Throwback Thursday – Dark Strength
Balvan is physically the biggest hero I’ve ever written. He is a giant of a male. And he was designed for war. He loves to crush the skulls of his enemies under his big boots.
Kralj, the ruler of the Refuge, has wisely given Balvan the role of gatekeeper to the settlement. Balvan guards those gates fiercely.
As he guards Elyce, his human female, fiercely when she finds him.
Elyce’s enemies are dead. They merely don’t know that yet. (grins)

Gardening – Slug Collars And Squirrel Barriers
The most challenging part of gardening in my neighborhood is stopping the critters from eating or digging up our plants.
Some methods haven’t worked for us. This includes spreading eggshells, coffee grounds, hot pepper flakes/sauce, feeding the squirrels (They aren’t hungry. They’re bored.) and other tactics.
But we’ve discovered a few methods that DO work for us.
This is an image of one of my homemade slug collars and two layers (now) of stick ‘fencing.’
The homemade slug collars, crafted from old 2L ginger ale bottles, were free to make and they have been, as far as I can tell, very effective both from guarding plants from slugs and as a last line of defense against the squirrels.
The stick fencing, in this photo, was crafted from bamboo skewers from the dollar store. I prefer to use actual sticks. That looks more natural and is free. But I needed so much fencing this year that I ran out.
The stick fencing is to keep out squirrels and also bunnies. Multiple layers are needed as they easily plow through a single layer.
I had sections of wire shelving that I was no longer using and they serve as wonderful squirrel barriers for the tops of containers. It is important to leave a gap between the soil and the top of the container because the squirrels will try to reach between the wire to dig.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby bought these wire baskets at the dollar store. I put them over planted seeds or roots and then remove them when the plant reaches the top of the basket. By that time, the plant should be established and the squirrels are less likely to pull it out of the soil.
This is a dome made from chicken wire. It allows pollinators to access the plants while stopping the squirrels from digging the plants out. It is AWESOME for entire rows that require safeguarding. And I plan to reuse it every year until it falls apart.
This is the combination I crafted to protect my newly planted asparagus. I created a cylinder from chicken wire to prevent the asparagus from being eaten. The tomato cage gives the cylinder stability. The two layers of stick fencing stops the squirrels from digging the asparagus up.
All of these protections, unfortunately, have to be maintained. Sometimes the squirrels will dig through one layer and I’ll have to re-erect that barrier. But they do work…for us. Your situation might be different.

Muse Food – Beneath The Surface
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this cute seal in Ketchikan, Alaska.
This seal is a reminder that anything could be beneath the surface of a creek or a lake or an ocean. There’s suspense when a character dives into the water. What will they find there?
As there is suspense, in SciFi Romance, when a character lowers their spaceship past a layer of cloud or mist or darkness.
We can’t see past those barriers. And that means ANYTHING could be hidden behind them.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – June 9
Drift Would, the second core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series (releasing in July), should be good to go. (grins) It has been loaded to booksellers and should release on release day (which is a great day for it to release – laughs).
I continue to craft the first draft of Claiming Cure, the third core story in the Dauntless Cyborgs series (releasing in November). These stories are action-packed. And some of them also feature cyborgs from past stories. I enjoy ‘visiting’ with those couples (and more).

Venom And Betrayal
Spoiler Alert – This post will talk about the 2018 movie Venom and will contain spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this movie, you might wish to skip this post.
I finally watched Venom and stars, I enjoyed it. The main character(s) are definitely anti-heroes and delightful at that. The villain is believable and interesting. The female lead is strong.
She is so strong I don’t believe she’ll ever be stupid enough to take the main character back as a romantic interest.
Because he betrays her. Completely. She trusts him with her password and with her device and he abuses that trust for personal gain (to give himself an edge in an interview).
She gets fired. But, in my eyes, the relationship broke the moment he used her password.
There are some lines even a romance antihero can’t cross. I remember that when I’m crafting my stories.

Drift Would And Changing Appearances
Roshini, the human heroine of Drift Would (releasing in July), is a spy. She changes identities and appearances like some people change clothes.
One moment, she has black hair, orange skin, and a shapeless form. The next moment, she has blonde hair, pale skin and an attention-drawing chest. In yet another moment, she has brown hair, brown skin and a flat chest.
What does she naturally look like? She has been changing her appearance so long she isn’t certain. (grins)

Throwback Thursday – Crash And Burn
Crash And Burn is a three hanky read.
There is the expected romantic Happy Ever After for the main couple. The romantic Happy Ever Afters for past couples (or more), of course, also still hold.
But everyone else is at risk.
It is war. And loss is an unfortunate part of war.
Crash And Burn is an absolute favorite story for some readers. Yep, they liked it more than they liked Releasing Rage.
But for other readers…well…it is a challenging story.
And it is, hands down, no comparison, that most heart-shredding story I’ve ever written.
Crash was manufactured to be one of the best warriors in the universe. The cyborg has spent many human lifespans fighting the enemy. But, unlike his battle-loving brethren, he doesn’t enjoy killing. When he escapes the Humanoid Alliance, he vows to never end another life.
Then he meets Safyre, an infuriating human female, and he considers breaking his vow.
Safyre will do anything to save her friend, the being she loves like a sister. She’ll ravish a huge hunky cyborg, kiss his best friend, and invoke scorching hot desires the male never realized he could feel. Dark soulful eyes, a quick wit, and a tempestuous passion won’t divert her from her mission.
Love, and a planet-destroying weapon, however, might stop her permanently.

A Good Year For Butterflies And Bumblebees
It has been a GREAT year, thus far, in my corner of the universe for butterflies, bumblebees, lady bugs, worms and other small creatures.
That has been magical. Every time I look out my window, I see at least one tiny creature.
We had a cool, wet summer last year. That is rare in this time of climate change. And I suspect that insect-friendly weather greatly increased the populations.
That gives me hope that a cool, wet summer will boost insect populations elsewhere!

Strike Zone
A cyborg devoted to duty…and to her.

While attending a party, Kesser, the daughter of her planet’s leader, witnesses the abduction of her best friend and her best friend’s mate.
She’s determined to rescue them. Preferably without fracturing the fragile peace agreement her mom has crafted with the abductors’ planet.
The only issue is…she has never participated in a retrieval mission.
Searching for assistance, she approaches the mate’s guard. The male, with his big broad shoulders and deep growly voice, affects her like no other being ever has.
Kesser wants him. She trusts him. And she requires his stealth combat skills.

Strike is no guard. The D Model cyborg has been sent to the sector to discreetly investigate a potential planet-destroying situation.

Being Of Service
Kesser, the heroine of Strike Zone, has tried to be of service to her community and to her planet her entire lifespan. Her Mom, now the leader of their home planet, raised her to be part of the community, to give back, to try to make the universe a better place.
I admire that. And I try to do the same.
Which can be challenging for me as I treasure my solitude and prefer to be on the outskirts of any group.
The gardening is helping with that. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I tend to grow way too many vegetables for our own needs. So we give them away.
I force myself to get out there (grins) and knock on doors and offer them tomatoes and green beans and, hopefully this year, zucchini (courgettes).
It is a small way of giving back but I think it makes our neighborhood and our part of the universe a tiny bit better.

While attending a party, Kesser, the daughter of her planet’s leader, witnesses the abduction of her best friend and her best friend’s mate.
She’s determined to rescue them. Preferably without fracturing the fragile peace agreement her mom has crafted with the abductors’ planet.

When a curvy human female with big brown eyes requests his help with a rescue, he doesn’t hesitate to say yes. She’s his genetic match, the one being he was manufactured to protect.
She’s also traveling to the next planet he has to search. He plans to claim his female while he fulfills his responsibilities to his kind.
Neither Strike nor Kesser realizes the dangers facing them are far greater than they imagine. Their enemies are converging, and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.
