Meteor Shower Wonder

Stock Art Crafted By And Indirectly Purchased From: JohanSwanepoel

Last night, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I yet again
ventured outside to gaze at the stars. It was one of the peak days for the Perseid
meteor shower in our corner of the universe, a great night to look at the falling
debris left by the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

And it WAS a great night. One of the meteors we saw was so
big and so bright; it scared me a bit. It looked like a scene out of one of
those asteroids-hitting-the-Earth disaster movies I love so very much (My
favorite of those is Deep Impact. I enjoyed the government trying to initially
cover it up angle.) I half-expected to feel the force of it.

Thankfully, it burned up before hitting our planet. All it did was give the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I a magical moment and leave us with a great memory.

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

***

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The
cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts
every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel
structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual
entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is
dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her
estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been
trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her
own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain
dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his
laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever
has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with
the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This
cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish
to see another sunrise.

Testing Truth – The Duties Of A Princess

Nancy, the heroine of Testing Truth, is a princess. I looked
for someone who would appreciate Truth’s drama and add more excitement to his
lifespan and she is definitely that being.

Royalty on Royaume (Royaume means Kingdom in French) is similar
(but not the same) to a mishmash of European Royalty past and present here on
Earth. The crown is passed from 1st born to 1st born. Gender
isn’t a consideration. The current ruler is a Queen, Nancy’s mother.

Nancy is the Queen’s second child and is considered to be
the ‘spare.’ Her older brother, the Crown Prince, is expected to wear the crown
some day in the future.

As the spare, Nancy has a little more freedom but she also
has more dangerous responsibilities. She is expected to marry a ruler of
another planet, forge a strong alliance for Royaume and she is assigned roles
that are too perilous for her older brother.

These dangerous duties are why she needs Truth. (grins)

Meteor Showers And Inspiration

Stock Art Crafted By And Indirectly Purchased From: Rost-9

The Perseid meteor shower is happening right now (the peak days for North America are Tuesday and Wednesday this week). Earth is passing through the debris left by the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

I LOVE meteor showers. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I once
flew through one and it looked like one of those scenes in Star Wars when the Millennium
Falcon travels through hyperspace. It was one of the (many) highlights of my
life and I will never forget it.

This week, we will definitely be dousing ourselves with bug
spray (the mosquitoes have been fierce this year), grabbing a comfy blanket and
spending some romantic dates outside in the dark. (grins)

I suspect the writing will be super inspired this week!

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – August 9th

Nothing is happening with my Facebook accounts. They are in perma-review. I don’t think I’ll be back on Facebook before September. But hey, I’m merely an email away. (smiles)

Last week was a false start on the Holding Hoarse, the December free cyborg romance short story. I wrote two chapters and the words stopped. This usually means my characters made a wrong decision or I forced them to do something they would never do.

Which is exactly what happened.

The week wasn’t a waste of time. I learned about Hoarse and his heroine. I have gathered insights on them. I might not use these on the page but they will give my portrayal of Hoarse and his heroine a fullness they might have not otherwise had.

I have a better understanding of how I should tell their story. So I’m super optimistic this upcoming week will be a great writing week. (grins)

I should receive first round revisions on Warlord’s Return (releasing in November) on Friday. I’m crossing my fingers the story works for my Awesome Editor and she deems it revisable and worthy of my reading buddies. I think that should be the case (Ariq and his heroine are magical together) but I’m not the best judge of my own stories. (laughs) I love them ALL!

Oh and promotion-wise, I’m having some fun and talking about Dark Thoughts this week. I love Kralj and Dita so very much. It is nice to spend some more time with them.

The Case Of Awesome Mom And The Missing Books

Stock Art Crafted By And Indirectly Purchased From: aruba200

I’m fortunate to have an absolutely wonderful and so very entertaining Mom. Here is part of the conversation I had with her yesterday.

***

Cynthia Sax: (on phone) Did you get the shipment of books on
Wednesday?

Awesome Mom: No! I didn’t get any books. I thought you
forgot about me.

Cynthia Sax: I’d never forget about you. (I send her a snail
mail letter every week and call her at least once a week.) I’ll track it down
with Amazon. It must have gone to the wrong address.

(2 hours later)

Awesome Mom: (calls back) I checked and no one has received my
books.

Cynthia Sax: You checked with the mail room?

Awesome Mom: I checked with everyone. Sometimes my mail goes
to (x apartment building) and (y house) and (relays a long and very specific
list of addresses).  I called them and they
haven’t seen it.

Cynthia Sax: (blinks) You called someone at (x apartment building)?

Awesome Mom: You can’t just call one person. (scoffs like I’m
an amateur) I called the lady with my same apartment number and I called their
mail room and I also talked with their maintenance staff. None of them have
seen my books.

***

(grins) That’s my Mom.

She has NO internet access, doesn’t own a computer but she
has a phone (a landline) and decades of experience watching CSI.

I suspect in a week she’ll have located the delivery person.

If her books are anywhere in her city, she’ll find them.

While she does that, Amazon is sending her replacement
copies.

Something Borrowed And To Be Continued

I finally watched the 2011 romantic comedy Something Borrowed
this week. This movie is based on an Emily Giffin book with the same title.

I resisted watching this movie and reading this book based
on the premise – A woman falls in love with her best friend’s fiancé. Yes,
ouch. There are only two outcomes I can predict with that premise – either the
woman ends up broken hearted or a close friendship ends. I like happy endings
and neither of those outcomes are happy.

I won’t talk about that in this post. What I wanted to talk
about is the ending. Don’t worry. This will be fairly spoiler-free.

The ending is a Romance Novel sexy brother ending amplified.

In what I call a sexy brother series (other writers have other names for this type of series), every story has a couple (or more) with their own romantic happy ever after BUT another intriguing character or couple (or more) is also introduced in their story.

Seasoned Romance Novel readers such as myself (and I suspect you) know that character or couple (or more) will have their own story told next or soon after. This is often implied rather than outright stated.

Why isn’t it outright stated?

Because a gazillion things could prevent that next story from being published. And if the next story isn’t ever published, making a too obvious link between the two stories will hurt our enjoyment of the first story. I can’t recommend to buddies a book 1 that needs a book 2 if the book 2 will never be published.

The odds of a next movie being produced are even lower than
the odds of a next book being published. Yet Something Borrowed ends with a
very strong link to the next movie, a movie that 9 years later hasn’t happened
and likely will never happen.

The link might have been forgivable if it hadn’t been for
the message they placed at the end of the movie – To Be Continued…

These three words took away my ability to think of Something Borrowed as a completed story or film. There was no doubt left in my mind. I had watched only a portion of the story.

It was frustrating and completely unnecessary and is a great
lesson for writers everywhere. Unless we are certain there will be a next
story, we should think carefully before strongly linking stories.

Note: I now self-publish all my stories which means, barring any huge disasters, I’m in complete control over my next stories. I can talk about Power’s story because, if there is any life left in my 40-something currently-relatively-healthy form at all a year from now, Power’s story WILL be written and, soon after that, released.

I still prefer that my stories stand on their own as I know not all heroes or heroines or premises appeal to all reading buddies. And hey, things happen.

Throwback Thursday – Breathing Vapor

As I’m crafting the first draft of Holding Hoarse, the December FREE cyborg romance short story, I often think about how the heroine would be a huge hit with the assorted offspring Vapor and Mira have adopted over the solar cycles.

I love Vapor and Mira. I loved them in Breathing Vapor and I love who they currently are, how they have evolved and grown. Their love is even stronger now than it was when they first met.

Breathing Vapor

Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.

He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.

She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.

Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion.

Traveling Through Books

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I LOVE to travel.

Whenever we make big financial and time decisions, we ask
ourselves, “Will this hamper our traveling?” If the answer is yes, we will try
to tweak the decision until it is a no.

Since I’ve quit the business gigs and have been writing full
time, we’ve been going somewhere almost every month. That might be a day trip
to a nearby town. (grins) Or it might be a longer, fancier vacation. We see a
new place, experience new things, meet new people.

That all changed during the Great Pause.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I haven’t traveled since the
middle of March. Well, we haven’t PHYSICALLY traveled. Thankfully, we have the awesome
option of traveling through books. That is calming my wandering soul a wee bit.

Whenever I feel like I need to escape the new normal for a bit,
I open an ebook and read. I can visit Regency England, present day Manhattan,
different planets, different worlds. I travel for the length of the story.

That is SUCH a gift!

Cyborgs As Explorers

One of the (many) things I love about the Cyborg Space Exploration
part of the larger Cyborg series is that it places the cyborgs in a very
different role than they normally enjoy.

Cyborgs were manufactured by the Humanoid Alliance for one
main reason—to fight battles. They were designed to kill other beings. That’s
their primary skill and one of their great pleasures.

Ending a being’s lifespan doesn’t require communicating with
that being or learning a being’s culture or respecting them. It might be emotionally
easier if cyborgs didn’t do that. They had very little interaction with other
species, other than figuring out how to defeat and kill them.

Exploring planets and collecting genetic information on the locals
are very different tasks. It is a peaceful mission (it makes no sense to
collect genetic information on beings they will kill). Communicating with other
beings, learning their cultures, respecting them makes that mission easier to
complete.

The cyborgs have made mistakes while undertaking this
mission. That’s to be expected. It is a brand new role for them. But they have
also learned and grown as beings. They aren’t the same warriors they were in
Choosing Chuckles.

And because cyborgs share information, ALL of the cyborgs
have changed. Each encounter has taught them something new.

I’m excited to see how the events in Testing Truth will
change the warriors.

The Choices Characters Make

I had a dream about a short story last night. This story has
many variations and is attributed to many different writers and I’ve been
hearing it since I was a little girl. (If you know of writers/TV shows who are associated
with telling it, please let me know and I’ll list them on this post.)

***

Bill, standing at a bus stop, watches as a man in a bright yellow
Lamborghini speeds by him. The man is laughing and seems to be having the time
of his life.

“Man.” Bill blows out his breath. “I would do anything to
have a car like that.”

“You’d do anything?” An elderly man turns to him.

“I’d do anything.” Bill nods.

“What if I told you I could grant you your wish?” The elderly man leans closer to him. “You would receive a car exactly like that one. But.” He holds up one of his index fingers. “In payment for that wish, one hundred people you have never met would die before their time.”

“You’re not serious.” Bill scoffs at the outlandish offer.

The elderly man meets his gaze. An unnatural light gleams in his eyes. “I’m deadly serious.” An awe-inspiring power radiates from him.

F*ck. The man was serious. Bill stares at him. “I’d receive a Lamborghini?”

“You’d receive a Lamborghini.” The elderly man’s head dips.

“And I wouldn’t know the hundred people who’d die?” He wanted
that confirmation.

“They’d be complete strangers.” The elderly man’s head dips again. “Consider this offer carefully. Once you agree to it, it can’t be undone.”

Bill hesitates for a moment. “What is there to consider? I don’t know the people and I’d have a Lamborghini. I agree to the deal.”

“I suspected you’d agree to it.” The elderly man grins as a bright yellow Lamborghini rolls to a stop before them. “Thousands of complete strangers have already accepted my offer.”

When I first heard the story, I thought the message was to
not make deal with folks with magical powers. (grins) Like I mentioned, I was a
kid.

Now, I realize the true message. And I find it bizarre that
so many of us have to make a similar decision almost every day now. Maybe we
have ALWAYS had to make these choices. But now, they are emphasized with all
the discussions around mask-wearing, social distancing, limiting contact with others.

We are all Bill and we are all facing the same choice he did—our personal happiness vs the lives of complete strangers.

Note: If the universe is taking suggestions about which stories
to next bring into this timeline, I have a list of cyborg romances I wouldn’t
mind seeing unfold. (grins)
