Fear God, 163

~ Levi Feared God ~
God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “ fear God .”
This Week’s Passage  ~  “‘Behold, I will rebuke your descendants and spread refuse on your faces, the refuse of your solemn feasts; and one will take you away with it.  Then you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, that My covenant with Levi may continue,’ says the Lord of hosts.  ‘My covenant was with him, one of life and peace, and I gave them to him that he might fear Me; so he feared Me and was reverent before My name.  The law of truth was in his mouth, and injustice was not found on his lipsHe walked with Me in peace and equity, and turned many away from iniquity” (Malachi 2:3-6).
Fearing God Results in Salvation  ~  “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).  “A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16).  This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will.
Fearing God Results in Fearlessness  ~  “The Lordis my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lordis the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).  The answer is: only God.  With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.
Fearing God Results in Witnessing  ~  “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).

EXTRA: The Unchanging God

~ The Immutability of God ~
“A remarkable implication of Einstein’s theory is that no matter how fast or in which direction we were to travel in an imaginary spaceship, light would always travel past us at the same speed.  Even if we traveled toward a light source at nine-tenths’ the speed of light, any light passing us in either directionwould be going by us at 186,000 miles per second relative to us. This is another indication of the absoluteness of the nature of light.”   ~ from the chapter “Immutability” in the eBook “ GOD’S NATURE: Sonlight Sunlight ” ( https://books2read.com/GodsNature ) by Robert Lloyd Russell.

Psalm 119, 15of27

~ Read God’s Word To Reduce Shame In Your Life ~
119:6 Then I would not be ashamed,When I look into all Your commandments.
119:22 Remove from me reproach and contempt,For I have kept Your testimonies. 119:23 Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes.
119:31 I cling to Your testimonies;O Lord, do not put me to shame!
119:116 Uphold me according to Your word, that I may live; And do not let me be ashamed of my hope.
Comment  ~  The world judges others by the external—by appearance and performance.  God judges the inner reality—the desires and heart of a person.
“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him.  For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart’” (1 Samuel 16:7).

The Law: Questions, 12of25

~ What Was The Penalty For Violating The Law? ~
Scripture  ~  “Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day.  And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation.  They put him under guard, because it had not been explained what should be done to him.  Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘The man must surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.’  So, as the Lord commanded Moses, all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, and he died” (Numbers 15:32-36).
Comments  ~  Today we live in a time of grace.  God is dealing with people in a much gentler way than He did under the Mosaic Law.  But it will not always be so.  Everyone will have to give an account of themselves at a future time.  “Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.  For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles — when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.  In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.  They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.  For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit” (1 Peter 4:1-6).
Reference  ~  You may be interested in a previous “Abundant Life Now” 14 post series entitled “10 Commandments Today” (from March 1 to June 28, 2018).  “Abundant Life Now” also posted a 12 post series entitled “Law vs. Grace” (from January 22 to December 24, 2013).  The Key Passage in this series is: “Do not think that I [Jesus Christ] came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.  I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).

Psalm 119, 14of27

~ Read God’s Word To Stand Strong Against Satan ~
119:61 The cords of the wicked have bound me,But I have not forgotten Your law.
119:95 The wicked wait for me to destroy me,But I will consider Your testimonies.
119:110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,Yet I have not strayed from Your precepts.
Comment  ~  The more you read and know the Bible the less influence Satan will have in your life.  Remember our Lord Jesus Christ when tempted three times by Satan responded each time by quoting God to Satan.

Question – Jesus, 32

~ Regarding Trade-Offs ~
Introduction ~  This series is about questions involving Jesus.  Some were asked by individuals involved with Jesus Christ while He walked on earth.  Others are questions that Jesus Christ asked others.  We will look at questions on about 130 topics (some may split into two or more posts).  Even so, it is far from an exhaustive list.
Scripture  ~  “When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, ‘Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.  For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it.  For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?  For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels’” (Mark 8:34-38).

God Is My… (Psalms), 5

~ God Is My Shield (2) ~
Introduction  ~  Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms.  While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage  ~  “But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; let those also who love Your name be joyful in You.  For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield” (Psalm 5:11-12).
Prior Passage  ~  “Lord, how they have increased who trouble me!  Many are they who rise up against me.  Many are they who say of me, ‘There is no help for him in God.’  Selah.  But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head.  I cried to the Lord with my voice, and He heard me from His holy hill” (Psalm 3:1-4).
Significance  ~  God is our protector!
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
“‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20).
Comment  ~  God has provided everything that His people need.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:10-28).

Myth, 37

~  You Will Retain A High Percent of Church Visitors ~
Reality  ~  It is quite common to find that many visitors on Easter, Christmas, or other special events are not seeking God.  Many come to please a family member.  Some come to earn points with God—thinking that God will add it to the good side of their ledger.  There are also other subtle reasons for church attendance at special events—a common one is to see a child relative “performing on stage.”  Some do come seeking God and are in the process of trying to answer some of life’s basic great questions.
Scripture Accounts  ~  Recall that Christ performed many special events such as the feeding of 5,000 men plus women and children.  He performed miracles throughout His ministry.  But also remember He left this earth entrusting His ministry to twelve men from ordinary occupations and a relatively small number of other believers.
The Bottom Line  ~  Keep holding special events—just don’t be unrealistic about the likely immediate benefit to your local church or organization.

Fear God, 162

~ God’s Obedient Children Fear God ~
God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “ fear God .”
This Week’s Passage  ~  “Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the Lord.  Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, spoke the Lord’s message to the people, saying, ‘I am with you, says the Lord.’  So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius” (Haggai 1:12-15).
