Two "Best of" Nods for THE FALSE PRINCE!

Goodreads released its nominations for Best Books of 2012, and THE FALSE PRINCE found a place in their Best Middle Grade and Children's list! It is a great honor to be there, especially amongst such greats as Rick Riordan's two latest releases, more than a few books often mentioned as Newbery candidates, the final ARTEMIS FOWL book, and Brandon Mull's fantastic series, THE BEYONDERS.
However, if you are a Goodreads member and feel like voting for THE FALSE PRINCE, I probably wouldn't object! (Okay, I would actually very much appreciate it!) You can vote here. Voting in the opening round will continue until Sat, Nov 10.

My sincerest thanks to Goodreads for the nomination and to Publishers Weekly for the inclusion on their list.
And I won't even tell about a conversation I had this week..
No seriously, I won't. If I do, they'll find me... J

Fantastic Fan Art
This was sent to me over the summer by an amazing young artist named Milah C. Those of you who are familiar with THE FALSE PRINCE will undoubtedly recognize the characters in her art. (Sorry for the folds in the paper.)
Many thanks for sharing your talents with me, Milah! For this, I am a fan of yours.
To other student artists out there, if you ever want to share your fan art of my books, I'd love to see it, whether or not you wish for me to post it here!

THE RUNAWAY KING Cover Reveal & Contest!
I am sooo excited to be able to finally reveal this cover. Several months ago, I was close to being able to reveal it, and then the decision was made to tweak it a bit. I really love the changes. Compared to the style of the FALSE PRINCE cover, this has more of a realistic look, and I think it serves the story well. My thanks to Scholastic, Christopher Stengel, the cover designer, and Ken Choi, who did the sword art.
Here is the Goodreads summary for THE RUNAWAY KING: A kingdom teetering on the brink of destruction. A king gone missing. Who will survive? Find out in the highly anticipated sequel to Jennifer A. Nielsen's blockbuster THE FALSE PRINCE!
Just weeks after Jaron has taken the throne, an assassination attempt forces him into a deadly situation. Rumors of a coming war are winding their way between the castle walls, and Jaron feels the pressure quietly mounting within Carthya. Soon, it becomes clear that deserting the kingdom may be his only hope of saving it. But the further Jaron is forced to run from his identity, the more he wonders if it is possible to go too far. Will he ever be able to return home again? Or will he have to sacrifice his own life in order to save his kingdom?
The stunning second installment of The Ascendance Trilogy takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of treason and murder, thrills and peril, as they journey with the Runaway King!
So, without further wordiness, here is the cover!
Now you may have already seen it on Amazon, but there is a difference.
Which brings me to the contest. Do you want to win a signed ARC of THE RUNAWAY KING? I've had lots of people contact me to request an ARC - well this is your first opportunity to win one. There are many ways to enter below.
And if it whets your appetite further, very few people have read this book so far, but here are a couple of the reviews I've seen (off Goodreads).
From 9/27: I fully believed it would be difficult to top The False Prince but the author did. Sage's voice is stronger, the adventure very intense and it all ends with another twist.
From 10/16: EVEN BETTER than its predecessor, this book knocked my socks off. KNOCKED THEM OFF. I gobbled this one up in one day. Yes, gobbled.
Okay, the contest is on and will continue until Saturday, November 10th...feel free to enter as many times as you want. For this contest, U.S. entries only please. Good luck!

The False Prince Playlist
I've been wanting to put together a playlist for THE FALSE PRINCE for months, but really didn't know how. I'm still figuring it out, to be honest. So here is a playlist, though you'll have to be registered on Spotify (I think) to play these songs. It's free registration though. In the meantime, I'll work on other ways to get a playable list up without registration anywhere.
There will be a playlist coming for RUNAWAY KING as well (and much earlier, now that I've mastered this incredibly basic skill).
If you have songs to suggest that I add, let me know!
"I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me, guaranteed." Thank you, Mr. Eddie Vedder, for a brilliant song that gave breath to a character ready for his story to be told.
It's an older song, but I think it speaks to a part of himself that Sage often struggles with.
Like the song, but love the lyrics for this book.
Sage doesn't fly, of course, so I'm not sure this song translates directly. But I do think he'd identify with several of these lyrics.
Sage, before he's taken to Farthenwood...
And these are songs I listened to a lot in the writing of The False Prince. For me, they're embedded in my mind now with certain scenes...
Such as when Sage is traveling away from the orphanage and first comes to Farthenwood...
When Sage and Mott talk to each other beside the river, shortly before they leave for Drylliad.
Or when Sage stands on the dais beside Kerwyn at the end of the book...

Monday Update
I know, the title suggests that I regularly do a Monday update, but since I don't, this is really more of a multi-Monday update as I pull in some highlights from the last few weeks.
THE SEQUEL:
For those who write me asking about the sequel to Book 1, the second book of the Ascendance Trilogy is called THE RUNAWAY KING. It is up on Goodreads (with a plot summary) here, and available for pre-order on Amazon here. I think it won't be very much longer before I get to do a cover reveal!
GIVEAWAYS:
JeanBookNerd.com is kindly hosting a giveaway of a signed copy of THE FALSE PRINCE as well as some signed book posters. You can find that and enter here through the rest of the month:
http://www.jeanbooknerd.com/2012/08/j...
I will say that there's something like 11,000 entries, so it's getting to the point where there are sort of long odds on actually winning. If you don't happen to win, please feel free to buy a copy of the book somewhere and then email me and I'm happy to send you a bookplate and a poster if you remember to ask for one.
COOL MENTIONS:
There's a lovely website called "The Best Books of" that creates various lists of best books for different categories. In a recent post, they listed THE FALSE PRINCE as one of the Best Children's Books of 2012.
http://www.thebestbooksof.com/bestboo...
But here's the best part! TFP also was listed as one of their best YA books too!
http://www.thebestbooksof.com/bestboo...
BESTSELLER LIST:
For the week ending September 2, TFP was on the Mountains and Plains Bestseller List. It squeaked in at #10, but considering that it's been out for six months, I was pretty darn pleased!

Interview with Peter Salomon
I don't often do guest posts, but this book sounds so interesting I definitely had some questions for Peter Salomon, debut author of HENRY FRANKS: A NOVEL, which will be released on September 8 (Saturday)! Peter is also an agent sibling, which just shows you what great taste our mutual agent has!
Here is the Goodreads summary for HENRY FRANKS:
A dark, psychological thriller about a boy's search for himself
Four thousand, three hundred and seventeen stitches, his father had told him once. All the King's horses and all the King's men had put Henry Franks back together again.
One year ago, a terrible accident robbed Henry Franks of his mother and his memories. The past sixteen years have vanished. All he has now are scars and a distant father—the only one who can tell Henry who he is.
If he could trust his father.
Can his nightmares—a sweet little girl calling him Daddy, murderous urges, dead bodies—help him remember?
While a serial killer stalks their small Georgia town, Henry unearths the bitter truth behind his mother’s death—and the terrifying secrets of his own dark past.
Sometimes, the only thing worse than forgetting is remembering.
Peter, thank you very much for being a guest here today. I think HENRY FRANKS is going to make a big splash in the literary world. I have just a few questions for you.
1. First, can you tell us a little about the story?
Sixteen-year old Henry woke up from a coma and learned from his father that he'd been in an accident that killed his mother and left him with no memory of anything before waking up. As he struggles to figure out who he is he begins to doubt the story of his life that his father has been telling him. Besieged by nightmares and physically scarred from the accident, he searches for answers while a serial killer stalks the small Georgia island he lives on and begins to suspect that maybe, just maybe, his father is the killer.
Or, what scares him more than anything as the gaps in his memory grow deeper and his nightmares grow worse, maybe it's him.
2. What inspired you to write HENRY FRANKS?
I originally started writing the manuscript as an 'adult' novel, focusing on a father raising his son to believe incorrect information about everything. What quickly became more interesting to me however were the reactions of the son to his unusual upbringing. So I tried figuring out what would cause a teenager to have so many doubts and questions about the story of his life. So I ended up with a Young Adult Horror novel after starting out with Adult Fiction.
3. There are a lot of mysteries that surround Henry and his life. For your writing style, did the mysteries come first and then you came up with the answers, or do you begin with the answers?
Oh, great question! Definitely the mysteries. Until I was actually finished writing I didn't know all of the answers. And by 'finished' I mean 100% completely finished after years of revisions. A number of reviews have commented on how well I kept the ending from being 'guessable' and one of the reasons for that is because as I was writing the first few drafts I was still debating exactly how the book would end. There were a number of different endings (one even had a SEVENTY page flashback to the father's point-of-view) and it was only through massive revision that I ended up with the ending the book has now. In other words: it was even a mystery to me. I wouldn't exactly recommend that writing strategy to anyone though!
4. What are you working on next?
I currently have a picture book out on submission and have just sent another picture book to my wonderful agent, Ammi-Joan Paquette, to see if that one (which I've been working on for the past 15 years) is ready to go out on submission as well. In addition, while HENRY was out on submission I wrote not one but two Young Adult novels (one Dystopian and one pure Action/Adventure/Thriller). I've been revising both of those, concentrating mainly on the Action novel (codenamed: HTRASH) and at present my agent is reviewing a proposal I've put together at the request of an editor for submission.
5. If someone wants to learn more about you and the book, where can they look?
I have my own website: www.peteradamsalomon.comat which I have a blog and other additional goodies and the book has a website www.henry-franks.comthat includes a first page excerpt and a photographic 'tour' of the book (the setting on an island off the coast of Georgia plays a very large role in the novel and a very talented friend of mine, Jon Cohen, graciously spent the time taking appropriate photographs that I was able to connect to various pieces of text. In addition, if any readers had their own photos that they thought would work for the 'tour' I'd love to add them! And, of course, I can be found at Twitter, Goodreads, and a Facebook 'fan' page under Peter Adam Salomon.
6. And finally, a quick round of questions. Don't think too hard!
Mountains or Beaches?
MOUNTAINS!! No question!! I am SO not a 'beach person'
Fruit or Chocolate?
Oh, this one's tough. I love fruit and could easily live on it except it's hard to do: lots of work goes in to eating fruit (finding, cleaning, etc) and I ADORE dark dark spicy chocolate and, thanks to new medical research actually get to eat it every day (in moderation and just a little at a time, but still...)
Outline or Pantster? (Do you write with an outline, or by the seat of your pants?)
Pantser! I have NO clue how people outline. I get too antsy to start actually writing to sit there and outline. I usually have just a vague idea of what the next couple of chapters should look like and I run into numerous problems because of that so I'd LOVE to be an 'outliner' but just can not do it. I had to outline HTRASH for the proposal and even though I had a 'finished' book to work off of still had trouble working up an outline.
Summer or Winter?
Winter! See the 'Mountain/Beach' answer. I'm a fall/winter person, definitely! One of the main reasons I've been so happy to have moved from New Orleans (with TWO seasons: Summer and 'Not-Quite-Summer' to North Carolina)
And the one place in the world you'd most like to visit one day?
Israel.
Thanks!!!

INFINITY RING 3 Cover Release
Book 1 of the INFINITY RING series is called "A Mutiny in Time." James Dashner opens the series with excitement, laugh out loud humor, and - dare I say it? - a lot of really interesting historical information. This gorgeous box went out to several of Scholastic's accounts to let them know about the books. It contains a poster signed by all six IR authors, an ARC of Book 1, and a sample insert that takes readers into the online game.
Book 2 is called DIVIDE AND CONQUER by Carrie Ryan. And the cover for Book 3, THE TRAP DOOR, was just released this week. They are every bit as brilliant, and the story just gets ever better as it continues to evolve.
Books 4 and 5 are in the writing and planning stages now with fabulous authors Matt De La Pena and Matthew Kirby. Then the torch passes to me. My plan is just to complicate everything so much that when I hand the series back to James for Book 7, he can sit for a few minutes and wonder how to tie up a few of the crazier threads I introduce.
Just kidding.
Sort of. James is up to the challenge.

Introducing Scholastic UK's TFP Website
I can hardly wait to tell you about this wonderful website for THE FALSE PRINCE, but first, just a little happy news: Nanmee Books just became the seventh foreign publisher to buy translation rights of Book 1 for Thailand. In that beautiful looking language, (if I'm correct) the title should look like this:
ปรินซ์เท็จ
Cool, eh? I'm not sure how to go about pronouncing that.
And this also is cool. I had a hint that it was coming, but Scholastic UK really outdid themselves. This is a website dedicated to The Ascendance Trilogy. You can go directly to it here (and you should!). If you're looking for the address, it's here: http://www.thefalseprince.co.uk/
There is a fantastic quiz that will help you determine whether you have the heart of a prince, or one of a pauper. You can listen to chapter one, read by the most fantastic Charlie McWade, download extra games, or explore the world of Carthya. I understand Scholastic UK will continue to update the site as well. Go ahead, give it a try!

PIXAR'S 20 RULES OF STORYTELLING

Since it was formed in 1979, the Pixar Company changed hands a couple of times, nearly failed more often than that, and on the verge of being sold by Steve Jobs when Disney agreed to distribute a children's film, Toy Story. That film went on to earn over $350 million worldwide. As of February 2012, Pixar films have earned twenty-six Academy Awards, seven Golden Globes, and three Grammies. They have made over $7 billion worldwide, with an average gross of $602 million. No other film company comes even close to that average.
So, can we agree that Pixar may know a few things about great storytelling?
A couple of weeks ago, Pixar storyboard artist, Emma Coats (@lawnrocket) began tweeting some of the "rules" she has gleaned from her years of working for the studio. The rules were turned into the poster I show above.
I've tried to pick a favorite, but they're all great for different reasons, and at different stages in the process. So I'll ask you, do you have a favorite, and why?
