Seconds away from telling the vet to put Mr. Meri down yesterday because he was all over that ear, howling and spraying blood everywhere, I took him to have a steroid shot instead. After a short discussion, the vet eluded that she felt it was a Mast tumor that releases Histamine. Really, really, really! I had been told that cats could take Benadryl and verified this with the vet. Meri reacted badly the last time I gave him Benadryl, foaming at the mouth, etc . . . that I decided not to give him anymore. BUT I didn't understand at the time the nature of his problem. GOOD GRIEF. I got him home after the steroid injection and he was quiet but sat there with BOTH eyes squinted and scratching with vigor at the OTHER ear. I ran to the kitchen cabinet, mixed the contents of an off-brand Benadryl in his cat food juice and dosed him up. That was at 9:00 las night. Below is a photo of him today at 2:30. Not even ONE attempt to scratch either ear. I called a compounding pharmacy to get Benadryl with chicken flavor added. They also can add Marshmellow flavoring which several vets claim that cats LOVE! I could've had him on this all along. ARGH!!!
