Throwback Thursday – Seeking Vector
Officially, the Cyborg Space Exploration starts with Choosing Chuckles. That is when the crew of the Reckless is assigned the task of exploring planets within the cyborg sector.
Unofficially, I view Seeking Vector as the first story. We first meet the crew of the Reckless in this story and it relays the romance of the ship’s Captain, Vector, and his human female, Kasia.
Seeking Vector adds depth to many of Captain’s decisions. We learn how important his crew is to him, how seriously he takes his duty to all on board his ship, explains why he respects Power but doesn’t like him very much.
It is a great story to re-read while you’re waiting for Testing Truth to release.
Seeking Vector
A cyborg with a secret… A female seeking the truth…
Vector, the C Model captain of the Freedom, is a cyborg many warriors wish to emulate. He fights fiercely, leads with honor, has earned the respect and loyalty of his crew. But no being, not even a cyborg, is perfect. Since arriving at the Homeland, Vector has been hiding a dark truth about his past. If his secret is exposed, he could lose everything – his position, his ship, and his life.
Kasia excels at uncovering secrets. Half a lifespan ago, her curiosity placed her on the Humanoid Alliance’s kill list. Now she has accessed information the cyborg council would prefer remain hidden. Their warriors are hunting her and won’t rest until she’s dead.
When Vector arrives on her battle station, all grim determination, gray skin, and bulging muscles, Kasia knows he has been sent to kill her. That doesn’t stop her from wanting the dominant cyborg. She senses the savage nature under the male’s controlled exterior, sees the mysteries in his brilliant blue eyes, craves the roughness of his touch. She will risk all she has to experience his embrace.
Kasia braved the cyborg council’s ire for a reason. If she doesn’t convince Vector to act on the information she uncovered, the enemy could destroy his home planet and render every cyborg in the universe immobile.
Can a doubting C Model warrior learn to trust and to love before it is too late?

Teenage Cyborgs
Future, Vector and Kasia’s son, makes an appearance in
Testing Truth. We find out more about this freeborn C Model and his challenges
on board the Reckless, reporting to his extremely protective Dad.
Future is physically fully mature. Cyborgs reach that point
within one solar cycle (one year). Emotionally…well…he’s a teenager. He might
have a little more control over his moods WHEN he wants to have that control.
His processors and other mechanics assist with that. But when he’s acting
without restrictions, he’s similar to a human teenager.
Young cyborgs, under Humanoid Alliance control, didn’t have
the luxury of acting like human teenagers. Their training was severe. If they
expressed emotion, they were decommissioned. If they refused commands or talked
back, they suffered the same fate.
So the freeborn cyborgs are the first generation to have that experience. It is almost…a privilege (though I suspect their parents don’t always view it as that). And it will make them very different from their parents.

Indie Publishing And Why There Won’t Be A Romance Novel Shortage

On a recent phone call with my Awesome Mom, she commented on
how there are very few movies being released to the movie channels and
streaming services. She talked about how her favorite TV shows no longer have
any new episodes.
She also worried she’d run out of new books to read.
I told her there was absolutely NO chance of that happening.
Why?
Because many of the series she loves are written by Indie
writers. These writers have always worked remotely. Their teams are small (my
team consists of a cover artist and an editor) and they usually deal with these
team members through email and other messaging systems. They sell primarily
through the online booksellers. Physical bookstores being open isn’t a big factor
for them.
The Great Pause hasn’t impacted our production systems. Our
muses might have taken the hits (or, in my case, they might be supercharged –
grins) but our systems are intact. Most of us will continue to release our
books on schedule.
Movies and TV shows, in contrast, require hundreds, sometimes
thousands of people. They have to be filmed on location. Actors and others have
to meet face-to-face. That’s difficult and dangerous to do under the current
circumstances.
I suspect the big Trad publishers, the huge companies often
located in New York, might experience a few hiccups. They rely more heavily on
physical bookstore sales. Hundreds of people are involved in production and
distribution. They aren’t as accustomed to working remotely.
But there are plenty of Indie Romance writers, like myself,
who can fill in any gaps.
You will NOT run out of Romance Novels to read. (smiles)

Dark Stories And Light-Hearted Characters

Testing Truth, the September Cyborg Romance release, will have
everything you expect from one of my stories—steamy scenes, violence, trauma,
pain, love, laughs. But it will also be lighter in tone than many of my core
cyborg romances.
Why?
Because Truth deals with tension, with conflict by teasing
others, by making jokes, by laughing at the ridiculousness of the universe. And
half of the story is written from his view. (grins) It isn’t a dark story
because he won’t allow darkness to hang around him.
It doesn’t matter how grim life gets, how bad the situation
is, the losses he is facing, Truth is determined to lighten the mood…and he is
usually successful at doing that. He has many human lifespans of practice at adding
levity to his surroundings. He’s very good at it.
Will there be scenes that make you cry? Likely. There are
several scenes that make me teary-eyed when I merely think of them. But expect
more laughs in this story than you usually find in one of my cyborg romances.
It is a magical quirk of the universe that I’m telling Truth’s
story at one of the times in history we need some lightness, some levity. I
find that so very interesting. And Truth would appreciate that ‘coincidence’.
He has a healthy respect for what humans often call fate.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – July 19th

My Facebook account is still under review, has been in that
no man’s land for 4 long weeks. (big sigh) I email every admin email address I
can find (including Zuckerberg’s) every week and I tweet at Facebook but I’ve
never received a reply. I suspect no humans are actually working in customer
service at Facebook and the bots are giving me the silent treatment.
I finished the first draft of Warlord’s Return, the sixth
and final Chamele Barbarian Warlord series (releasing in November), last week.
Woot! That’s always a huge accomplishment for any writer. This week, I’ll be working
on the second draft. The second draft is much more brain intensive than the
first draft. You might see some bizarre posts on this blog this week (grins).
I received the second round of edits on Testing Truth (releasing
September 15th) back from my Awesome Editor and have completed them.
I love this cyborg romance and I think you’ll really love it also. Truth and
his princess are magical together.
My agent said the idea I sent her would be a very challenging one to sell. The idea needs a big New York Publisher to work well so I’ve shelved it. I have a gazillion ideas. Input from advisors like my agent allows me to prioritize them, to figure out where I should spend my very limited time.

The Power Of Books During A Crisis

My Awesome Mom hasn’t left her small apartment since the middle of March. She hasn’t seen her kids or grandkids in person (except for my eldest brother who lives with her) since then. Being at high risk, she can’t allow anyone to visit her. Her beloved baseball has also been postponed. I worried she’d find all this challenging.
She is incredibly and marvelously happy.
Why?
One of the reasons she’s happy is because she has discovered
large print cozy mysteries. She has been reading at least one of those a day.
They give her an escape into another world, a world in which there is murder
(grins) but that murder is always solved and there is no pandemic.
These books have not only given her joy but they have greatly
eased my concerns over her emotional wellbeing.
Reading and writing stories during a crisis might seem like
a trivial use of our time. In the movies, during times of crisis, people are
constantly fighting to survive, battling the baddies. There’s no downtime. It
is all action all the time.
This is reality, however, and we need downtime. We also need
happiness. To experience moments of joy at a time like this, to have the
ability to leave all our troubles behind and escape is essential. It is
magical. It empowers us to handle everything else.
That’s not trivial. At all. That’s a gift, one we should cherish.

Warlord’s Return And Finishing A First Draft

I finished the first draft of Warlord’s Return (releasing in
November) yesterday. Woot!
It is a steaming piece of sh*t as all of my first drafts are
but the bones of the story are solid, the couple (Ariq and a heroine you haven’t
yet met) is magical together, and I believe you’ll really like this 6th
and final installment of the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series. We return to
the Refuge, the home of Kralj, so we interact not only with the Chameles but
also with the modified humanoids (the flying triplets are physically grown and
are causing chaos).
Completing a first draft is a time for celebration in the
Sax household. Heck, any win at all is a time for celebration and completing a
first draft is a HUGE win. As Jodi Picoult says, “You can always edit a bad
page. You can’t edit a blank page.” And as my awesome editor once told me, I
have to write the first draft. She can’t help me with that. She CAN help me
with everything else.
Even if the first draft sucks big hairy donkey balls, it is an
achievement. It gives writers and editors something to work with and that is a
very good place to be. Celebrate those first drafts.
If my schedule allows it (laughs semi-hysterically), I set
aside a first draft for a day or two, give myself some space, some distance
from it, before rolling into the extremely intense second draft. I tend to
continue thinking about the story and jot down ideas, solutions to plot holes,
etc to include when I pick it back up again.
The timing of this completed first draft is great because
Testing Truth (releasing in September) has returned from my awesome editor. I’ll
work on that today and this weekend.
Then on Monday, I’ll start the second draft.

That best isn’t the barren,

Why Writers Write Under Pen Names

Every so often, someone writing under a pen name does
something horrific. They betray a reader’s trust or they try to scam the system
or they do something else not-very-nice.
Following this type of revelation, there is often a call for
banning pen names. The people leading this call are usually either uninformed
about the writing business or they are people readers should think twice about
trusting.
Why do I say this?
Because many professional writers use pen names.
Stephen King has used multiple pen names (Richard Bachman, John
Swithen and Beryl Evans are known pen names of his). Jayne Ann Krentz officially uses THREE pen
names at the present ( Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle). Nora
Robert is also J.D. Robb, Jill March and Sarah Hardesty.
Cynthia Sax is a pen name. That is unlikely to shock anyone.
I’ve been open about that, likely TOO open about it. (grins) I’m certain some
of my buddies are tired of hearing that information.
It is easier to list the few professional writers who HAVEN’T
used pen names rather than list the writers who do use pen names.
Why Do Writers Use Pen Names?
There are a gazillion reasons why writers use pen names.
They might want to signal that they write in a certain niche
or they are writing in a different niche than the one they normally write in. Jayne
Ann Krentz writes Romantic Suspense. Amanda Quick writes historicals, for
example.
They might write so many books; a publisher can’t handle
their output. That’s one of the (many) reasons Nora Roberts publishes her
romantic suspense novels under J.D. Robb.
They might not want one of their readerships to find certain
books. A great example would be a writer who writes both steamy romances and
children’s books. She wouldn’t want her kiddie readers to find those very adult
books.
In my case, I don’t want the friends and family of my very religious
and extremely Awesome Mom-In-Law to find my steamy romances. She has been wonderful,
supports me so much, and I would never want my writing to hurt her in any way. (We
have to protect the ones we love, don’t we?)
I know some writers who are hiding from exes and other bad
people. They feel safer writing under pen names.
Maybe the writer’s books under one pen name didn’t sell well
and publishers are nervous to take a chance on her next absolutely awesome
novel. A new pen name gives this wonderful book and this gifted writer a fresh
start.
The writer’s real name could be long or complex or she might
not like it very much. Or she might want to honor a loved one by using a part
of that loved one’s name.
Maybe it is easier for her to write truthfully, with full
emotion, if she feels no one knows those are her emotions on the page or if she
pretends she’s a separate person.
Maybe it is easier for her to tackle criticism of her work if
it is published under a pen name. The editor or reviewer isn’t criticizing HER.
It is her author persona that is being criticized.
Maybe the writer uses a pen name because it is safer for her.
Writers, especially female writers, receive some ‘interesting’ messages. Some
of these can be quite scary. We’re talking go-to-the-police-right-away levels of
terrifying. A pen name makes a writer a little bit more difficult to track down.
Some writers use pen names because…hey, they’re fun to use.
We feel like superheroes with our secret identities. (grins)
There are many, many more reasons, too many to list here.
Would Eliminating Pen Names Eliminate Bad Behavior?
Short answer – No.
Bad people are bad people. They don’t play by the rules so creating
a new rule around pen names is unlikely to stop them. And it WILL inconvenience
a lot of good people, honest people, people who would never betray their readers’
trust.
Also, unless the writer shares the information or the pen
name is clearly a pen name (a name like Man Titty, as an example – grins), we don’t
know who is writing under a pen name. It would be an administrative nightmare
to track this and there are other areas we should be focusing on.
Pen names are a part of the writing world. They’ve been
around since the beginning of publishing and I suspect they will be utilized
forever.
I am extremely grateful for this option.

Vivarium And Aliens Thinking Like Aliens

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched Vivarium on the weekend.
This movie has romantic elements but it is NOT a Romance.
Don’t expect a Romance ending.
It is also a SciFi Fantasy. The world and premise have HUGE
plot holes in it. They are intriguing but they make no d@mn sense.
For example, there is a huge amount of effort expended for
very little payback and I’m almost certain aliens with that amount of power
could design a more efficient means of achieving the same results.
If you plan to watch this movie, put logic aside and simply
enjoy it.
Because it IS an enjoyable movie. The world is fresh and interesting
and it sparked my muse.
Most alien movies feature an alien species that looks excitingly
different but thinks very similarly to humans. One of the things I loved about Vivarium
is…they flip this. The aliens in it look similar to humans yet they THINK very
differently.
And it isn’t due to culture as it is with the aliens in many
of my stories. The BRAINS of the aliens in Vivarium are different. They can’t
dream, as one example, and it was implied they don’t have the capacity for imagination
or creative thought.
Imagine not being able to imagine. Yeah, that freaked me out
a bit. Because much of what we do every day is based on creative thought. That’s
how we tackle problems we face for the first time.
And sleep for these aliens must be endless darkness. I LOVE
dreaming. That is one of the many enjoyable parts of my day…or night. (grins) Dreaming
is like watching a movie that has been especially filmed for me.
I am unlikely to craft an alien hero/heroine who has a different type of brain. Why? Because I adhere to Common Ancestor Theory with my humanoid aliens. That proposes that all humanoids and humans come from one common ancestor, which is why my aliens can make babies with my humans. Their genes are extremely similar. That means their brains would be extremely similar also.
But for writing buddies who don’t adhere to Common Ancestor Theory, messing around with the brains of aliens can be an awesome variation in your worlds. It would cast ripples across every facet of your societies and make them excitingly different.

Other Chameles view him as the
enemy.
She sees the warrior hero he never
believed he could be.

Tolui is a Warlord in search of a planet
to rule. He has been leading his fellow clones in a stealth battle, fighting
for both control of the Chamele sector and the right to exist. The brave warriors
he commands warrant respect, and they deserve the best.
That best isn’t the barren,
dangerous terrain on Chamele 4. When Tolui crashes on that planet’s surface, he’s
determined to leave it as soon as possible. The tiny human female rescuing him
might be as beautiful and as wild as the land she inhabits, but her flowing
words, trusting gaze, and enthralling submission won’t stop him from rejoining
the war.
After many solar cycles of living
alone, Lea is overjoyed when a tall, scarred, muscular warrior falls from the sky.
Her savage stranger is strong and severe, and he makes her feel safe, an
emotion she hasn’t experienced in a long, long time.
He also insists they must part.
Before they do, she’ll show him the splendor of her home, and she’ll enjoy his
big form, collecting passionate moments she can revisit when she’s solitary once
more.
Every additional moment Lea and
Tolui spend together increases the chance they’ll both die. Lea is being chased
by female-hating fiends. Tolui is being hunted by the best bounty hunters in
the universe. War will soon arrive on their threshold, and the blood spilled
might be their own.

The Cyborg’s Secret Baby – Free For A Limited Time

Every once in a while, I run a sale on an older title. Today, The Cyborg’s Secret Baby is FREE everywhere. This is a standalone story, one of my favorite Cyborg Romances and it often is ‘lost’ because it isn’t officially part of the Cyborg Sizzle series. I LOVE that it will have a bit of a spotlight put on it.
The Cyborg’s Secret Baby
A fierce cyborg warrior and his curvy human female share a
no-longer-so-little secret.
Stealth, a K Model cyborg, knows his passion for Zebrina,
the commander’s human daughter, is forbidden, yet he can’t resist the curvy female.
He craves her touch, cherishes her sounds of pleasure, would do anything to
keep her safe.
When he’s faced with the choice of protecting his fragile
human or living to see the next sunrise, he chooses her, always her, sending
Zebrina halfway across the universe to safety. He doesn’t realize their stolen
moments had consequences neither of them believed possible.
After hearing her warrior died in battle, Zebrina focuses on
the last gift he gave her. Doing what is right for their child is her sole priority.
She will put their son’s happiness first, even if that means choosing another
male over the love of her life.
The Cyborg’s Secret Baby is a STAND-ALONE story loosely
connected to the Cyborg Sizzle series.
It is also a Second Chance Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a
dark, gritty, often-violent universe.
