Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – September 5th
I set Needing Valor, the December thank you short story, aside and spent the entire week with the Dear Wonderful Hubby. We didn’t do anything super exciting but we were together and that is always fun.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby makes me laugh and he seems to find me hilarious. (grins) He has a weakness for terrible jokes and I’m the master of those as you all know. Bad puns are my specialty.
This upcoming week, I’m returning to Needing Valor with fresh eyes. I expect it to be sent to my Awesome Editor by the 15th.
The next story on the schedule is Seizing Power. I am SO looking forward to that one! (rubs hands together with glee)

Welcome To September!
Woot! It is September.
September, for me, will always be tied to back to school (even though I haven’t attended a formal school for decades – grins). I LOVE shopping for new pens and notebooks and other ‘school’ supplies in September. I like to see what all the little kiddies are wearing or are excited about, hear their chatter as they trek to school. It fills me with joy.
September comes from the Latin word septem, which means seven. It was once the seventh month of the Roman calendar. It is now the ninth month but the name was never changed.
Best wishes to buddies born this month! (tackle hugs) May you and everyone else have an awesome September!

You Are A Warrior
Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, is a warrior. She might not fight beings on a battlefield but she does blow up the enemies’ space stations.
Medic Neidan, her guardian, is a warrior. She heals beings, doesn’t kill them but she is still bravely fighting her own battles against an often cruel and hurtful universe.
You are a warrior also. Right now, you might be fighting to ensure you and your loved ones are safe from the pandemic. You might be battling to keep a roof over your head or to get through the day or to carve out a bit of happiness in a rather dark world.
All that matters. You matter. (big hugs)

Throwback Thursday – Seeking Vector
Vector, the Captain of the Reckless, and Kasia, his hacker female, will definitely make an appearance in Seizing Power, the fifth and final core story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in February).
There is tremendous tension between Vector and Power. That is illustrated in Seeking Vector, Vector and Kasia’s story. Vector has his own distinct view of honor. He also has secrets, secrets Kasia uncovers and keeps safe.

Godzilla vs. Kong And Communicating Without Dialogue
Spoiler Alert: This post might contain spoilers around the 2021 movie Godzilla vs. Kong. If you haven’t yet watched this movie, you might wish to skip the post.
I LOVE Godzilla. I also love Kong. I was super stoked to finally watch this movie.
Godzilla vs. Kong has its issues. You might wish to suspend all logic and knowledge of basic science while watching this movie. I went into the viewing merely expecting a good time and some awesome monster fight scenes and I was happy.
Godzilla vs. Kong is also set in the MonsterVerse (the same series as Skull Island) and it is helpful (yet not essential) to have watched the previous movies. Many of the characters (including Kong and Godzilla, of course) return.
One of the things I REALLY love about this movie is how the two main stars – Godzilla and Kong – communicate without speaking. They don’t rely on dialogue to express their thoughts and feelings. Kong works a little harder to communicate with the humans but when the two monsters are together, their expressions and body language are sufficient.
There is a scene at the end of the movie where the two monsters are facing each other. We scan to Godzilla, then to Kong, and back again and we know exactly what they’re thinking from their eyes (and their brows) and their stances. They move from “I’m going to beat you into the pavement” (fists clenched, bodies rigid and tilted forward, brows lowered) to “Would that effort be worth it?” (leaning slightly backward, raised brows, released fingers) to “I can’t be bothered to fight you at this time” (slumped shoulders, relaxed stance, brows at normal placement).
It is a scene I’ll study, dissect and learn from. I’ll use that knowledge in my future stories to reinforce the dialogue or perhaps to replace it completely.

Splitting A Series
I receive questions from quite a few writing buddies and a handful of reading buddies around why I’ve split the cyborg world into subseries.
It wasn’t really a sell more books strategy.
Sure, when I split a series, there are more entry points for new-to-me readers and more permafree first in series opportunities (as well as BookBub possibilities).
But that is offset by some booksellers having systems that greatly favor long series. Apple, for example, sends new release information to anyone who has ever purchased a book in the same series. Every time I start a new series, I start at zero. That’s not very effective.
I split the series because that’s how I think as a writer.
I can’t hold 20 future stories in my brain. (grins) I can barely hold 1. And I find a super long series daunting. I like 5 core stories. That’s manageable. If I apply myself, I can write that in a year and a half or less.
I also split the series because that’s how I like to read.
I like the way Lisa Kleypas, for example, splits her huge historical world into 5 (on average) book series. I can read 5 books and have the satisfaction of reading an entire series. That’s extremely fulfilling.
Then I can wait for a bit to start the next series. Or I can skip a series if the premise for that overall series doesn’t appeal to me (that hasn’t happened yet with Lisa Kleypas’ historicals). Or I can (gasp) stop. Yes, there will be things I’ll never uncover but there should be a satisfying stopping point.
You, as a writer or a read, might have different preferences. And hey, that’s okay! Do whatever brings you joy. Happiness is precious. Protect it.

My Awesome Editor had a look at the blurb for B Free, the fourth Rebel Cyborgs story (releasing in November), and there have been a few slight tweaks to the blurb.

The first blurb loaded is always a placeholder, a very rough, unedited version.
B Free
B is the last remaining B Model cyborg. All of his brethren, the beings he trained with, fought with, cared deeply for, have perished.
Or so he believes.
When he intercepts a communication mentioning the existence of one of his kind, he has to investigate its source. The message could be a trap set by his enemies. He’ll take that risk if it secures him the companionship he requires to be fully functional.
What he finds is a daring brown-eyed female who activates all his systems. She proudly proclaims she’s a researcher, brandishing that information like a weapon before her. He wants to kiss the sass off her beautiful face, protect her from the dangers around them, claim her forever.
Quinn is on a quest to locate the mechanics of an early version cyborg. She believes the information captured within that frame will give her valuable insights into the past.
When her mission goes zombie-like beings levels of wrong, she comes face-to-face with a living, breathing B Model. He has big hands, a primitive countenance, and stern hard lips crafted for kissing.
She doesn’t trust him. And she doesn’t have time to indulge her desires.
Their shared enemies are chasing them, would kill to get their precious specimens back. One minor mistake could reduce B and Quinn to a mere line in the databases of history.

My Awesome Editor LOVES B Free, the fourth story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in November). We’ve completed a few rounds of editing and the story is now with my Awesome Formatter (the Dear Wonderful Hubby). I fully expect B Free to release on time and I really think you’ll enjoy it. (grins)
I’m still working on the first draft of Needing Valor, this year’s thank you short story (releasing in December likely on BookFunnel). I’m having my usual first chapter issues. (grins) That happens with every story but especially with the shorter ones. It is important that they start in the right place.

Small Tasks Count
In Baring Grudge, Taelyn, the heroine, blows up Humanoid Alliance space stations. That’s a huge, bold, courageous task to take on.
She also tells a confidence-battered girl she’s a bada$$. That’s a quieter, quicker task to accomplish. But it also matters. That declaration changed Jasny’s life a bit. It changed the world a bit.
Here on Earth, we’re going through some challenges.
There are folks who are doing BIG things. They’re auctioning their Olympic medals to pay for a child’s surgery. They’re dedicating all their spare time to saving species. They’re battling mobs to save lives during a pandemic.
But there are also people doing smaller things. They’re picking up a piece of garbage when they visit a nearby park. They’re bringing the homeless woman on the corner a cold bottle of water on a hot, smoky day. They’re donating a dollar to plant a tree. They’re sending their kids to school with extra superhero-themed masks to give to classmates.
All these things matter. All these things make the world a better place.
Don’t discount the small things. They can make a difference. YOU can make a difference.

Why Cyborgs Often Have Human Females
An often repeated bit of advice given to SciFi Romance writers is the average reader tends to prefer human heroines in their M/F stories. The average reader is cool with heroes being cyborgs or aliens but they prefer the heroine to be human.
That’s not why many of my cyborg romances feature human heroines. It SHOULD be why. (sheepish grin) But it isn’t.
The reason is…genetics.
Cyborgs are half human. It is logical that the majority of their matches would be found within that species. Humans are closest to them genetically.
If we adhere to the common ancestor theory (which I do), humanoids and humans share a common ancestor and are linked genetically. That is why they can have viable offspring.
So it makes sense to me that some matches would be humanoids, especially humanoids that physically resemble humans. Cyborg-humanoid alliances would happen less frequently than cyborg-human bonds as they are further apart genetically.
Non-humanoid matches are unlikely. And producing viable offspring from that match has an even lower probability of happening. That probability isn’t zero, however. It COULD happen. I merely haven’t witnessed it yet.
