Thinking About Voice – The Climb #692
I’ve been thinking a lot about voice this week.
There was a time when I worried a lot about this as a writer. Just what is voice? What was my authorial voice? As time has progressed, I’m not sure I have a clear definition, but I understand a little more of how I write.
However, what concerns me here, isn’t those writing tics I have as an author, but the specific language I use when writing a story (be it novel or short).
As I’ve got older, the books I love are ones ...

Shadowlands Completed? – The Climb #691
It feels like things are starting to quieten down in Shadowlands. This week, my characters completed the campaign quest – nicely timed with taking down Denathrius on my raiding alt. Whilst it’s still a pain to get all the anima, I had saved the turn in from Denathrius so at least one of my characters had it all stocked up and didn’t need to grind.
And yes, there’s further renown to be done but it’ll be 2 a week rather than 3. Unfortunately the anima hunt persists b...

HEMA Hibernation – The Climb #690
The pandemic has been pretty devastating to HEMA. Obviously whilst there is some element of social distancing when you are trying to stay out of the range of someone’s blade, it’s just not practical to risk it with a big group of people together, and it provides a burden to clubs that are little more than solo ventures in most parts.
With sports centres closing, venues have been closed as well and whilst I know some – even in my own school – who have found spaces outs...

Digitial Notebooks And Why I Advocate Them – The Climb #689
I like to be a mobile writer, and by that I mean, I want to be able to write anywhere. Obviously some locations are better than others, but I don’t want to be in a position where I have chance to write and don’t have tools at my disposal to do so.
One of the major ways I do this is through the use of digital notebooks.
I was never a fan of physical notebooks. I know writers who swear by them and that’s all well and good but all my best ideas seemed to come to me when i...

Denathrius Down – The Climb #688
This has been a incredibly long week. I was lamenting that I felt like I wasn’t being productive this week, only to realise that I submitted the script on Wednesday and that was this week. I still had a bunch of other things that needed to get done but didn’t due to the real world just throwing me off. Oh well, it’s about progress and moving forward. It doesn’t have to be smooth.
I’ve also been progressing my World of Warcraft though this week, that too felt a bit r...

The Shop At The Bottom Of The Hill – The Climb #687
I rarely get ideas from dreams. Mostly my dreams are a mixup of continuously changing ideas, each scene changing one piece of continuity so that by the end, the dream is very different to how it started.
Even when there is something that feels concrete, it fades so quickly from memory that by the time I’ve woken up enough to write it down, it’s disappeared like dust in a hurricane.
Sometimes there’s a strong central idea, from which I can merge in a bunch of other idea...

Environmental Influence – The Climb#686
I wish I didn’t get impacted by the world around me. I guess you’re supposed to, as a writer. You’re supposed to absorb the world and spit it out in a way that all makes sense in the form of a story.
I’ve often said that my productivity has been a bit of a yoyo since the pandemic. At times I can be super-productive. I knuckle down, get into what I do and don’t look up until it’s done. Other days, words are treacle, ugly and uninspired.
Thankfully, everything in my li...

Warcraft Thursday – The Climb #685
Today has technically been my day off. I should have had my day playing Warcraft yesterday but due to needing to get my submission out, it meant I only got a few hours play – which isn’t enough for all the Warcraft weekly quests.
So I decided to have a Warcraft Thursday this week.
Now, in the back of my head I’ve starting to become VERY aware of just how much writing I need to do each day to meet my next deadline. Admittedly this one is a soft deadline – one just for ...

First Writing Project Of 2021 Completed – The Climb #684
I’ve managed to get my first writing project of 2021 completed and submitted but it came at a cost.
Wednesday is typically my Warcraft day. It the day of the weekly resets and I’ve found it’s easier to find groups on that day. It also means I get the bulk of the weekly tasks done and out the way rather than let them drag on and possibly disturb my other work for the week. I want to interlace pieces of writing with recharging in Warcraft but it needs to be the more b...

Full Steam Ahead – The Climb #683
I try to track my writing and editing. I have a database where I enter what I was writing, the word count and the start and end times to not only give me a log of the number of words written across any given period, but also my writing rate. Through it I’ve discovered that I write non-fiction at around 2200 words per hour, fiction around 1700, and that diminishes over time.
But I don’t know how to track script writing.
It’s proving a very different sort of writing. Wh...
