Throwback Thursday – Warlord Sky
Warlord Sky is a special story for a number of reasons.
It is the first story in the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series.
Warlord Sky features a pilot hero. Many of the heroes in my stories are warriors. Qulpa can fight but he prefers flying.
This story also features a non-human heroine. Nayan, the head of Ship and Weapons Design for Khan, is a Chamele but due to her…challenges, she is extremely human-like.
If you’re looking for a steamy alien romance that is a little bit different, something to bust you out of a reading rut, Warlord Sky might be just the story you’re seeking!
Warlord Sky
No one grounds a barbarian warrior.
Qulpa, a Chamele warrior, lost everyone he loved in the brutal Succession Wars. Flying is the only thing that brings him joy. Serving as his team’s pilot is the sole duty he has left. Then a horrific crash leaves him injured and unable to fly.
The one being who can help him is also his gerel, the female destined to be his. She insists she doesn’t feel their connection. Qulpa is certain his beautiful mate is lying and nothing will stop him from finding out why.
Nayan knows the injured barbarian is her warrior, her one chance at a forever bond. His dominance makes her feel safe. His gentle touch inflames her passion. His kisses scorch her very soul. The tall muscular male tempts her as no one else has.

Cyborgs, Standalones And Series That Build
I write almost all the core stories to be read on their own. You should enjoy them if they are the first stories of mine that you’ve read.
But folks who have read all the cyborg and Refuge/Dark Thoughts and Chamele stories will more fully understand the nuances of each story.
Because the cyborg world definitely builds.
I’m mentioning this because B Free, November’s release, will be the most connected story I’ve written thus far. We return to the Refuge for a bit. A revelation in Warlord’s Return comes to fruition. Rage and Joan from Releasing Rage make an appearance.
Folks should be able to enjoy B Free if it is the first story they’ve read of mine. But, wow, if you’ve been with me for a while (tackle hugs), prepare to see some beloved faces from the past!
And yes, Power should be very, very scared.

Baring Grudge And Mentors Who Don’t Realize They Are Mentors
I’ve been lucky to have many awesome mentors in my life. Some…or many of them (grins) didn’t know they were my mentors. Recently, I thanked one of them and she was surprised I saw her in that light. She was merely trying to pass along what she knew, she told me.
Which is exactly what a mentor does. (laughs)
Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, considers Medic Neidan and Mulls to be her adopted mother and father. They are also her mentors, beings she approaches for advice and tries to emulate.
Medic Neidan knows she holds that honored role, though I suspect she’ll never truly realize how much Taelyn loves her.
I suspect grumpy, surly Mulls has no clue how important he is to Taelyn.
I suspect you have no clue how much you mean to someone out there in the universe. (big hugs) You likely also don’t realize how much you mean to me.
You’re making a difference and you don’t even know that. Not knowing doesn’t make it less true, however.
You matter. Never doubt that.

Once Malice frees himself, he plans to achieve both of his goals, taking Medic Illona captive and ending her research…permanently.
Illona is as much a prisoner as the cyborgs she experiments on. Since her arrival at the Human Alliance’s secret laboratory, she has carefully, stealthily, crafted a plot to free her test subjects. To conceal her covert activities, the medic has been forced to harm beings rather than heal them.
The being she has damaged the most is also the cyborg she fiercely desires— Malice, a huge, gray-skinned, blue-eyed C Model with massive hands and a voice deeper than space. He hates her, has good reason to do so, and, when he’s freed, there’s a high probability he’ll kill her.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – August 22nd
I’m almost finished the first draft of Needing Valor, this year’s thank you short story (this will be available in December). I love Valor and his heroine so very much. (grins)
I hope to complete the second and third draft this week but I also expect to receive the second round of edits for B Free back from my Awesome Editor. So I might have to delay finalizing the short story until I’ve completed those revisions.

Baring Grudge And the Other Retrievers
In Chasing Mayhem, we meet several female Retrievers. Imee, one of them, finds her cyborg warrior during that story. Kutta, another Retriever, finds her fated mate in Baring Grudge.
A reading buddy asked me if the other Retrievers will find their destined warriors.
I don’t know. I don’t even know who Valor’s female will be and I’m in the midst of writing his story (Needing Valor – December’s thank you short story) right now. (laughs)
Yes, I’m a mess. And I’m working with cyborgs. They have placed me on need to know only status. Those blasted (yet wonderful) warriors don’t tell me anything extra…likely because I tend to share those insights with you.
I suspect, however, if I continue writing in the cyborg world (which I plan to do), other Retrievers will eventually find their matches.

Leap Year And Character Goals
Please Note: This post will share spoilers about Leap Year. If you’re like me and have been delaying watching this 2010 movie, consider skipping this post until you’ve seen it.
I finally watched Leap Year! I’ve been avoiding watching it because the premise – a woman seeking to propose to her longtime boyfriend and then falling in love with a different guy—had a high likelihood of me feeling sad for one of the men. But it was on the TV and it captured my attention within mere moments of watching it.
Leap Year has its issues yet I found it entertaining and it does some things VERY well.
One of the things it does well is show us the difference between what a character thinks she needs and what she truly needs.
Anna, the heroine, grew up with a father she couldn’t depend upon. She is looking for safety and she interprets this as financial safety.
Her longtime boyfriend gives her financial safety and that’s it. He is a successful surgeon and makes a sh*tload of cash.
But we see from the start he doesn’t give her emotional security. He doesn’t hesitate to leave her alone when they’re surrounded by strangers. He doesn’t offer her the stability of marriage. He isn’t there for her in any way other than financial.
Anna takes matters into her own hands and decides to go to Ireland and propose to him. Everything possible goes wrong and she ends up in a rural area with the snarly, grumpy hero.
At first, Declan, the hero, looks like he’s the absolutely wrong guy for her. His restaurant/hotel/bar is in financial peril. His kitchen is about to be repossessed. And he refuses to help her. In any way.
He eventually relents. They bicker. Anna isn’t at all impressed with him.
That attitude starts to soften when Declan refuses to abandon her, trailing her all over the country. He is THERE for her, even when she destroys his beloved car. He doesn’t yell. He is quietly, grumpily behind her literally every step of the way.
Her view of him significantly shifts when he fights baddies for her. He might not be able to make her feel financially safe but he makes her feel physically and emotionally safe. The man even cooks for her, showing he can care for her in that way also.
This is a romance so Declan does become financially stable also but Anna doesn’t know this when she chooses him. All she knows is she feels safe with him. She can depend on him. He is there for her.
And that is exactly what she needs to secure lasting happiness.

Throwback Thursday – Ghost Of A Machine
Ghost is one of my all time favorite cyborgs. He has been through so much. He tried to save beings and failed to do so and that broke him emotionally. This cyborg warrior is dealing with tremendous trauma and stars, that pulls on my heart.
Lethe knows about being broken. She has dealt with harshness and is strong enough to stand toe-to-toe with Ghost’s inner demons.
The two of them are magical together.

Baring Grudge And The Planet Of Misfit Beings
In Baring Grudge, Mulls tells Grudge, “Welcome to the planet of misfit beings.”
This is a fun, light reference to the Island of Misfit Toys that first appeared in the 1964 TV Special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (that special features Rudolph, Hermey, and Yukon Cornelius).
TV stations would play this classic special every Christmas when I was a kid and I was fascinated by the island. I wanted to find it, live on it.
Like many kids, I was acutely aware I was different (as all of us are). I felt like I was a bit of a misfit toy myself and thought I would fit right in with Charlie-In-The-Box and the ostrich-riding cowboy. It seemed like such a magical place.

Baring Grudge And Resistance
My Awesome Mom has always told me I’m perverse. If someone tells me not to do something, that’s exactly the thing I yearn to do.
Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, is very similar.
As Grudge notes, “Resistance was her default setting.” She’s a fighter, a questioner of commands, a being intent on obeying her own rules.
That is how she has always tackled challenges and she’s seen a LOT of challenges in her lifespan. Being a fighter has worked for her. She might soften her responses in the future but I doubt she’ll ever fully abandon that strategy for dealing with the universe.
Which is awesome for Grudge as he NEEDS someone who will push back, who will battle him on his decisions and his often wild schemes. He loves Taelyn’s resistance.
