that could happen.

That’s great skill for a character to have but it makes creating an interesting story much more challenging.

Because, if Paul can see the future, he should be able to avoid nastiness like loss and death. He has the ability to live until he dies of natural causes.

We, as readers and viewers, will know he’ll always safe in battle or other dangerous situations. There will be no fear of him dying and no suspense.

The solution to this is Paul dreams about events that COULD happen. If he changes his responses, he changes the outcomes. He changes the future. It shifts from being known to being unknown. And in that unknown future, he COULD die in battle.

Seeing the future gives Paul an advantage but it doesn’t make him invincible.

Provoking Odium And Praecipua Trois

In Provoking Odium, the first story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in June), Briella, the human heroine, flies to Praecipua Trois to rescue some beings.

Praecipua Trois is a nod to Praecipua, the brightest star in the constellation of Leo Minor. Praecipua is Latin for “the Chief”.

Praecipua is a a red clump giant. Yes, that’s not the sexiest of names. (grins) Red clump giants are clusterings of red giants. These stars were originally similar to the sun, have undergone a helium flash and are now fusing helium at their cores.

Praecipua is also approximately 95 light-years from Earth’s sun.

Dressed In Starlight

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I walked into Camille La Vie in New York and I was dazzled by the dresses. So many of them looked like they were made from starlight. (smiles)

I could imagine a starlight-themed event featuring many of the couples (and more) from my stories.

I could picture Dita from Dark Thoughts wearing something like this to a grand event. She’d likely have a gun strapped to the small of her back and have daggers strapped to her boots.

Illona from Containing Malice might like this dress. The sleeveless style would allow her to more easily wear her medic jacket over top it.

This dress looks like it could be fabricated from projectile-proof material and that would appeal to Eirene Ours from Seizing Power. It also conveys strength, which she would love.

I could see Taelyn from Baring Grudge in this dress. The full skirt could hide a few explosives and she would have an arm designed to match it. Perhaps the mechanical arm would light up and cause the material to sparkle even more.

I think the floral and leaf design on this dress would appeal to Joan from Releasing Rage. It would remind her of the agri-lot where she grew up. The horizontal lines would appeal to the engineering side of her.

The classic lines of this dress might appeal to history-loving Quinn from B Free. B would worship at her feet. (grins)

The drama in this gown would appeal to Princess Nancy from Testing Truth. (smiles) Her Mom-Of-Her-Heart might try to talk her into having this fabricated in pink, however.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – April 24th

I received first round edits for Provoking Odium, the first story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in June), this week.

Ugh. The revisions were extensive. We’re talking burn half the story to the ground an rewrite it.

BUT stars, the rewrite is SO much better. Provoking Odium now hits me in the feelz so hard. (grins) I think my editor will love this revised story. And I suspect you’ll love it also.
