Muse Food – Glaciers And Changing Landscapes
When the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I visit Alaska, we see the impact the retreating glaciers have and have had on the landscape there.
The glaciers carve into rock. They transport other rocks thousands of miles. They create new lakes and streams, which, in turn, change the area around them.
The glaciers are a land-changing force. And it prompts me to think about what land-changing forces are impacting the alien planets and other settings my stories occur in.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – September 24
Intrepid Encounter, the fifth core story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing in November), remains with my Awesome Editor. I suspect I’ll likely receive the second round of edits this week.
Hacking Hazard, this year’s FREE short story (available in December with no pre-orders), is ready for edits. I’m merely waiting for the edits to be completed on Intrepid Encounter before sending them to my Awesome Editor.
This upcoming week, I’m spending some concentrated time with the Dear Wonderful Hubby, friends and family. (smiles) And I’ll be thinking about the next cyborg romance.

The Changing Of The Seasons
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I live in a corner of the universe where seasons change.
Currently, we’re shifting from Summer to Fall/Autumn.
The leaves are changing colors. The grass is turning yellowish brown. The Mafia Squirrels are hiding pieces of bagels and peanuts in every corner of the back and front yards (including around the windows). The Canada Geese have made a pit stop on a nearby field.
It is a magical time of year. I absolutely love Fall/Autumn!

Relationships And The Dark Moment
There is a point in many romance novels called the dark moment.
It is when everything seems lost. The relationship seems to be falling apart. The main beings might not achieve their other goals. In my stories, they are often at risk of dying. They and their relationship are being severely tested and there seems to be no hope for these beings to pass these tests.
It is in this moment that the beings’ true characters and their true feelings are revealed. We learn about their coping under stress strategies. We and the other beings learn about THEM.
In a romance novel, the beings and their relationship survive this dark moment. And they are stronger beings and a stronger couple (or more) because of this. We, readers, know these wild kids will make it because, hey, they faced this dark moment and survived it, didn’t they?
Dark moment don’t merely happen in romance novels. The pandemic was and is a dark moment for many people, for example. As are other illnesses, losses (of all kinds), huge changes and other stressful situations.
When I talk with buddies and they ask me for relationship advice, I tell them they don’t truly know a person until they’ve gone through a dark moment with them. Almost everyone can be all sunshine and light during easy, happy times. Hard times, bad times show us who people truly are.
We’ve learned that from life and from romance novels. (smiles)

Throwback Thursday – Breathing Vapor
A more-clever-at-selling-books writer than I am would have written and published Crash And Burn as the second book in the cyborg world, right after Releasing Rage. Those were the cyborgs many readers wanted to read about next.
I, however, was still writing the cyborg romances purely for me at that point. (grins) And I wanted to explore the breadth of the cyborg world.
Rage, the hero of Releasing Rage, is a C Model. He has been in the Humanoid Alliance’s horrid ‘system’ for hundreds, maybe thousands of human lifespans.
Vapor, the hero of Breathing Vapor, is a K Model. He is newly manufactured and hasn’t yet survived the Humanoid Alliance’s full training system.
They are both cyborg warriors but they are very different beings. They have different pasts, different skill sets, different views on the universe.
I find that fascinating.
Breathing Vapor
Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.
He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.
She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.
Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion.

Cyborgs And Babies
The next section of the cyborg series will contain a romance featuring Choice, Rage and Joan’s eldest son. He’s a C Model like his dad and an engineer like his mom and he is now part of the Intrepid’s crew.
I’m often asked if there are more cyborg babies than the ones I’ve mentioned in stories.
YES! Many of the couples are having babies.
(Some are not having babies and will never have babies. Their lives are as happy and complete as the also childless Dear Wonderful Hubby and my lives are happy and complete.)
I merely don’t have a reason to mention those births in the stories I’ve written thus far.

Where Hacking Hazard Belongs
I shared the cover of Hacking Hazard, this year’s thank you (i.e. free) short story (releasing with no pre-order in December), last week and some super observant reading buddies noticed it had the series image for the Cyborg Unit series.
Should this story truly reside in the Cyborg Unity series?
Likely not. (sheepish grin) It isn’t connected to that series arc.
But it isn’t truly connected to…well…any series. It belongs in the Cyborg World. That’s for certain. But it is more of a standalone. As many of the short stories are.

Preserving The Harvest
This is a stock photo of cherry tomatoes but our harvest is as abundant. (smiles)This year, due to the abundance of insects, more specifically slugs, we mostly have the tomatoes to harvest from the garden.
And it has been an AWESOME tomato year. We have so many! Many more than we can eat while they’re fresh.
So we’re freezing them. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have a standalone freezer. We are chopping up the tomatoes, placing them in milk bags (this Canadian way of supplying milk makes the BEST freezer bags) and we’re putting them in the freezer. I don’t skin the tomatoes or blanche them. We’re fine with tomato skins in our soups and stir fries.
It is wonderfully reassuring to have a freezer filled with food. (smiles)

Muse Food – Orca Sculptures And Second Glances
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this wonderful sculpture of an orca (killer whale) near Hoonah, Alaska.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby had the clever idea of photographing it so the orca looks like she’s jumping into the sky.
If someone looked at it quickly, they might think it was a real orca.
But on a second slower glance, they’d realize it was a skillfully-wrought sculpture.
I like to craft characters in stories that way also.
At first glance, you might think, for example, Strive doesn’t pay attention to the world around him. He appears ‘lost’ in his art and in his own processing.
But once you get to know him, you realize he pays attention to EVERYTHING. He sees the details in a scene. He hears the nuances in a friend’s voice. He’s ‘lost’ but he’s lost in the moment.
