Disrupted Flow – The Climb #812
I had one of those days where I had to be somewhere early and it disrupted my flow. As a result I spent the rest of the day feeling thoroughly unproductive.
After a few weeks of big projects with soft deadlines, I’m back to working on a few things at once. The trick, as I’ve written, is to do a bit on them each day. Yes, it’s more difficult to see progress but it all adds up.
I’m reminded by The Climb. I stop posting for a while after the novel sale fell through at the l...

Smaller Scenes – The Climb #811
I’ve noticed that this book seems to want smaller scenes.
I’m in one of those lulls where work is out there and you’re waiting to hear back. At those times I try and keep myself busy so I’ve been using the time to really get some wordcount down on The Accursed.
The plan is for lots of little sessions. Write a bit, go do something quick on Warcraft, then come back. Obviously procrastination gets in the way, but often that’s my brain just not being ready to punch out a sc...

Pre-Writing – The Climb #780
I heard Brandon Sanderson call some exploratory writing you do before starting a novel, pre-writing. I like that term and even if it’s not exactly the same as what Sanderson does, I’m adopting it for my opening exploratory chapters I write as part of the outline.
And here’s the thing. I’m ALL over the place. I’ve pretty much been working on 3 chapters, one which got inserted in the middle after I’d written what is now chapter 3. That means chapter 3 needs to be changed...

Pokemon Go Snivy Community Day – The Climb #779
Today was a No Writing Day, but this was mostly by design. It was Snivy Community Day in Pokemon Go and these community day events always seem to swallow my day.
I’m not really doing a lot of Pokemon Go lately. I’m dipping in and out of it. I’m getting the event research and collections complete but that’s about it. I do miss being able to go to the big shopping mall on community days where we all used to meet up.
However, Covid has kinda put Pokemon Go in the backgrou...

A Glorious Mess – The Climb #778
After yesterday’s bad day of no writing, I got back on track today with a number of writing sessions. Still not as much as I can do in a day but I’m still exploring the cracks and corners of this story.
I’m enjoying being able to spend the time doing this. It seems like a long time since I did a first draft but in reality, it was just a few months ago. But because this is just focused on opening chapters, it allows me to stop and question the outline.
My tense is all ...

Unproductive – The Climb #777
Today wasn’t a productive day. They happen.
I got woken by a delivery. Normally deliveries round here are lunchtimes to late afternoon but for some reason I must have been the first delivery of the day. I woke to someone knocking at my door, and the sudden awakening coupled with trying to dress and get to the door before the delivery driver disappeared, left me with a headache that did not go all day.
As a result, I just wasn’t in the mood to do anything really. I put e...

Creatively Recharging – The Climb #776
I would have considered today not to have been a productive day. Sure I got an acceptable number of words done but I was supposed to be doing some joint content in World of Warcraft today and got on early, only for the other person not to show. As a result, I felt there was possibly a little too much Warcraft.
I know a lot of writers who gave up Warcraft because they found it was eating up too much of their time, but I find it the best way to creatively recharge between...

Warcraft Wednesday: A Million And One Projects… In Azeroth – The Climb #775
Today was a bit of a Warcraft Wednesday. Don’t worry, I still got words done on The Accursed.
With ten characters at level 60, I’m over half way done on my aim to get all my alts leveled. Even better, the rest are all in various states of progression from 55 down to 50.
I’ve started to make a point of running my leveled alts through the weekly boss. It’s easy if you do it on a Wednesday when it’s new. There’s a chance of 213 gear and my alts all get a renown for kill...

A Million And One Projects – The Climb #774
Today in the glamorous world of writing, I got to write a blowjob scene. This might sound like fun but trust me, knowing how to strike the tone just right in sex scenes is difficult. It’s hard work (pun intended). Worse still, I think I need to rewrite it to better set up the scene that follows it.
I got a lot more writing done today compared to previous days. I’ve been doing multiple sessions, swapping to other tasks in between. I got another Warcraft character up an...

A Working Bank Holiday – The Climb #773
Technically, this was supposed to have been a bank holiday. But I have a number of projects on the go and I find myself in one of those weird times where I seem to be productive without really trying. Perhaps it’s because I’m focused on the now rather than getting frustrated about the future. Or perhaps it’s because I’m not waiting on anyone.
The Accursed is continuing to be written. These are just introductory chapters, helping me find out if things like voice and them...
