Ruth Hull Chatlien has been a writer and editor of educational materials for twenty-five years. Her specialty is U.S. and world history. She is the author of Modern American Indian Leaders for middle-grade readers. Her award-winning first novel The Ambitious Madame Bonaparte (Amika Press) tells the story of the tumultuous life of Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson Bonaparte. Her second novel, Blood Moon: A Captive's Tale (Amika Press), retells Sarah Wakefield's ordeal as a captive during the Dakota War of 1862. Her most recent novel, Katie, Bar the Door (Amika Press), explores a young woman's emotional journey from loss and abuse toward healing.

Sunday Review: Last Call at Smokey Row by Pat Camalliere

Last Call at Smokey Row is a departure for Pat Camalliere, whose previous novels are part of a series of historical mysteries that take place in Lemont, IL. Although also set in Lemont, the latest novel is more what I’d classify as a contemporary woman’s novel set in the early 1980s.

The main character and narrator, Jane Archer, is someone many people can relate to. Raised in a Catholic family

LOVED this in high school. Fifty years later, it didn’t enthrall me but was enjoyable. If I could give half stars, it would be 3.5.

I really didn't know if I'd like this because I know the outcome of the "mystery." But the backward narrative for Anna Anderson's timeline was intriguing, and once I got to the end, I understood why the author did it. ...more

The writing is pedestrian, and the portrayal of Wolsey isn’t very complex. Gave up at the 40% mark.
