Triple announcement pew pew pew!!!

Killing Adonis will be available as an audiobook on July 12! I absolutely adore audiobooks, and it’s been a dream of mine to have one for a long time. I’m thrilled to have my novel brought to the audio world thanks to the good folks at Blackstone. You can (and should) preorder it now and shove it into your earholes.

Announcement the next one:
My new novel the Fabulist will be released via America’s largest independent publisher, Sourcebooks, in June 2023. It’s a book filled with yoga-loving bikie gangs, bodies turning up in bathtubs, extralegal veterinarians, philosophy, comedy, hallucinations, revelations, ghosts, guilt, and a dog named Dante.
Announcement the one after the middle one:
I will have ANOTHER novel out in 2023, Lenore’s Last Funeral, a comedy/mystery about a professional mourner and her encounters with a cult obsessed with cryonics and immortality. It’ll be out in October 2023 through American publisher Level Best Books. This is the first of a trilogy, so get ready for more Lenore in the near future!
It’s been a while since I’ve had a novel out, and I want to truly, sincerely thank everyone who’s taken the time to check out my work, recommend it to friends, and write reviews. You are the nitro to my glycerin.
Love etc.
JD

Big Issue Fiction edition is out now!

I’m very excited to announce that I have a short story, Ava, in the annual Big Issue fiction edition. I look forward to its release every year, it always showcases some of Australia’s best and brightest, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be included in this edition alongside some of my favourites like Mandy Beaumont and Alice Pung.
The last couple of years have been particularly hard for vendors, so please make sure to go and grab a copy both to treat yo’ self and to help out someone else. EVERYBODY WINS!

19 ½ Spells Disguised as Poems is out now!

After years of performing at schools and helping kids wrote poems, I figured it was about time I brought out a book of poems (spells) for kids. It is very important to note that this is DEFINITELY, positively not a book of spells, because magic isn’t real, obviously. This is a book of poems (spells) about very important things like zombies and rapping grandmas and cephalopods.
It’s out now via Odyssey Books, and as always if you buy it direct through my website here I can sign it and write an inscription (spell) or whatever you like.
Holly Eastwood has provided some excellent illustrations and I feel very fortunate to have worked with her.

I also made this extremely important educational video about dinosaurs that features a cameo from my book.

Southerly 80th anniversary issue
I am tremendously honoured to have a story published in the 80th anniversary issue of Southerly Journal. My strange, darkly comic story ‘Progeny’ appears alongside the work of marvellous writers like Tug Dumbly, Stuart Barnes, Grace Yee, and Mandy Sayer.
Congratulations to the Southerly team on successfully reaching octogenarian status!

Six Cold Feet Season 2

We’re very excited to be bringing you season 2 of Six Cold Feet at long last! I’ll be appearing at the ABC’s Ozpod conference in Melbourne on the 3rd of October, and we’re holding our launch party the following week at the Bearded Lady in Brisbane. The launch will feature the musicians who wrote the incredible songs for season 2 (which we’ll also be releasing as an EP), including a rare performance from reclusive rockstar and star of season 2, Juliet Knives. I’ll also do a short spoken word set and some general yelling at the crowd.
We’ll be recording the event and using the audio in future episodes, so meta! In the words of Juliet Knives: “Let’s get weird together.”

INTER at Flowstate
One of the things that brings me great joy is that some of my favourite artists are also some of my closest friends. And I’m incredibly pleased to announce that I’ve recently been part of a truly wonderful new work called INTER, made in collaboration with Liesel Zink (an amazing choreographer); Mike Willmett (an incredible musician, who I previously worked with in Poetry is Dead); and Erica Field (a phenomenal actor, and, although it’s not directly relevant, one of the groom’s party at my wedding in a few weeks’ time).
In addition to working with these wonderful humans, I’ve also been introduced to the luminary talents of the dancers Michael Smith, Amelia Stokes, and Lauren Carr, as well as Jason Glenwright’s superb lighting design.
Writing can be a very solitary activity, so I’m very grateful and excited to be part of such a multi-faceted team. I’ve always said that Art and Science should be lovers, we should see them sharing the stage more often. I believe that the artistic, eloquent expression of scientific discovery combines the two highest accomplishments of human civilisation. I read a stack of obscure and fascinating scientific research to compose the text for this show, and while I’m immensely proud of what I came up with, I’m far more excited by the work as a whole.
The show will run from August 21-26th at Flowstate, South Bank. Tickets are 100% Freebird.

Hello person who is reading this.
This post exists in order to announce 2 x exciting things!
Exciting thing the first:
I’ll be performing at one of the satellite events for the Commonwealth games on Thursday the 12th of April. Tales and Ales will feature some of my favourite humans, who also happen to be incredible performers and poets. This is a free event, so tell all your broke friends to show up.
Event info:
Come along to Tales and Ales to take in some of Queensland’s finest spoken word and hip hop.
Drop in to hear Scott Wings, Anisa Nandaula, Hope One (Hot Brown Honey), The Architects of Sound, Borrowed Verse, Josh Donellan and more. Don’t miss the live slam and resident DJ spinning tracks between acts.
Exciting thing the second:
I’ll be heading to our nation’s capital to headbutt Tony Abbott perform and present at the Canberra Flash Fiction Fun Weekend. There will be a bunch of fantastic authors like Jackie French and Irma Gold presenting speeches and workshops. I’m especially excited about performing at the Tales After Dark event on Friday night.
